"Crossing Swords" creators John Havartine IV, Tom Root, and Seth Green are no strangers to stop-motion mayhem, but the medieval Hulu comedy is definitely a new realm of insanity for them to play in. The creators, who are best known for their work on the long-running Adult Swim series "Robot Chicken," created a show about the lives of some very unfortunate peg people, something like "Toy Story" if it were made by sadists. The first season followed the adventures of Patrick ("The Great" star Nicholas Hoult), a lowly squire who gets caught up in loads of medieval mischief. His adventures are full of vulgar language, grotesque...

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
All times are Pacific Daylight.

Just hours after Disney Television Studios unveiled their Comic-Con@Home slate for next month, corporate cousin Hulu is now bringing the heat to the virtual fanfest.
The streamer announced that the dark and horror-filled Marvel’s Helstrom is among its offering coming to the coronavirus created online version of the annual Sdcc. With The Walking Dead franchise and The Simpsons among those already onboard, Comic-Con@Home is set to run from July 23-26.
Along with the Paul Zbyszewski EP’d Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon making its Sdcc debut, Hulu will also be bringing the Thomas Middleditch-led aliens comedy Solar Opposites and the raunchy Crossing Swords. In a case of brand double-dipping, the second season sneak peek at the Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan co-created Solar Opposites was part of the Disney TV announcement earlier today
Earlier this month, Sdcc canceled the 51st edition of their annual shindig due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

A squire’s job never ends and young Patrick is set to pick up his sword again soon.
Hulu has renewed animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords for season 2, according to Variety. The renewal comes just under a week after the first season consisting of 10 episodes premiered on June 12. The show’s second season will receive a 10-episode order as well. Like most streaming services, Hulu does not make its viewership data publicly available but the company must have found something it liked in Crossing Swords’ numbers. The streamer released a brief teaser to celebrate the show’s renewal.
Crossing Swords comes from John Harvatine IV and Tom Root, who were previously best known for their work on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken. The adult animated series follows the adventures of young squire Patrick (Nicholas Hoult) as he works under a king no one particularly likes in a kingdom where no one is particularly happy.

Hulu over the past month launched a foray into original adult animation with the premieres of Solar Opposites and Crossing Swords. Both have now been picked up for additional seasons.
Solar Opposites, which had an initial two-season order, has been renewed for a third season; Crossing Swords has been picked up for a second season.
Hulu first dipped its toe into original adults animated content in its early days with the 2013 The Awesomes. Solar Opposites, which launched May 8 as Hulu’s most-watched original comedy premiere to date, and Crossing Swords, which debuted June 12, are the platform’s first original efforts since but Hulu had been building a slate of acquired adult animated series, including Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty, Futurama and King of the Hill. The category has been driving engagement and currently holds the highest average re-watch rate on the service, which fueled the original expansion.

Hulu has renewed the adult animated comedies “Solar Opposites” and “Crossing Swords.”
The renewal marks a Season 3 pickup for “Solar Opposites,” which was initially given a two-season order when it was first announced. “Crossing Swords” has been picked up for a second season. Season 1 of “Solar Opposites” debuted on May 8, while “Crossing Swords” debuted on June 12. Season 3 of “Solar Opposites” will consist of 12 episodes while Season 2 of “Crossing Swords” will consist of 10.
The two shows mark some of the only adult animation on Hulu to date, though there are multiple such shows in the works at the streamer. There were previously four Marvel animated shows set up at Hulu, but two of them were scrapped back in January. Both “M.O.D.O.K.” and “Hit Monkey” are still moving forward.
Animation is also one of the few types of production that has been able to weather the production shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Seth Green Talks ‘Crossing Swords’, R-Rated Stop Motion Animation And The Critical Need For Laughter
The new Hulu comedy Crossing Swords isn’t your typical family-friendly stop-motion animation series. In fact, it’s not family-friendly at all — but you would know that already if you have seen anything on Robot Chicken. Created and written by Robot Chicken executive producers John Harvatine IV and Tom Root, Crossing Swords takes us to the time of royals, peasants, knights and mythical — and things get hilariously lewd and quite graphic. If anything, it will make us look at toy peg people in a completely different light. Seth Green, who lends a voice to the series and also serves as Ep was more than excited to reteam with his Robot Chicken cohorts to tell this very fun — and R-rated — story.
“John [Harvatine] and [Tom Root] came up with this concept and all I had to do was say it was awesome and then help get it to air,” Green told Deadline. “I’ve...

No one is going to confuse “Crossing Swords” for being a treasure trove of subtlety. The medieval-set animated series cracks giant dragon eggs, roasts tiny adorable animals, sets up a sex-fueled monarch, establishes another as a sucker for monster track rally-level spectacle, and answers the age-old conundrum: If animated people made from woodblocks don’t have arms, do they still have genitals?
And that’s just the first episode.
The new Hulu comedy is a cavalcade of sight gags and glancing pop culture nods, all set within the confines of this kingdom where members of the royal family and their minions are offered detailed expressive features, while many of the peasant class get simple painted, nondescript faces. The show is a spiritual descendant of “Robot Chicken,” the stop-motion Adult Swim staple where “Crossing Swords” co-creators John Harvatine IV and Tom Root served as executive producers.

