In 1994, a documentary called Hoop Dreams set the standard by which almost all sports related documentaries set in High School. The way Steve James captured the hopes of student athletes who saw basketball as a way out of their poverty stricken existence was uncanny. Now, this week brings another doc that can boast the same thing. It’s Wrestle, a look a the same sort of teenager. Athletics play a prominent role here, but as much as anything it’s a depiction of low income life in the American south. This world often seems forgotten, but this movie shines a fascinating light on it all. The film is a documentary about a High School wrestling team, as well as the poverty that surrounds them. Set in Huntsville, Alabama, it follows a group of students at J.O. Johnson High School who see potentially their only hope for the future resting...

A smaller-scaled examination of sportive influence on already-hard-knocked young lives in the mode of “Hoop Dreams” and “Friday Night Lives,” “Wrestle” trains its gaze on an underdog high school’s grappling team over one eventful season’s course. Suzannah Herbert and co-director Lauren Belfer’s documentary spends at least as much time on the protagonists’ stormy personal lives as it does on their athletic training and competition. Their disparate struggles remind that the “land of opportunity” is no level playing field: Those from broken homes and poorer communities with underfunded educational systems face a much steeper climb than the more fortunate. This engrossing snapshot has a good shot at exposure beyond the festival circuit, with public television being a logical destination.

Outspoken filmmaker Michael Moore is recovering from a days-long stay in the ICU after being diagnosed with pneumonia, even though "things didn't look good" soon after he was admitted. Moore revealed his health struggles, which led to the cancellation of multiple planned public appearances, in a pair of Facebook updates published Friday. Stars: Lisa Vidal, David Chisum, Joshua Pelegrin, Lupe Ontiveros, Christine Lakin | Written by Matthew Reynolds, Pablo Proenza | Directed by Pablo Proenza
Originality in horror can be hard to come by; a lot has been done before so it’s hard to come up with new things. Sometimes though there are ways to manipulate reality in ways and add extra dimensions that create a whole new world where anything can happen. This is something that Dark Mirror tries to do.
Deborah Martin is a photographer who moves into a house with her family. The house used to be the home of an enigmatic artist who disappeared with his wife; local legend says before he disappeared he may have in fact killed his wife. Originally unleashed back in 2007, “Dark Mirror” is a low key psychodrama horror, which now makes a belated arrival on UK region 2 DVD via Arrow Films. The film was directed by Pablo Proenza, who worked as an editor on the Michael Moore documentary “Capitalism: A Love Story”, and stars in the lead “E.R.” actress Lisa Vidal, along with television actor David Chisum, Christine Lakin (who some may remember from way back when in the television series “Step by Step”) and Joshua Pelegrin. Vidal plays Debbie, a woman who relocates from Seattle to Southern California with her husband Jim (David Chisum) and young son Ian (Joshua Pelegrin), moving into a house with mesmerising stained glass windows. A photographer looking for work, Debbie snaps herself looking in the bathroom mirror, with the window in the background, and experiences an oddly hallucinatory effect, after which she starts seeing strange visions of a hooded figure.

The aliens from Sony's "District 9" scored big during The Hollywood Reporter's 39th annual Key Art Awards.
Honoring the best in movie marketing, Friday's event at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles saw "District 9" take home 11 awards, including the best-in-show prize for its integrating marketing campaigning as well as three other best-in-show laurels for its outdoor advertising (built around its "Bus Stop for Humans Bus Shelter"), TV spots and digital campaign.
The awards ceremony culminated with Sylvester Stallone receiving the Visionary Award, given annually to a filmmaker who inspires movie marketers.
"At the end of the day, there is no question that Sylvester Stallone delivers great product," THR publisher Lori Burgess said before calling Stallone to the candlelit stage at what once was the altar of the former St. Vibiana Roman Catholic cathedral, which has been converted to a party space. "He's put his stamp on film like very few people of his generation.

Fangoria/Matt Molgaard: For those who haven’t seen the film; how would you describe Dark Mirror?
Lisa Vidal: I kind of see it as a psychological thriller, and I really see a real story. That’s why I loved the script when I read it. It had a real story in dealing with real issues. So you know, I just see it as this real story that turns into a rollercoaster ride,...

