When we watch a TV show, we become attached to the characters we see on screen. We start caring about them like if they were real, we give them advice sitting on our couches and we root for them, too. It’s only natural if you have even a little note of compassion in you.
However, sometimes our beloved characters die on screen, and of course that makes us feel sad. And while some TV shows have no way of bringing back fallen characters, some, like soap operas or fantasy dramas, have a reputation for being able to do so.
With the news that Stranger Things season 5 already started production, fans are even more passionate about sharing their views on what the upcoming season would bring to them. There were a lot of talks about the desire to bring back, for example, Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn.

Chicago – The journey of a thousand miles begins … in the case of “Hard Miles” starring Matthew Modine … with a single pedal. “Hard Miles” joins the pantheon of cycling movies, in this case with Modine portraying a social worker who teaches his life lessons through a bicycling journey with his youthful charges.
The based-on-truth story features Greg (Modine) as a beleaguered social worker at a Colorado juvenile correctional cente, with a passion for bicycle challenges and a revelatory idea for rehabilitation … rounding up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students to complete a transformative 762 mile ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. To achieve their goal, this determined mentor and his disgruntled teenage squad will battle heat stroke, speed wobbles, mountainous inclines, and most of all each other to come together as a unified team.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and fiancé Jake Bongiovi, son of musician Jon Bon Jovi, are tying the knot with Brown’s costar, Matthew Modine, officiating.
Modine, known for his roles in Full Metal Jacket and Vision Quest, plays Brown’s father figure in the Netflix hit series Stranger Things. While Modine’s character, known as “Papa” by Eleven or Dr. Martin Brenner, isn’t the kindest in the show, there was nothing but love from Modine when he announced he will officiate the young couple’s marriage.
Modine told Access Daily, “I have one of those licenses to get people married and Millie thought it’d be great, and then Jake said it would be a great idea, so I wrote the wedding vows and they loved what I wrote for them to join hands and to become husband and wife.”

When it was announced that Linda Hamilton would be joining Stranger Things for its fifth and final season, it felt like a perfect addition to the cast, as she was a favorite presence in the 1980s, when the series is set. She, too, is a fan of the Netflix show…and that’s precisely why she won’t watch the season she’ll be featured in.
Speaking with Us Weekly, Linda Hamilton said that being cast in Stranger Things will interfere with her appreciation of the show, adding that she won’t be able to finish it like the rest of its fans. “When you really buy into something, you don’t see yourself in it. So I think in a way, it kind of ruined the show for me. I never watch [a project], once I’m in something…It would just completely take me out of the reality of it to see myself in there.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” now playing on London’s West End.
“Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a prequel play to Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, officially opened on London’s West End on Thursday night. Coming straight from the “Stranger Things” creative team — with a script by series writer and co-executive producer Kate Trefry from an original story by Trefry and show creators Matt and Ross Duffer — the play is a direct link to the Upside Down viewers know and love. Except this time, the audience is transported back to the 1950s to bear witness to the antics of a different group of teenagers: The Party’s parents.
Directed by Stephen Daldry, “The First Shadow” focuses on Joyce Maldonado (Isabella Pappas), a spunky teen known for dating bad boys like Lonnie Byers but whose true passion is theater; James Hopper Jr. (Oscar Lloyd...

“Stranger Things” did not disappoint after the nearly three-year wait between Seasons 3 and 4. The cast aged offscreen, but the events in the fourth season would age anybody, especially when it involves trying to save the world.
The supersized Season 4 built up much backstory with its nine episodes — each at least over an hour long, with the finale taking two hours and twenty minutes to unfold. It was also split into two volumes, the first half containing the majority of the episodes, leaving us with the epic reveal of Vecna’s true identity. The finale of Season 4 spelled out some impending doom for the small town of Hawkins, Indiana.
The Duffer Brothers have already started dropping hints about the fifth and final season of their science fiction drama series, and the writer’s room is open. Here’s what we know about “Stranger Things” Season 5 so far:

While much time still stands before the conclusion to the Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” Netflix series, with Season 5 awaiting a deal for its actors, the prequel play — “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” — will give audiences a glimpse further into the past and the origins of the Upside Down.
Set in 1959 Hawkins, the play will focus on the arrival of Henry Creel to “a regular town with regular worries.” Teenage Jim Hopper, Bob Newby and Joyce Maldonado also star, as does a younger Dr. Martin Brenner (Patrick Vaill), who began the cruel experiments on Young Henry.
As with any new iteration of “Stranger Things,” there’s a new crucial character — this time, it’s Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams). There is also a Principal Newby (Matthew Pigeon), but that figure is of less importance to the plot.

