Ahhh, the late ’80s/early ’90s… the heyday of shot-on-video horror. Where anyone could pick up a camera, make a movie and get it into video stores; well at least in the Us. This was also the era that made household names out of the likes of Donald Farmer, Tim Ritter, The Polonia Brothers and Nik Wendelsdorf.
Hold on, hold on. Nik Wendelsdorf? He didn’t make films in that era did he? Well, no. But his debut feature Mr. Cleaver sure feels like it comes from that period in horror history!

The women of Viscera have done it again. Not content with shining a light on the works of talented female horror filmmakers, Shannon Lark and Heidi Honeycutt (editor-in-chief of Planet Fury) have organized the Etheria Film Festival, a new juried fest dedicated to highlighting the best new short fantasy and sci-fi films made by women.
Taking place this Saturday (September 15) at The Somerville Theater in Somerville, Massachusetts, the Etheria Fest will be screening 15 short films in competition. Among those assisting Honeycutt and Lark in the judging process are filmmaker Rachel Talalay, director of the awesome cult fave Tank Girl ; Harvard Film Archive conservator Liz Coffey; and director/blogger/illustrator Stacie Ponder — yes, the Final Girl herself! Also being shown is We Are All Cylons, a documentary that looks at the rabid fandom inspired by Battlestar Galactica.
I asked Honeycutt why she felt the need to establish another film fest devoted to women filmmakers.

The man in charge here, Paul Bright seems to be a man of many hats, writer, producer, director, actor, editor, which is often the case with micro-budget features these days.
I have to give credit where credit is due, it is extremely hard to pull off all of those jobs and make a film that has a somewhat cohesive storyline and see it to the finished product. It’s difficult to perform just one of those jobs on a film, but to pull off several at one time is very impressive.
That being said, I wasn’t very impressed with the film Goliad Uprising. It left a bad taste in my mouth and had me scratching my head wondering what the filmmakers were trying to accomplish.

There’s a Red threat back in Hollywood.
It’s not a squad of recovering Stalinists like back in the McCarthy days. And it’s not to be found at the four-figure-admission Obama fundraisers.
The bona fide commies of Tinseltown are found among the independent horror scene.
Don’t get me wrong—you won’t find a single one of these collective workers wearing khaki coveralls or waving a pocket edition of Mao’s greatest hits. Quite the contrary. In a single glance around the Viscera Film Festival, last weekend at the Egyptian Theater, you can spot a funeral-black parasol, leopard-print bodice and ballroom gown.
But when it comes to making and promoting film, this is a crowd that rolls up their spike-cuffed sleeves and does what it takes. It’s not uncommon to find the director of one flick as the lead actress, film editor, or key grip on...

Women film-makers showcased at blood-splattered Los Angeles horror festival
A mummy sips a cocktail next to a pair of disembodied stockinged legs; a woman in a blue wig wanders through the crowds on stilts. It's just another cocktail mixer at the Viscera film festival in Los Angeles. Held at the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, (a few paces to the right from the crowd-attracting Marilyn Monroe star), the red carpet was white and covered in fake blood spatters, and the courtyard magician kept losing his balls. But then again, you'd need more than the normal quota of balls to stomach this delicious feast of oestrogen-generated suspense, gore and violence.
Viscera is run by actor, writer, director and producer Shannon Lark, its founder, with Heidi Honeycutt and Stacy Hammon. Yes, it's about empowerment, but it's also about entertainment.

“What is horror?” That was the question asked by Mary Lambert, the special guest speaker and Inspiration Award recipient of the annual Viscera Film Festival. Viscera is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the roles and rising opportunities for women in the film industry. Set on the belief that the only ones responsible for female success are themselves, the organization essentially helps women help each other by opening doors and promoting the creativity of competent female filmmakers. This year the ladies of Viscera, Stacy “Pippi” Hammon, Heidi Honeycutt and founder Shannon Lark, kicked off the festival with a sneak peak screening of Danielle Harris’ directorial debut Among Friends. The screening was followed by a red carpet ceremony, a collection of trailers for upcoming, female-driven films and a presentation of thirteen short films written, directed and produced by women. After the screenings, a Q&A was conducted with the festival award winners,...

Legendary horror actress and one of our personal favorites around here, Debbie Rochon, will be making an exciting leap to the other side of the camera when she makes her directorial debut with Model Hunger later this year.
Rochon's incredible list of films, her tenure as a host of Fangoria Radio, multiple horror columns, and constant festival appearances have made her incredibly popular amongst hardcore horror fans. Now she'll get a chance to show us what she's learned in two decades of acting when she takes the helm of Model Hunger.
The film is due to shoot this summer. For now you can dig the official Model Hunger Facebook page or visit DebbieRochon.com. This is one project we'll be keeping a sharp eye on. Knock 'em dead, D-Ro! Show them what you've got!

