Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s Ambi Pictures will finance and produce a remake of Christopher Nolan’s iconic, twist-laden film Memento.
Writer/director Christopher Nolan adapted Memento from a short story by his brother Jonathan Nolan titled “Memento Mori”, and the unusual, neo-noir psychological thriller took audiences by storm upon release in 2000 and has since achieved cult hit status with a fervent following.
Starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano, Memento was lauded for its nonlinear narrative structure and motifs of memory, perception, grief, and self-deception. The film was a box office success and received numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
Nolan’s original Memento follows Leonard (played by Guy Pearce) who is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife’s killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare,...

So as promised I watched the first episode of From Dusk Till Dawn the series and….pretty damn good actually. It starts off with a scene that will come to mean more as the series wears on and which calls back to the second straight to DVD From Dusk Till Dawn sequel Hangman’s Daughter which dealt with the origins of Salma Hayek’s Santanico Pandemonium head vampire character. After this we are back in sort of familiar territory with Don Johnson playing a suitably grizzled and weary Texas Ranger Earl McGraw on the look out for the Gecko Brothers who are on the lam and headed for Mexico.
Basically when it comes down to it, From Dusk Till Dawn is like a faithful adaptation of the original novel that the first film was based on if that were the case and it wasn’t an early Tarantino script. So...

With the 2014 Sundance Film Festival kicking off tonight, the quality of this year's lineup will gradually emerge in our daily coverage. However, for buyers at the festival, the question is less about the quality of various movies and more about their marketability. While the festival runs ten days, only a handful of movies in the main lineup have generated serious interest for distributors at this early stage. Here's a look at ten contenders. Read More: Sundance 2013 at the Box Office: The Biggest Grossers of Last Year's Festival "Cold In July" Why It Should Sell Big: Director Jim Mickle's cannibal shocker "We Are What We Are" was the toast of Sundance's midnight section last year before it went on to play at Cannes. Shifting genres slightly, Mickle's pulpy noir about the father of a burglar taking revenge on the man who killed him co-stars Michael C. Hall and Sam Shepherd,...

12 Years a Slave
When Steve McQueen's unflinching, unforgettable deep south slavery epic premiered at Telluride and Toronto in September, pundits identified it immediately as the likely big victor at March's Oscars. “August: Osage County” has all the trappings of an Oscar powerhouse, but it will leave the Toronto Film Festival with a few dents in its armor. The adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize winning play features a cast of past Academy Award winners and nominees like Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepherd and Juliette Lewis. It’s also being distributed by the Weinstein Company, which knows a thing or two about Oscar campaigning. But the film’s world premiere this week at Toronto drew mixed reviews. Most critics were kind to the individual performers, but accused the picture of being overly.

Yep, it’s true. The guy that has played everything from a laid-back party animal to a stripper might be revealing a dark side as Matthew McConaughey portrays the mysterious Mud.
In Mud, McConaughey plays a mysterious drifter living on an island in the Mississippi River who turns out to be a fugitive from the law. While living the life of a recluse, he befriends two boys who agree to help him restore a boat. Along the way, the kids (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland) the kids have to decide if keeping Mud a secret is the safest thing for them to do.
While the intensity in the trailer never really gets above a slow boil, the fact that McConaughey portrays the fugitive adds an element of tension that can’t be ignored. Is he a misunderstood individual, a guy that did the wrong thing for the right reason, or...

Call Girl
***½~ (3.5/5)
Call Girl is based on the true story of a scandal in the late 1970s involving powerful government figures and a prostitution ring that nearly brought down the Swedish government. The narrative is from the point of view of two delinquent underage girls who are lured into the ring by a manipulative madam and her henchman.
The film’s ’70s period detail is absolutely flawless; Europeans seem to do a better job at authenticity and verisimilitude when recreating the recent past than Americans do. It often feels that art directors and dressers working on U.S. period productions are too young to have lived through the era they’re recreating,...

After congratulating University of Southern California School of Theater graduates, Gary Ross, director of the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games, warned them they're going to spend years just trying to be a "thug."
"Now I don’t want to sugar coat what the future looks like," Ross said. "You will spend years auditioning for car commercials, or Thug Number Two, or if you’re lucky Thug with Gun."
Ross was selected to speak at the May 11 commencement ceremony for the USC School of Theater. Ross, a four-time Oscar nominee, was given USC’s Scripter Award in 2004 for his work on Seabiscuit.
Ross also gave grads the answer to why they chose a career in show business.
"You know the answer before I even say it," Ross said. "It’s not to be successful or famous or rich even though that may happen. It’s not to end up a star.

