Xavier Beauvois’s tenderly drawn film sees a French policeman abandon all his certainties after a tragic misjudgment
Xavier Beauvois is the actor-turned-director whose Of Gods and Men in 2010 is one of the great French movies of the 21st century; he also has the honour of a cameo, as himself, in the final series of the Netflix comedy Call My Agent. His new film is really intriguing, a film deeply rooted in a close-knit community, with excellent performances, a sophisticated control of narrative tempo and – at least initially – a tragic force that could almost be compared with Elia Kazan. Yet I have to say that this power is dissipated by a disappointing ending in which the film, as its English title warns us, drifts away.
Jérémie Renier plays Laurent, a small-town cop in Normandy in northern France, devoted to his partner, Marie, played by Marie-Julie Maille – Beauvois’s own partner...

Ben Howard has dropped “Crowhurst’s Meme,” the second single from his upcoming album Collections From the Whiteout, out March 26th via Republic Records.
Featuring Yussef Dayes, the song is accompanied by a video that portrays distorted images of Howard in a field as the track ebbs and flows with chaotic synths. “Saccharine party baby/Laughing and ha horrah!” he sings. “Well, what’s a riverbed sleep?/Coveting, cheating.”

Come Sail Away: Marsh Gets Morose with Tale of Doomed Sailor
Director James Marsh tackles the tragedy of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst in The Mercy, his first theatrical feature since his 2014 Oscar winning portrait of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Starring Colin Firth as the doomed competitor (who is nearly twenty years older than Crowhurst at the time of his death), Marsh’s film arrives shortly after Simon Rumley’s 2017 Crowhurst, which covers the same ground, but thanks to the headlining Oscar winners of Firth and Rachel Weisz, the latter film is destined to reach a wider audience.…...

Following last weekend’s big roll out of The Favourite from Fox Searchlight, this weekend will likely see a pause for awards contenders making splashy Specialty box office numbers. Orion Pictures is giving a limited start to comedy-horror-musical Anna And the Apocalypse, starring Ella Hunt and Malcom Cumming. Timed to the holiday season, the title fits the company’s strategy of releasing films that target specific audiences. Screen Media, meanwhile, has two very different features heading out, though both will have one-time event screenings around the country (on different dates) in addition to specific targeted regular runs. James Marsh’s The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz opens Village East in New York through the distributor, while animated feature Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer will have regular engagements starting in New York and L.A. Friday in a day and date release in addition to event screenings in over 100 cities.

When men and women dream, they can literally fly, yet like Icarus’ journey, triumph can just as easily transform into tragedy if exuberance overcomes common sense. Indeed, what brings out the best in people can also lead to the worst when good intentions are met with the harsh realities of science and nature. Director James Marsh takes this up in “The Mercy” with an exploration of real-life sailor Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth), whose attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1968 and ’69 shook the sailing community to its core.

I had never heard of Donald Crowhurst before seeing James Marsh’s film The Mercy. This is unsurprising since the British Sunday Times‘ Golden Globe Race of which he was a competitor occurred in 1968, not quite fifteen years before my birth. And if his would-be return-date to Teignmouth, England of July 1969 after yachting around the world without stop or assistance was ingrained in my mind for any event — auspicious or infamous — it was the moon landing. So when the synopsis described this amateur sailor as a man who sought to fabricate said journey despite never leaving the Atlantic Ocean due to seven months of disastrous circumstances, I obviously believed him to be a charlatan. As written by Scott Z. Burns, however, the truth proves much more complex.

Colin Firth takes on the role of Donald Crowhurst in an upcoming film The Mercy, which tells the inspirational true story of an amateur sailor who decided to build a boat and sail around the world without making any stops along the way. What follows is a harrowing adventure as his wife (Rachel Weisz) stays behind with the kids and hopes that he comes homes alive!
The Mercy was directed by James Marsh, who is the Oscar-nominated director of The Theory of Everything. I enjoy these kinds of stories, and this one looks like it made for a great movie. It might not be for everyone, but stories about ordinary people who do extraordinary things inspire me.