Chicago – The stature and talent of actor Matthew Modine has loomed large for nearly two generations. I don't know about you, but to me, nothing is more disturbing than someone claiming to care for you while doing nefarious things that mess with your life. It's why Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), the man behind the mind experiments from the Netflix series "Stranger Things" is so horrifying. Dr. Brenner, aka the Papa that Eleven is supposed to love while he messes with her brain is scarier than Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and all the Demogorgons combined. In-your-face evil is one thing, but when you're brainwashed into thinking someone cares about you, and then realize that they're working for their own selfish and cruel ends, it's gut-wrenching. It's rough to watch, and, according to a 2022 interview Modine did with Men's Health, it's hard to play as well.
Modine shared what it was like to try to purge this character from his mind and body, why he doesn't want to do it again,...

This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things" season 4.
In "Stranger Things" season 4, Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower) dons several identities over the years. Starting off as a soft-spoken aloof young boy with a fascination with death and decay, Henry goes on to become Dr. Martin Brenner's (Matthew Modine) patient zero — dubbed 001 — and this path only exacerbates his darkest desires and the need to reshape the world as per his desires. Young Henry's motivations are not rooted in trauma or circumstantial tragedy, but in an acute awareness of his abilities that supersede those of other people, as well as a deep sense of apathy for the world around him. While Henry's time with Brunner only serves to heighten his loneliness in a world unable to accommodate his desires, his eventual turn into Vecna results from greed, hubris, and the need to play God in an alien, lawless realm with monstrous entities.

Matthew Modine: ‘I didn’t want to do Stranger Things but the Duffer Brothers kept ringing me up’
The actor and environmentalist on playing Atticus Finch, the character’s importance today, and why he dyed his hair white for Stranger Things
Actor Matthew Modine, born in California in 1959, came to fame in the 1980s, most notably in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket (1987). More recently, he’s best known for playing Dr Martin Brenner, the sinister scientist in the Netflix series Stranger Things. Next week, he steps into the role of the crusading Atticus Finch, a lawyer defending an innocent black man on a charge of rape, in Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird in the West End. Married since 1980, he has two children and lives in New York.
What made you want to play the part of Atticus Finch?
The content of the story – it’s specifically about the history of racism in the United States. The past is not something that’s ancient history.

When "Stranger Things" season 1 implied Matthew Modine's Dr. Martin Brenner was killed off-screen by a demogorgon, anyone and everyone remotely familiar with the clichés of the horror genre didn't buy it for a second. Sure enough, Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) insidious "Papa" resurfaced in season 4, a little banged-up but otherwise no worse for wear and back to controlling his "daughter" under the guise of helping her regain her powers.
The dynamic between Eleven and Dr. Brenner has always been a toxic one, starting with Brenner taking Eleven away from her birth mother and subjecting her to all sorts of dangerous and harmful experiments with dire consequences for the world at large (as we've come to see). Yet, there's no doubt Brenner also cared for Eleven and the other children in his experiments — or, rather, he believed he cared about them. In truth, Brenner's callous outlook and inflated ego...

Matthew Modine’s Dr. Martin Brenner seemed to be one of the definitive deaths in “Stranger Things 4,” but the actor is refusing to believe his character is gone for good. Brenner, commonly referred to as “Papa” by Mille Bobby Brown’s Eleven, was shot several times in the fourth season’s penultimate episode. No character outright proclaimed Papa dead, but he was last seen bleeding out on the desert ground with seemingly no one around to save him.
Recently asked by Vulture if he would consider Papa dead, Modine answered, “No, I wouldn’t. Because I wouldn’t want him to be dead. Three things are curious to me: How did he survive the Demogorgon? How did he survive One? And when Eleven tries to use her power against Dr. Brenner after blowing three guards in the air, he unflinchingly thwarts her and says, ‘You didn’t think it was going to be that easy,...

When asked by our sister site Variety if uber-villain Vecna will return in the fifth and final season of the Netflix hit sci-fi show, actor Jamie Campbell Bower replied with this cryptic four-word answer: “I couldn’t possibly say.”
Bower added that “Matt and Ross have their own thing going there,” referring to “Stranger Things” showrunners The Duffer Brothers. “When they want to bring forward it, I’m sure they will. So we’ll see. We’ll wait and see what they’ve got planned for sure.” As for whether he knows how the show will eventually end, the English star replied, “I don’t think so!”

If you’re reading this article, there’s an extremely high chance that you’ve not only watched Stranger Things 4 Volume 1, but you probably loved it just like the rest of the world. It was an incredible, pulse-pounding volume that proved to us that even the most beloved characters in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, aren’t as safe as we think.
Just when we thought things couldn’t possibly get any crazier, the volume one finale, “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab,” whacks us over the head with the realization that the sweet and shy orderly at Hawkins Lab with young Eleven is actually “One,” the first of the lab to get his superpowers.
Not only that, but One is also Henry Creel, who turns out to be a pretty unhinged kid who essentially gets pleasure out of hurting people and animals. And, to top it all off, it...

Warning: contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4 vol. I & II.
Stranger Things is never shy about saluting its film inspirations. So when the Netflix show appears to quote from an extremely famous movie scene, it’s worth chewing over the potential implications. Especially when the extremely famous movie scene in question backs up a major twist some fans are predicting for Stranger Things Season 5.
In Eleven’s pivotal flashback in Season 4, Episode 7 ‘The Massacre at Hawkins Lab’, the creepy lab orderly revealed to be a grown-up Henry Creel/One/Future Vecna gets his telekinetic powers back, kills everybody and makes Eleven an offer: “If you come with me, for the first time in your life you will be free. Imagine what we could do together. We could reshape the world. Reimagine it however we see fit. Join me.”

We've had a few days to process the big developments that played on Stranger Things Season 4.
If you kept up to speed with our Stranger Things reviews, or if you watched the show, there's a good chance you're scratching your head about some of the creative decisions.
In a new interview with Josh Horowitz, the Duffer Brothers opened up about which characters are definitely dead following the emotional finale.
Fortunately for Eleven (and us viewers!), Matthew Modine's Martin Brenner is "definitively" dead, "for real this time."
Brenner has got to be one of the most manipulative characters on TV, but knowing he's gone after the horror Eleven endured at his hands is a bit of a relief.
Brenner has cheated death before, so it wasn't out of the realm of possibility for him to pull the wool over our eyes all over again.
The villain was fatally shot as...

This Stranger Things article contains spoilers for all of season 4.
Expectations were high for the Stranger Things season 4 finale.
That’s bound to happen when Netflix splits the penultimate season of its biggest hit into two parts, adjusts its shooting budget to essentially “infinite,” and then spends more than a full month teasing out the epic conclusion to come. The two episodes that make up Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 had a lot to deliver on. And thankfully for fans, those nearly four hours of television mostly succeed.
Like all Stranger Things finales, season 4 episode 9 “The Piggyback” is a cathartic, action-packed spectacle. Unlike the other seasons’ conclusions, however, this finale leaves some questions up in the air. Since the show has one more season to go, “The Piggyback” makes sure it’s setting up Stranger Things‘ last act as much as it concludes this one.
Let’s break down the ending...

This article obviously contains enormous spoilers for Stranger Things season 4.
Pop culture has trained us well to expect some corpses in the season finales of our favorite television shows. When it comes to Stranger Things season 4, however, it was particularly clear that a cast culling was in store.
Not only has Stranger Things not been shy about callously murdering its characters in the past but season 4 almost had to kill off some folks as a matter of pure logistics. It’s well-covered territory that this is the longest Stranger Things season by far with each episode running in excess of 70 minutes and the final two episodes going for an hour and a half and two and a half hours, respectively. A lot of that narrative bloat can be attributed to the show’s overwhelmingly large cast size and the disparate journeys they all go on.
Suffice it to say, fans...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Stranger Things Season 4 “Chapter Eight: Papa.”] Earlier this week, Gaten Matarazzo promised that Stranger Things fans would “learn a lot” in these remaining two episodes of Season 4. Based on this penultimate episode, he wasn’t lying. The larger scope and purpose of the series come into focus across this episode, even if I still question why we needed an hour and a half to get there — and I’m still dreading that 2 hour 30 minute finale. The crux of this episode takes place at the lab in Nevada, where Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) learns the true nature of her past and the real intentions of Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), the man she once called papa. At the end of Vol. 1, we learned that Eleven was responsible for creating Vecna, who it turns out is Jamie Campbell Bower‘s creepy orderly, aka One, aka Henry Creel — “What are we calling him now?...

