David Zellner in Ghostbox CowboyGhostbox Cowboy was an under-the-radar late-2018 release. It had runs in La, Sf, and NYC. It’s been available to rent VOD since Christmas. But outside the rave from Glenn Kenny in the New York Times, its profile has been limited to festival blurbs (mostly positive) from Tribeca, where it premiered last May, an example of how hard it is to get people to watch a movie. And this movie is a tough sell, sure, with its indie names (David Zellner and Robert Longstreet) barely recognizable in wigs and dentures half the time; with its hyper-digital look (no Alexa here); with its anxiety-inducing sound design and low rumbling score. But it’s one of the best American films about the precarious state of capitalism–specifically, its influence on modern China and the pie-eyed gringos intent on wringing free some riches for themselves. I sat down with director,...

“We wanted to show how a chicken dealer (Lam’s actual profession at the time) lives. The whole film unfolded in a bizarre way because we were overwhelmed by incidents in the improvisation. Lam’s car had no brakes, no headlights, and no registration. It was really a patience-mobile that forced us to stop when we least expected. The introduction of the character of the devil in the bush came up in Lam’s reflections when we broke down. ‘Let’s not stop here,’ he said every time the car refused to go on, ‘there are devils here!’” —Jean Rouch, from Cine-Ethnography “I’m not a poet, I’m an entrepreneur”—Jimmy Van Horn Eminently practical people, when Americans do diaspora it’s usually a kind of one-stop shopping—aiming to hit both sides of the same coin—hedonism and capitalism. Ghostbox Cowboy might be John Maringouin‘s first foray into the narrative form, but there is a lineage to his previous docu features; best known for his 2009 documentary Big River Man, about a man’s attempt to swim the entirety of the Amazon river. Ghostbox Cowboy stars David Zellner as Jimmy Van Horn, half of the Zellner brothers duo that directed the indie hit Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and more recently Damsel which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Ghostbox is a satire about an idealistic entrepreneur who travels to China seeking investment for his product that allows one to speak with ghosts, though it becomes clear that he’s in way over his head.…...

Damn Sell: Maringouin’s No-Frills Pynchonian Mind-blowing Masterpiece
Unfolding like a Thomas Pynchon novel, John Maringouin’s latest oeuvre follows an American inventor-of-sorts who gets taken for a ride in an exotic cityscape. Like its characters, this fiction debut manipulates the viewer and takes them on an outlandish trip through China’s underground. There’s a raw, rough around the edges, kinetic energy that tonally matches the Safdie Bros.’ Good Time sans relying on violence to maintain suspense. Altogether disorienting, Ghostbox Cowboy makes for a trippy, mind-blowing experience.
Filmmaker David Zellner plays Jimmy Van Horn, an overly optimistic dolt with a new product called Ghostr that claims to provide a communication link with dead loved ones.…...

Wild West capitalism hits the Far East with a vengeance in documentarian John Maringouin’s adventuresome first narrative feature, “Ghostbox Cowboy.” This original if sometimes befuddling vision blurs the line between fiction and documentary elements, conventional storytelling and improvisational collage, all to oft-bracing effect. Starring indie-cinema regulars David Zellner and Robert Longstreet as Yank hustler-entrepreneurs wading into the financially frenetic waters of the People’s Republic, it’s a freewheeling absurdist parable that might be dubbed “Fear and Loathing in the Chinese Economic Miracle.”
Though by its very nature somewhat uneven and unwieldy, what Maringouin has wrought here has a kind of exhilarating chaos to it, something comparable to relatively few prior films. Alexsey German’s just-restored 1998 “Khrustalvoy, My Car!” and the prime-time Fellini of “8 1/2” come to mind as similar phantasmagorias of modernity’s institutions run amuck.
Appropriately for the era it depicts, “Ghostbox” has a much more jittery, digital aesthetic than those movies,...

"We're going to pitch our product..." Dark Star Pictures has released an official trailer for a wild, indie, sci-fi western, dark comedy, "morality tale" titled Ghostbox Cowboy, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about a dullard Texas entrepreneur who reinvents himself as a cowboy in China's tech wild west, but finds himself at the mercy of corrupt American expats looking to reinvent him once more. Described as an "excitingly fresh, complex perspective on China's economic growth – and the gold rush mentality it inspires." The film stars David Zellner as Jimmy, along with Robert Longstreet, J.R. Cazet, Nicholas Grgich, Specialist, Vincent Xie, and Nan Lin. This looks very, very strange and wacky and trippy as all hell. And oddly raw and unrefined, which may not be for everyone. You need to see. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for John Maringouin's Ghostbox Cowboy,...

Describing “Ghostbox Cowboy” in one or two sentences is almost impossible. And even if it was possible, the description wouldn’t be sufficient enough to fully encapsulate all the craziness that is seen in the film.
Perhaps the best way to dive headfirst into the world of “Ghostbox Cowboy,” short of actually watching the film, is with the new trailer. The footage seen gives viewers a chance to experience the wild, darkly comedic world of filmmaker John Maringouin’s narrative film debut.