On this week's "Inside Horror" your host with the most, Elric, not only had his usual ladies (Staci and Jenna) flanking him, but he was also joined on the loveseat by the adorable Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede) and the super pretty (and talented!) SuperHeidi Honeycutt and Shannon Lark. Honest Abe got in a few licks as well.
Heidi and Shannon were on hand to talk about The Viscera Film Festival (which consists of all female filmmakers) as well as their big charity event, Bone Marrow, which will be taking place in the NoHo Arts District of Los Angeles, California, on the night of Saturday, February 25th (click here for more info).
First up, though, was Jenna Busch with "Dreadlines", hot off the Dread Central wire, along with some newly released teaser posters. Then Staci went behind-the-scenes of the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter film from Fox, directed by Timur Bekmambetov and starring Benjamin Walker.

Directed by: Mel House
Written by: Mel House
Cast: Katie Featherston, Glenn Morshower, Debbie Rochon
You know that you're in trouble when the protagonist of your film must be reminded in the very first scene to remember his medication. (Cue the close-up of prescription bottle changing hands.) If only I had been reminded to take my medication before watching Psychic Experiment, maybe I would have been in the proper state of mind to follow it. Describing the plot of this newest film from Texas indie filmmaker Mel Closet Space House is a bit daunting. There are so many characters and story threads wandering around the wildly ambitious, yet convoluted, screenplay that it would take multiple viewings to sort out all the bizarre goings-on. Even with the meds, my prescription simply isn't strong enough to watch this epic horror/sci/fi mash-up a second time.
This is what I can tell you for certain: Dr.

Exclusive Interview: Actress Adrienne King Talks Psychic Experiment, Her Return to Acting, and More!
Today, December 6th, Lionsgate unleashes writer/director Mel House's Psychic Experiment on DVD shelves everywhere (the film is also currently available on VOD platforms). It features an all-star cast including Katie Featherston, Debbie Rochon, Reggie Bannister, Glenn Morshower, Kathy Lamkin and Shannon Lark as well as the subject of this interview, Friday the 13th's original final girl herself- Adrienne King.
Psychic Experiment is centered around an idyllic, small, self-sufficient community which seems like the perfect neighborhood on the surface. After all, everything you could possibly need is within walking distance. But eventually the pastoral exterior conceals a dark past and an even darker secret, and as a group of individuals - each with their own ties and agendas with the town and each other - converge on the enclave, strange things begin to happen. Very strange things. Strange enough to test - and then break - the very fabric of reality itself.

Of all the people I've interviewed for Planet Fury's Halloween Memories series, Shannon Lark is a bit of an anomaly.
It's not that the actress/filmmaker doesn't care for Halloween. She does, very much. But as an artist, she's more interested in concept and atmosphere, or what goes on behind the scenes. And this carries over to all things, even All Hallow's Eve.
"I love Halloween," Shannon told me earlier this week, "but it's more about the month leading up to the event. On the actual day of Halloween, I would rather be working or staying at home with my family. I'm past the dress-up/participatory phase, and that's most likely a result of working in horror film and stage for so long."
She got comfortable and explained further, "I joke with my family that Halloween is bigger than Jesus. It's important to embrace the longer nights. It's comforting. The...

I just flew in from Fantastic Fest, and though I'd like to exclaim "boy, are my arms tired," to say that would be to ignore the exhaustion experienced by the rest of my body. You wouldn't think sitting in a theater watching movies for a couple of days could waste you like this, but here's a little secret: there's more to a film fest than watching movies.
This was nothing like other, smaller film festivals I've attended. Fantastic Fest started before the fest even began. Weeks before the first film ever hit the screen, emails from fest officials arrived to confirm my attendance and lay groundwork. I thought, "Oh, cool." Then, more emails from different people showed up. "It's heating up," I chuckled. Then even more emails hit and still more again. And then, revision emails arrived, altering mistakes made in previous emails. Suddenly, my once-empty email box was positively overflowing with advertisements,...

So, you normally don't hear about what women are directing in horror, sci-fi, and fantasy? That's because other assholes don't write about it. Only this asshole does. And there's a lot of new films projects you'll want to check out, if you're a real fannerd.
Aside from German-language release Lollipop Monster by Franziska Riemann and Larysa Kondracki's thriller in mainstream theaters, The Whistleblower, there's a bunch of shit to check out this summer.
Also in theaters is director/writer Miranda July's fantasy film The Future (see our review) opening on August 5th, 2011. This is July's second feature as director, the first being Me and You and Everyone We Know, which everyone who loves arty movies said was amazing. There's a talking cat and romance and a goregous beauty to The Future. Watch the stunning trailer:

Cory J. Udler is a horror fans director. This indie director makes the movies the fans want to see without giving in to "the suits"pressure. He has Incest Death Squad 1 and 2 that are already out and available and now he's working on his next film Mediatrix that we dive right into and talk about. Check out my latest Versus with director Cory Udler.
Brian S- First off, tell me about Mediatrix.
Cory Udler- Nobody's going to believe me, but it's based on a true story. Our story is about Mary Ann Van Hook, born into a world of false spiritualism, opiated by her mother. She basically parlays her manipulation skills into power over people, inevitably over someone who has done her wrong in the past. But she not only ruins things for that person along the way, she leaves a trail of broken bodies and bruised souls as well.