"We're always connected, no matter how far apart we are." Screen Media Films has debuted a new official Us trailer for the indie sailing drama The Mercy, which tells the story of a humble middle-aged man who takes an unfinished boat on a race around the world to add some adventure in his life. This already opened in Europe earlier this year, but is just getting a special theatrical Us release in November (and on December 6th). This film tells the triumphant, inspiring, incredible true story of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who decided to take on the task of competing in the 1968 Golden Globe Race - sailing around the world solo. Colin Firth stars as Donald Crowhurts, along with Rachel Weisz as his wife Clare, plus David Thewlis, Jonathan Bailey, Tim Downie, Andrew Buchan, Genevieve Gaunt, Adrian Schiller. It still looks like your standard sailing survival, look-how-crazy-it-is adventure movie.

Rachel Weisz is heading into a major fall with her supporting turn in The Favourite, but it’s not the only film from the actress arriving this month. She also stars alongside Colin Firth in The Mercy, which follows infamous yachting fraud Donald Crowhurst, who sent falsified reports of his location as his vastly underprepared crew tried to stay the course.
Coming from The Theory of Everything and Man on Wire director James Marsh, Screen Media and Trafalgar Releasing will release the film on November 30th in limited release, followed by nationwide, one-night-only screenings on December 6. Check out the trailer below.

In October 1968, Donald Crowhurst, a 35-year-old engineer and father of four, embarked on one of the last great adventures of the 20th Century. He was one of nine men who set out from the English coast that autumn as part of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, chasing to be either the first or the fastest man to circumnavigate the globe single-handed and non-stop. But for Donald the dream turned into a nightmare. Tragic, heartbreaking and enthralling, Crowhurst is a tribute to a brave man who was too proud to fail and too much alone to live.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A little bit psychedelic, a little bit queasy, a little bit experimental, a lot existential, this is a jarring, visceral portrait of the around-the-world sailor in over his head. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

The story of Donald Crowhurst has captivated folks ever since the amateur sailor died while competing in an around-the-world yacht race sponsored by the Sunday Times.
The real-life story follows family man and businessman Crowhurst, who, once he realized he was dangerously in over his head while in the race, began reporting false positions and fabricating his logbook. His boat was eventually found adrift with evidence pointing to a mental breakdown and likely suicide.

There’s something rather endearing about Simon Rumley’s small budget biopic in which he details the mental unravelling of yachtsman Donald Crowhurst, just before his disappearance whilst trying to solo circumnavigate the globe in 1968.
Released a mere 6 weeks after James Marsh’s The Mercy, which pretty much told the same story, albeit with a bigger budget and bigger stars (Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz play the doomed sailor and his wife Clare), Crowhurst offers a flawed, yet deeply engaging story about a weekend sailor who cheated his way into winning the first Sunday Times Golden Globe prize by lying about his whereabouts during the race. Crowhurst was eventually declared winner by default when his competitors withdrew from the race one by one, however the sailor never made it back home to collect his prize and is believed to have killed himself out of the sheer embarrassment of being found out.

Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz can’t save this dramatisation of a tragic real-life yachting adventure from foundering
The somewhat dispiriting real-life story of Donald Crowhurst, the amateur sailor who in 1968-9 lost his pride, his mind and then his life in a single-handed yacht race to circumnavigate the world, has long exerted a fascination for film-makers. Nicolas Roeg once tried to film the story. In 2006, the documentary Deep Water explored the tragedy. And this big-budget take on the tale, buoyed up by the star power of Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, was made at the same time as a smaller rival project, Crowhurst by Simon Rumley.
One can see the attraction of the story to director James Marsh: Crowhurst (Firth) has a similar maverick eccentricity and forceful self-belief to that of high-wire walker Philippe Petit, the subject of his documentary Man on Wire. But for all its technical prowess – the sound design,...

Directors who worked with Jóhann Jóhannsson are mourning the loss of the Icelandic composer, who died of unknown causes on February 9. The recipient of back-to-back Oscar nominations in 2015 (“The Theory of Everything,” for which he won a Golden Globe) and 2016 (“Sicario”), Jóhannsson was 48 years old.
“I am devastated,” “The Theory of Everything” director James Marsh wrote in an email to IndieWire. “I’ve lost a dear friend and we have all lost the beautiful music he carried within him. Jóhann was a brilliant and unique artist. His personality is alive in his music — thoughtful, inquisitive, gracious, idiosyncratic, sometimes melancholy, sometimes witty and above all, pure.”
Jóhannsson also composed the score for “The Mercy,” directed by Marsh and based on the true story of Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth), a British amateur sailor who died while competing in a globe-crossing yacht race in 1969; it was released this weekend in the UK and Australia.