An independent film from writer and director Pablo Proenza "Dark Mirror," is a light horror outing from first time production company Cut Glass Productions. Released in a limited fashion the film now finds itself with IFC Films Video on Demand feature. Offering the deconstruction of housewife Deborah (Lisa Vidal) at the hands of vengeful spirits "Dark Mirror," gently slaps the viewership to attention with a psychological journey through paranoid delusion and altered perspectives.
Conflicted housewife and aspiring careerist Deborah entertains thoughts of hidden doorways to further dimensions while emotionally breaking down in front of her young son and husband. Looking through glass skews the central character's look on reality while a mythos involving trapped spirits is offered with half-confidence. Adding murder, and suicide with psychological twists the reality is left to the viewer. Is Deborah paranoid or the victim of spiritual possession?...

Pablo Proenza’s Dark Mirror is a film that will feel rather familiar to genre fans; its central elements have been used often in horror history. But when done right, there’s nothing wrong with exploring concepts we all know and love, especially when they’re executed with an excellent actress and an all-around talented crew.
Scripted by Proenza and Matthew Reynolds, Dark Mirror (which debuted this week as an IFC Films video-on-demand title) follows Deborah Martin (Lisa Vidal), an out-of-work photographer and mother who moves with her family into a new home in sunny California. She has rejected a large number of houses that her husband Jim (David Chisum) has taken her to see, but this one prompts her to impulsively agree. The place proves, however, to have a dark past that begins to exert a sinister hold over Deborah and her perceptions. The goings-on appear connected with its glass and mirrors,...

I would like to thank first time director Mr. Proenza, from the bottom of my heart, for the scene in which the incredibly tasty Tammy (Christine Lakin) stands in her bikini, holding a pistol in her hand, and play acts a heist: cheers mate, here’s to you, won't forget it. Beyond that, and except for an excellent last 15 minutes, Dark Mirror is an unoriginal and not at all scary supernatural suspense involving:

2. An evil presence behind the aforesaid mirrors.
3. A newly moved in family, only one of whom sees the spooky stuff.

Whether you're tired of people texting during the movie, want to relax on your couch or have a fear of catching swine flu, there's plenty of entertainment options that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home this summer, whether it's On Demand, Online, or On DVD. A helpful guide is below, and don't forget our look at the indie films that are hitting theaters this summer.

Our sister company IFC Films will have quite the busy summer, providing at least one film a week to watch on demand and nowhere else. The company's Festival Direct summer schedule recently kicked off with the Robert Pattinson teen drama "How to Be," and will be followed on May 6th by the premieres of Pablo Proenza's haunted house thriller "Dark Mirror" and the Patrick Wilson-Amy Smart romantic dramedy "Life In Flight," which premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival.

The director just gave us a heads up that there's a new trailer available for this indie and it looks even better then the last footage we saw. As we reported on the teaser before, not only has IFC picked this little diddy up, but Variety called it a "tour de force". Why? I don't know yet, but here at the Quiet Earth offices we've already got a screener so we'll be bringing you a review soon. Long live indie film!

Don't worry. This has nothing to do with Keifer Sutherland, folks. Instead, reflect on the trailer, one sheet and official website for director Pablo Proenza's Dark Mirror. As you may have guessed, the film is about a mirror with a reflection that holds an alternate reality and when discovered by a photographer (Lisa Vidal) things get pretty unmanageable. Check out the trailer, one sheet and the website and you tell us: Is it too little too late after Alexandre Aja's Mirrors? Or would you like to take another look?...

What is it about mirrors that inspire so much fright? I'm not talking about seeing your reflection for the first time each day after waking up with a hangover and a bag of Cheetos stuck to your chin by dried saliva either. I'm talking evil things lurking behind it, man!
Director Pablo Proenza has some serious malevolence in mind for his new film Dark Mirror, and as a result the official one sheet for the movie went live on the official Dark Mirror website. Dig on it and the trailer below.
Dark Mirror tells the tale of a photographer (Lisa Vidal) who moves her family into a strange old house, where she discovers an alternate reality reflected in the glass ... A dark reality that is closing in on her.
