An American Werewolf in London video puts Elmer Bernstein’s rejected music over transformation scene
Writer/director John Landis always intended to use Sam Cooke’s version of the song “Blue Moon” over the famous transformation scene in his 1981 classic An American Werewolf in London (watch it Here), and he let the film’s composer Elmer Bernstein know that up front. He chose “Blue Moon” because he wanted the scene to come off as being sad and painful rather than scary – but while putting together the score for the film, Bernstein decided to go ahead and compose some of his own music for the transformation scene. Just in case. Landis ended up rejecting Bernstein’s transformation music and stuck with “Blue Moon”… but now filmmaker Paul Davis, who generously shared 35 minutes of rare outtake footage from The Exorcist on Halloween this year, has put Bernstein’s rejected music over the transformation scene and uploaded it to YouTube. You can check it out in the embed...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Terror Films. This critic has worked on publicity, for this film, in the past. Directors/writers: Danny Draven, Paul Davis, Ómar Örn Hauksson, Dean Hewison, Joel Morgan, Johannes Persson, Nicholas Peterson, Erlingur Thoroddsen, Rasmus Wassberg, Sam Dickson, Richard Falkner, Paul Fischer, Jacey Heldrich, Barry Jay, Brian McAuley, David Steenhoek, Aidee Walker. Patient Seven is a horror anthology, from at fifteen writers and directors. Short films, from around the world, make up this recent outing. Comprised of seven short films and one wraparound, there is a little something here for every horror fan. This film fan enjoyed Ómar Örn Hauksson's take on 28 Days Later (2002), with "Undying Love." These two films are very comparable in costume and shooting style. As well, "The Body," which practically begins the anthology, is especially well written, by Paul Fischer and Paul Davis. The comedic twist is a welcomed surprise.

[Nb: With the film now – finally – available to buy in the UK (The Forgotten is out today from Metrodome), here’s a repost of my review of the film from the 2014 London Frightfest]
There has been, over the past few years, a growing trend in British horror for setting movies in abandoned housing estates and tower blocks. Joining the growing ranks is The Forgotten, which sees a father and son forced to squat in an empty London council estate scheduled for demolition, seemingly abandoned by the mother. A dark, creepy and foreboding place, the flat is no place for a family; even less so after 14 year old Tommy starts to hear strange noises coming from the boarded-up flat next door…

Shares of kiosk giant Outerwall are down more than 11.6% in pre-market trading after the company disclosed without explanation that J. Scott Di Valerio has resigned. Board member Nora Denzel will serve as interim CEO while the board searches for a long-term replacement.
Company chair Nelson Chan hints that Di Valerio was forced out, saying that the board “believes that now is the right time for a leadership change” because it would “accelerate the progress we are making.” He adds that the owner of the Redbox DVD rental kiosks “is well-positioned due to its strong operating and financial foundation.”
There’s no statement from Di Valerio. Outerwall says in an SEC filing that he stepped down on January 18 and resigned from the board yesterday. He took charge two years ago under equally surprising circumstances when Paul Davis — who had held the top job since 2009 — unexpectedly announced his retirement.

Well it’s that time of year again – the one where websites across the globe churn out Top 10 list after top ten list. So why should we be any different?! Yet whilst we may be following the predictable end of year lists, I can guarantee that my list is anything but predictable, featuring films from across the globe: including the Us, Canada, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and even good old Blighty!
This year more than ever there has been film after film that knocked it out of the park for me – which is why my Top 10 list has Two sections: the Top 10 and then the pick of 35(!) more brilliant movies (I would have loved this list to be a Top 45, honestly). So what’s my criteria? Well it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut,...

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Feature film nominations will be announced closer to the show date. Marshall, whose adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" bows Dec. 25, will receive the New York Apple Award, "recognizing individuals who have made special contributions to the New York entertainment...

The history of a haunted house, from the 19th century to today, will be explored in spooky fashion in the British anthology film Its Walls Were Blood. Steve Oram (Sightseers), Edward Hogg (Anonymous), and Polly McIntosh (White Settlers) have all joined the cast, per Screen Daily. Oram (pictured) was exquisitely good in Sightseers, and McIntosh brings beauty, grace, and feral intensity to her roles, so, yes, this is good news for the anthology flick. Individual segments will be directed by Sean Hogan (The Devil's Business), Paul Hyett (The Seasoning House), Tom Shankland (The Children) and Paul Davis (The Body). Of those filmmakers, I'm most familiar with Hogan, who has consistently plowed a fiercely independent, often uncomfortable path in his work, which includes the haunting Lie Still, and a nicely...

Steve Oram offered horror and laughs in equal measure as the homicidally angry Chris in Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers. For a future film, he’s planning to cut out even the dark comedy and focus solely on the horror, as he’s set to star in Its Walls Were Blood alongside Edward Hogg and Pollyanna McIntosh.Blood, a title that reads like the worst ever TripAdvisor hotel review, is planned as a portmanteau film with four stories set in the same house. The writer/directors – Sean Hogan, Paul Hyett, Tom Shankland and Paul Davis – will chronicle the haunted residence’s dark history from the 19th century to the present day.Conner Chapman, Ruth Bradley, Rosie Day, Sam Gittins, Scott Chambers and Belinda Stewart-Wilson make up the rest of the cast for the horror, which should be cranking its cameras later this year.Oram is also part of the cast for...

There has been, over the past few years, a growing trend in British horror for setting movies in abandoned housing estates and tower blocks. Joining the growing ranks is this years Frightfest film, The Forgotten, which sees a father and son forced to squat in an empty London council estate scheduled for demolition, seemingly abandoned by the mother. A dark, creepy and foreboding place, the flat is no place for a family; even less so after 14 year old Tommy starts to hear strange noises coming from the boarded-up flat next door…

And Tribeca Film Festival 2014 is a wrap! While we put together our interview footage and write up some full reviews, let's dive back into our mini reviews so you'll know what movies to watch for as they nab distribution.
Preservation - directed by Christopher Denham (USA)
A disgruntled vet, his work-obsessed brother and his somewhat timid wife trek into an off limits nature preserve to live off the land, hunt with their dog... and fight for their lives!! And that's pretty much the whole plot.
The film takes a great deal of time at the front end setting up every little thing that unfolds in the back end but fails to flesh out likable characters you'll not want to see killed or present villains that elicit any emotion from the viewer whatsoever. Offering nothing new to a sub-genre that has plenty of titles to choose from, Preservation should be left out to rot.

Paul Davis, director of the An American Werewolf in London documentary Beware the Moon and the superb short film Him Indoors, is back in the directors chair fro another short film entitled The Body – a tale of a murderer (Alfie Allen) who uses the cover of Halloween night to causally transport his latest victim from the scene of the crime to his final resting place. Wrapping the body in tarpaulin and dragging it through the busy streets of London as bloody Halloween prop, all goes to plan until an old school mate (Christian Brassington) recognises the murderer and drags him along to a swanky Halloween party nearby, where a chance meeting with a beautiful girl (Hannah Tointon) takes his evening on an even bigger turn for the bizarre…
