There are plenty of bit players in Spider-Man: Homecoming whose names will be familiar to comic book fans -- the Tinkerer, the Shocker and could Tiffany Espensen's Cindy eventually be revealed as Cindy Moon aka Silk? One of the most significant inclusions, though, is Aaron Davis (Donald Glover), a low-level criminal who appears only briefly in the movie.
Minor spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
In one of Glover's scenes, Davis is confronted by Spidey (Tom Holland) about black market alien technology being dealt in New York City. Davis offhandedly replies, "I don't want those weapons around. I got a nephew in the neighborhood."

Update: Sony has now released the official cast list for the film, confirming Connelly’s involvement.
Spider-Man: Homecoming has one of the most impressive casts of any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. The credits list is full of exciting names, including Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover and Jon Favreau. And that’s not even mentioning all the young and upcoming stars, like Zendaya, Laura Harrier, Angourie Rice and obviously, Tom Holland. Even in this late stage, however, just two weeks before the movie hits theatres, we might have just found out that another big name is set to appear.
Now that press screenings for Homecoming have begun, more and more details about are starting to leak out and earlier today, some eagle-eyed fans noticed that IMDb now lists Jennifer Connelly as appearing in the film. The movie database credits the actress in the role of ‘Karen/Suit Lady.’
In case you don’t know, IMDb can literally be edited by anyone, so we have to be wary of accepting this at face value. After all, this is the first time we’ve heard of the actress being attached to the production. However, going by the character credit, it sounds like the site’s saying she only has a cameo part in the film. As such, this small a role could possibly have slipped through the net and gone unnoticed by the media.
If this turns out to be true, Homecoming will mark Connelly’s third role in a comic book movie. Back in 1991, she appeared in The Rocketeer as the titular jetpacked hero’s girlfriend Jenny. Then in 2003, she starred as Betty Ross in Ang Lee’s Hulk.
It looks like we’ll have to wait until the film opens to see if this rumour holds any weight, but thankfully, there’s not too much longer to go now, as Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives on July 7th.

Jennifer Connelly has joined the cast of TNT's upcoming series adaptation of Snowpiercer. It's awesome that they managed to land an Oscar-winning actress, who has starred in films such as Dark City, Requiem For a Dream, A Beautiful Mind, Hulk, and she most recently starred in Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel.
The series is based on the French graphic novel called Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette. It was previously adapted into a film by director Bong Joon-ho and it was pretty damn good.
The series is set seven years after an apocalyptic ice age leaves Earth as a frozen wasteland, and the story will focus on the survivors who “inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe.”

Slowly but surely, the wheels are beginning to ache into motion for TNT’s upcoming Snowpiercer pilot.

Scott Derrickson of Doctor Strange will direct the one-hour pilot, with the Oscar-winning Connelly now poised to assume the role of Melanie Cavill, a “First Class passenger who works as the Voice of the Train – responsible for making the daily announcements over its Pa system. Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly is set to star in TNT’s “Snowpiercer” pilot, about a perpetually moving train that circles the globe after the world enters a new ice age. Connelly will play Melanie Cavill, a First Class passenger who makes the daily announcements over the system, known as the Voice of the Train. The “Snowpiercer” story often deals with the subject of class, mainly how the rich passengers at the front of the train don’t pay attention to the working class and poverty-stricken ones in the back. Since DreamWorks Animation got snapped up by Universal, it seems several films have been cancelled. So what's actually happening?
If we imagine that the acquisition of Pixar by Disney was some kind of seismic shift for the Emeryville animation house, then Dreamworks Animation, by comparison, must be living in the red-hot cradle of a hyperactive volcano.
Animated films take so long, from concept to production to release, that recent Dreamworks titles are making their eventual escape from a corporate context which bears little relation to where they were conceived.
The Croods is a particularly good example. It was, originally, going to be a stop-motion film produced at Aardman with a screenplay by John Cleese. Without it ever being cancelled outright, this project continued to evolve, as Dreamworks twisted and turned like a kaleidoscope around it, in to the final product. The plot was different. The characters were different.

Work on Wreck it Ralph 2 is currently at a very advanced storyboarding stage, with directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston in the midst of fixing up, wrecking, then fixing up again their animatic 'story reels,' all on the way to full-steam-ahead CG production. At the same time, recording is underway with the cast, both old and new.
And this is how we've received a first indication that the cast will include Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Barbie in the Toy Story films. She posted a picture to her Instagram that shows her hanging out with Moore and the film's producer (not to mention leading Fix-It Felix lookalike) Clark Spencer.

As Sing arrives in UK cinemas, we chat to its director, Garth Jennings, about lunchbreaks, the movie, and Roald Dahl.
I’m a huge fan of Garth Jennings’ work, from his milk-carton music videos to funny monkey TV ads, and into his feature films, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and Son Of Rambow. It’s been a long time coming but, after five years of work, Jennings’ third feature, Sing, is about to get its UK cinema release. When we caught up to chat last week, we talked about those five long years of hard work, about the projects that didn’t come together beforehand, and just a little of the plans that Jennings has for now. Here’s how our conversation went.

The bracing tension of Rob Connelly’s Edge of Winter hinges on a powerful portrait of a father who compulsively believes his self-worth to be inextricably bound to his sons. As the film unfolds, this man’s expressions of “love” for his children begin to metamorphose in unsettling then monstrous ways, resulting in a descent into madness reminiscent of The Shining in the way the ostensibly unassailable fiber of familial love is threatened by violent insanity in the patriarch. Kubrick’s film found horror in the darkest reaches of the creative mind, but in some ways, the psychological source of terror in Edge of Winter is scarier because it channels the more universally experienced phenomenon of the bond between parent and child. Though fundamentally a beautiful thing, this bond can turn poisonous in cases where parents tie their identities too much to their kids and grow possessive as a result.

