There are three states of being. Awake. Asleep. And somewhere in between. Arriving in theaters and on VOD this Friday is Clive Tonge’s Mara, a supernatural thriller centered on a paranormal entity of the same name who strikes her victims by utilizing sleep paralysis as a weapon.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Botet about his creative process on Mara, how he approaches collaborating with filmmakers on bringing their visions to life, and he even discussed the freedom he experienced recently on Two Pigeons (aka Freehold), in which he plays a stowaway living inside a guy’s apartment and takes full advantage of his stealthy status, as the makeup-free experience allowed him to really let loose.
So great to speak with you, Javier. In terms of Mara, and maybe this applies to other movies as well, but when you're coming on to do a character like this, what is your process as an actor? Do you work out the physicality before the makeup process,...

Olga Kurylenko's name may have just entered the rumor mill in relation to possibly joining “Batman vs. Superman” as Wonder Woman, but as a batch of recent casting news shows, the “To The Wonder” actress will have a bout of horror first. While the star from “We're The Millers” aims to don a costume instead, “Catwoman” director Pitof re-emerges with his next project, and John Cusack plans to hire a getaway driver. Kurylenko has been announced (via Dread Central) to star in the supernatural horror film “Mara”, which will mark music video director Clive Tonge's feature-length debut. Focusing on the mythology surrounding sleep paralysis, the film follows a criminal psychologist (Kurylenko) who investigates the murder of a man, apparently by his wife, and instead finds herself within the legend of a demon that kills people in their sleep. With three films in post-production and two more (including Russell Crowe's The Water Diviner) on the way, these are busy times for Olga Kurylenko. She's managed to squeeze in one more project, however, in the form of Mara, a supernatural horror thriller from debut director Clive Tonge. Jonathan Frank (The Tournament) wrote the screenplay.Mara's high concept is centred on sleep paralysis and Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome. Kurylenko plays criminal psychologist Kate Fuller, assigned to look into an apparent murder in which the victim seems to have been killed in his sleep by his wife. The only witness is eight-year-old Sophie. But Fuller's investigations lead to the legend of an ancient folk demon, and gaining its attention leads Fuller to experience similar ordeals to previous victims as she struggles to escape the curse. So what's Mara? We're guessing the demon, which takes various forms in various cultures.
