Lionsgate reported mixed results for its fiscal third quarter, with revenue of $998.5 million comfortably exceeding Wall Street estimates but adjusted earnings of 14 cents per share undershooting forecasts for 18 cents.
Like other traditional media peers, Lionsgate had sought to manage the message of taking a hit to the balance sheet in order to invest in streaming. It has said it plans to put about $150 million into Starz International in fiscal 2020. The outlay has been generating results for Starz, with 2.1 million Ott subscribers being added in the period, for a total of 8.6 million. Overall global subscribers reached 28.5 million.
It was an eventful quarter, with the company inking a carriage agreement with Comcast for pay-tv network Starz and the film division releasing a commercial and critical hit with Knives Out.
The film operation, which has been making strides after stumbling in the latter part of 2018, saw revenue rise 30% in the quarter, to $473.9 million.

Starz has finally found its new CEO, promoting Jeffrey Hirsch up from COO, to replace Chris Albrecht.
Albrecht stepped down in March after more than eight years leading the pay-cable network. Hirsch and the current leadership team, including president of programming Carmi Zlotnik, had been essentially in charge of Starz, working closely with Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer.
But Thursday’s announcement gives the pay cable network an official CEO for the first time seven months.

When “Power” began its run on Starz in 2014, Curtis Jackson was better known in the entertainment industry as the pugnacious rapper 50 Cent. Few of those involved with the show expected him to emerge as a force behind the premium cable channel’s most-watched series.
But Jackson, 44, has never had a shortage of ambition. He used his rap-star clout to help bring “Power” to fruition as a co-star and as exec producer alongside creator and showrunner Courtney Kemp. Now, as “Power” winds through its sixth and final season, which bowed Aug. 25, Jackson is busy expanding his horizons as a producer for Starz and other outlets, notably ABC, where he is behind the midseason drama “For Life.”
Jackson added directing to his résumé after helming his first episode of “Power,” the pivotal third installment — called “Forget About Dre” — of the 10-episode season. He also signed a mammoth multi-series production deal with Starz last year.

Comcast told Lionsgate that it planned on dropping the Starz network, according to a report released Friday.
The Information reported that Comcast intended to drop Starz and Starz Encore from its main bundle of channels by the end of 2019, which could cause the company to lose millions of subscribers. The network is home to several popular shows, including “Power and “Outlander.” The former show is a particular hit for the network, with most episodes from Season 4 and Season 5 pulling in around 1.5 million viewers.
Although “Power” is currently airing its sixth and final season on Starz, the series will live on in spin-off shows in what Starz president of programing Carmi Zlotnik referred to as the “Power cinematic universe.”
A Comcast representative did not return a request for comment but Variety cited an anonymous individual who said that Starz discussions were ongoing and noted that there were still four months to...

A ratings hit for Starz since its premiere in 2014, “Power” has failed to draw the same kind of attention during awards season; specifically, the series has never been nominated in any category for any of the industry’s top awards, including the Emmys, SAG Awards, and Golden Globes. And while certainly desirous of the recognition, creator/showrunner Courtney A. Kemp and executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson have grown increasingly apathetic.
“For the first couple of years, it was disappointing, because I felt we were doing something new and fresh, and I was hoping that the Emmy voters would take notice, and they didn’t,” said Kemp when asked to address the matter at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills, California. She added that she then made peace with being perpetually snubbed.

Starz has announced the first Power spinoff: Power Book II: Ghost, starring Mary J. Blige.

Starz’s centuries-spanning romance drama Outlander won’t air any new episodes in 2019. The series will return in early 2020, Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch said at TCA Friday.

The sixth and final season of Power is coming next month, and next year.

Nearly six months after Starz CEO Chris Albrecht exited in February, Lionsgate brass is moving closer to a revamp of the premium TV network’s executive structure.
According to insiders, at least one thing is clear: Albrecht is not expected to be replaced as CEO. Instead, Lionsgate chief executive Jon Feltheimer is taking a more active role in overseeing the channel.
As part of his increased involvement, Feltheimer is believed to have had exploratory meetings a few months ago with several Hollywood players (including YouTube global head of original content Susanne Daniels and former HBO programming president Michael Lombardo) to potentially install a new creative at Starz.
That person would work alongside Starz chief operating officer Jeffrey Hirsch, and the two executives would share day-to-day oversight and report to Feltheimer. That two-pronged structure would allow Hirsch to continue to oversee the business and operations side of Starz, while the new exec would focus on programming.

Executive producer 50 Cent has decided that his Starz drama “Power” will in fact, not end after its upcoming sixth season. Except that it’s not really his decision to make.
Even so, the rapper/actor, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, wrote on Tuesday about the impending end of “Power” on his Instagram account: “I Changed my mind Power is not going to be over after season 6. This s— is to good.”
The final season will premiere Sunday, August 25, and features Jackson — whose character Kanan died last season — making his directorial debut. Anthony Hemingway, who directed the series’ first two episodes back in 2014, will helm the series finale. But it won’t be the last from the “Power” universe for the pay cable network.

The hit Starz series “Power” is coming to an end. The upcoming sixth season of the series, which is set to debut on Aug. 25, will be the drama’s last.
Series creator and co-showrunner Courtney A. Kemp teased that new shows set in the “Power” universe are in the works.
“We will follow some of your beloved ‘Power’ characters beyond the scope of the initial series,” Kemp said in a statement. “But we will play with your expectations of which characters, where, and the master timeline of it all, creating a ‘Power’ universe as unpredictable as the original.”
Season 6 will consist of 15 episodes. It will also feature the directorial debut of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson with episode 603 as well as the return of director Anthony Hemingway for the finale. Hemingway previously directed the first two episodes of the series when it debuted in 2014.

The upcoming sixth season of the Courtney Kemp created and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson executive produced NYC underworld drama will be the last for the Starz series. However, the 15-episode August 25 premiering “The Final Betrayal” season won’t be the end of the dirty deeds for the premium cabler’s top offering as planned spinoffs are already in the pipeline.

The hit Starz series, American Gods, based on the 2001 Neil Gaiman novel, has now officially been renewed for its third season. The series just started its second season at Starz and has just found a new showrunner for the series in Charles “Chic” Eglee, who has experience in writing and running shows like The Walking Dead, Dexter, andThe Shield. That experience gives me a lot of faith that Eglee is a fantastic choice and will do great things for the series.
Starz programming boss Carmi Zlotnik had this to say about the addition of Eglee in a statement:
“Audiences continue to worship at the altar of American Gods and we are excited to be able to announce to all the true believers that there is more of this fantastical series to come,”
and then added:
“With Chic at the helm, the invaluable insight and contributions of Neil Gaiman and the...
