I do love a director with a steady hand! So many out there would be worried about a slow-burn thriller/espionage film not keeping people’s attention (I mean to be fair everyone seems to have a two-second attention span these days) so they might throw in some unneeded action or other random nuttiness. Micheal Winnick though realises that he has a strong cast that can deliver in every area and one hell of a sharp vibrant and sexy aesthetic.
Dark Asset‘s strongest… umm… asset is that it knows exactly what it is, and what it wants to be and co-writer/director Micheal Winnick has assembled a crew that holds the line to bring us the perfect example of a low...

This film can’t decide if it’s an action thriller or a steamy character study, as a soldier with an enhanced-abilities chip chats up a woman in a bar
John Wick has probably created unrealistic expectations for the adrenaline levels to be encountered in luxury hospitality venues, and this low-budget super-soldier thriller, largely narrated over cocktails in a swanky hotel lobby, follows firmly in its gold-card wake. But the generic and strangely pointless tech conspiracy on offer here supplies as memorable an experience as a branch of the average Hilton. And despite its attempts to juice up its cyborg setup with some old-fashioned body heat, Dark Asset ends up more smarmy than sexy.
Former special forces soldier (Byron Mann) is fitted out with a cybernetic enhancement chip and a John Doe moniker, the latest recruit in an experimental programme. Once the chip has been activated by boffin Dr Cain,...

"Tell me what it felt like... to be famous!" HBO has debuted the full-length trailer for their feature film My Dinner with Hervé, starring the immensely taelnted Peter Dinklage as the famous French dwarf actor Herve Villechaize, who many will recognize from either The Man with the Golden Gun (as Scaramanga's little henchman Nick Nack) or "Fantasy Island" (as Tattoo). The story is about an evening in Los Angeles in which struggling journalist Danny Tate, as played by Jamie Dornan, is sent to meet and interview Herve. This really happened and, as the story goes, it was "an encounter that will have life-changing consequences for both." You can get a glimpse of that in this trailer. The cast includes Andy Garcia, Mireille Enos, Oona Chaplin, Helena Mattsson, and Harriet Walter. This really looks quite good, I'm pretty excited to watch once it's out. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, action cinema was largely defined by a certain level of machismo. The typical action heroes were muscle-bound, seemingly invincible and known for their ability to dispatch one-dimensional villains with an endless supply of cheesy one-liners. The work of Arnold Schwarzenegger perhaps best exemplifies this particular style of filmmaking, but other stars like Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal played in that very same sandbox and became international stars as a result.
Today’s most popular action films have embraced a very different approach, wherein the heroes are far more fallible and human and the violence is more grounded and visceral. Think the Bourne films or Daniel Craig’s James Bond. In recent years, the old-school style of action has largely been relegated to direct-to-dvd projects and nostalgia trips like Stallone’s The Expendables franchise. However, the new Seagal thriller, Code of Honor,...

For additional context, here's the official synopsis: When his family is killed in a drive-by shooting, former special-ops operative Robert Sikes (Steven Seagal, Above the Law) vows to rid his city of every last criminal. With the help of a witness (Helena Mattsson, Iron Man 2), Sikes's former protégé, FBI agent Porter (Craig Sheffer, The Program), tries to find his vigilante friend before the police -- or the maniacal mobster Romano --...

There really are only so many different stories. The trick is to tell one that feels new in more than just the details. Consider the following setup — a criminal trying to go straight is pulled back into the world of violence he so desperately tried to leave behind. We’ve seen it a hundred times before from Les Miserables to Swordfish, but what makes the best examples stand out are the characters and the world around which the story unfolds. Writer/director Daniel Grove‘s feature debut, The Loner, is set in modern day Los Angeles, but it’s an L.A. that feels new and fresh with nearly every frame. Behrouz (Reza Sixo Safai) was a child soldier in Iran during his country’s war with Iraq in the 1980’s, but after escaping the slaughter at the front lines he made his way west to the land of opportunity. What...

