ESPN has been called out by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences after it was revealed that the network was caught breaking rules to win Emmy Awards for its on-air talent.
A bombshell report by The Athletic revealed that the network had “inserted fake names in Emmy categories,” most notably for their successful College GameDay show, to secure wins for the on-air talent who would have otherwise been ineligible for show-specific awards.
In an attempt to prevent “double-dipping,” members of the cast were only eligible for personal awards. As a result of the deception, ESPN’s talent received more than 30 awards.
The network issued a response to the investigation that took place once the scheme was discovered.

You would think that Manu tribe member Wendy Diaz had enough to worry about after she injured her ankle last week during a reward challenge on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” But she was more concerned about the fate of the reward – namely a clutch of chickens. But while Dan “The Wardog” DaSilva was practically smacking his lips at the prospect that meat might be in reach, Wendy was plotting to save the poultry’s necks. “The players signed up for this game, not the chickens, so why should they be penalized,” Wendy explained, which is a bit odd since she is neither a vegetarian nor a vegan and normally eats chicken back home. We must invoke another bird — cuckoo!

Hundreds of women have played the game of “Survivor,” but who are the most drop-dead gorgeous of all time? We’ve narrowed down the list to the Top 20 sexiest females ever, so click through our photo gallery above to see our complete rankings, worst to best. As always, be sure to sound off down in the comments section to let us know whether you agree or disagree with our picks.
20. Jenn Brown (Worlds Apart) — Jenn is almost like too cool to actually make our list, but her laissez faire attitude to playing the game is what makes her so attractive in the first place.
19. Amber Brkich — Amber was the All-Stars champion that no one saw coming because of her stealthy play and ability to wrap one of the game’s most notorious men around her finger. Though not exactly a black widow, her cunning and competitive nature increase her allure.

Survivor is one of those shows that rises and falls on its casting. When the contestants are interesting, we get a stellar season like last spring's Survivor: Cagayan. If the cast is bland, we get a mediocre season like last fall's Survivor: San Juan Del Sur. (Don't take our word for it; even host Jeff Probst called it a "frustrating" season.) But Survivor is shockingly resilient. Now entering its 30th season, it has been around so long that this season's youngest contestant was in the first grade when the show premiered. She's now 22. On Monday, Jan. 13, NBC's obstacle-course competition series "American Ninja Warrior" presents a two-hour special, "USA vs. Japan," in which five top competitors from "Ninja" go up against five competitors from the Japanese show that inspired it, "Sasuke."
While Japanese competitors have finished the final course at the original Mt. Midoriyama, America's contenders have so far failed to take it all on the Las Vegas version of the giant course. Now, the Americans and the Japanese, rather than tackling the course on their own with only the clock ad direct competition, will now go head-to head.
Competing for America are Brian Arnold (who went out on stage three in Las Vegas), Paul Kasemir, James McGrath, Travis Rosen and Brent Steffenson. Up for Japan are Kazuma Asa, Hitoshi Kanno, Ryo Matachi, Shingo Yamamoto and two-time champion Yuji Urushihara.

G4 may have transformed itself into Esquire Network, but some things are staying the same — like the cable network’s obstacle course competition series American Ninja Warrior airing in a shared window with sibling NBC. The show will air weekly on Esquire and then NBC on consecutive days, with original episodes on each network. Former NFL player and sports analyst Akbar Gbaja Biamila (NFL Network) will join the show as host alongside Matt Iseman, who is returning to the show for its fifth season on Esquire and its second full season on NBC. Jenn Brown and I often say we could write volumes on two topics: How to have the best film-festival experience, and how filmmakers can effectively promote their films. However, we're looking at these topics from the point of view of the press and people who like to watch movies. We're not filmmakers, so we can't speak from that point of view about film festivals.
Fortunately, Austin Film Society has a Moviemaker Dialogue next week just for filmmakers, in which a panel of experienced local writers/directors will offer their advice about how you can get the most out of a film festival, whether your film is screening at that fest or not. The "Maximizing Your Film Festival Experience" panel is moderated by me, and includes Kat Candler, Clay Liford, and Geoff Marslett. (That's Candler and Liford in the above photo.)

Although out-of-town Austin Film Festival attendees may have had a difficult time attending movie premieres and screenings at the Regal Arbor in north Austin, this local doesn't mind the change of pace. With changes in the parking fees downtown and traffic congestion, I enjoy the alternate venues -- especially since the Arbor is close to home for me.
One of the Aff selections I saw at the Arbor this year was Deep in the Heart, a feature making its world premiere in the fest's Texas Independents category. Starring local festival alum Jon Gries (Natural Selection, Napoleon Dynamite) as Texan Dick Wallrath, this docudrama focuses on a man who went from a deadbeat alcoholic to a self-made millionaire and philanthropist. Wallrath is known for his generosity via the Future Farmers of America (Ffa) and 4-h programs that helps fund college educations for students from rural communities. The movie was shot in the greater Austin area.

