It’s not unusual to see a musical based on a movie or TV show or even a comic. But “Rogers: The Musical” might be the first one created from a throwaway joke in a TV show spun-off from a film series based on comic books. Audiences can now check out the mini-musical, which runs about a tight half hour, at Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater, through Aug. 31. I was lucky enough to witness the opening performance last week, followed by a panel discussion with some of the key creatives.
“Rogers” first came to life in the Disney+ show “Hawkeye,” in which Jeremy Renner’s titular Avenger finds himself taking in a Broadway show with his kids. The show hits a little too close to home, as it turns out to be an adaptation of the life of his friend Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America. The show...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is obsessed with Captain America and it always has been. Even though the Joe Biden lookalike bid his superhero friends farewell 10 whole movies ago, he's somehow always top of mind — whether it's Sam Wilson struggling to follow in his footsteps or Peter Parker attempting murder atop Cap's giant fallen shield from the Statue of Liberty. But by far, the greatest tribute to America's Ass was the dazzling musical that took fictional Broadway by storm in the Disney+ series "Hawkeye." So if you haven't been able to shake the memory of "Rogers: The Musical" from your brain, then prepare to celebrate some very good news: Steve Rogers will officially take center stage in his own one-act musical!
Disney Parks announced the news via Twitter, sharing a brief teaser video and writing, "A short one-act musical is coming for a limited time this summer to Disney California Adventure Park!

Slackers don’t usually get very far in musicals. From Oklahoma! to Gypsy and beyond, American-style can-do-ism is built into the form; it’s hard to mumble a showstopper. And yet here is Found, the touching and clever new musical at the Atlantic, about a bunch of 20-somethings with nearly flatline ambitions. You would think that its authors — Eli Bolin (music and lyrics) and Hunter Bell and Lee Overtree (book) — would have found it nearly impossible to scale theatrical songs to such characters. But when Davy, their protagonist, gets fired first thing from his barely-a-job writing listings for a Chicago alt-weekly and the scope of his world shrinks to the diameter of a joint, they find the perfect expression of his downsize dreams in an "I Want" song called “Weird Day.” “I want do something that I love,” he sings, “and do it with people that I love.” Found is...

With Title Of Show receiving mostly glowing reviews for its London premiere, I couldn't help but hope that the creative team that took the quirky, meta-musical from Off-Off-Broadway, to Off-Broadway, to Broadway Jeff Bowen, Hunter Bell, Susan Blackwell, Heidi Blickenstaff, Michael Berresse, and Larry Pressgrove are taking a few moments to arrive at the intersection of Now not the past or future, Here exactly where they are, and This whatever it is they're doing to be truly present and enjoy this moment of their lives a little more clearly. All of this brought me around to the cast album for their sophomore show Now. Here. This., which was funded by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. Living in Houston, I completely missed the premiere of this show however, everything that made Title Of Show so endearing is present and improved upon in the semi-autobiographical musical's cast album that is as entertaining...

Review Billy Grifter 26 Jun 2013 - 10:15
Defiance finally begins to motor with this week's revealing, unpredictable, captivating story. Here's Billy's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 The Bride Wore Black
To say that Defiance has been a slow burn is probably a major understatement, because what this show desperately needed was this type of story about five episodes back. In The Bride Wore Black we learned more about the history of Defiance, the major characters, and their motivations than we've been given all season. And, not a minute too soon for this reviewer.
The story was a basic whodunit, for the murder of Kenya's husband seven years previously. Though it was pretty obvious early on who was the most likely candidate, even if the writers very noticeably avoiding giving her a motive, while spreading them about to other characters so generously. The upside of this was that we got to see very different versions of Datak,...

Defiance has fully recovered from its recent plague and "The Bride Wore Black" finally brought us to the nuptials of Romeo and Juliet, Christie McCawley and Alak Tarr.
Like their literary counterparts, Christie and Alak have had a rocky relationship due to family drama and racial/cultural differences. Thankfully, though, we were treated to a happy ending with a wedding instead of the story following William Shakespeare’s lead into tragedy.
There were a few surprises along the way. First and foremost was Rafe McCawley with a twofer. He figured out that Datak Tarr was using the wedding as a way to get access to the McCawley mines and took steps to prevent him from ever getting it.
The second shock was him accepting Alak as the person Christie loved and that being enough for him to be willing to take him in if Datak turned him away for marrying Christie.

Jessica Simpson showed off her growing baby bump in spandex while out to lunch in La with fiancé Eric Johnson and their daughter, Maxwell, yesterday. The soon-to-be family of four headed to King's Fish House in casual fashion as Eric balanced Maxwell on his forearm and Jessica tailed behind them. Jessica hasn't let her second pregnancy slow her down lately, since she and her family jetted out of La together a few weeks ago and also made several wedding appearances over the past few months. Today a sneak peak from CaCee Cobb and Donald Faison's December wedding was released and featured a cameo of the pregnant maid of honor. Wedding and travel plans aside, Jessica can fully focus on the upcoming birth of her second child now that Fashion Star has wrapped for the season. Last Friday, Hunter Bell was crowned the show's winner, crediting her success to Jessica's mentoring.

Season 2 of NBC's "Fashion Star" came to an end on Friday night, with finalists Hunter Bell, Cassandra Hobbins and Daniel Silverstein challenged to create a capsule collection for Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Express.
In the end, Bell took the title and her winning capsule collections will be carried online at each store, as well as in 50 Macy's locations and 15 Express locations nationwide. After sitting down with the buyers, Caprice Willard, Terron Schaefer and Erika DeSalvatore, Bell chose to focus Express, tailoring her clothes to fit their edgier aesthetic. Her collections were sold to the buyers for a grand prize total of $3 million.
While Bell walked away a winner, the fate of the series itself looks much less rosier. Earning a second season after middling ratings, "Fashion Star" was moved to Fridays, where it didn't exactly light any fires. NBC is set to reveal their 2013-14 line-up Sunday.

The finale of Fashion Star is coming up quick (May 10), so every move the designers make could mean the difference between fashion life or fashion death. Case in point: Hunter Bell, who can't decide what route to go with her new dress design. Thankfully, she has fashion mogul Jessica Simpson to guide her. Silence! - The Musical The 9th Space Theatre at P.S. 122, NYC
Of the many attempts to chase the legacy of the 1982 benchmark in horror/comedy of the musical variety that is Little Shop of Horrors, Silence! makes a fair play to place. Brandishing a well-equipped arsenal of deadpan, vulgarity, camp, and a wide array of theatrical references, this musical parody of Silence of the Lambs makes killing look easy.
While it is doubtful that any score in this unlikely sub-genre will ever live up to the catchy, simplistic brilliance of Alan Menken (before he whored himself out to Disney), Silence! picks up a ball that was dropped Off-Broadway years ago and has been shamelessly fumbled ever since. In short, it's now safe to go see a musical mock-up of a horror film classic again.
This cast delivers many standout performances. Jenn Harris deconstructs Jodie Foster, offering up a few...