There are certain genres that, whilst once being the staples of cinema, seem to have fallen off the radar in recent decades. Top of that list is surely the western. In many ways it is the archetypal American genre, harking back to the ideas of the frontier and westering that are ingrained in American national identity. The western showcased new technologies like Technicolour and Widescreen, the vastness of the American landscape tailor made for the medium. But it didn’t stand the test of time, factors such as the popularity of the road movie, in many ways a modernisation of the Western, conspiring to consign it to the Hollywood graveyard.
In recent years however there’s been something of resurgence. As well as the remakes of 3:10 to Yuma and True Grit, we had The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, as well...

In case yesterday's piece about "The Iceman" didn't clue you in, we're big fans of Michael Shannon around here. Last year, the actor shined in Jeff Nichols' psychological drama "Take Shelter," but before they made that film, the duo teamed on Nichols' directorial debut "Shotgun Stories," a beautiful Southern-gothic family drama produced by David Gordon Green.
With "Shotgun Stories," Nichols presumably saved some coin by recruiting his brother Ben Nichols, frontman of Souther-rockers Lucero, to score the film. And while "Take Shelter" saw Dgg regular David Wingo ("George Washington," "All The Real Girls") take over scoring duties, it looks like the siblings are set to reunite once more for Nichols' latest film "Mud," starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Shannon in a small role.

Described as a 'Big Chill'-esque tale, 'Darling' features a fairly strong cast with Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Richard Jenkins, Dianne Wiest and Sam Shepherd and has been described as the comic, harrowing and deeply emotional story of a woman who enlists the help of numerous guests and a mysterious woman to find her beloved dog -- all while her relationship with her self-involved husband deteriorates. Once plotted as a potential...

Some films cannot be contained by a script. And some filmmakers cannot just trust in their material. They must believe in the themes of their story and in the facets of filmmaking that enrich a viewing experience. Simply put, a filmmaker must know when to indulge. Snow Falling on Cedars is a film that indulges–in its visual splendor, the potency of its dramatic arc, and even in the talent associated with it.
In the sleepy coastal town of San Piedro, a fisherman has been found dead. It is 1950, only nine years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and in a community with a heavy Japanese population, tensions have never ceased. Kazuo Miyamoto is charged with the murder of the fisherman. Reporter Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), a local man whose compassionate father...

Just Kids, Patti Smith's beautiful book about her youth with Robert Mapplethorpe, who she calls "the artist of my life" is a celebration, an elegy, a memoir, and a fascinating slice of life of New York City from the late sixties and seventies. It's also a study of two very different artists, with very different sensibilities.
Patti was very bohemian. She came from a poor background, with a loving family. She never finished college, but was well-read, especially in Symbolist poetry and her hero, Arthur Rimbaud. Patti spent most of her twenties trying to find herself. She wasn't focused on being a star, but an artist. Generous of spirit, she wanted at first be a muse, then an artist in her own right. Seemingly having little or no ego, she wanted everyone she met to succeed. She must have had a healthy ego to become a rock star, but...

Brad Pitt may be creeping up on 50 years of age, but the guy can still pull off a badass performance whenever he needs to. Be it Tyler Durden in Fight Club or Lt. Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds, the guy has spent a large part of his career being awesome and Cogan's Trade should be able to continue that trend. Screen Daily (via The Playlist) has posted the first look at Brad Pitt in the new Andrew Dominik film, and needless to say he passes for a mob enforcer. In the film, Pitt plays Jackie Cogan, a man hired to find out who is responsible for a heist executed during a mafia run poker game. The film - which just wrapped production down in New Orleans - also stars Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Vincent Curatola, Bella Heathcote, and Sam Shepherd. Garret Dillahunt is set to cameo in Cogan's Trade and has joined the cast of Rian Johnson's Looper. In an interview with The Av Club, Dillahunt revealed some details about the roles in this high profile films. He currenlty stars on TV's Raising Hope and has had supporting roles in No Country for Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James, The Road and Winter’s Bone.
His role in Cogan's Trade is just going to be cameo, but it still will be cool to see in this film. Dillahunt stated that he enjoyed working with Dominik and Pitt on Jesse James, and he's looking forward to starring in Cogan's Trade.
“Today, I’m driving from Thibodaux to New Orleans to do a little cameo in Cogan’s Trade with Brad andAndrew again, just because I’m close by. So I’m looking forward to seeing them.”

Garret Dillahunt is one of the better character actors around today, and even if the name doesn’t pop out at you, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen his work in the past. Roles in projects like No Country for Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James, The Road and Winter’s Bone all make impressions on the viewer, and he’s one of those guys that you wish had a bigger career.
And while this isn’t likely to change things up too much for him in terms of fame, we’ve heard that he’ll be appearing in two high-profile movies coming out relatively soon. In an interview with The Av Club (via ThePlaylist), the actor gave some brief details on these exciting projects.

Screen Daily has posted what appears to be the first official image of Brad Pitt in Cogan’s Trade, the heist caper from Andrew Dominik based on George V. Higgins’ novel of the same name that has now wrapped. In the movie Pitt plays Jackie Cogan, “a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game” believed to have been perpetrated by two junkies played by Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn.
Full image after the jump…
Described as a more serious ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and featuring a more sinisterly dark and humorous tone than The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, Dominik’s movie co-stars Ray Liotta (the hustler Mark “Markie” Trattman in charge of the game), Richard Jenkins (a lawyer in the know), James Gandolfini (a washed up hitman), Vincent Curatola (as an ex-convict seeking revenge) with additional roles for Sam Shepherd and Bella Heathcote.

With shooting wrapping up last week in New Orleans for the next film from The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director Andrew Dominik, we now have the very first still. Cogan’s Trade features an astounding ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, James Gandolfini, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo , Sam Rockwell, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, and Sam Shepherd.
The first still from Screen Daily (via The Playlist) features Pitt as Jackie Cogan, “a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game held under the protection of the mob.” The Assassination of Jess James was one of my favorite films of the past decade, and with this and The Tree of Life, it’s great to see Pitt take on these modestly-budgeted, arthouse-geared flicks in between the blockbusters. Check it out below.

With the Space Shuttle program readying to hang up its hat, the time is right to start feeling nostalgic for the great American space program.
Our scientists and astronauts will continue to work, but for a good decade or so we'll be hitching a ride on dirty, rotten, commie Soyuz rockets. It's a good thing Sam Shepherd isn't alive to see all this. (There's about four different facts wrong in that last sentence, but let's move on.)
Putting all that aside, let's celebrate the movie IMAX: Hubble 3D - a film I absolutely loved and is now available on DVD, download and, if you can get your butt to Best Buy for an exclusive, on Blu-ray.
In this clip you can see Mike Massimino (better known as @Astro_Mike on Twitter) showing off one of the shuttle's simulators.

New York -- Oliver Stone and writer Bruce Wagner have struck a development deal with Epix, with their first project being a one-hour scripted dramatic series called "Still Holding," based on Wagner's novel of the same name.
The series for the premium TV service, which is run by Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM, will explore "the colliding worlds of three disparate people in Los Angeles, and the violent consequences of love and betrayal, of holding on and letting go," Epix said. Stone and Wagner will executive produce. They previously worked together on six-hour sci-fi drama mini-series "Wild Palms," which first aired on ABC in 1993.
"I'm interested in the possibilities in television," Stone said. "When a company like Epix comes along, it's a chance to break new ground. They want to make their mark. They want to entertain and provoke; they don't want their drama or comedy watered down."

It's getting mighty crowded in the premium "video on demand" space. It feels like everyone and his brother wants to offer you movies to watch whenever you want -- but there's always a catch. Epix is an online service created as a joint venture by Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM. Epix features recent titles from the three studios in high definition before they're released on DVD or Blu-ray, but only if you subscribe to a cable service that offers it. As I wrote last June, Epix needed to convince cable TV operators to bundle the service into an already-existing package and thus avoid a separate, additional monthly fee for the consumer.

Jim Sheridan’s new effort Brothers may never fully overcome an odd pedigree—it’s a Hollywood melodrama based upon a challenging and dour Danish film—but it provides enough dramatic substance and top-shelf acting to justify its existence as a remake. Following the lives of two brothers, Sam and Tommy Cahill, the film documents what happens when an emotionally damaged war vet (Sam) is re-introduced to a life and family that have learned to cope without him.
At the center of Brothers, sits an uneasy triangle: Tommy, the ex-con brother, has bonded with Sam’s distraught wife Gracie and his two daughters after they received news of Sam’s disappearance in Afghanistan. When Sam comes home, he returns a different, fractured person and violent tendencies rise to the surface when he finds his brother encroaching upon all that he loves.
Everything about Brothers screams emotional manipulation and its presence...