Stone created, and stars in, this psychological thriller about a pregnant womant faced with poverty, crime, violence, and eventual madness.
Stone plays "Havi", the pregnant woman, and director Abel Berry (Kodie) also co-stars as "Caleb", her criminal boyfriend. Andrew Rose acts as producer, and you'll recognize Shannon Lark (Walking Distance) and Dai Green (Resurrection) right away.
This story doesn't seem simple; when you watch the trailer you'll see that this is a dystopian creation, set in a bleak worls where poverty and crime are everywhere. Havi is unable to seek out a better life for herself and her family, because there is no better life to be had. Filled with a denizen of unsafe, neurotic, cruel, and criminal characters, this story is not a happy one. Prepare to feel bummed out, but intrigued:
Actress/Creator Jennifer Stone
Shannon Lark
Dai Green
Billy Blair

We're co-running the Viscera Film Festival, showing the best new short horror films directed by women, just like we did last year. Here's our 2011 lineup.
It's been pretty cut-throat. Out of over 80 submissions, we struggled and wept and co-director Shannon Lark and I beat each other up over what our final lineup would be. In the end, we decided, only the best of the best could play, so we counted and recounted our judges tallies and agreed that again we'd show way too many films and have our fest run way too long.
These films are just too good to not screen. We couldn't eliminate any of them. I have to be honest: I love every film on this list. We're got some Us premieres that we're especially excited about! The 2011 Viscera Film Festival Films are:
The Party’S Over by Gigi Romero
Bon Apetit by Kate Shenton
Doll Parts...

What began as a feature-length documentary two years ago has now evolved into a webseries about women and horror films directed by Montreal filmmaker Maude Michaud, debuting April 3rd, 2011.
When we first reported on the making of Bloody Breasts, interviews were still being conducted. Now, Michaud has changed the way we'll experience her exploration of the intersection of gender and horror films.
The first episode is titled “Women love horror?” and features interviews with directors and festival owners such as , Devi Snively, Reyna Young, Shannon Lark, Katt Shea, Kier-La Janisse, Denise Gossett, Heidi Martinuzzi and Elisabeth Fies.
A new webisode will be released each month on the official website for free starting tomorrow. We can't wait! Bloody Breasts is bound to be a scholarly, well-made take on a fascinating subject.

Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, is showing some brand new thrillers directed by women that you will Not have seen playing anywhere else.
High on my list of stuff to see at Female Eye is Stacie Ponder's Ludlow, which stars Viscera founder Shannon Lark, and which I watched being edited. It's screening on March 18th and is guaranteed to scare the shit out of you.
Check out the other movies, some of which are making their world premieres. I'm suprised that they shied away from using the word "horror" to describe some of these movies; drama and thriller and suspense seem to be far less offensive terms to the mainstream movie-going public. Thank God we're not the mainstream movie-going public, eh?
Schedule you need to know!!!!:
Friday March 18th
9:00Pm – 10:30Pm
Location: Rainbow Cinemas Market Square, 80 Front Street East, Toronto,...

It’s lucky 13 for the Boston Underground Film Festival as they celebrate their raucous 13th annual edition this year. Opening with the much buzzed about bloody feature film Hobo With a Shotgun starring Rutger Hauer and directed by Jason Eisener, the fest then barrels on for eight wild nights and days from March 24-31.
While there’s plenty of underground goodness from the U.S.A., this year Buff feels like it’s a much more international affair with several sick features from around the globe. There’s gory horror and quirky black comedy from Japan in the guise of Yoshihiro Nishimura’s Helldriver and Sion Sono’s Cold Fish; the Argentinian freak-out Phase7 by Nicolas Goldbart; David Blyth’s Wound is a psychological thriller from New Zealand; and Mark Hartley’s Machete Maidens Unleashed! is a look at Philippine exploitation cinema from the ’70s.
Stateside there’s Usama Alshaibi‘s Profane,...

We are wide ass open in indie horror month and we've also been following Joe Hollow and Wolfgang Meyer's production experience with their next offering, Cut. Watch the new trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
Plot:
Three friends stranded overnight in the mountains stumble upon a twisted family while 2 cops fight to solve local murders within a corrupt small town setting the stage as terrifying secrets unfold. Its a fight for survival as they spiral through a bloodbath of twists, turns and...
