Exclusive: This Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards will “celebrate and remember the power of storytelling” at a “challenging” time for the industry, according to the new chair of the 77-year-old body.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline in the days leading up to the London ceremony, Sara Putt, who replaced Krishnendu Majumdar last year, said the awards will partly act as a tonic against the bad times, allowing “a community to come together, network, and be creative and supportive of each other.”
She acknowledged that 2023 was a “challenging year for many in the industry, whether freelancers or small indies,” coming a few months after BAFTA research found one third are considering leaving.
“We [at BAFTA] have many roles to play and it is important when times are hard to celebrate and remember the power of storytelling,” Putt said.

The international production powerhouse has signed a first-look and development deal with Astral Projection, the production company run by the Oscar-winning actress and her Dead Ringers producer Polly Stokes.

In the history of Black leading actresses at prestigious award shows, Halle Berry’s triumph for “Monster’s Ball” at the Oscars stands prominently, while the BAFTAs lack a similar honoree, and the upcoming Sunday ceremony seems unlikely to change that.
This year’s roster of lead actress nominees boasts a diverse array of talents. Vivian Oparah garnered attention for her breakthrough role in the romantic drama “Rye Lane,” alongside Fantasia Barrino’s captivating performance in the musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Also vying for the coveted title are Oscar nominated actresses Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), with Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), who’s recognized in the best picture category as a producer. Speculation abounds among pundits and prognosticators, all anticipating a win for one of the three Oscar-nominated women, setting the stage for another year where Black actresses may find themselves overlooked.

“It felt like we were reconnecting after a long time,” To Leslie star Andrea Riseborough said today of working with Domhnall Gleeson on Alice & Jack, Channel 4 & PBS Masterpiece’s upcoming romantic drama that premiered at Mipcom Cannes.
Riseborough and Gleeson have worked plenty together down the years including on Never Let Me Go and Shadow Dancer, but hadn’t partnered on a project for some years until the series.
During an Alice & Jack Q&a this evening at Mipcom Cannes, chaired by Deadline’s Joe Utichi, Riseborough said it “felt like were reconnecting after a long time” and this had been obvious from the first scene that the pair did together.
“It was so catapulted and so real,” she added. “It’s strange to be both young and old with someone but I’ve done that with Domhnall and our relationship kind of reflects Alice and Jack’s meeting.

Exclusive: Creatives behind Alice & Jack, which stars Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough in the latter’s first role since the To Leslie controversy, have spotlighted how they wanted the Channel 4/Masterpiece TV series to feel like an indie film.

After 18 years at BAFTA, Krishnendu Majumdar is having trouble switching off.
It’s been almost two months since the media executive, who recently won a BAFTA for producing the Kate Winslet-led Channel 4 drama “I Am Ruth,” finished his three-year term as chair of the British Academy, handing over the reins to agency boss Sara Putt. Krishnendu Majumdar, who also runs BAFTA-winning I Am Ruth indie Me + You Productions, said he has many friends and colleagues striking in the UK and is aware of many affected productions.
“I want the strike to end,” he said. “There needs to be a coming together of writers, actors and studios to find a fair equitable solution going forwards because it’s costing hundreds of millions of dollars a day.”
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today, Majumdar, who is ending a three-year term, pointed to BAFTA’s diversity work, which has seen it uproot its nominations process across the last couple of years and support various all-year-round initiatives. He left BAFTA in June and was replaced by Sara Putt.