The tragic fibber of the high seas’ descent into despair and delusion is subtly explored by Firth, but the film flinches from the sailor’s horrible denouement
The true story of Donald Crowhurst is about Englishness, sadness and shame. It’s been retold many times on screen since investigative journalist Nick Tomalin co-wrote a pioneering 1970 book about him, The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst. This new version has Colin Firth as the tragic Quixote fibber of the high seas, Rachel Weisz as his wife Clare and David Thewlis as Rodney Hallworth, his breezy press agent.

Few films have stirred our emotions quite in the same way that The Mercy did. Telling the true story of Donald Crowhurst, this James Marsh production is a tale about misplaced optimism verging on delusion. Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz star as the leading duo and to mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of interviewing them both.
We began by asking the affable pair how much they knew of Donald’s story before getting involved in the project, and giving the profound, moving nature of this narrative, we also discussed whether they can be moved by the film in the same way a viewer can, or whether that’s impossible given their involvement.
Then we asked the big question; why did Donald do it? Why did he put everything at risk, to leave behind his wife and children and set sail – putting his own life on the line?...

Colin Firth stars in one of two new films about yachtsman Crowhurst and his disastrous 1968 round-the-world race. Is the studio distributing both films hoping for smooth sailing?
Fifty years ago, an amateur sailor named Donald Crowhurst entered the Golden Globe solo round-the-world yacht race. He had little funding and less experience compared with his eight rivals, but he set off, anyway, on 31 October 1968, on a trimaran he had helped to modify and equip. It wasn’t what you’d call shipshape. The boat’s wiring was a bird’s nest, and screws kept coming loose, but if Crowhurst had delayed any longer he would have been disqualified. Dreaming of being the first person to circumnavigate the planet singlehandedly without touching land en route, he left England and his family behind.
Brave British hobbyist reaching for the impossible? Homegrown pluck and ingenuity versus foreign expertise? It’s the kind of story...

Though his preceding feature The Theory of Everything picked up numerous Oscar nominations (even winning one), James Marsh’s The Mercy is the more accomplished piece of cinema, albeit overlooked at this year’s award’s season. There are parallels too, in how we’re focusing on one man’s steely drive and blissful sense of optimism and ambition, and how that can affect his wife and children.
Colin Firth plays the man in question, the idealistic yachtsman Donald Crowhurst who decides to take on the 1968 Global Globe Race, where he must sail around the world, on his own, without stopping. Though such an endeavour is aimed at more experienced, diligent sailors, he is determined to prove the doubters wrong, seeking to design and build his very own boat and set off before the approaching deadline. His wife Clare (Rachel Weisz) is convinced he’ll eventually turn off the idea,...

Colin Firth embarks on nautical deception in this surprisingly compelling true-life drama…
I knew very little about Donald Crowhurst walking into The Mercy, and preserving that element of surprise might be the way to get the most out of James Marsh’s true-life drama. A casual Google will quickly throw up some of the finer details of Crowhurst’s story – so if Colin Firth’s latest is on your radar and you’re unfamiliar with what transpired then you may want to keep it that way. Of course, we’d dearly like you to stick around for this review, so bear with us while we navigate around a few spoilers of historical record.
We first meet Firth’s Crowhurst as he’s desperately trying to sell his nautical navigation device the Navicator. Punters won’t bite, and there’s a sense that his business is failing. Crowhurst himself is an amateur weekend sailor and,...

A handsome period bio-drama about the doomed final voyage of yachtsman and fraudster Donald Crowhurst, The Mercy comes with an illustrious Britfilm pedigree. The director is James Marsh, whose credits include Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire and acclaimed Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz headline the cast. And yet this unresolved maritime mystery feels oddly flat and functional, diluting a tragic tale full of unanswered questions into an anodyne middlebrow weepie. It opens on U.K. and Irish screens later this week, with a staggered global rollout to follow.

