Donald Glover’s award-winning series “Atlanta” will enter its second — err, “Robbin’ Season,” on Thursday, and we cannot wait to catch up with Earn and the gang. But while everyone and their mother is a fan of the show, there is one demographic in particular who can appreciate the FX hit unlike any other: Glover’s fellow Derrick Comedy alums. TheWrap recently spoke with former Derrick actors Dominic Dierkes and DC Pierson, their director Dan Eckman and the crew’s producer Meggie McFadden, who all worked with Glover for years as part of the internet sketch comedy group they formed at New...

Fans of Derrick Comedy are well aware it’s where Donald Glover got his start. But while the Emmy winner may be the best-known alum from the internet sketch comedy group formed in 2006, it turns out he wouldn’t consider himself the funniest one. In fact, former Derrick actors Dominic Dierkes and DC Pierson, their director Dan Eckman and the crew’s producer Meggie McFadden tell TheWrap that Glover used to insist he was living in the shadow of someone who wasn’t even a member of Derrick Comedy: his little brother, Stephen. Actor and comedian DC Pierson wrote a novel called The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To, and you can now see part of that book adapted as a short film. In D.C.Pierson‘s “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To,” there’s a boy who can’t sleep and never has to. He’s a freak. A weirdo. That Radiohead song is probably about him, and because he’s got a special power, people in nondescript suits are hunting him down. Pierson is a part of Derrick Comedy alongside Dominic Dierkes and the guy everyone wants to play the new Spider-Man, although it’s been a few years since they’ve put anything out together. Their last big project was the movie Mystery Team in 2010, and while making The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To was announced as a follow-up of sorts, nothing ever came of it, and Pierson got a job at the Apple store in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now, Mystery Team director Dan Eckman and its producer Meggie McFadden have created a short film with...

"Jingle bells. Batman smells. Robin laid an egg." Everyone knows that classic "children's parody rhyme" involving Batman's smelly ways. What if, instead of all the comics, Christopher Nolan's Batman series was based on that rhyme as the source? Our friends at Derrick Comedy—director Dan Eckman, producer Meggie McFadden and DC Pierson—put together this parody trailer for Funny or Die that obviously plays on the current popularity of The Dark Knight Rises, but mixed with the "Batman smells" rhyme. It's short, funny, and will hopefully bring a smile to your face with all the more serious Batman buzz at the moment. "Christopher Nolan picked some unusual source material for the final Dark Knight movie." Here's the video: Eight years after The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to the limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after...

[1] Derrick Comedy may not be a household name quite yet, but it's likely you've stumbled across some of their work before. (At the very least, you're probably aware of its most famous member, Donald Glover.) The comedy group met as students at Nyu, and quickly gained a following for their Internet videos, including "Bro Rape" [2] and "Blowjob Girl," [3] featuring a pre-Office Ellie Kemper. Derrick Comedy then made a leap to the big screen in 2009 with Mystery Team, an underrated indie comedy about three naive high school detectives who get in over their heads. Now the film's director, Dan Eckman, has lined up a couple of new projects that'll reunite him with some of his Derrick Comedy teammates. Read more after the jump. On a recent visit to the Community set, Collider [4] learned that Eckman had signed on to direct an episode of the series, which of course stars his Derrick Comedy colleague Glover.

Mystery Team director Dan Eckman has lined up a couple new directing projects coming up, that I wanted to point out to you. I don't know if you saw the comedy Mystery Team or not, but the movie is a great comedy that I suggest you watch if you haven't seen yet. Eckamn most recently directed the MTV film Worst. Prom. Ever. This is a talented guy who is surrounded by talented people, and there's no doubt that he's a rising director in Hollywood.
It was recently revealed on Collider that Eckman will be directing the 13th episode of Community, which is one of my favorite TV shows right now. It was also revealed that he would be directing an adaptation of the book The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To written by DC Pierson who played one of the lead characters in Mystery Team. A long time ago, we spoke with renaissance man D.C. Pierson about his novel “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To.” It’s a thrilling tale about a gawky young high school lad who loves to draw and the friendship he strikes up with an even gawkier high school lad who never sleeps at all ever. Of course, freakish occurrences like that don’t go unnoticed, and soon they are running from dark forces that plan all sorts of terrible things for them. It’s endearing, thrilling, and strange. It’s the kind of novel that seems written by a sophomore in high school if that sophomore could actually write as well as he thinks he can. Fortunately, and finally, it’s being turned into a movie, and they’re keeping it all in the family. Mystery Team director Dan Eckman will be taking the reins on this one alongside producer of all things...

If you haven't yet seen Derrick Comedy's hilarious flick Mystery Team, you're missing out on a sorely underrated comedy featuring comedians DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes and Donald Glover from NBC's "Community." Now the film's director Dan Eckman is working with at least one member of the comedy group again as Collider has learned that the filmmaker will adapt Pierson's coming-of-age novel The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To. Eckman co-write the script with Pierson and Meggie McFadden (who also wrote, produced and starred in Mystery Team) and they're shopping it to studios now. Unlike Mystery Team, the film is actually a charming coming-of-age tale that also has flares of sci-fi and fantasy. Here's the official synopsis of the book: A wildly original and hilarious debut novel about the typical high school experience: the homework, the awkwardness, and the mutant creatures from another galaxy. When Darren ...

‘Mystery Team’ Director Dan Eckman Plans Adaptation of ‘The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To’
Collider reports that Dan Eckman, who is best known for 2010′s excellent Mystery Team, will be c0-writing and directing an adaptation of DC Pierson‘s novel The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To. Eckman has been a longtime collaborator of Pierson’s, as they both started together in the New York-based sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy. Here’s the plot of the novel:
When Darren Bennett meets Eric Lederer, there’s an instant connection. They share a love of drawing, the bottom rung on the cruel high school social ladder and a pathological fear of girls. Then Eric reveals a secret: He doesn’t sleep. Ever. When word leaks out about Eric’s condition, he and Darren find themselves on the run. Is it the government trying to tap into Eric’s mind, or something far darker? It could be that not sleeping is only part...