Andrea Riseborough and Domnhall Gleeson are to star in a Channel 4 drama series created by Mad Men’s Victor Levin.
The duo are leading Alice & Jack, the first major casting for Riseborough since the To Leslie Oscar controversy earlier this year.
The pair play the title characters in what distributor Fremantle described as a “love story for the ages.” Logline adds: “When they first meet they’re bound by a connection so powerful it seems nothing can break it, but will their path lead them to a place of happiness and togetherness? Or will life and their own emotional complexities get in the way.”
Alice & Jack brings together major production companies in Academy Award-nominated Groundswell Productions, De Maio Entertainment, I Am Ruth maker Me + You Productions and Fremantle. Fremantle is also handling global sales.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has shared its latest membership data, revealing the makeup of individuals who vote across its awards.
The figures, released alongside a letter to members from chair Krishnendu Majumdar, state that as of May 2023, the current BAFTA membership comprises a 42:58 female-male split, with 16% of members from underrepresented ethnic groups, 7% with a disability, and 12% identifying as Lgbtqia+.
The overall number of global BAFTA members has now risen to over 11,500, with over 2,500 industry professionals from across film, games, and television joining since 2020, BAFTA reported. In his adjoining letter, Majumdar welcomed the 2,500 new members and praised the organization’s efforts to open up the range of its members but concluded that much more needs to be done to address disparities.

Noel Clarke has spoken publicly about why he dropped his lawsuit against BAFTA over a Guardian article accusing him of sexual harassment and bullying. Within hours of the article’s publication in April 2021, BAFTA suspended the actor, writer and director who had received a prize for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema from the org just weeks earlier.
Clarke launched the defamation claim last spring, on the one year anniversary of the expose being published. As well as listing The Guardian and BAFTA as defendants he included journalists Sirin Kale and Lucy Osborne (who wrote the article), then-bafta chair Krishnendu Majumdar, then-bafta CEO Amanda Berry, performers’ union Equity, Conde Nast and a handful of other individuals linked to the piece.
Last September, however, he dropped the claims against all the defendants except The Guardian. In a new interview on YouTube with Zeze Millz, Clarke explained why. “I did that because they just,...

“Here we go again.” That’s what I thought to myself as it slowly but surely became evident that, once again, the BAFTAs were going to end with every single winner being white. Cue the exasperated sighs.
In the wake of the first trending #BAFTAsSoWhite hashtag eight years ago, BAFTA made a pledge to review its nominations process. And even as recently as 2020, BAFTA chairman Krishnendu Majumdar committed to producing “meaningful and sustainable progress” to move towards a more inclusive and diverse awards and wider industry. A groundbreaking diversity review made a sweeping number of changes that have inserted jury involvement across the performance and directing categories to ensure a diverse group of nominees. But on Sunday night, the results spoke for themselves.
Let’s get this out of the way: no one is saying someone should win solely because of their race, and we’re not here to argue...

London, Feb 20 (Ians) German anti-war drama ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ dominated the BAFTA Awards in London on Sunday night with a record-breaking seven wins, including for Best Director, Best Film and Best Film Not in the English Language, reports ‘Variety’.
The tally means the World War One epic now holds the record for a film not in the English language. The previous record was held by the 1988 Giuseppe Tomatore film ‘Cinema Paradiso’, which won five BAFTAs.
Colin Farrell-starrer ‘The Banshees Of Inisherin’ won the second largest number of awards of the night, including both supporting actor categories with wins for Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon (who emerged as the correct winner after fellow nominee Carey Mulligan’s name was initially called in error), ‘Variety’ adds.
Writer and director Martin Mcdonagh also won for Original Screenplay and Outstanding British Film, although his swipe at the film’s producer...

All Quiet on the Western Front became the big winner tonight at BAFTA, taking not just the awards for Best Film and Best Director, but a total of 7 prizes out of its 14 nominations.
Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin was next with four wins, including Best British Film, and both Supporting performance prizes. It tied with Elvis, which won four awards, including Best Actor for Austin Butler. But longstanding awards front-runner Everything Everywhere All At Once failed to capitalize on the success it has engendered in the U.S., winning only one award for Best Editing from 10 nominations.
Early in the evening, after winning the prize for Film Not in the English language, All Quiet director Edward Berger reflected on his work experience for James Schamus and James Hope’s company, Good Machine, and their production of Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility: “In 1994, I booked plane tickets for Emma Thompson,...
