Dropkick Murphys have announced a second album of songs featuring lyrics by folk legend Woody Guthrie. The new LP, titled Okemah Rising, arrives May 12th and is preceded by the single “I Know How It Feels.”
Okemah Rising follows 2022’s This Machine Still Kills Fascists, which also is comprised of acoustic songs written around Guthrie’s previously-unpublished lyrics. Among the guests on the upcoming release are Violent Femmes, Jesse Ahern, and Jaime Wyatt.
“Every night, when the audience is singing along with Woody’s words, his steadfast defense of the working class, and his fight against social injustice and the abuse of political power comes across loud and clear,” said Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey in a press release. “So as long as Dropkick Murphys are involved, Woody’s message will always be heard.”

Chicago – The term “throwback” is bantered about with such regularity these days that it loses its meaning. An authentic throwback, however, is the eclectic pop culture store “Shake, Rattle & Read,” which closes its doors at the end of business Saturday, May 21st, 2016. The outlet, an Uptown neighborhood mainstay, has been owned by the same family for 50 years. Current owner Ric Addy is ready to say goodbye to all that.
Ric Addy is a throwback retail hustler, riding the shock wave of the changes to the Uptown neighborhood since taking over the store from his sister in 1986. He began in the record store business, when the wax platter was the music delivery system of choice. After gaining experience from Rose Records downtown, and the Record Exchange in Evanston (Illinois, north of Chicago), he decided to take over the “Book Box” location his sister had run since 1966. Alt-rock veterans Violent Femmes recruited Stephen Colbert for a quirky rendition of their 1983 classic "Blister in the Sun" Tuesday on The Late Show. The web-exclusive clip features a gushing introduction from the host, who says of "Blister," "I think I've played [it] a thousand times, and I can't wait to hear a thousand and one."
The trio perform in an acoustic setup, with live percussionist John Sparrow wielding brushes on a barbecue grill. After a brief audience sing-along, frontman Gordon Gano calls out Colbert for a cameo, which includes hushed singing and hilarious jazz-folk scatting.

Making a good mix tape takes some skill. Making a great mix tape is a work of art. In order to make a great mix you need to listen to a wide range of artists. You also need to consider the audience. In other words, who are you making the mix for? It’s always smart to select music that you are guaranteed meets the tastes of the listener, but it also good to experiment and include some tracks that they may have never heard otherwise. Creating a message with the mix is also a plus, and I personally love to add tons of movie clips as an added bonus. There has to be a specific flow as well. Pacing is essential in creating a mood (or moods), but you don’t want any of the juxtapositions to be too jarring. And as with any form of editing, you need...

Today is the Fourth of July, America's great big birthday, and what better to do on such a festive occasion than to barbecue some meat (or delicious vegetables), gather with friends and listen to some carefully chosen tunes while staring at the blinding light of impressive pyrotechnic shows overhead.
Well, you're in luck! We've put together a list of the 20 songs you should be listening to on Independence Day. Scroll down for the very indie playlist and let us know what songs you would add in the comments.
1. "Independence Day" - Elliott Smith
Let's start this holiday off with indie royalty.
2. "The Star Spangled Banner" - Sufjan Stevens
A little alternative patriotism.
3. "Parades Go By" - The Magnetic Fields
Because Fourth of July parades are almost as good as St. Patrick's Day.

The Replacements, one of the biggest punk rock bands of the 1980s, is planning to reunite this summer at Riot Fest 2013, a multi-band tour heading to Toronto, Denver and Chicago.
An active band from 1979 to 1991, the members of The Replacements have not performed as a single live band since July 4, 1991. That last show, performed in Grant Park, Chicago, has become legendary -- roadies gradually replaced band members on stage until all were gone, leading to the nickname "It Ain't Over 'Til the Fat Roadie Plays."
Technically, The Replacements never broke up. The band members just stopped playing.
That all changed in October 2012. Singer Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson officially reformed the band in order to record an Ep, "Songs for Slim." Only 250 copies of the vinyl album were made and sold in order to benefit Slim Dunlap, the Replacements' guitarist, after a stroke.

