The Australian Outback is a favorite crucible for filmmakers – its sun-scorched expanses are like a skeleton of stone and dust, an angry terrain, devoid of life or any of the resources necessary to sustain it. Its barren hostility has served as the backdrop for many an immersive production, from David Michod’s relentlessly grim The Rover to George Miller’s post-apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy. Without fail, its sprawl and mystique have imbued films set around or in it with a natural dread, a sense of powerlessness against ancient, inhuman elements.
And Strangerland, Kim Farrant’s charged but deeply flawed drama about parents in crisis, makes effective use of it too. Here, the Outback functions as a creeping fever, lurking and slowly advancing, threatening to overwhelm the European outsiders who don’t belong there. And Catherine and Matthew Parker (Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes) can feel it hot against the back...

Though Nicole Kidman has the movie star charisma to play Gertrude Bell, Grace Kelly and a foil to Paddington, it’s nice to see her return to her Australian roots with the Aussie drama Strangerland. Kim Farrant’s film premiered at this year’s Sundance, and it stars Kidman, Hugo Weaving, and Joseph Fiennes in a story about a mother (Kidman) and a detective (Weaving) looking for her teenage children in a massive desert storm. Here’s the full synopsis:
Newcomers to the remote Australian desert town of Nathgari, Catherine and Matthew Parker’s lives are flung into crisis when they discover their two teenage kids, Tommy and Lily, have mysteriously disappeared just before a massive dust storm hits. With Nathgari eerily smothered in red dust and darkness, the townsfolk join the search led by local cop, David Rae. It soon becomes apparent that something terrible may have happened to Tommy and Lily.

James Bond, one of the most iconic characters to emerge out of the postwar wreckage of Europe, was born in Jamaica. Ian Fleming, a former intelligence officer, first visited in 1943 while the island was still under British rule and built a house he called Goldeneye on the northern coast three years after. It was here that he would write all of his James Bond novels, starting with Casino Royale in 1952, up until The Man With the Golden Gun, which was published after his death in 1964. Matthew Parker’s new book Goldeneye Where Bond Was Born: Ian Fleming’s Jamaica explores the complicated relationship Fleming had with the island as it moved from British colony to independent nation. Here are the ten most interesting things Vulture learned, from Fleming’s terrible habits (70 cigarettes a day!) to how he felt about Sean Connery.Goldeneye was named after a wartime operation. There’s one problem in the gaming world that no developer has yet found a way to rectify. Let’s face it: there’s just not enough anal probing. Or abortion. Obsidian, with their friends from South Park Studios, have managed to change that, although not everybody is going to benefit from the wonders they’ve bestowed on the industry. South Park: The Stick of Truth will come with several small omissions when it releases in Europe, all of them being rather lewd mini-games.
Apparently this list (as published by BT) is so disgusting that even those adults buying the game (which is rated 18+) would be unable to make the rightful decision as to whether or not they’re comfortable with what’s on display. To be fair, out of the context of the show, the items removed would seem a little grisly, and would probably be rightfully taken out.

According to Playbill, the documentary promises “an all-access pass to the behind-the-scenes world of creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone at South Park Studios in Los Angeles through this special documentary, providing an exclusive, insiders look into the making of a ‘South Park’ episode.”
Now, if all that promo hype has more substance than a handful of Cartman’s Cheesy Poofs, this could really turn out to be a big deal for South Park fans, especially for...

They started out as young, plain, paper cut outs, and just 15 seasons later they have become one of the most influential and popular set of kids of all time, with rude behaviour, fantastic parodies, and great underlying messages all playing a huge part within the show. However, after its phenomenal run - one that is now into its 14th year - rumours are suggesting that this iconic series is coming to an end within the next few years, so what better time to recap on our favourite moments; and, most importantly, the reasons we fell in love with that offensive town, nestled deep within Colorado.
13. Kenny’s deaths
Kenny’s ability to resurrect would make Jesus jealous, as every episode - for the first few seasons at least - Kenny died. His deaths were always unexplained, until one day its creators decided to educate us on Kenny's alter ego Mysterion.

When it comes to modern-day satire, Matt Parker and Trey Stone wield the comedic equivalent of the Eye of Sauron. They skewer events, personalities and attitudes with a fearsome precision and, while it is a way to declare that the skewered entity has arrived, you generally don't want to be on the receiving end of their glare.
That's exactly where EA Sports found themselves last night. (This is actually round two of South Park vs. EA, as Parker, Stone and crew parodied EA's best-selling "Tiger Woods" games with a version that featured bloody fisticuffs between Tiger and his now ex-wife Elin Nordegren.) In the episode entitled "Crack Baby Athletic Association," Cartman and some of the other kids plot to start up a, um, very controversial sports league. Aside from the tragic nature of the athletes, there's the idea that Cartman doesn't even want to pay them.