Warning: This story features spoilers for Stranger Things season four, volume two. We can't be the only ones feeling a little upside down over Stranger Things. While we knew to expect carnage in season four, volume two, we didn't expect to see three fan favorite characters die in the span of about four hours. The first big death came in episode eight, when Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), a.k.a. Papa, was gunned down by Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan's men while trying to escape with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). This was particularly devastating, as we had just gotten Dr. Brenner back after his supposed...

The conclusion to “Stranger Things” Season 4 arrives July 1 in the form of two final episodes, the finale of which has a runtime of over two hours. Combined, the two episodes add up to almost four hours. And while it’s only been a month since Volume 1 came out, you may be in need of a brief recap before diving into the epic conclusion.
The most unforgettable twist in Season 4 so far might be the role of Jamie Campbell Bower’s character in tying everything together, including the long-desired explanation of the mythology behind the Upside Down. The fate of characters like Nancy, who was caught in Vecna’s clutches at the end of Volume I, and Eleven, who went on a mission to regain her telekinetic powers, come next in the threads we expect to be tied at the end of this fourth season. We also can’t forget that...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses several major plot developments in Season 4, Vol. 1 of “Stranger Things,” currently streaming on Netflix.
For Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” Millie Bobby Brown had the rare opportunity to revisit the role that she’s been playing since she was barely 11 years old, by guiding another girl to play an even younger version of the character. Extended flashback sequences set in 1979 — four years before the events of Season 1 of the series — depict Eleven’s time as a captive child in Hawkins Lab with Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine). Since the vast majority of those sequences are seen through the prism of Eleven’s memories, Brown performed most of those scenes. But occasionally, young actor Martie Blair (“The Young and the Restless”) stood-in for the 9 year old version of Eleven, and her face was digitally replaced with Brown’s in post-production.
As the 18-year-old Brown explained to Variety,...

Exclusive: Matthew Modine (Stranger Things) will star in the cycling drama Hard Miles, which is currently in production in Los Angeles and Lone Pine, CA.
The film is based on the true story of the cycling team at Colorado’s Ridge View Academy, which for decades has given at-risk youth a second chance through academic rigor, targeted treatment, competitive sports and leadership. Modine is playing Greg Townsend, who has led the team at Ridge View for the last 30 years.
Ridge View Academy was conceptualized by the Colorado Division of Youth Services in the mid-1990s, as a means of responding to the steady rise of juvenile offenders in the state. The charter school opened its doors in 2001 and has since helped set upwards of 4,300 young men on the right path. 2021 Academy Nicholl Fellow R.J. “Stranger Things” is an Emmy anomaly. The Netflix hit has taken home at least one trophy for each of its first three seasons, including the all-important Best Drama Casting prize in 2017, but it has yet to win an Emmy for any of its actors. Millie Bobby Brown arguably has the best chance to prevail for the just-released “Stranger Things 4,” being that she’s a two-time Best Drama Supporting Actress nominee for playing fan-fave character Eleven, aka Jane Hopper, aka the girl with telepathic and psychokinetic abilities who loves Eggo Waffles. But don’t forget, Brown was actually snubbed the last time the show was eligible in 2020. Can the British superstar rebound at the 2022 Emmys?

"Stranger Things" delivered its darkest, most action-packed installment yet with the first half of season four, which hit Netflix on May 27. The latest season of the sci-fi series provides some concrete answers to lingering mysteries, including a deep dive into Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) traumatic past.
Season four opens with a gory flashback to the Hawkins National Laboratory in 1979, where gifted children like Eleven (born Jane Ives) are being observed and experimented on. The viewers are plunged into an intense massacre at the lab, at the end of which Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) finds Eleven covered in blood and standing in the Rainbow Room among tens of dead bodies.
In a previous scene shortly before Eleven is discovered by Dr. Brenner, he is seen training subject Ten to gain control over his extrasensory perception, which piqued many viewers' interest. We see Ten conversing rather eloquently with Dr. Brenner, even...