Lena Dunham's HBO show Girls-and the online conversation that has surrounded it since its April debut-calls to mind something Violent Femmes singer Gordon Gano told Details magazine back in 1993. Paraphrasing the Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset, he noted how "the youth, because he is not yet anything determinate and irrevocable, is everything potentially. Herein lies his charm and his insolence. Feeling that he is everything potentially he supposes that he is everything actually." This keen blend of youthful charm and insolence has made Girls both a critical darling and a topic of intense debate about how the show represents (or fails to represent) one generation's experience of sex, gender, race, privilege, and potential.
For those of us who were Dunham's age in the pop-culture cycle of the early 1990s, there is something eerily familiar in the way Girls-which concludes its first season on Sunday-has set off...

Fair warning, don’t click through if you don’t want to hear a Spoiler from New Girl’s finale. Last night’s season-ender centered on whether Nick (Jake Johnson) would vacate the loft to live with his on-again girlfriend Caroline. After packing up the moving van and taking all the roommates on an odyssey of togetherness, everyone returned home to the loft without Nick. But then! Nick returned and with a fitting fanfare: AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.” The roommates each rocked out in their respective rooms, and it was a wonderful close to a strong first season.

The first ever Digital Content NewFronts wrapped Wednesday, May 2nd with a performance by Jay-z at YouTube’s Brandcast. Other acts at other events included, but were not limited to John Legend tickling the ivories at Vevo, Gordon Ganzo of the Violent Femmes pumping up the crowd at Yahoo, and NYC improv group Baby Wants Candy emceeing the showcase at Dbg (often in song). The sketch specialists incorporated talent from the new media studio and distribution company’s pre-existing and upcoming online video programming lineup (which mostly consisted of the hosts from the various series on Spaces, Dbg’s...

The Digital Content NewFronts are a series of dog and pony shows digital content platforms, creators and providers put on to showcase their previous, current, and upcoming digital entertainment properties to brand representatives and advertisers. The showcasing is generally the easy part. Companies put together sexy sizzle reels with compelling metrics showing how X many million individuals in Y demographics are watching Z amounts of their programming. The hard part is getting the brand representatives and advertisers in the room to watch the showcase. That’s why many events during the Digital Content NewFronts incorporate things like free cocktails, tuna tartare, and appearances by John Legend, Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, Heidi Klum, and other famous musicians and celebrities. There needs to be some kind of draw to get as many of the people who control the right kinds of advertising dollars in the room as possible. That’s...

"Beautiful girl, lovely dress, where she is now I can only guess." It's not just a Violent Femmes lyric, it's also a movie called "Gone" starring that big-eyed beauty Amanda Seyfried.
In this taut thriller, Seyfried plays Jill, a young woman still suffering Ptsd from a kidnapping she survived. Her sister Molly comes to live with her, and when Molly vanishes, Jill has to try to track her down, possibly from her previous attacker. Where's Molly? She's gone, daddy, gone.
1. She can't hear him, but the cop inside the squad car is yelling, "I Loved 'Letters To Juliet'! Can I Have Your Autograph?!"
2. And now a scene from this week's "Law & Order: Pretty Victims Unit."
3. Wes Bentley looks awfully shifty in these clips, but they'd never cast him as a bad guy, right? Right?...

When Ezra Furman and the Harpoons’ first record came out, there was a good argument to be made that the scene could actually use a dead-on Violent Femmes doppelganger. In a scene with a lot of yelp, to have the brand of yelp that comes with a blistering sense of humor and vaguely pervy garage-rock abandon was a good palate cleanser and a nice antidote to the last decades’ raft of monochromatic Englishmen in tight jeans. Years later, though, Furman has the sense to branch out and try to seek his own less referential voice and broaden his sonic palette.

Norman, Okla. – I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that the world’s greatest party-thrower, Girl Talk, was going to be at the Opolis – a tiny venue in the college town of Norman, Oklahoma, that showcases indie acts and local bands with a capacity well below 200. This must be some kind of mistake, I thought, but just the thought of seeing such a huge act in such an intimate setting was awesome.
Turns out, Girl Talk – also known by his common name, Greg Gillis – is in the midst of a guerilla tour of sorts that is hitting up only eight college cities across the states. For the Axe One Night Only Tour 2011, Gillis is going old-school by performing secret shows in low capacity venues, announcing details of the gigs just days before show time via the Axe Facebook page (four more secret stops are scheduled for this Tuesday through Friday,...

