When it comes to entertainment marketing, TikTok is the new “ground zero.”
That was among the views expressed by a panel of five top film and TV marketing executives held Wednesday as part of Variety’s Entertainment Marketing Summit at the One Hotel in West Hollywood.
The lively conversation, moderated by Claudia Eller, Variety’s chief production officer, touched on the challenge of working with shrinking marketing budgets, the need to create bespoke content for an array of platforms and the thrill of scoring big with earned media and word of mouth. But the discussion became the most animated when the group discussed the outsized role that TikTok now plays in spreading the word on entertainment content.
“It’s democratized the ability for anyone to have a voice. It has exploded the entire space wide open,” said Christian Parkes, chief marketing officer for Neon. “It’s a place where we...

Scott Cooper’s horror thriller “Antlers” is finally ready to trot.
The Searchlight Pictures release, delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, will bow as the closing night film of the annual Beyond Fest. After, it will continue rolling out at global genre festivals, including Fantastic Fest, the Telluride Horror Show and Sitges Film Festival.
The tour will conclude with a domestic theatrical release on Oct. 29.
“I made ‘Antlers’ as a communal theatrical experience for cinema lovers,” said director and co-writer Cooper. “I can’t think of a more apt series of screenings to launch our film before audiences across the globe — audiences whom I hope share an appreciation for horror films with a different perspective on our everyday fears and ancestral mythology.”
Cooper, whose credits include “Hostiles” and “Crazy Heart,” helms the pic, produced by Guillermo del Toro, David S. Goyer (“The Night House”) and J. Miles Dale of the upcoming “Nightmare Alley.

The idea of a U.S. film festival sticking to its dates in 2020 with a fully programmed, all-physical, non-virtual slate of screenings? It might seem beyond possibility, but then, the suspension of disbelief is particularly accentuated at L.A.’s annual Beyond Fest, which programs “genre” films every fall at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. With all indoor theaters in the county currently mothballed, the celebration of horror and fantasy moved to the most fantastical of SoCal places — Montclair — for a week of double-features at the Mission Tiki Drive-In, wrapping up with Thursday night’s riotously received world premiere of Blumhouse’s “Freaky.”
“If you had told us a year ago we were going to premiere at a drive-in, it might not have felt like an awesome thing,” said Adam Egypt Mortimer, the director of “Archenemy,” standing beneath the big screen and stars before the world bow of his film Wednesday night.

Elissa Federoff, Neon’s head of distribution, on the Us release strategy for Bong Joon ho’s awards contender.

Despite pumping out some of the most riveting cinema in the world, South Korea has long flailed at the domestic box office. Until now, with Neon’s release of Bong Joon-ho’s Cannes Film Festival Palme D’or winner Parasite, which soared past $11.278M this weekend, with many distribution sources projecting the pic’s stateside endgame at $20M.
Worldwide, Parasite has amassed $106.7M, 67% of that gross coming from South Korea, easily making the pic the helmer’s highest-grossing title of all-time. Joon-ho’s previous global best was 2006’s The Host ($89.4M), followed by 2013’s Snowpiercer ($87M), the latter of which was his best stateside with $4.6M.
Parasite‘s current running B.O. is literally on the verge of besting such foreign language pics as 2007 Best Foreign Language Oscar winner The Lives of Others ($11.286M), and will soon overtake the original Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ($12.7M...

Christian Parkes, Chief Marketing Officer at I, Tonya distributor Neon, has claimed that video games are the greatest threat to the future of the indie film industry.
“I am frankly terrified about what’s going on in the marketplace today,” Parkes said on a panel at the American Film Market’s finance conference today (November 8).
“The competition is anything that takes you away from spending $10-15 at the movie theatre. The gaming industry is the biggest threat. It’s increasingly harder to get young audiences out to the movies.
“From a generational standpoint, younger audiences would rather play video games than watch movies. When they do watch movies, they want to watch it on their device, in small slices. If they’re not captured immediately with something incredibly compelling, they dismiss it… The gaming industry is obliterating the film industry,” he added.

“Assassination Nation,” the Sundance hit from writer-director Sam Levinson, opens in theaters nationwide this Friday, September 21, but marketing the movie over the last several months hasn’t been the easiest road for co-distributor Neon. Christian Parkes, the company’s chief marketing officer, revealed in an interview with Variety that Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube all rejected a cut of the film’s trailer.
Neon told Variety the intended clip for the movie violated the social media platforms’ terms of use for two reasons: One scene featured a group of women pointing guns directly at the camera, while another scene featured a woman pulling up her shirt and flashing her bar to the camera. The latter scene featured no female nudity whatsoever. Parkes said Neon was informed that trailers could show characters in their underwear but not the physical act of undressing. “Assassination Nation,” a wicked riff on the Salem Witch Trials and our current social media culture, was always intended to be provocative. What Neon, the indie label that bought the film at Sundance, didn’t count on was that many of those same digital giants it skewers would find advertisements for “Assassination Nation” too hot to handle.
As the movie prepares for its debut on Friday, it is having trouble posting clips on Facebook and YouTube. And it’s not just new media. Billboards, one of the oldest forms of hawking products around, are also proving tough to come by.
To be fair, there’s good reason for the discomfort. Neon has definitely been leaning into the film’s more controversial elements. “Assassination Nation” follows four gun-toting high school girls who take up arms against an anonymous hacker who has leaked all of their hometown’s dirty secrets online. Their revenge is bloody.

It’s difficult to offer a detailed synopsis of “Running for Grace” without making it sound like something adapted from a young adult novel of recent vintage. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, you understand, but this pleasantly well-crafted period drama actually plays more like a throwback to youth-skewing entertainment of an earlier era. Imagine a Troy Donahue-Sandra Dee teen romance of the early ‘60s with an inoffensive undercurrent of social consciousness, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from director David L. Cunningham’s thoroughly predictable but lightly enjoyable tale of love and prejudice in 1920s Hawaii.

After Tom Quinn launched the indie distributor Neon before 2017’s Sundance Film Festival, it didn’t take long for the company to show its potential to become an important part of the landscape.
By the time Tiff rolled around, Neon was impressing the filmmakers of its first big play, I, Tonya, with a well-drawn presentation right after the movie’s festival premiere. They brought to their meeting the same Dove ice cream bars that Jeff Gillooly stocked in Tonya Harding’s refrigerator, his awkward attempt to make her feel valued.

“I first met Christian at a screening of Stand By Me we were hosting in Brownsville, Oregon in 2007,” said League. “We’ve been friends ever since and have worked together whenever possible.”

Exclusive: Oskar Thor Axelsson, who helmed the Nicolas Winding Refn-produced Black’s Game, has been set by Millennium Films to helm Point Of Violence, an action thriller scripted by Tony Mosher and Christian Parkes. The pic uses a sliding doors concept to tell the story of a hit man given the order to kill a woman who turns out to be a former lover. In one version, he carries out the hit, and in the other, he refuses and is forced to protect his old flame. The film will shoot early next year and Dobre Films is producing. The Icelandic helmer put himself on the map with Black’s Game, a fictional story set in Reykjavik in the 90s when the crime and drug trade flourished and the game became much more violent and dangerous. In that backdrop, the film tells the story of a game that took control of the underworld.
