It's been nearly two months since Mac Miller's tragic death. On Wednesday, the late rapper's family, fans and fellow stars gathered at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles to honor him with a celebration of life concert. The tribute concert kicked off with a video montage featuring home videos of Miller from his childhood and career. One of his close friends, Dylan Reynolds, then took the stage to perform "Come Back to Earth"—one of Miller's originals. However, he wasn't the only one to perform. Travis Scott, John Mayer, Sza, Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign, Action Bronson, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, ScHoolboy Q, J.I.D, Anderson .Paak,...

How can a film called 4/20 Massacre, billed as "the first stoner slasher film," not be a comedy? Dylan Reynolds' humorless slasher pic follows a quintet of women into the woods and doesn't even wait until sundown to start the carnage, presumably because once people go to bed, the pothead-baiting title will no longer apply. Prospective moviegoers looking to celebrate the unofficial cannabis holiday with an appropriate film should look elsewhere: It's boring enough while sober; only the heroic could stay focused on this film while high.

Not really the stupid stoner humor-dominated horror comedy you might expect, “4/20 Massacre” is a fairly straightforward indie slasher that’s only semi-tongue-in-cheek. Though it can’t claim to be the first such exercise, it does gain novelty value and some specialized appeal from having a mostly lesbian protagonist roll call. Unmemorable but fun as far as it goes, Dylan Reynolds’ very female-driven thriller launches on VOD and DVD April 3, with a single-screen Los Angeles theatrical run starting (of course) 4/20.
From the get-go hewing closely to slasher conventions, sexual orientation aside, Reynolds’ screenplay starts with a couple of gormless rural bros (Mark Schroeder, Drew Talbert) traipsing into a somewhat arid mountain region (the pic was shot in the vicinity of the San Bernardino National Forest, near Los Angeles). They’re certain there’s a hidden illegal pot farm around here somewhere, and their none-too-bright goal is simply to steal some weed from the “criminals.

While the seasons may be changing for the better, there are still plenty of reasons to stay home this April, as there are numerous genre films hitting VOD and digital platforms that are well worth your time. IFC Midnight has a trifecta of cinematic treats planned this month, with Lowlife arriving on April 6th, Wildling coming out on the 13th, and Ghost Stories making its digital debut in the Us on April 20th. For those of you looking to check out Deep Blue Sea 2, the wait is finally over on the 17th, and for those looking to experience some movies with more of a dramatic flavor, both Tilt and the controversial Us and Them hit VOD on April 10th.
Other notable digital releases for April 2018 include Dead on Arrival (4/2), Corbin Nash (4/20), William Friedkin’s exorcism documentary The Devil and Father Amorth (4/24), and Winchester (4/17) for digital platforms, while those hoping...

Title: Nipples & Palm Trees Director: Dylan Reynolds Starring: Matt James, Sadie Katz, Aki Kitamura, Dallas Malloy, Vanessa Rose Parker If a catchy, memorable and/or weirdly evocative title made a film, then surely “Nipples & Palm Trees” would be among the year’s best releases. Unfortunately, there’s plenty of color and sizzle but precious little of substance in this unenlightening tale of a down-and-out Los Angeles artist and his fitful relationship with his muse. Energetically shot enough to qualify as a travelogue curio for hardcore indie fans in search of another City-of-Angels valentine, there’s otherwise little to recommend this low-budget misfire. The film centers on Jackson (screenwriter Matt James), a Venice Beach painter of sexually graphic couplings who suffers the [ Read More ]...

Filmmaker Justin Paul Ritter tipped Fango off that Little *Ucker (pictured), the stoner-goblin flick he produced for FX-artist-turned-director Michael Muscal, is set to have its world premiere this evening at 10 p.m. at La’s 1st Annual Severed Head Film Festival. The event will also showcase Ritter’s anthology chiller A Gothic Tale, which plays Friday, October 31 at 2 p.m. (see the full schedule below).
“To finally have A Gothic Tale and Little *Ucker completed and ready to show people is really exciting,” says Ritter, who previously helmed the indie shocker Katiebird*Certifiable Crazy Person. “These movies were both made to satisfy particular hardcore viewer bases, and we really hope we can create avenues for those people to learn about the movies and see for themselves.
“The pair of screenings at Severed Head is especially meaningful,” Ritter says of the fest, programmed by Dylan Reynolds and taking place at 251 South Main Street in downtown La.