Before all things started going to hell before anything even began, I knew The Crow remake was never supposed to happen. Never mind that I really, really, really hate remakes, reboots, revamps, or whatever, because, if the original classic was good, then leave it alone!
'28 Days Later' director drops out of 'The Crow' remake
However, Hollywood is unoriginal and no one can think of any good scripts to write, so remake hell it is. But here's why Relativity Media should take a hint and just completely drop The Crow reboot altogether. Let's forget the fact that they just lost a director, have no leading man and most of the actors hyped to be in the script have dropped out. I'll turn a blind eye to that right now and give you the real reasons why this project is an utter and complete disgrace.

In this week's Music in the Movies, we pick out ten of cinema's finest non-score soundtracks...
Having focused mainly on scores in this column, I thought I’d turn my attention to soundtracks that consist mainly of sourced material. I've chose some of my favourites, and also asked some Den of Geek 's writers to suggest a few choices of their own. And just to make the list a little more balanced, I've made sure to only choose one film per director...

So given that I wanted to include only one film per filmmaker, out went Trainspotting, and in came A Life Less Ordinary.

The stock markets are in a free fall. They're rioting in England. I keep hearing the words, "sovereign debt" all around me, our politicians hate each other almost as much as we hate our politicians, and "Eureka" just got cancelled. It's August, folks. The dog days. Satan just dropped his hand-basket off, and we're all about to take a trip.
But if these GIFs don't remove the corn cobs from your collective asses, get the sand out of your vaginas, and levitate your spirits just a little, then I give up.
Put on some Violent Femmes and take it all in, y'all.

It's been 20 years since fans flocked to Chicago for the first Lollapalooza music festival to catch a glimpse of Ice-t and the Violent Femmes. After struggling in the late '90s as bands lost interest in festivals, Lolla's now stronger than ever thanks to a sturdy partnership with the city's park district. If you're one of the 225,000 fans visiting Grant Park in August to hear headliners Eminem and Coldplay, you'll need a few breaks from the crowd. Here's where to take them.

Justin Vernon just got an official day of celebration named after his band, and he's only released two albums. (One, the new Bon Iver Bon Iver, is currently playing on the office radio, as it has been every twenty to thirty minutes for the past month.) Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced yesterday that today would be official "Bon Iver Day" in Milwaukee; the band is playing two shows there this weekend. Did Violent Femmes ever get so lucky? How about Alice Cooper? He's not from Milwaukee, but he certainly shilled hard for it in Wayne's World. Okay, enough speculation — here's Barrett's extremely official announcement (from Tap Milwaukee, via obviously The Av Club, although we'll now bookmark Tap Milwaukee for future Milwaukee-related stories). Whereas, Bon Iver was founded in 2007 by Justin Vernon in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he continues [...]...

Eureka's more like the oddball music you might have caught in the late '80s, but with a decidedly modern feel. What I mean is, this ain't Devo, Dead Milkmen, Violent Femmes, or They Might Be Giants, but if you liked those twists on "alternative music," you might find yourself grinnin' and bobbin' to Eureka. The Bridesmaids soundtrack. As Tammy Wynette famously opined, sometimes it’s hard to be a woman (she also said they’re justified and they’re ancient, and they drive an ice cream van, but perhaps the less said about that pearl of wisdom the better). To refine the Tamster’s commentary, and give it a veneer of pertinence, sometimes it’s hard to be a woman in Hollywood. Most of the roles that come your way are as much peripheral window dressing as the government jobs dished out to the gals in Gordon Brown’s ill-fated regime of ineptitude were, and that’s only if you’re lucky enough to be the junior side of 35. Once that age bridge has been crossed, the scripts’ll dry up quicker a club comedian who’s just been told his car’s been towed.

Sometime in between hearing The Pogues’ “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” in a minivan commercial and the words “Whaaaat the Fffff?” fully processing in my brain, I decided to cathertically compile the following list of the 20 Most Inappropriate Songs Ever Used In Commercials. This subject has been broached numerous times online before, but before doing some research (some Google, but mostly library microfiche), I had no idea just how widespread this phenomenon was. Prepare your “huh?”s now: 20. Wendy’s – “Blister In The Sun” by Violent Femmes Nothing gets people in the mood for some Value Menu chili quite like one of pop music’s most notorious masturbation songs! I love Wendy’s and make it a point to stop there on any road trip, but I’m not sure I’ve ever been quite… that… excited about the fry-Frosty combination. Could they not acquire the rights...

