Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!” Gatwa says, bursting into an infectious fit of laughter. It’s a frequent occurrence as he speaks with Variety on a chilly March day over lemon ginger tea at the Langham hotel in London. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and...

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

Robin Williams’ 1995 adventure fantasy Jumanji is a favorite to many movie buffs. The film features one of the earliest screen appearances of Kirsten Dunst. However, the filming of Jumanji was not an entirely pleasant experience for the Spider-Man actress. Dunst shared that she was in immense pain while filming the memorable chandelier scene from the Joe Johnston directorial.

Sleeping Dogs is a thriller directed by Adam Cooper starring Russell Crowe. With Karen Gillian, Marton Csokas, and Tommy Flanagan. It is based on the novel by E.O. Chirovici.
“Sleeping Dogs” does not present as an original thriller or a film we haven’t seen before. Rather, it’s a movie that plays it safe, focusing on adhering to the classic guidelines of a psychological murder thriller: offering a touch of titillation for the viewer and most importantly, intriguing them through the progressive unraveling of the mystery via plot twists. It attempts on both fronts and succeeds, albeit without much creativity, thus undermining the effectiveness of those twists.
The premise seems promising, albeit reminiscent of a mashup between Memento and Final Analysis, but ultimately fails to replicate either of them.
Sleeping Dogs The Plot
A detective who has undergone experimental Alzheimer’s treatment is tasked with reviewing a murder case he was previously involved with.

Chris Pratt is presently a household name with his experience in renowned franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. The role of Peter Quill was a turning point in his career. The MCU character needed him to go through an intense workout and diet routine which was key in elevating him to international stardom.

2023 was a rough year for Disney, with almost all of their films and shows losing at the box office or on streaming. The only real highlight was the third entry in the popular Guardians of the Galaxy series at Marvel. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $845.6 Million worldwide against a budget of $250 Million. The film marked the last time director James Gunn helmed a Marvel project, and the last time the original cast would all be together on screen.
Since then, not only has James Gunn departed for Warner Bros. to head up their DC Universe of films, both Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer) and Zoe Saldaña (Gamora) have expressed their desire to leave the series, leaving behind only Star Lord, Rocket and Groot from the original team.

Actor and recent Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr. is known for his decade-long role as Iron Man in the MCU. The actor laid the foundations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside director Jon Favreau and producer Kevin Feige. The film is largely credited with having changed how superhero films were perceived in Hollywood.
Downey Jr.’s off-screen persona often includes a self-aware yet inflated sense of ego. However, even he set it aside to name James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the best film in the franchise. The Oppenheimer star mentioned how he was surprised by how great the film was, with relatively unknown characters, and ended up being so important for the MCU.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded exponentially since Iron Man came out in 2008, especially in the last few years. There have been several memorable films in the franchise, and James Gunn was at the helm of quite a few of them.
The director took on a group of misfits and delivered The Guardian of the Galaxy, a film that set the bar higher within the MCU. The film generated a lot of buzz throughout the filming process, and every now and then, a bit of trivia keeps percolating down to fans on social media.
Gunn often engages with fans on social media, sharing tidbits himself. Given the scope of the universe, there is no dearth of rumors as well. Unsurprisingly, when a casting rumor went viral online a few years ago, he took it upon himself to shut it down.

Most know Karen Gillan as Nebula in the MCU or from the newer Jumanji films. Or if you’re a weirdo like me you remember her from her great work in the third season of Ntsf:sd:suv. As her time as Nebula draws to a close, she’s been popping up in some really interesting Indie work. While her role was brief, she had quite the screen presence in last year’s Next Exit. And I’m not sure if you’re aware but Russell Crowe has been absolutely killing it lately. So I was very excited to see Gillan and Crowe team up for a new crime thriller.
Sleeping Dogs takes the viewer on a very interesting journey of discovery. Gillan’s Laura Baines is quite layered and allows a little more grey area.

“Sleeping Dogs,” starring Russell Crowe as a retired cop with Alzheimer’s disease, is a half-rusted scrap heap of a detective mystery. It’s patchy, it’s badly lit, it’s glum, it’s overloaded with suspects, and it’s almost proud of its contrivances. Yet in its logy, booby-trapped way, it keeps you watching.
Crowe, with a white beard and shaved head that make him look like Santa Claus as a melancholy biker, plays Roy Freeman, who was forced to turn in his badge after he caused a drunk-driving accident. Now, he’s in the thick of serious midstage dementia; he has written labels on masking tape and plastered them around his apartment, so that he’ll be reminded of everything from his own name to where the hot water is. The gloss on “Memento” is obvious enough, but it’s also a coincidence that the film is being...