It’s the evolution of animation. It can be argued that “The Simpsons” opened the door for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which in turn kicked down the door to let in shows including “Bojack Horseman,” “Archer” and “Rick & Morty.” U.S animators are serving up not only raunchy comedy but also sophisticated storytelling. Outside the U.S., animated features have a long history of telling difficult stories — most recently “The Swallows of Kabul” and “Funan” are two films that tackled horrific events. Animation aimed at adults is on the rise worldwide.
In his recently released white paper, “Adult Animation Finally Breaking Free of Its Comedy Shackles,” John Evershed, head of High Concentrate, which specializes in the packaging, development and sales of animated TV series and movies for adult audiences, notes that adult animated series have been driving ratings on both linear TV and SVODs for the past few years.

Recent shows like Game of Thrones, Miracle Workers, and Disenchantment have done a good job of removing the idealized sheen of our culture’s idea of the Middle Ages. Yes, there were beautiful queens, noble knights, and plenty of chivalry to go around. But there was also war, disease, famine, and more horse poop than you could possibly conceive of. Now Hulu’s Crossing Swords is set to explore the dark side of the medieval world even further.

This Crossing Swords review contains no spoilers and is based on all 10 episodes of the season.
“Did I help the kingdom or commit murder?”
In the past few years there’s been an exceptional bloat of comedic animated series that tackle the Medieval era and the tropes that come along with it. Disenchantment, Harmonquest, Tigtone, and Apollo Gauntlet are all set in extremely similar playgrounds and even though they’re different shows in nature, they all utilize a familiar tone with their deconstruction of these well-established relics from Medieval times. This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to do something unique and worthwhile in this setting, but it makes it much more difficult to stand out and have a project that can truly justify itself. In that regard, Crossing Swords faces a steep uphill battle and while this show isn’t exactly doing anything that’s not already being explored in comparable programming,...

Live-action series may be shut down because of our current global issues, but animation is thriving — and Hulu is particularly enmeshed in the medium at the moment. Their latest venture into the world of colorful characters is “Crossing Swords,” and you can watch the teaser below.

The network has ordered a “Masked Singer” spinoff series called “The Masked Dancer,” inspired by the segment from “The Ellen Show.” The announcement was made at Fox’s Television Critics Association day in Pasadena, coupled with the news that Ellen DeGeneres herself is on board as an executive producer.

As part of its continued push into animation, Fox has ordered a stop-motion holiday special from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the Emmy-winning studio founded by Seth Green, John Harvatine IV, Matthew Senreich and Eric Towner. The special was announced today during Fox’s presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, CA.
Written by Emmy winner Tom Root (Robot Chicken), what is described as the “irreverent” special will premiere next winter on Fox, as part of its “Not So Silent Nights” holiday-themed programming.
Per the official logline, the “visceral, action-packed hour of holiday insanity will feature classic holiday icons, including Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, who come together with brand-new minor mascots from Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving and even Daylight Savings Day.’

With its new season, “Robot Chicken” will be hitting two very special milestones — a 10th season and a 200th episode — but the team behind the Adult Swim show are not focused on such industry markers.
“Whenever I see the anniversary episode of a sitcom or anything, the time they take to celebrate the anniversary is not as funny or entertaining as if they just made an episode. So I saw it more of a burden, in a way: How do we make this as entertaining as it should be?” co-head writer and executive producer Doug Goldstein tells Variety.
The answer for those who break the pop culture inspired sketches was to “do what we usually do,” according to writer Mike Fasolo. And what “Robot Chicken” usually does is dive deep into pop culture — sometimes as deep as “really obscure properties that we remember from our childhoods that mabe no one else remembers,...

Seth Green and several other writers and producers of the Robot Chicken team are set to develop a new adult animated comedy for Hulu called Crossing Swords. The streaming service has ordered a pilot. I love what Green and his team have done with Robot Chicken and this new series is sure to be just as funny and entertaining. Here are the story details:
When Patrick, a goodhearted young peasant with dreams of earning his knighthood and dispensing justice to evildoers, lands a coveted squire position at the royal castle, his dream job quickly turns into a nightmare. In this kingdom, corruption starts at the top, and staying true to his lofty goals will be a thornier proposition than Patrick anticipated. It’s all the sex, violence and full-frontal nudity you’d expect from a “premium fantasy soap starring pre-school toys.”
Green will be an executive producer on the series alongside Matt Senreich,...

Seth Green and several other “Robot Chicken” writers and producers have sold an adult animated comedy pilot to Hulu, Variety has learned exclusively.
The series is titled “Crossing Swords.” When Patrick, a goodhearted young peasant with dreams of earning his knighthood and dispensing justice to evildoers, lands a coveted squire position at the royal castle, his dream job quickly turns into a nightmare. In this kingdom, corruption starts at the top, and staying true to his lofty goals will be a thornier proposition than Patrick anticipated. It’s all the sex, violence and full-frontal nudity you’d expect from a “premium fantasy soap starring pre-school toys.”

Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken, an outrageous-stop motion comedy series, is known for going over the line on many an occasion. uInterview caught up with Robot Chicken’s Breckin Meyer, along with fellow writer Zeb Wells and producer Tom Root at the recent San Diego Comic-Con 2014 to find out what exactly qualifies as “too much” for their show. Meyer recalls a raunchy sketch involving a rabbit and a sleeping child that was deemed too dirty even for Robot Chicken’s audience. “There was one sketch I wrote where a rabbit was ****ing into a little boy’s sleeping mouth," Meyer told uInterview exclusively. "They found problems with that. They didn’t really get the internal logic of the skit, but yeah things like that.”...
