Da’Vine Joy Randolph is now an Oscar winner.
By Sunday night, this result was mostly a foregone conclusion, as she had already swept best supporting actress at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Independent Spirit, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards this season for her performance in Alexander Payne’s throwback dramedy The Holdovers. Randolph played cafeteria manager Mary, one of the trio of protagonists left at the boarding school over holiday break, grieving the death of her son.
“Your performance is tribute to those who have helped others heal in spite of their own pain,” said presenter Lupita Nyong’o, the past Oscar winner selected to introduce Randolph.
Randolph is now the first of nine Oscar-nominated performers directed by Payne to go all the way. (The second could be Paul Giamatti, whose best actor category is still to be announced as of press time.)

Having recently wrapped shooting in upstate New York, the producers of Jamie Sisley’s debut feature “Stay Awake,” a dramatic family comedy about opioid addiction, have revealed key cast details.
In the film, Emmy and two-time Golden Globe Award Nominee Chrissy Metz (“This is Us”) plays Michelle, a loving and well-meaning mother of two whose struggle with prescription drug addiction is adversely affecting her entire family. Set in a small community in Virginia, “Stay Awake” confronts a serious and common problem facing many rural families across the country without dwelling explicitly on the negatives, instead choosing to address them with a very human mix of humor and levity.

I thought Miles Teller had a future when I saw his touching performance in 2010 drama "Rabbit Hole" at age 22. I figured he had a career when I saw him carry the lead opposite Shailene Woodley in Sundance romance "The Spectacular Now." He is now a rising star who holds his own in Sundance prize winner "Whiplash," which Sony Pictures Classics, gunning for awards glory, releases on October 10. This serious actor is only 27, so there's a lot more to look forward to. His CAA agent Tracy Brennan, who also reps Aaron Eckhart, was so impressed by Teller on the set of "Rabbit Hole," his first feature, that she immediately signed him. He grew up in a family of music lovers and plays piano, guitar, saxophone and rock drums, and discovered acting in high school and went on to study theater at Nyu. So he had some musical training going into "Whiplash,...

I figured he had a career when I saw him carry the lead opposite Shailene Woodley in Sundance romance "The Spectacular Now." And a year later, he's a rising star when I saw him hold his own opposite the mighty J.K. Simmons in Sundance opening night hit "Whiplash," which will be released by Sony on October 10. "Whiplash" has wowed Sundance and Cannes, and it will wow Toronto this Fall before rousing theatergoers. As for its awards chances, this crowdpleaser will cause a stir in the Fall. Teller's not a top-bill name, but his forthcoming projects -- which he discusses below in our Sundance video interview -- suggest he's getting there. Miles Teller is attached to a film that is being sold in Berlin that veers close to his own experience. In true story "Bleed for This," to be written and directed by "Boiler Room"'s Ben Younger and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Teller would play young boxer Vinny Panzienza, who has to recover from a terrible automobile accident. He is told he will never walk again, but fights his way back into the ring a year later with the help of trainer Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart). As a teenager Teller was thrown out of a moving car and was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries; he still wears the scars on his face. (See my "Whiplash" interview here.) Teller, who is on a roll, with back-to-back Sundance hits "Spectacular Now" and "Whiplash" and "Divergent" coming up, worked with Eckhart on 2010 drama "Rabbit Hole," Teller's first feature. (Freelancer Sharon Swart is helping Deadline’s Sundance coverage) Director Drake Doremus and producer Jonathan Schwartz are in Park City with a film for the third year in a row. Their latest, Like Crazy is a trans-Atlantic love story starring Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, and Sundance 2010 breakout Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) and is one of the fest’s most anticipated films and screens today at noon at the large Eccles theater. Last year, the duo had Douchebag in Dramatic Competition at Sundance; the year before, Spooner at Slamdance. At their cast and crew dinner last night, the filmmakers had a quick visit from Harvey Weinstein, who is famous for showing early support and passion for a potential acquisition. The dinner was filled with CAA agents who helped cast the film, including Tracy Brennan who reps both Jones and Lawrence, as well as Charlie Bewley (Twilight) who has a small role.