This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 4.
The Stranger Things expanded universe, which is comprised of several standalone novels and comics, has some understandable inconsistencies that arise from having disconnected writers working in different media. Most of these are minor or at least can be written off as inconsequential if the television show is given canon precedence. But Eleven’s flashbacks in season 4 completely upend many ideas that prequel readers had about the activities of Dr. Brenner and the subjects of his experiments — in particular, the role of the one known as Six.
Six happens to be the title of a four issue comic series by Jody Houser that released in 2019, just before Stranger Things season 3 dropped on Netflix. It tells the story of Francine, who, because of her uncontrolled ability to see into the future, is recruited into the secret government program run by Dr. Martin Brenner at Hawkins National Laboratory.

The identity of Vecna is one of the most closely guarded secrets of Stranger Things season 4, but the big reveal in the midseason finale is less about the name behind the creature and more about the origin story of Eleven and the opening of the Upside Down, a central mystery of the show. Although many gaps will have to be filled in with speculation, let’s take a closer look at exactly what we know and don’t know about this season’s “big bad.”
The young investigators in Stranger Things season 4 had the same question many viewers probably had about Vecna’s disfiguring murders: why would the demon frame Victor Creel for the death of his family in the ‘50s only to disappear until Chrissy’s murder in 1986? The answer lies with Dr. Martin Brenner and his secret government project...

Stranger Things fans have already waited more than two years for the return of Netflix’s supernatural drama — so what’s a few more months?
Netflix on Friday released a teaser trailer — which will also air during primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics — that combines unforgettable moments from the first three seasons alongside a few fresh glimpses from its highly anticipated return. Oh, and it confirms that Season 4 won’t premiere until (sigh) 2022 (exact date remains Tbd).

“To state the incredibly obvious, it’s been way, way, way, way too long, and it’s coming,” promises “Stranger Things” producer Shawn Levy of the highly anticipated Season 4.
Audiences last saw the residents of Hawkins in 2019 for the epic showdown against the Mind Flayer at the Starcourt Mall. The Season 3 finale closed with the beloved Jim Hopper (David Harbour) seemingly dead, the Byers family leaving town and the Russians’ facility destroyed…at least for now.
“Stranger Things” Season 4 is one of Netflix’s most anticipated titles, and after a delay in production due to the pandemic, Levy says he has spent the last couple of months shooting a large chunk of the season.
“I shot in Lithuania right before the pandemic. We have filmed in Georgia, Lithuania and New Mexico, so suffice to say Season 4 is sprawling,” he says. “It’s visually and narratively very ambitious, much more ambitious than the prior three seasons.

The latest teaser for season four of Stranger Things brings us back to the arc in season two when El finds Kali, another girl who suffered through Dr. Martin Brenner's psychic experiments. In the trailer, we see kids crawling across a rainbow floor and playing chess among other games. A mysterious figure who looks an awful lot like Brenner tells the kids that there's something special planned for them. Then, a voice asks, "Eleven, can you hear me?" The trailer appears to be a flashback, but it could very well be the present day. But one question that you might be wondering is, what happened to the other children at Hawkins Lab?
Let's rewind to episode seven of season two, or "The Lost Sister." Basically, El tracks down Kali, someone who also faced cruel experiments by Brenner's hands. While El can move things around with her mind, Kali has the power to create illusions.

The latest teaser for season four of Stranger Things is officially live, and it gives us a closer look at the dark and twisted Rainbow Room where El (Millie Bobby Brown) spends a portion of her childhood. In the trailer, we see children crawling on the floor over a rainbow and playing various games in a room with a rainbow wall. Enter a figure that looks eerily like Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), the manipulative scientist that El calls "Papa" in the first season. Feel familiar? Rainbows are something we've seen before in Hawkins - in case you've forgotten, here's a little refresher on the Rainbow Room in Stranger Things!
Long story short, the Rainbow Room is a room at the Hawkins Lab where Brenner brought children to play. But Brenner's intentions were far from fun and games - he would run tests on these kids as well. As a child,...