Johnson and a celebration of the music he and his students created. Between 1968 and 1977, the Kashmere High School in Houston's 5th Ward had a stage band performing music that put professionals to shame.” The film “?offers a heaping helping of uplift while documenting the past...

Here's the latest Austin film news.
The SXSW Panel Picker is now open for voting. You can give a thumbs-up on any panel suggestions you'd like to see at the SXSW Film Festival next March. A number of the 177 SXSW Film proposals are from Austin folks or feature Austinites in the panel. Of course I'll naturally suggest you take a look at Jenn Brown's panel proposal: "Removing Barriers Between Press, PR and Producers" (and vote for it!). If you'd like to promote a panel, feel free to do so in the comments. In case you hadn't noticed, aGLIFF has been slowly releasing their 2011 film festival lineup, with lots of posters and previews available through their Facebook page. We'll have more details on the lineup soon, but in the meantime check out their full schedule. The fest takes place from Sept. 6-11 this year at three venues: Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar,...

In celebration of Slacker's 20th anniversary, local filmmakers are re-creating scenes from the Richard Linklater movie for Slacker 2011, a fundraising project benefitting the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund (Tfpf). As we await the August 31 premiere, we're chatting with some of the filmmakers participating in one or more of the short films that will comprise the project -- check out our interviews so far.
Today's interview is with local filmmaker and instructor Geoff Marslett. Marslett's feature Mars premiered at SXSW 2010 (Jenn Brown's review). Mars is an animated movie based on a live-action green-screen shoot that took two years of hard work to animate. Marslett is currently working on a new feature ... well, I'll let him tell you about it in the following discussion.
Slackerwood: Which scene from the film did you reshoot?
Geoff Marslett: I was responsible for scene 16. This was basically the robber's getaway after he steals a book from the anarchist,...

This year, Slackerwood teamed up with SXSW to create a printed version of our SXSW Dining Guide. You should be able to find it at any film venue. Here's the online version, in case paper is just too low-tech for you. The restaurants, cafes and food trailers in this guide are nearly all in walking distance of a SXSW theater. Of course we missed a lot of good stuff. Feel free to make your own recommendations in the comments.
A couple of updates since we wrote the printed guide: Taco Journalism has an excellent SXSW guide to convenient and/or delicious tacos in the downtown area. The Austin American-Statesman has a list of restaurants that have opened downtown since SXSW 2010. We also suggest you search #sxswfood on Twitter for the latest on food trailer locations and special SXSW deals.

SXSW Film Festival has just announced its 2011 lineup. We'll post a complete (we hope) list of all the Austin and Texas connections very soon, but in the meantime, you can read the full announcement here. The short films, midnight movies and SXFantastic films will be revealed next week, and the full panel/conference lineup on Feb. 15. SXSW Film Festival takes place from March 11-19 this year.
Immediately obvious Austin films: Heather Courtney's Where Soldiers Come From, in the documentary competition; Aaron Burns' blacktino, produced by Elizabeth Avellan and with a cast including Danny Trejo and Jeff Fahey; Turk Pipkin's latest film Building Hope; Steve Mims' documentary Incendiary: The Willingham Case; and hey! Emily Hagins' My Sucky Teen Romance. Quite pleased to see Clay Liford's feature Wuss included too, since Jenn Brown just interviewed him; look for us to publish that very soon.

Fishmonger by day, blues musician by night. Entrepreneur turned astronaut. Notoriously foul-mouthed potential Winnebago salesman in retirement. Loser taking a shower at the Genie Car Wash. Another loser trying to learn to harmonize musically and socially. A third loser who may have found the woman that will help him get over his ex-wife ... but has to deal with her horrible son. Poet with a dream of selling vegetarian sandwiches. The most stubborn, determined 14-year-old girl in the history of American film. A soldier returning from Iraq to West Texas. A machete-wielding ex-Federale fighting bigotry and seeking revenge. A man, a woman, a goat, and a dream of superb cheese.
Austin films don't fall into a predictable genre or pattern, whether they're indies that were shot locally on a shoestring or Hollywood films that happened to be shooting here in town. Amid the banquet of Austin and Central Texas-connected movies that...