"I can't go on, and I can't go home... so where else is there?" StudioCanal UK has revealed a new 60-second trailer for the indie drama The Mercy, which tells the story of a humble man who takes an unfinished boat on a race around the world for an adventure. We posted the first UK trailer last fall and it looks mildly enjoyable, with some inspirational moments. This film tells the triumphant, inspiring, incredible true story of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who decided to take on the task of competing in the 1968 Golden Globe Race - sailing around the world solo. Colin Firth stars as Crowhurts, and the cast includes Rachel Weisz as his wife Clare, along with David Thewlis, Jonathan Bailey, Tim Downie, Andrew Buchan, Genevieve Gaunt, Adrian Schiller. I'm not really into this one too much, but it might be worth a look. Here's the new 60-second...

The Theory of Everything and Man on Wire director James Marsh is once again looking back to history for his next film. In The Mercy, he’s shipping Colin Firth around the globe as infamous yachting fraud Donald Crowhurst, who sent falsified reports of his location as his vastly underprepared crew tried to stay the course.
Also starring Rachel Weisz, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a February release in the United Kingdom. With a mix of romance and adventure, hopefully it has more of a bite than Marsh’s last film. Lionsgate haven’t set a U.S. release date yet, but one see the preview below.

Chiefly known for his inventive indie horror and thriller work, Brit director Simon Rumley’s take on the tragic true story of maritime adventurer Donald Crowhurst is notable for several reasons. One is a rare executive producer credit for that grand old alchemist of British cult cinema, Nicolas Roeg (Walkabout, Don’t Look Now, Bad Timing), who once tried to film this story himself. Roeg is a key influence on Rumley, not just on the hallucinatory visuals of Crowhurst but also on his stylish 2016 psycho-noir Fashionista.

With Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz leading the cast and The Theory of Everything’s James Marsh directing, The Mercy — first announced in January 2015 — sparked an immediate buzz in the industry as a project with serious awards potential (and with three Oscar winners as headline names).

It’s been over 12 years since Helen Fielding’s beloved character Bridget Jones had been seen on the silver screen in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. In the time since then, it seemed like we’d never see Renee Zellwegger back in her most popular role ever again. Somehow, things finally came together for Bridget Jones’s Baby, which (as one can assume from the title) has Zellwegger’s Jones pregnant with two possible fathers.
One of the options is Patrick Swayze as a billionaire that Bridget has an encounter with at a music festival, but fans of the original movie will be more excited by Bridget’s second option, which is Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy, the emotion-free prosecutor who when last we saw him, had proposed to Bridget. In the time between movies, things had changed, and we learn that Darcy ended up marrying someone else as...

The Theory Of Everything director James Marsh is currently occupied with another promising biopic in the form of The Mercy. We don’t know too much about it just yet, but it revolves around Donald Crowhurst, a yachting fraud who, during a sailing competition, suffered a mental breakdown at sea.
The title comes from one of the journal logs that the sailor kept, detailing his “wildly dangerous voyage.” We use quotes because according to many, Crowhurt was a fraud and most of what he wrote wasn’t entirely true. When he eventually realized that he wasn’t properly equipped for the voyage, he began falsifying his locations on the ship-to-shore radio messages he sent – which, as you can gather, didn’t end well for him.
Taking the lead here is The King’s Speech star Colin Firth, who appears in two first look photos from the film today,...

After the mostly positive response to his latest feature The Theory of Everything, director James Marsh is sticking to the winning formula with another biopic. This time, he’s shipping Colin Firth around the globe as infamous yachting fraud Donald Crowhurst, who sent falsified reports of his location as his vastly underprepared crew tried to stay the course.
Titled The Mercy after a specific journal log Crowhurst made, reports from Daily Mail suggest the film will capture quite a heroic journey. “It comes down to that saying how a man’s reach must exceed his grasp. We all have dreams, and we all try to put those plans into action. And he [Crowhurst] saw himself as able to achieve something,” producer Pete Czernin says.
Also starring Rachel Weisz, see the first images above and below.
The Mercy will be released in early 2017 in the U.K. and is awaiting a U.