Frost the cupcakes and get the trick candles ready, because it's time to wish dynamic rock frontman and Lollapalooza godfather Perry Farrell a very happy birthday. The diverse rocker is now 52 years old and is still going strong as the frontman of seminal band Jane's Addiction. But on this special day, it's time to look back at one of his more underrated projects.
When it came time for Jane's Addiction to call it quits, Farrell staged the first Lollapalooza as a farewell tour for the band in the summer of 1991 (that tour also featured Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails, Living Colour, Ice-t and Body Count, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band, Violent Femmes and Fishbone). With the band in his rearview, Farrell formed a new combo called Porno for Pyros (which also featured Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins). With just a few more days left til the end of February, now's the time to get in on Amazon's $5.00 MP3 album deal of the month for February 2011: 100 Albums For $5.
Here's some of my favorite picks from the 100 albums on sale: Dio's first album Holy Diver; John Lennon's Imagine; Pat Benatar's Crimes Of Passion; and Fugazi's 13 Songs. There's plenty of other selections from other genres (I saw some R. Kelly, Lil Wayne, Lenny Kravitz, Usher, The Judds, Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, The Smiths, Violent Femmes, Frank Sinatra, and many more.)
There's also a $.69 Song Sale (they are typically $.99 each) where thousands of songs are discounted. You can go to the main page and then view by genre from the list on the left -- there's 102 hard rock/heavy metal songs to choose from (you know that's my area) from bands like Megadeth, Accept, Sepultura, Tesla,...

This is the story of an eccentric multi-millionaire, erotic art, Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the bassist of the Violent Femmes. Oh, and the country's efforts to increase its population, too.
Tasmania is looking to boost its immigrant population and is putting itself on the map for avant-garde art in its latest efforts to lure travelers and settlers alike. The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) opens this week and aims to be Australia's first "subversive adult Disneyland," complete with erotic art installations, intersecting with themes of life and death.
The museum will showcase the collection of resident multi-millionaire David Walsh in a three-story building designed by architect Nonda Katsalidis and is Australia's largest private museum open to the public. The collection is appraised at $100 million and includes work from artists Damien Hirst and Jean-Michel Basquiat, among dozens of others.
"Mona is an unmuseum, a counterpoint to museums," curator Mark Fraser tells Fast Company.

Lollapalooza started out as a travelling showcase for bands like Butthole Surfers, Violent Femmes, and Jane's Addiction (whose frontman, Perry Farrell, founded the fest). And now it's going international for the first time (at least if you don't count Canada). It was announced today that the festival, which has been a weekend event in Chicago since 2005, will expand to Santiago, Chile in April 2011. Held over two days, the event will showcase bands from Chile and bands from other countries as well, but no schedule has been released yet. In a statement from Farrell, he said said that he hopes bands from the Chicago version will come down and vice versa, calling it "a musical foreign exchange." I don't want to generalize a whole generation, but: not bad for a bunch of slacker [...]...

How a few side gigs with his former band led to a post-rock career as an arts entrepreneur and tea shop owner.
The Violent Femmes bassist has officially chosen the most non-violent alternative career path ever known to man: purveying tea. But that doesn't mean he's lost his rock 'n' roll edge. Now based in Hobart, Tasmania, with his wife and business partner, scientist Varuni Kulasekera, Ritchie and his wife are yet another example of creative and entrepreneurial folks turning to tea as a way to combine passion and business and fill a niche market. I chatted with Ritchie and Kulasekera, who own Chado the Way of Tea, at the Hong Kong International Tea Fair last week. The two travel the world sourcing premium teas and were in Hong Kong on their way back from Kulasekera's native Sri Lanka to their home in Hobart. So how did a pioneer of...

Here's what we found out at the Hong Kong International Tea Fair, Asia's premiere tea source expo.
In the U.S. and Europe, Mariage Freres, Kusmi, and Samovar Tea Lounge have all introduced the tea bar concept with varying degrees of success. But in Hong Kong, where tea shops are aplenty and are frequented regularly by elderly Chinese getting their daily medicinal fix, the introduction of a modern, stylish, Western-friendly tea bar would be a true break with tradition. Yet that's exactly what Nicholas Tung has brewing.
Tung, a U.S. and London-educated businessman who hails from a family of Hong Kong entrepreneurs, decided to start a contemporary tea brand, Essense, as a passion project (he also runs real estate and private equity firms). Officially launched at the 2009 Hong Kong International Tea Fair, Tung is planning a serious expansion with the introduction of the legendary tea bar concept to Hong Kong.