If you missed my Fantastic Fest 2010 Guide: How to Drink Like an Austinite, than you might not know that I'm a craft beer enthusiast. I am also a member of Black Star Co-op, the world's first cooperatively owned and worker managed brewpub. I stopped by the pub this week to try out featured beers from Jester King, a new brewery located between Oak Hill and Dripping Springs.
A fellow member at the bar struck up a conversation about our agreed-upon favorite -- the Wychmaker Rye Pale Ale -- and told me he was one of the earliest members of the co-op. With almost 2,500 members, being one of the early charter members is pretty impressive. However, he said that he's been so busy working and promoting a movie that he'd not been able to visit the newly opened pub until now. Of course I had to ask about his film -- an animated romantic comedy.

It's been an unusually exciting afternoon here at Slackerwood headquarters, and no, it's not because the Saints won. Austin Film Festival has announced its Centerpiece film for 2010 as well as a Tbd selection that I have been waiting to see for months and months and some other additions/changes to the schedule.
The Company Men will be Aff's Centerpiece film, screening on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6 pm at the Paramount. Writer/director John Wells will attend. He's currently the president of WGA West, and after the movie, former WGA West President Dan Petrie, Jr. will moderate a Q&A with Wells. The Company Men is about three guys working for a company that's seriously downsizing, and the cast is truly stellar: Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner.
Another new title announced for the festival is Frederick Wiseman's documentary Boxing Gym, which premiered at Cannes this year.

Country music singer Kenny Chesney appears to have moved on from his romance with girlfriend Amy Colley after he was photographed getting close to another woman during a romantic beach getaway. Chesney confessed his relationship with the Tennessee nurse was in trouble in a recent interview, revealing he and Colley had been "on-again, off-again" for some time.
And now the "How Forever Feels" hitmaker appears to have moved into the arms of Espn network sportscaster Jenn Brown. Photos published in U.S. magazine Star show the pair romantically embracing on a Cancun, Mexico beach, where they reportedly escaped for a five-day break earlier this month.
Chesney's love life first hit the headlines in May 2005 when he exchanged vows with actress Renee Zellweger. The marriage was short lived the "Bridget Jones's Diary" star annulled the union just months later, citing fraud.
The controversy didn't put Chesney off marriage and now fans...

You all know what I mean when I say "Fantastic" news tidbits, right? Fantastic Fest is in September and we should be receiving -- and publishing -- regular updates on the lineup, special guests, and whatever other treats the festival has in store for us this year. But there's some other Austin film news, too, so I thought I'd take the lazy way out -- er, I mean the convenient way for readers, that's it -- and combine it all into one nice newsy package.
As I mentioned, Fantastic Fest announced 13 films in their 2010 festival lineup yesterday. If you are a Fantastic Fest fanatic, you probably already know this. I noticed people on Twitter exclaiming that they'd been constantly refreshing the festival website page while eagerly anticipating the news. Nearly all these films are from other countries: Sweden, France, Serbia, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong and Japan. I don't know...

It is the kind of week already where I had to go find a calendar so I could put the correct date in the headline. So it seems like a good time to catch up on Austin film news, and refresh my memory about a few recent items. Here's what we've got:
News 8 Austin broadcast a great story last week on the locally founded American Genre Film Archive, which is working to protect and restore exploitation, horror and action films. Be sure to watch the video. The Least of These, which Jenn Brown and I both enjoyed at SXSW 2009, is now available on DVD through IndiePix. This documentary focuses on Texas detention centers for families who are believed to have entered this country illegally. It's an eye-opener, and just writing about this makes me wonder if the conditions have changed at all in the past year. I hope so.The...

Jenn Brown and I caught the premiere of locally made film The Happy Poet at SXSW this year, and had a great time. It's a charming low-key comedy about a guy who decides to open a food cart at Auditorium Shores that will sell vegetarian and organic sandwiches and treats. He's battling a limited budget, a hot-dog-loving clientele and a delivery man with occasional shady habits. Writer-director Paul Gordon also plays the lead character, and the cast includes Chris Doubek, Liz Fisher and Jonny Mars. Read Jenn's review for more details.
The Happy Poet is scheduled to play in New York in late June, and Gordon and his producers are in need of some travel funds so they can attend their own NYC premiere (at Rooftop Films Summer Series,...

Last week I took a tour of the new Gold Class Cinemas, a movie theater in The Domain that officially opens this weekend. In addition, Jenn Brown and I went back to the theater this week for "mock service" -- as part of the process for training the theater staff, we watched Shutter Island (it actually improves on a second viewing) and ordered some of the menu items the theater offers.
Like the Alamo Drafthouse chain, Gold Class does have a menu -- it also has a full bar. In fact, it's an especially nice bar that could have fit perfectly in The Domain as a stand-alone. But Gold Class strikes me as unlikely to compete directly with Alamo, as it is a very different experience.
First of all, the point that everyone is discussing: the tickets for Gold Class are pricey. A full-price ticket costs $29, and no, that doesn't include any food or drinks.