Plot: An ex-homicide detective (Russell Crowe) with memory loss is forced to solve a brutal murder, only to uncover chilling secrets from his forgotten past.
Review: Russell Crowe has been in a bit of a career resurgence lately so I’ve been pretty excited whenever a new film of his releases. No matter the quality of the film, Crowe himself tends to be can’t miss. And that’s usually because he’s playing some eccentric character, that stands out against his more bland surroundings. Thankfully with the likes of Karen Gillan and Tommy Flanagan showing up, Crowe doesn’t have to carry the entire film himself. But I definitely recommend checking your brain at the door.

You know you’re getting old when your favorite movie stars are starting to play characters afflicted with dementia. Arriving shortly on the heels of Knox Goes Away, featuring Michael Keaton as a hitman suffering from the condition, is Adam Cooper’s neo-noir thriller starring Russell Crowe as an ex-cop whose mental condition has deteriorated so dramatically that he’s forced to leave notes plastered throughout his apartment, Memento-style. Despite the plot element’s familiarity, it’s still the most intriguing element of Sleeping Dogs, a sluggishly rendered mystery that audiences will have long stopped caring about before it reaches its conclusion.
Crowe plays Roy Freeman, a former homicide detective whose sad state of being is immediately signified not only by those notes offering the simplest of reminders but also the stack of Hungry-Man frozen dinners in his freezer. He’s wearing a large bandage on his head, the remnant...

When the March box office seems to be tailing off after a weaker weekend, who you gonna call? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview to find out.
For the third weekend this month, we have the potential for a movie to open with more than $40 million after literally months without one. That new movie is Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the sequel to the Jason Reitman-directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which helped revive the franchise in 2021 with what is now lovingly referred to as a “requel,” i.e. a combo of a reboot and a sequel.
“Frozen Empire” brings back the newest Ghostbusters, played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenzie Grace, and other characters from “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” as well as the OGs (Original Ghostbusters): Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and even Annie Potts. Intentionally or not, Sleeping Dogs invites comparison to Memento. In Adam Cooper’s steadfastly self-serious directorial debut, a bedraggled ex-homicide detective, Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe), is tasked with solving a brutal murder that he can’t recall due to his memory loss. But the comparison to Christopher Nolan’s breakout doesn’t do Sleeping Dogs any favors. For one, we know we’re in trouble from the moment we see Freeman stumbling through a decrepit apartment, its otherwise sparse walls adorned with handwritten messages that exist as much for his benefit as ours, like the unfortunately hilarious “You Have Alzheimers.”
From the start, the film lays it on thick. Freeman’s apartment has all the markers of someone whose mind is slowing deteriorating: staplers that have been left in water glasses, melted pieces of technology in the microwave, and half-eaten meals on top of furniture. The man wears the thickest...

It’s been four years since The Avenue first launched, and the indie distributor just scored its first top 10 film with William Eubank’s “Land of Bad.”
The action flick starring Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle and Milo Ventimiglia opened on Feb. 16, had the fourth-highest per screen average over the holiday weekend and was the only independent film in the top 10.
While indie films in awards contention can often make a modest box office dent, it’s unusual for an action film like “Land of Bad” to reach such heights: the actioner’s four-day total on opening weekend was $2.1 million from 1,057 screens.
President of domestic marketing and distribution JJ Caruth says the box office success of “Land of Bad” is a strong signal that audiences are hungry for more action-packed movies. “I’m just happy to see an independent film succeed at the box office. It’s...

In a good way."It's a cathartic experience. It's someone dealing with the end of their life, and it's told in a very imaginative way, and it's just beautiful. It's a celebration of life, I suppose. I think we could all do with a bit of that."It is the second time that the former 'Doctor Who' star has collaborated with Flanagan after she appeared in his 2013 horror film 'Oculus' and she had glowing praise for the director.

Over the years, the MCU has provided its fans with a rich tapestry of intergalactic adventures and showdowns between the good, the evil, and the grey, and one particularly fascinating cog in the machine has been Karen Gillan’s Nebula.
Among one of the most memorable characters in the superhero film franchise, the former cybernetic assassin’s journey, even after her redemption in the past few movies, culminates into an experience of genuine happiness at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Scottish actress Karen Gillan is certainly one of the hottest young stars of the modern era, best known for playing or playing Amy Pond, a primary companion to the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who, as well as Nebula in the MCU. But, one of her recent major roles has also been in the reboot/sequels of the Jumanji film series, where she portrayed Ruby Roundhouse, a character from the game.
The original Jumanji movie starring the late Robin Williams has become a children’s classic and the series was continued with a soft reboot/sequel titled Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle back in 2017. The movie starred Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and – of course – Gillan, all of whom reprised their roles in the 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level.

"Kung Fu Panda 4" topped the box office over the weekend, managing to overtake last week's champion "Dune: Part Two." Make no mistake, nobody is crying for Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic as the sequel managed to stay atop the charts internationally over the weekend. More than that, the movie's success out of the gate has cemented Jack Black's status as an unquestionable movie star capable of putting butts in seats.