Courtesy Steve Almond. As Elvis Costello (or maybe Frank Zappa, depending on who you believe) once quipped, writing about music is like dancing about architecture. This may be a fair comparison, but you’ll never find people who care so deeply about architecture who are also so crappy at dancing. The real problem with writing about music is that almost nobody can do it. We all love our favorite musicians with the passion and clear-sightedness of a Lester Bangs or a Chuck Klosterman, but very few of us are capable of explaining why without sounding like a four-year-old trying to describe why Yo Gabba Gabba is so awesome. That’s why Steve Almond’s new memoir, Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life—published by Random House and available for your reading pleasure next Tuesday—is such a breath of fresh air. Almond writes about the music he loves (and...

The band Harley Poe, mixes horror and humor into their folk-influenced songs, such as “Corpse-Grindin’ Man” and “I Could Always Eat Your Brain.” Lead singer, Joe Whiteford, spoke with me to discuss music, his artwork, and the upcoming new Harley Poe album.
Js/Fango: How did the name “Harley Poe” come up for the name of the band?
Jw: There’s really no good answer. I always give a different answer for this because it’s kind of lame. I was on tour with my other band (Calibretto 13) and we were on the verge of breaking up. I knew I wanted to start another band with a horror theme. I thought it had a good ring to it. That’s really about it. People think it’s from Harley Davidson, Harley Quinn from Batman, and from Edgar Allen Poe. I love Edgar Allen Poe but I liked the name Poe.

There's a moment 3 seconds into Walking, the opening track on Visiter, The Dodos second LP that got me hooked on the band. Its nothing huge. Nothing revolutionary. Its just lead singer/guitarist, Meric Long's immense fingernails plucking a single note so viciously that the whole guitar's fret board rattles and buzzes right before the constant stomp begins. Its a brilliant sound and, though worlds apart in song writing, influences and tone, its this rawness that gives the Dodos a sound reminiscent of The Violent Femmes eponymous debut. That beautiful, alive and chaotically controlled sound of a band playing right in front of you. So last night as the three piece took to the stage in London's small but perfectly formed, Bush Hall and showed us exactly how that smashing sound is made, any inklings to the fact that their new record Time to Die, was maybe a little too polished,...

Despite what you might have heard, in the summer of 1991, when I was 12 years old and terrified of everything, I didn't actually go to Lollapalooza.
This is a pretty big revelation, as I have spent the subsequent 18 years pretending that I actually did go to Lolla '91 ("Man, Body Count were crazy"), and to this day, I'm not really sure why I didn't. I mean, it was certainly the biggest thing to hit the Central Florida Fairgrounds that summer — the standard-bearers of Alternative Nation (Jane's Addiction, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Violent Femmes, Nine Inch Nails, the Rollins Band, etc.) in sleepy, swampy Orlando, Florida! — and I had a ticket and everything ($20, which was a lot of...

Sometimes a film's trailer comes down to not the visuals -- well, they still are important -- but the choice of music/score. One of the reason's I loved the first trailer for Adventureland is that it used the track "Blister in the Sun" from Violent Femmes. I love that track! I though the film looked like an A-comedy but, without the track, it would have been closer to a B.
Yes, music is that important to me; even if it doesn't end up in the film. So now we have the film's red band trailer and, not wanting to fix something that isn't broke, the Violent Femmes play a score to a wonderful compilation of obscenities.

[Because it has been a long day filled with jet lag and many meetings I’m totally going to cheat here and simply copy and paste what I said about Adventureland when the original trailer appeared.]
You know what makes Greg Mottola’s Adventureland feel so different from the current string of teen comedy films being cranked out by Hollywood? Instead of being a film cranked out by a bunch of guys in suits in a boardroom trying to cram in as much stuff as they think kids like, Mottola has instead made what is pretty obviously a loving memory of what being a kid was like. Sure, it’s been tweaked and massaged a bit but the spirit of this is so clearly loving and nostalgic and the cast so strong across the board that it’s pretty hard not to fall in love with it. Plus it’s got The Violent Femmes. I love The Violent Femmes.
Summary, such as it is: Rich college kid (Aka Greg Mottola substitute), wants to go to Europe, parents make him take the first paying job he’s ever had,...