Seeing the three performers reunite after reaching the edge of mainstream success, Mystery Team is a satisfying comedy that has potential and momentum to become a cult hit on home video. After premiering at Sundance, followed by a very limited release, Mystery Team can now find its primary resting place on the shelves of loyal Derrick Comedy followers. The Mystery Team is comprised of Jason (Donald Glover), the Master of Disguise, Duncan (DC Pierson), the Boy Genius, and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes) who claims to possess superhuman strength. Ever feel disappointed after hearing great buzz about a film? Well that's what Mystery Team is. It's not a scooby snack of childish deadpan humor but a childish take on humor itself. From time to time, the outside world intrudes in and our "team" is degraded or humiliated, but this just wasn't often enough. If they had made this the entire film, they would have had a winner.
Premise? Three friends have been "detectives" since they were young, solving neighborhood crimes of lost cats and fingers in pies, but they never grew up. Instead, they dress the same, they're in high school, and have the mentalities of a retard. Instead of driving, they ride their bikes and use kiddie walkie talkies for communication. One of them is the leader,...

Calling all amateur sleuths: "Mystery Team" is coming to DVD.
The first feature film by the Internet sensation Derrick Comedy, "Mystery Team" is a comedy following the misadventures of a trio of childhood boy detectives as they attempt to take on a bigger threat. Premiering at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, the movie will be released on DVD May 25 through independent film company Lionsgate.
Meet The Mystery Team: Led by master of disguise Jason (Donald Glover) and backed up by self-proclaimed boy genius Duncan (DC Pierson) and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes), the strongest kid in town, the group solves all the major wrongdoings in their small town, ranging from bullies to missing baseballs. However, now that they're high school seniors, they're not so cute anymore. But when a double homicide rocks the town, Jason is eager to take on his first real case, mainly to impress the daughter (Aubrey Plaza) of the victims.

As such, there will be a limited engagement screening this Friday and Saturday night at the Guild Cinema in Albuquerque, Nm, and showtimes will be announced in several new cities very soon. In addition to the continued roll-out, the Derrick kids will be in New York doing Q&As every night, and...

Unless you were already a fan of their popular sketches on YouTube, you probably hadn't heard of Derrick Comedy before Mystery Team exploded at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, before hitting other festivals and Comic-Con, converting many new fans to Derrick's distinctive brand of comedy. Contrary to first impressions, Derrick Comedy isn't a person but a comedy group, the brainchild of five individuals: actor/writers Donald Glover, D. C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes, director Dan Eckman and producer Meggie McFadden. Their debut feature film plays on the classic kid detective stories of old, but in this case, the Mystery Team have all passed puberty and they're not quite as cute as they used to be as kids. Glover plays Jason Rogers, the team's "Master of...

It’s been a while. Without going into detail, I had some errands that needed taken care of. Space errands. “How’s space,” you might ask? Cold, lonely, shitty TV reception - but surprisingly good bagels. Enough of that, though. You can read the mission report from Nasa. That’s not why I’m here. “Why is he here,” you might be asking yourself? (I totally set you up for that). What could possibly pull me back from the outer reaches of the heavens to join you here, once again, in the written form?

What happens when two young men let their love of movies, comic books, and all things “geek” take over their lives? They run away from their families, bringing only the most essential DVDs and comics to their secret, highly fortified underground bunker in sunny Southern California, where they start recording podcasts that will change the world.
Are they heroes?
No.
Are they geniuses?
Far from it.
Are they the future of this planet?
I sure hope not.
Simply put… Matt Cohen and Jesse Rivers are “Bagged and Boarded”.
Bagged & Boarded #40: A Brief Respite with Derrick Comedy - In which Matt sits down with DC Pierson and Meggie McFadden of Derrick Comedy and is enthralled by tales of all things sketch comedy, youtube superstardom, pun construction and their new hilarious feature film, Mystery Team! “G-rated characters in an R-rated world” The troupe behind ‘Mystery Team‘ tell the story about who they are and what this movie is all about in an interview from Comic-Con. In brief, it’s a story of former Encyclopedia Brown-style kid detectives who struggle for relevancy as they mature into adulthood … and wild hi-jinks ensue.
In the clip, Director Dan Eckman, Producer Meggie McFadden and the three lead actors Donald Glover, D.C. Pierson, Dominic Dierkes, talk about coming up with the story and characters, working on a small budget and the Twilight panel.
Mystery Team Synopsis At age seven, Oakdale’s Mystery Team was a band of kid detectives dedicated to solving child-sized mysteries (like who put their finger in the pie, and who stole the tricycle), and the town loved them for it. Now they’re eighteen years old, about to graduate from high school, yet they’re...

The Derrick Comedy group, aka the folks behind the movie Mystery Team, did a killer panel at recently Comic Con. One of the highlights was a new Mystery Team short called The Case of the Haunted Hotel, which showed just how the comedy group packs some really sick jokes into an unsettlingly friendly atmosphere. Now the short is online to help promote the roadshow rollout of the feature prior to its nationwide opening in October. The excellent short is after the break. Seeing this short with an audience would be the ideal experience, but I think you'll get the idea even watching alone. Director Dan Eckman, producer Meggie McFadden and writer/performers D.C. Pierson, Don Glover and Dominic Dierkes manage to combine a genuine childlike worldview with some really awful adult experience, and it's a potent piece of comedy. And if you live in Austin you can see them perform...
