Next month’s Atx Festival, unsurprisingly, has made some programming changes amid the Writers Guild of America strike — including the cancellation of the 25th anniversary Dawson’s Creek reunion.
“There wouldn’t be television without writers. They have always been the rock stars of our festival,” Atx TV co-presidents and founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson said in a statement, “and though this year will look a little different, it will continue to be a place to showcase their talents and importance. The stories and characters we care so deeply about would not exist without them, and neither would this festival.

The 2023 Atx TV Festival is hosting an unprecedented Writers Strike Conversation in support of the ongoing WGA strike.
The strike, which formally began May 2, has led to the shut down of multiple productions in solidarity with the demonstrations. The Atx TV Festival has pivoted accordingly to announce the scrapping of certain programming with writers and showrunners unable to attend under strike guidelines. However, the festival has added a WGA on Strike! program with select WGA East and West members to address the ongoing concerns.
The Atx TV Festival announced an added conversation with some of TV’s leading writers discussing the current WGA Writers Strike. The panelists will discuss first-hand the issues at stake, the changes they’re fighting for, and why the strike is necessary to safeguard the future of not just writers, but all entertainment unions and creatives, per an official press release.

As film, TV, and music festivals look to adapt to government-mandated social distancing directives, one major 2020 event is ready to roll the dice on a remote festival experience. The Atx Television Festival, Austin’s premiere television event, announced Monday morning the ninth season will pivot to a virtual TV celebration. Instead of canceling the festival, the 2020 edition has been renamed “Atx TV… from the Couch!” and will take place via remote panels and online programming.
Season 9 will still run, as originally scheduled, from June 4-7.

As expected, the Atx Television Festival is no longer moving forward as planned.
Co-founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson have opted to cancel the in-person festival, scheduled for June 5-7, in favor of what they're calling "Atx TV … From the Couch," a virtual gathering designed to celebrate the medium.
Major reunions that were planned to take place this summer — Scrubs, Cougar Town, Parenthood, Oz and the writers from Justified — are all being rescheduled for the festival's 10th season, which is now set for June 10-13, 2021.

Heads up, TV creators: If you’re sitting on the next big idea, Atx Festival is ready to hear it. The Austin-based TV festival’s annual Pitch Competition is currently accepting submissions, and 10 finalists will be able to pitch their show directly to studio executives before mid-year. Submit your idea here.
“The Pitch Competition represents a collaboration with Atx, The Black List and Sundance Episodic Program that celebrates the power of story and opportunity,” Atx Festival co-founder Caitlin McFarland said in a statement. “Ultimately, [co-founder Emily Gipson] and I started this competition within the festival based on the idea that access to decision-makers and building a community of mentors and fellow writers is imperative to creating television. More than any other medium, it is a community of collaboration and we wanted to build something that lasted beyond a single award or cash prize. As we go into our eighth year of the competition,...

Disney+ has released the first trailer for its upcoming Gina Rodriguez-produced drama “Diary of a Future President,” which features a more terrifying ordeal than being in charge of an entire country: surviving middle school.
The series features Rodriguez as the current Potus, but stars Tess Romero as the 12-year version of Rodriguez’s Elena. The series follows the younger Elena (Romero), an unabashed, ultra-observant 12-year-old with a strong point of view, who walks through the world with purpose and confidence. The series also stars Charlie Bushnel, Selenis Leyva and Michael Weaver.

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez was all apologies Tuesday afternoon after an Instagram post showing her singing a lyric with the N-word sparked a social media backlash.
The offending post, which has since been deleted, showed Rodriguez in a make-up chair and passing the time by vamping and singing along to the Fugees track Ready or Not from 1996.
The 35-year-old star addressed the hubbub with another Instagram post: “Hey, what’s up everybody. I just wanted to reach out and apologize. I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to The Fugees, to a song I love, that I grew up on. I love Lauryn Hill, and I really am sorry if I offended you.”
That’s “sorry” times three plus an extra “apologize” all in a single post but the multiple mea culpas didn’t sway critics of the actress who framed the...

The CW will close the book on “Jane the Virgin” this spring. But fans may get to dive into another chapter of Jane Villanueva’s world — or at least the one in her mind — if the spinoff pilot, “Jane the Novela,” gets picked up to series.