While I enjoyed The Loner, I’ll admit that it doesn’t initially have its bearings straight. Writer/Director Daniel Grove opens on an Iranian child being beckoned into martyrdom, but then a tonal shift to 1980s Los Angeles brings about neon-drenched noir settings that some may struggle to interpret. We try to make connections, yet the puzzle is still unclear in its early stages.
Fortunately, as clarity explains itself, a neo-noir-ish, stranger-with-no-name kind of gangster film plays out, exploring an Iranian/Russian underground region of La that few have witnessed (if it even exists?). Patience is certainly a virtue, but you’ll be paid off in time – just don’t jump to any jumbled conclusions too quickly.
Reza Sixo Safai stars as Behrouz, a former Iranian gangster who finds himself being sucked back into a sleazy underworld crime syndicate. His old boss, Cirrus (Parviz Sayyad), accuses him of stealing merchandise,...

Children Shouldn’T Play With Dead Things
• Release Date: Available Now on Blu-ray
• Written By: Alan Ormsby, Bob Clark
• Directed By: Bob Clark
• Starring: Alan Ormsby, Valerie Mamches, Jeff Gillen
First up we have an early effort from comedy maestro Bob Clark (Porky’S, A Christmas Story… Ok, Ok, he die-rected the original Black Christmas and Deathdream too) titled Children Shouldn’T Play With Dead Things. Now, if you are of a certain age, you have doubtless seen this flick and know of its merits (or charming lack thereof), but for the majority of you, this is going to be your first time. So, much like that captain of the football team did on prom night, I’m going to gently ease you through this experience… or fondle you clumsily.
At the insistence of their boorish (that’s really too polite; douche-nozzle would probably be more accurate) stage director,...

How terrifying can a baby really be? Er, pretty bloody terrifying judging by this week's episode of American Horror Story: Hotel...

5.6 Room 33
Lady Gaga's got a thing with her fans. She calls them her little monsters. It's a great fandom nickname, akin to the Kiss Army in terms of recognizability. After all, there's a whole episode of The Simpsons based around Gaga's schtick. It's the worst episode The Simpsons has ever done, but that's not the point. It's a known quantity, and I have no doubt it's been one of the inspirations for Countess's collection of creepy children, alongside The Shining and Village Of The Damned. They're actual little monsters, and she's their mother.
Of course, she's not just their adopted mother, she's the actual mother of at least one child, courtesy of the good butchers at Murder House. That's right, Countess...

Don’t women already have enough to think about in their lives?
Based off the short film “Piece A’ Cake,” “Audrey is a funny female-drive comedy that takes us in real-time over an hour and half of a young woman’s day as she waits and waits and waits in a restaurant for a man to arrive for their critical third date. Forced to face her deepest fears by circumstance — both real and hilariously unreal —Audrey finds the strength and courage she never imagined she had.

We were so disappointed that Zero Hour wasn’t given more time to gain an audience, but at least were pleased when ABC announced that the entire first season would air this summer, including the first three episodes that aired in the winter.
Happily, ABC has now paired those episodes with unaired episodes from another gone-too-soon show from earlier this season, 666 Park Avenue, according to Deadline. As you know from the SciFiMafia.com Spring and Summer Primetime TV Schedule and the SciFiMafia.com Calendar, Zero Hour premieres Saturday, June 15 at 8/7c. 666 Park Avenue will join Zero Hour on June 22, following it at 9/8c and continuing weekly for three more weeks.

"666 Park Avenue" was one of the biggest disappointments of the last TV season - both for viewers story-wise and for ABC ratings-wise. But fans of the show will finally have some closure when the network begins airing the remaining four episodes on Saturday, June 22nd.
Per TVLine the ill-fated spooker, which ABC pulled from the schedule following its December 2, 2012 broadcast, will reward loyal viewers with a finale on July 13. Speaking with the site recently, series star Rachael Taylor gave the final episode two very enthusiastic thumbs up, saying, “I love the ending. Everything gets completely flipped on its head, and it was very fun for me to play. My character is very different in the last episode. I’m really looking forward to people seeing the end, because shit gets crazy.”