On Saturday, Jenn Brown and I headed out to the wilds of Round Rock -- or at least the former wilds -- to see local author Alison Macor discuss her new book, Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids. I noted on the drive out there that the La Frontera strip mall, where the Barnes and Noble was located, had been little more than woods back in the 1970s and is allegedly where part of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was shot. So if you think about it, it was an ideal location for the event.
Author and freelance film writer Joe O'Connell led a discussion with Macor about a wide range of local film-related topics. Appropriately, they started with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, then worked their way over to Slacker, The Whole Shootin' Match, the numerous interviews Macor held as part of her extensive research for the book, the publishing process with Ut Press,...

Sometimes the best photo opportunities have nothing to do with red carpets. The Austin-shot film The Happy Poet had its world premiere in the small theater at Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz during SXSW this year, and the only red carpet might have been a patch in the lobby where someone spilled a Red Bull. Still, if you wanted to meet Austin filmmakers and actors -- and snap a few photos -- this was the place to be early on Sunday afternoon.
Everyone clustered around the little food cart (pictured at right) in front of the Ritz, just like the one in The Happy Poet, but unfortunately with no sandwiches. You could get one of the healthy snacks, however, if you signed up for the film's mailing list. The only problem was that the light was terrible for photography -- it was very sunny and everyone stood in the shade.

On Sunday, cast and crew of Simon Rumley's latest film, Red White and Blue, slipped away from SXSW to another theater for a private screening before the official world premiere of the film. The events reunited the entire cast and crew for a special celebration and viewing of the final cut of the film. The theater was eerily quiet as everyone focused on the dark and gruesome sequence of events unfolding on the screen. Actors Noah Taylor, Marc Senter and Nick Ashy Holden (pictured above) were all sitting together. As a filming location for last summer's shoot, I enjoyed recognizing my house in several scenes. Just look for the Fantastic Fest poster in the film and you will understand why I have trouble leaving the curtains open at night.

It was just yesterday that Jenn Brown and I were plotting our SXSW coverage strategy for Slackerwood (and other outlets) and hoping B-Side would host a Festival Genius site for scheduling SXSW Film. All of us at Slackerwood who have covered film festivals have loved the scheduling application from B-Side and found that it made fest planning vastly easier.
So we were very sad to learn that Austin-based B-Side Entertainment will be closing its doors this week. Filmmaker Magazine's blog is reporting that the company has been unable to find new investors and is out of funds. B-Side employees have all been laid off, many of which we've become familiar with at local film festivals -- including occasional Slackerwood contributor Chris Holland -- and we are obviously personally unhappy about the news as well. Back at SXSW 2007, I interviewed B-Side founder Chris Hyams (pictured at right) for Studio Sx (sadly,...

SXSW Film has just announced its 2010 opening-night film: Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. The movie had a sneak preview at Butt-Numb-a-Thon in Austin in December. Jenn Brown described it as "far and away the crowd pleaser of Bnat." It's interesting to note that the SXSW 2009 opening-night film, I Love You, Man, had previewed at Bnat in 2008.
SXSW also released several other titles that will play the film festival from March 12-21 this year, and I've listed them after the jump. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Aaron Katz's next film, Cold Weather. But first, here's Jenn's mini-review of Kick-Ass from her Bnat article:
"It's a great non-superhero hero movie, with an average teen (Aaron Johnson) suddenly becoming a vigilante, only to find he's not the only one out there. Christopher Mintz-Plasse has a great non-McLovin type role that still has his dorky charm signature as the son of a gangster.

The latest comedy from Austin filmmaker Mike Judge, Extract, is out on DVD today. Just in time for Christmas, you can sit with your family and watch a movie about insurance fraud, adultery, sexy con artists, dopey gigolos, drug-pushing bartenders ... hmm, I may have to get my hands on a copy. As you can see from my review, I got a kick out of the movie, although it may not be as repeatedly watchable as Office Space or Idiocracy. Jenn Brown also reviewed the film.
The DVD release gives me an excuse to share a few more photos from the local Extract premiere at the Paramount in August. As I noted in my article, everyone was sweating like crazy, although you're supposed to call it "glow" when actors do it. Still, the folks on the red carpet that evening were good-natured about it. This year's closing-night film at Austin Film Festival was Up in the Air, the latest from director Jason Reitman (Thank You for Smoking, Juno). Up in the Air, which hits Austin theaters on Friday, stars George Clooney as a guy who's continually traveling for his job -- firing people -- from city to city around the country. He mentors young Anna Kendrick, and also has some entanglements with another frequent traveler, played by Vera Farmiga. It's a very entertaining movie -- and just received six Golden Globe nominations, as well as winning various critics groups' awards -- but I'll let Jenn Brown tell you all about it when her review appears on Slackerwood in the next day or two.