In addition to Garza, Rodriguez will also serve as an executive producer on the project with “Jane” creator Jennie Snyder Urman and Joanna Klein of Sutton Street Productions; Emily Gipson of Rodriguez’s I Can and I will banner; Ben Silverman of Proagate Content; Jorge Granier; and Gary Pearl. Brad Silberling will direct and executive produce the CBS Television Studios pilot.

Warner Bros. is looking to breathe some new life into its long-in-development “Bobbie Sue” pic, as it has set Gina Rodriguez to star in the title role with Charles Stone III directing.
While the studio viewed the project as a priority since acquiring it in 2008, it was looking for the right actress for the lead, at one point eyeing Cameron Diaz to star before scheduling got in the way. Sources say the studio has already started meeting with other talent to star with Rodriguez with hopes to start filming later this year.
The story follows Sue, who after being raised among five rowdy brothers in blue-collar South Boston, is a scrappy, headstrong young lawyer who lands a career-making case with an upper crust law firm, only to realize she’s been hired for optics and not her expertise. But after discovering her powerful client, a lifelong idol and fellow Southie native,...

Jane the Virgin creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman has teamed with veteran development executive Joanna Klein to launch Sutton St. Productions. The company will be based at CBS Television Studios under Urman’s overall deal there. Sutton St. already has set several high profile series set for development. That include Riches To Rags, a multi-camera comedy at CBS headlined and executive produced by Jane standout Jaime Camil, and You’re Killing Me, a comedy at CBS All Access executive produced by Jane star Gina Rodriguez who could potentially act in it. The two projects join the recently announced Jane the Virgin spinoff in the works at the CW and medical drama Family Emergency at CBS.

While the spinoff would not center around any existing Jane the Virgin characters, it would be helmed by writer Valentina Garza.
The Jane the Virgin spinoff is officially ago at The CW. The network announced that the newly-titled Jane the Novela is among four pilots it is picking up for the 2019-2020 TV season.
Vulture previously reported that the network was considering a Jane the Virgin spin-off, to carry on the spirit of Jane the Virgin after the show makes its final bow this television season. Now the details have emerged and they're pretty great.
Jane the Novela will be a telenovela-inspired anthology series. Each season of the show will be a different telenovela written by Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and narrated by the author herself. The first season of the show will take place at Napa Valley vineyard. That, my friends, is how you spinoff.

The CW is not done with “Jane the Virgin” just yet.
The network has put in development a spinoff of the soapy drama, which is about to enter its final season, with original series creator Jennie Snyder Urman and star Gina Rodriguez attached.
Valentia Garza, who served as a writer and consulting producer, will write and executive produce the project with Urman and Rodriguez. Ben Silverman and Brad Silberling are set to executive produce the spinoff, with Silberling also attached to direct the project, which comes from CBS TV Studios, Sutton Street Prods., I Can and I Will Productions, and Propagate. Joanna Klein, Emily Gipson are also executive producers.

“Jane the Virgin” could be sticking around the CW — sort of.
Variety has learned that the network is developing a spinoff of the critically acclaimed series with original series writer and co-executive producer Valentina Garza onboard to write and executive produce the new project. Garza has been with the original series since its third season and has also written for shows like “The Simpsons,” “Bordertown,” “George Lopez,” and “Los Beltrán.”
In addition, “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman, series star Gina Rodriguez, and series executive producers Ben Silverman and Brad Silberling are set to executive produce the spinoff, with Silberling also attached to direct. Joanna Klein and Emily Gipson will also executive produce. CBS Television Studios will produce along with Sutton Street Productions, Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions, and Silverman’s Propagate Content. Snyder Urman and Rodriguez are both under overall deals at CBS TV Studios.

As Jane the Virgin is heading into its fifth and final season, the CW and the creative auspices behind the dramedy are reteaming for a potential spinoff. The network has put in development the untitled project, from the original series’ creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, executive producer Ben Silverman, executive producer/director Brad Silberling. and studio CBS TV Studios.
Details of the spinoff, written by Jane scribe Valentina Garza and directed by Brad Silberling, are not being revealed but I hear that the spinoff is envisioned as a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself.
The first installment, referred to as Tar & Roses, takes place at the intersection of Napa Valley wine country and the San Francisco art scene.