To have a Manhattan apartment like those in The Drake just might take a deal with the devil.
The exquisite building on ABC's "666 Park Avenue" is the sort that lines the gracious, monied boulevard. The set, however, is in an industrial strip in Brooklyn on the edge of Williamsburg, the part where hipsters don't yet live.
Here, in an old Schaefer beer factory, the sets still smelled new before Hurricane Sandy. Though production had stopped, as just about everything else did in New York, it was scheduled to resume Tuesday, Nov. 6, despite unspecified damage to the set.
The art deco lobby to the fictional building, which certainly seems to be a portal to hell on the show, is sweeping and elegant, with mirrored tables and the sort of polished black and white floors that Fred Astaire would glide across.
When the action switches to the basement, the show moves to a church in Harlem.

Despite the show's recent cancellation, fans of "666 Park Avenue" should still receive some closure when the series ends its run on ABC as executive producers David Wilcox and Matt Miller promise they are "building to a powerful and surprising series finale."
Wilcox and Miller told TVLine they were given enough time to turn their swan song into a series finale, adding, "We hope fans of the show continue watching all the way to the end of Jane and Henry’s incredible journey to the dark side... where all your questions will be answered.”
As luck would have it, DVR data released last week showed the ratings for the thriller’s November 4 episode spiking a staggering 77 percent — raising hopes that ABC might un-ring the cancellation bell. To little surprise, ABC has cancelled 666 Park Avenue, their struggling Sunday night series. While the network will air all 13 episodes, there won't be any after that. In addition, ABC also cancelled Last Resort today and CBS canned Partners.
666 Park Avenue follows a Midwest couple who've moved to New York City. They end up managing The Drake, a prestigious residential hotel that's not as nice a building as it seems. The TV series features the talents of Terry O'Quinn, Vanessa Williams, Dave Annable, Rachael Taylor, Robert Buckley, Mercedes Masöhn, Helena Mattsson, Samantha Logan, and Erik Palladino.
The show debuted on September 30th, in ABC's troubled Sundays at 10pm timeslot. The premiere's ratings weren't very impressive, attracting a mediocre 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million total viewers. That was 30% lower than what Pan Am had registered a year earlier.

Despite its People's Choice Awards 2013 nomination for "Favorite New TV Drama" and ABC recently ordering a few more scripts for the series, the network officially gave "666 Park Avenue" the axe today.
Per Deadline, the plan seems to be for the series’ original 13-episode order to play out the way things did last season for "Pan Am" with ABC not shutting the door on the show completely, technically keeping it in consideration for next season, although we have to think such a scenario is highly unlikely given the low ratings "666" has received.
In the meantime we'll keep our eyes on the situation and let you know if anything changes.

We've been sporadic at best with our coverage of ABC's "666 Park Avenue," mainly because we didn't think it'd last long given its low ratings. In any event, here's a look at the show's upcoming guest star Whoopi Goldberg in character from Episode 1.09, "Hypnos."

Jane is sent back in time when she is hypnotized by Maris Elder (Whoopi Goldberg); Henry considers running for city council; Sasha's identity is revealed.
Executive producer David Wilcox told TV Guide, Elder is "a mysterious resident of the Drake who helps Jane unlock the secret of the building's true evil origins. Whoopi's an incredible actor so when we heard that she was a horror fan, we wrote the role for her."
“666 Park Avenue” stars Rachael Taylor (“Charlie’s Angels,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” Transformers) as Jane Van Veen, Dave Annable (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Reunion”) as Henry Martin, Robert Buckley (“One Tree Hill,...

ABC gave 666 Park Avenue a lot of promotion leading into the fall season. Has it paid off? Is the new show a ratings success or is it in danger of being cancelled instead?
If you haven't seen it, 666 Park Avenue follows a Midwest couple who've moved to New York City and end up managing The Drake, a prestigious residential hotel. They feel like they're living their dream lives -- until they realize that every dream comes with a price. The TV series features the talents of Terry O'Quinn, Vanessa Williams, Dave Annable, Rachael Taylor, Robert Buckley, Mercedes Masöhn, Helena Mattsson, Samantha Logan, and Erik Palladino.
The show debuted on September 30th, in ABC's troubled Sundays at 10pm timeslot (see: Pan Am, Gcb). The premiere's ratings weren't very impressive, attracting a mediocre 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million total viewers. That...