A Hard Knock Life: Bettany’s Naive Debut Exudes Good Intentions
Actor Paul Bettany makes his directorial debut with Shelter, meant to be a glimpse into the terrible degradation of the homeless population in New York. Glossy casting and a certain ignorance conveyed in its melodramatic narrative sensationalizes subject matter meant to be sobering, and thus opens up the simple title to all kinds of ironic interpretations of Bettany’s privileged, arguably clueless perspective about a human predicament otherwise passionately presented.
At the end credits, the film is dedicated ‘to the homeless couple who lived outside of my building,’ and there’s something incredibly moving about Bettany’s accomplishment, even if we are aware of a certain naiveté in every single frame and the possibility the director/screenwriter did not engage with his subjects directly for a prolonged period. Bettany uneasily unites sordid realism with tropes we’re accustomed to...

The co-creator of Saw and Insidious chats to us about homages, mistakes, and the Luke/Leia/Vader relationship...
James Wan's longtime collaborator Leigh Whannell was the co-creator and co-writer of the Saw and Insidious series. For the third chapter of Insidious, Whannell has personally picked up the director's megaphone for the very first time.
We met up last week to speak about his newly-forged processes as a writer-director, his ambitions, the lessons he learned from this film, and lots more besides, from Poltergeist to The Shining and, at three separate talking points, the Star Wars saga.
I think would-be filmmakers and students of the medium will find some of his answers particularly intriguing, but be warned, there are spoilers for The Others, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

After the debacle of last week's "1980s" hits, The X Factor is playing a little closer to the rules for Movies Week.
According to the song list from our friends at ITV, all of these songs have been in the films. And they're more or less right.
We still inevitably have a few quibbles. Yes, it's on the soundtrack, but why opt for the Demi Lovato version of 'Let It Go' from Frozen's closing credits, rather than the proper Idina Menzel take from the film itself?
If you're going to attribute 'Try A Little Tenderness' to Otis Redding, then choose John Hughes classic Pretty in Pink as your movie, where Duckie famously lip-synched to the radical soul reworking of Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly and Harry M Woods's jazzy standard.
On The Commitments, it was the cast themselves who implored us to squeeze her, don't tease her, never leave her.

Written and directed by Lou Howe
USA, 2014
The stereotype of mental illness on film is not too dissimilar from the stereotype of mental retardation put forward by the film Tropic Thunder: Successful characters have to be “disturbed,” but they can’t be completely out of control, or else audiences won’t relate to them. Thus, Lou Howe’s debut feature Gabriel, opening this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, draws notice simply because it challenges the rule. The titular character is ill to a degree that the audience cannot completely understand, and he gives an otherwise standard film the depth and edge that it needs.
This will not be clear at the start of the picture. We first meet Gabriel (Rory Culkin) on a lonely search for his long-lost girlfriend, wherein he inadvertently teaches a small child to smoke cigarettes and steals a pair of the girlfriend’s...

There's a lot at stake with the release this Friday of "Noah," and not just for the filmmakers or the studio that sunk a reported $160 million into the film.
In a year when Hollywood is releasing several Bible-inspired movies, "Noah" has become the test case for a number of issues -- whether Hollywood can earn the trust of fundamentalist Christians (and whether it's worth risking money and controversy even to try), whether it's possible to make big-budget spectacles that please both religious viewers and secular action-film fans, and whether directors can make Bible-themed movies that adhere to doctrine without compromising artistically or making dull propaganda.
It would be easy to see this saga as a story of just two players. On the one side is Hollywood, represented here by "Noah" studio Paramount, which would like to attract Christian viewers, and which has practically bent over backward to do so, testing...

“You think you know the story…” so true are those words, it makes writing this review a critical hell, a nightmare of favorably frustrating proportions. The reason for this being, The Cabin In The Woods is one of those films that requires I not slip up and divulge any of it’s many wonderful details that would spoil the geektastically all-encompassing awesomeness of the film. If you are thinking, “Wow, this guy is selling the film rather hard,” you would be partially correct. Partially, because I’m not trying to “sell” the film at all, but on that rare occasion that a film has such a massive impact on my “happy” endorphins on this level, well… I just simply can’t help myself.
The basic story: Five college friends decide to take a break from their studies and spend a weekend in a, yes, you got it… a cabin in the woods.

Before Jay-z and Kanye West turned it into a playground for their lyrical warfare, Otis Redding's 1966 version of "Try a Little Tenderness" was a classic in its own right. Yes, a sampling of the tune appears on "Otis," a track off the highly anticipated Watch the Throne LP, but the song has penetrated pop culture throughout the years, and this latest incarnation of the soulful track proves that the love affair is still strong.

Amber Riley in the "Funeral" episode of "Glee"
Photo: Fox
While there is, no doubt, a bevy of talent on the immensely popular "Glee," the big numbers tend to fall to a select few of the show's castmembers. Like her co-stars Lea Michele and Chris Colfer, actress Amber Riley, who plays big-voiced, big personality Mercedes, is one of those standouts.
And she proved it once again during Tuesday night's episode of Glee, titled "Funeral," in which she took a swing at the classic "Try a Little Tenderness" and knocked it out of the park.
Of course, this is a song that has been giving people goose bumps for nearly 80 years and made its mark on pop culture in that time. Written by Harry M. Woods, James Campbell and Reginald Connelly (a songwriting team better known as "Irving King...