Man, how much does Wednesdays suck for TV viewing? It sucks so much that the only thing on my DVR for Wednesdays are new episodes of “Justified”, still the best show on TV. Now, thankfully, my DVR can finally record something else — brand spanking new episodes of “South Park”! Up first for Matt Parker and Trey Stone? Steve Jobs and his iPad by way of Tom Six’s “The Human Centipede”, in case you haven’t already figured it out by the photo above. Catch the first new episode of “South Park” Season 15 this Wednesday on Comedy Central. Here’s a clip of Steve Jobs introducing his latest and greatest invention to the world: The HumancentiPad! (I’m sure it’ll sell like hotcakes, get a lot of complains, before a version 2.0 is released a few months later and sell even more.) HUMANCENTiPADTags: SOUTHPARKmore…...

The Book of Mormon, which opens on Broadway on Thursday night, is the blisteringly funny, outrageously blasphemous new musical by South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone. Cahir O’Doherty talks to its young breakout star Rory O’Malley, currently stealing the show in the hottest ticket on Broadway. Rory O’Malley, 29, a nice Irish boy from West Cleveland, still looks like the innocent altar boy he once was. And he knows how to play up his clean-cut looks for laughs in The Book of Mormon, the blisteringly funny new musical that opens on Broadway on Thursday night. A show about a pair of mismatched Mormon boys who are sent on an almost certain death mission to Uganda, The Book of Mormon has been six years in the making, and critics are already hailing it as the hottest ticket on Broadway (you may want to book yours now because...

I actually found this clip, from this week's episode of "South Park," a little annoying. Not because it's bad, but because it hits a little too close to home. Screw you, Matt Parker and Trey Stone -- you've reduced something I very much loved into a puddle of its own urine. Inception is smart! And I'm smart for liking it, damnit.

The festival that celebrates the efforts of indie game designers might just be giving folks a peek at next year's hand-crafted darlings. IndieCade's just revealed the 32 titles that will be competing in the dozen award categories. Unlike other award shows, each title will be eligible for any award category. The list is an impressive one--and long, too--full of titles with varied intentions and presentations. To me, the highlights-from the official release-are:
Auditorium (Cipher Prime, USA): Auditorium is an audio puzzle game where you convert light into sound, creating an explosion of orchestral music. Its addictively simple mechanic consists of manipulating icons to deflect light into a target on each level to generate bursts of music. The game has a flexible design, allowing for a range of solutions to each puzzle. Available for PC and Mac, and now iPhone, Auditorium was created by Philadelphia-based Cipher Prime. http://www.playauditorium.com/

Even amidst the depiction-of-Muhammad controversy, the "South Park" creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone didn't miss a beat by plunging ahead with "Crippled Summer," the episode where handicappable Jimmy and Timmy head off to Camp Tardicaca for the summer.
It turns out drug-addicted Towelie has gotten a job at the summer camp by the boys who want to intervene in his life. Oh, "South Park." Towelie's intervention segment is hysterical -- is he actually turning tricks at the municipal pool? "You going swimmin'? Don't forget to bring your towel." Butters crying is also always a plus.
Meanwhile, Jimmy and Timmy head to their camp for special needs kids that includes other special needs cartoons -- Elmer Fudd, Droopy Dog, Porky Pig, Beaky Buzzard, Pete Puma, and Rocky and Mugsy. Brilliant. To find out how it all ends, you can check out the full episode at "South Park's" official website,...

Wait, what? Last night’s “South Park” episode where there was a loud Bleep everytime someone said the word “Muhammad” wasn’t censored on purpose by Matt Parker and Trey Stone for comedic purposes? And that final monologue by Kyle and Jesus also weren’t censored on purpose? Well damn, call me Sally and slap me on the thigh. I’ll admit it, I really did think all that bleeping was on purpose by Parker and Stone, because it made the final Kyle monologue kinda hilarious. Granted, I couldn’t hear a single thing anyone was saying, but I thought that was the point. Apparently I was wrong, because according to the duo, that isn’t the case at all. Parker and Stone put out this statement today in response to the heavily censored episode aired on Wednesday: “In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park we have never...

It's not like "South Park" hasn't made fun of a jillion things in the past, but apparently taking aim at the Islamic prophet Muhammad is a big no-no.
Last week's 200th episode saw the South Park boys poking fun at celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Barbra Streisand - and trying to bring the Prophet Muhammad to their small fictional Colorado town. Here's a trailer:
