BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry is leaving her post in 2022 after a 25-year tenure, the awards body announced today.
BAFTA Chief Operating Officer Kevin Price has also announced he will leave in September 2022 after 20 years working alongside Berry.
“In 2023 I will have been at BAFTA for 25 years. When I first joined BAFTA I honestly thought I would stay for three or four years, but my passion, dreams and ambition for the organisation just kept growing. As we approach BAFTA’s 75th anniversary next year I have reflected on what I, Kevin and the truly brilliant team at BAFTA have achieved, and it feels like the right time to plan to pass on the mask,” said Berry.
Berry first joined BAFTA in 1998 and became chief executive in 2000. She was instrumental in the £34M redevelopment of the org’s London HQ, and its proliferation abroad, with branches in Los Angeles, New York, Glasgow and Cardiff.

Netflix was in fashion this week as it wined and dined the cream of the U.K.’s rising talent, including BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits. The streaming giant teamed with Vogue for a dinner at Soho nightspot Kettners, hosted by its London-based VP of originals, Anne Mensah, and Edward Ennuinful, editor-in-chief of the British edition of the fashion bible.
Netflix has partnered with BAFTA on its Breakthrough Brits talent scheme, and is pushing deeper into local originals as it looks to the international business as a key growth-driver. Winning over the U.K.’s best writers, actors, directors, and producers is part of the plan, not least as it tees up productions that will shoot at Shepperton Studios, its massive new production hub near London.
“You guys are the people who literally keep our lights on – creatively and figuratively,” Mensah told the assembled talent as they sat down to dinner after a drinks reception.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the first winners of its new talent-cultivation program in China, including a young director, an up-and-coming actress, and a line producer on a $127-million-grossing romcom.
Five Chinese artists were named Tuesday as the inaugural honorees of BAFTA’s Breakthrough China program. Among them is young director Bai Xue, whose first feature, “The Crossing,” grossed $1.4 million (RMB9.9 million) in March, and her producer He Bin, who is also an audio engineer. Line producer Ye Ting, who worked on last year’s box-office hit romantic comedy “How Long Will I Love U,” actress and director Bonnie Chen, and games producer Guan Dan, who worked on the full-length live-action interactive work “The Invisible Guardian,” were also selected for the program.
Over the next year, BAFTA will support the five honorees to “build, develop and continue their careers” via meetings, events and introductions in the U.

Killing Eve won best drama series at last year’s BAFTA TV Awards but the Phoebe Waller-Bridge-created series seems to have had an even bigger impact on the event after organizers unveiled a formal rule change to allow U.S.-funded series to enter UK categories.
Last year, the BBC America drama found its way to pick up 14 nominations after The British Academy of Film and Television Arts bent its own rules to allow the series, produced by UK indie Sid Gentle Films.
Now, BAFTA has changed the rules meaning that “UK programs” will no longer be required to premiere in the UK to be eligible for UK production categories. Series must still be initiated and developed in the UK with creative control residing in the UK, which Killing Eve was deemed to have done. The move comes as more and more British producers are being commissioned directly by U.

BAFTA has undertaken a major renovation of its London headquarters that will double the building’s capacity and increase space devoted to the British academy’s programs to promote skills training and new talent.
Work has already begun on the $31 million overhaul, which is expected to take two years. In the interim, BAFTA will relocate its home base to the building next door. (Staff offices are around the corner and will be unaffected by the renovation.)
The expanded headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, right by London’s famed Piccadilly Circus, will include an entire floor dedicated to its educational and new-talent programs. The extra space should allow the organization to double its charitable activities, including helping more than 80,000 people a year develop careers in the creative industries. It should also generate new income to expand BAFTA’s programs nationally and internationally, the academy said.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has revealed a £25M ($30M) plan to “transform” its London headquarters at 195 Piccadilly.
According to the UK org, the redevelopment, designed by Benedetti Architects, will double the building’s capacity, install state-of-the-art technology and create a floor devoted to BAFTA’s learning and new talent programmes.
Work on the project has already begun, with a projected completion date of summer 2021. BAFTA says the new space will allow BAFTA to double its charitable work to develop careers in the industry and also generate additional income for new projects.
Donors from across the film, games and TV industries, together with individual philanthropists and trusts and foundations, are supporting the new development. It has also received a grant from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund. More than 70% of the funds have already been raised, and BAFTA is actively fundraising to meet its target of £25M.

BAFTA said the partnership with the streaming giant will help facilitate expansion of its “Breakthrough” initiative globally, and the partners will work to identify overseas talent in new territories. This year’s scheme is open to Brits residing in the U.K. and the U.S. In the future, the intention is to widen the list of qualifying countries, and possibly to broaden the whole program to go beyond just talented Brits, a BAFTA spokesman told Variety.

Leading international cinema chain Vue, one of the UK and Europe’s biggest operators, has sent an open letter to BAFTA Chief Executive Amanda Berry criticizing the organization for awarding four prizes to Netflix’s Roma. Scroll down for the letter in full.
Vue founder and chairman Tim Richards spells out why he thinks BAFTA broke its own rules by making “made for TV” film Roma awards eligible this year and he threatens to pull future support for the awards “unless the Academy board reconsiders its eligibility criteria.” Alfonso Cuaron’s drama won four BAFTAs earlier this month including Best Film.
Richards says, “BAFTA, the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and major film festivals should continue to differentiate between a ‘made for TV’ movie and a first run feature film with a full theatrical release, as they have for the last 100 years.”

Tim Richards, the founder and chief executive of Vue International, one of the largest cinema chains in Europe, has slammed the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for awarding prizes to Netflix’s “Roma.”
Alfonso Cuaron’s black-and-white film, which is also up for several Oscars, won four BAFTAs at the awards ceremony in London on Feb. 10.
In an open letter released Monday to BAFTA chief executive Amanda Berry, Richards said that “BAFTA has not lived up to its usual high standards this year in choosing to endorse and promote a ‘made for TV’ film that audiences were unable to see on a big screen.”
He said that Netflix had made at best a “token effort” to screen “Roma” theatrically in Britain, “screening it to less than 1% of the U.K. market solely because it wanted an award.”
“How could BAFTA let this happen?” Richards asked in the letter.

For more than 50 years, the public has been haunted by the Zodiac Killer — a serial killer who murdered at least five people in the Northern California area in the early 1960s to the late 1970s. For years, the identity of the killer — who earned his moniker from the menacing letters and mysterious cryptograms he had sent to the local newspapers — has intrigued the public, who has never been any closer to identifying the killer despite decades dedicated to cracking the case. But now, law enforcement is hoping to finally get some answers thanks to DNA websites, where people often submit their own DNA to find relatives and determine their ancestry. Vallejo police detective Terry Poyser confirmed to the Sacramento Bee that they sent two envelopes from letters written by the killer to a lab for in-depth DNA analysis. They’re hoping to have similar success as they did in the...

After pleading guilty to charges of rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder, the 53-year-old committed suicide in his cell one month into his life sentence. With that nightmare past them, we can't help but wonder how the Cleveland kidnapping victims — Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Georgina “Gina” DeJesus — are doing now. Michelle is back in the headlines these days on account of her newly released, second memoir, Life After Darkness: Finding Healing and Happiness After the Cleveland Kidnappings. According to People magazine, she changed her name to Lillian Rose Lee — inspired by her favorite flowers. The now-37-year-old, who was abducted when she was 20, is an artist, author, and speaker. The Shape Of Water stakes its claim but this is the most British line-up in years.
Will The Shape Of Water sweep the board?
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water scored 12 nominations and is the most nominated film at the Baftas since The King’s Speech achieved 14 nods in 2011.
There were also resounding performances by Darkest Hour with nine nominations, including best film, and Blade Runner 2049 with eight nominations, including a best director berth for Denis Villeneuve.
Darkest Hour had only managed a single Golden Globe nomination but the combination of its stirring theme and Gary Oldman’s bravura performance proved a hit with voters within the British academy. Meanwhile, Blade Runner 2049, shutout by the Golden Globes, was in danger of becoming an awards afterthought but the sci-fi has now scored as many Bafta nominations as Ridley Scott’s 1982 original.

Since 2013, Michelle Knight has been free from the chains and torture she endured for more than a decade with fellow kidnapping survivors Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus.
But navigating her freedom has been filled with multiple struggles, which she plans to recount in her new book: Life After Darkness: Finding Healing and Happiness After Tragedy: A Memoir of Life After the Cleveland Kidnappings.
Knight — who changed her name to Lillian Rose Lee — will discuss her battle with addiction, the truth about her relationship with Berry and DeJesus and how she has adjusted to life after escaping Ariel Castro’s house of horrors.

Stephen Fry
Stephen Fry is to step down as host of the Bafta Film Awards.
Fry, who has fronted the ceremony 12 times, said it was “only right to stand down and let others take the Baftas on to new heights and greater glories”.
A replacement will be named on Tuesday [Jan 9], when this year’s nominees are revealed.
Fry first hosted the awards in 2001. He had a break from hosting duties between 2007-11, when Jonathan Ross took over.
The 2018 awards will be held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 18 February 2018 and broadcast on BBC One. For the second year, dance troupe Cirque de Soleil will perform a piece during the ceremony.
Fry said: “Every one of the twelve Bafta film award ceremonies that I had the privilege of hosting has a place in my memory. The mixture of glamour, glory, drama and - occasionally...