Americans have always been uniquely susceptible to a gold rush mentality, the promise of easy riches just over the horizon. This idea first lured people across the Atlantic, then across the prairies, and now in the 21st century, across the Pacific to China. “Ghostbox Cowboy,” the feature-length drama debut of documentarian John Maringouin, tells the story of one such fortune-hunting American, Jimmy Van Horn as he travels to Shenzen with a few bitcoins, the prototype of a ghost-communication device, and limitless dreams.

As the Tribeca Film Festival wraps up its latest edition, many of the movies screening across the two-weekend festival have yet to find distribution. This is common at many festivals, and there’s no question that buyers have paid close attention to the hype around some of the festival’s more promising titles. Still, it’s a competitive marketplace out there, so we’re always eager to weigh in. Here are the best 2018 Tribeca movies that still deserve U.S. distribution.

Lodged between the meat market of the Sundance Film Festival every January and the prestige of the Cannes Film Festival every May, the Tribeca Film Festival is an odd duck. Each and every April for the last 16 years, Tribeca has showcased a wife variety of (mostly) independent movies, many of which struggle to see the light of day. Still, there’s always a gem or two in the lineup, and even the occasional Academy Award nominee. With screenings for press beginning before this month is out, now is a solid time to take a look at some of what Tribeca has to offer for 2018. First up, it’s worth noting some of the prior Tribeca titles that have struck my fancy. Last year, it was the grouping of Blame, The Boy Downstairs, and especially Flower that highlighted a rather week lineup. The year before, 2016 featured Between Us, Dean, Don’t Think Twice,...

Now in its eighth year, the American Film Festival offers a unique perspective on recent developments in U.S. indie filmmaking. That’s because it happens in Poland, staged at the stylish Kino Nowe Horyzonty film center in Wroclaw, also home to the summer New Horizons festival, which has more of a European tilt.
Although the festival, which recently concluded, surveys many favorites from Sundance and South by Southwest, the curation doesn’t merely transpose selections to a new setting. It imports a lively assortment of filmmakers, as well, and creates a cozy, engaged atmosphere more akin to the communal vibe of the Maryland Film Festival. Indeed, to rub shoulders in a crowd that included Jody Lee Lipes, Noel Wells, Dustin Guy Defa, Nathan Silver, producer Mike Ryan, Jessica Oreck and Mike Ott is to experience a deep dive into the creative bustle of current indie ferment.

Nate Parker's racial drama "The Birth of a Nation" took both the top honors of the grand jury prize and the audience award at this year's Sundance Film Festival which held its ceremony tonight.
The film, a drama about the life of Nat Turner and the slave rebellion he led in antebellum Virginia, made headlines several days ago when it was acquired by Fox Searchlight for a record-shattering $17.5 million.
It also marks the fourth year in a row where one film has taken the top two prizes in U.S. dramatic competition following 2013's "Fruitvale Station," 2014's "Whiplash" and last year's "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl". The U.S. documentary grand jury prize was awarded to "Weiner," a behind-the-scenes portrayal of disgraced politician Anthony Weiner's mayoral campaign.

Time, Inc. is about to drop one of its first major online video projects. As part of its larger digital video strategy, the publishing giant is releasing its anthology-style documentary series New Orleans, Here & Now across multiple digital platforms on August 27, 2015, nearly ten years after the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Produced alongside Killer Films, Field Office Films, and production and distribution company Rampante, New Orleans, Here & Now contains six different short films centered on the lives of individuals living in the post-Katrina Louisiana city. For example, one of the documentary’s episodes will cover the story of an oyster farmer and his decades-long quest to build a boat, while another segment will show four high school seniors, who were only eight when Katrina hit, preparing for graduation.

Along with Jonathan Caouette, Ingrid Kopp, Thom Powers, Esther Robinson, Morgan Spurlock, and John Vanco I’ll be co-hosting a benefit screening of John Maringouin’s Big River Man on Tuesday, September 4, at the IFC Center at 7:30Pm. All proceeds will go towards the filmmaker’s surgery fund and an urgently needed lung operation. Additionally, IFC will be donating an additional 50% of the box towards the fund as well as 100% of all income from membership sales and renewals purchased that evening. I’ve posted about Maringouin’s situation previously, and, with days left, the fund still needs monies to reach its $60,000 goal, which will enable a down payment on Maringouin’s surgery.

This special screening of the documentary Big River Man is a benefit for it’s maker, John Maringouin, who is in desperate need of surgery immediately! Typical of the American health care system, Maringouin is currently without insurance, but is in dire need of an operation to remove a tumor from his lung.
If you cannot attend this screening, but want to donate to the John Maringouin Surgery Fund, please visit their fundraising site at Give Forward. Back when we selected filmmaker John Maringouin for our 25 New Faces list in 2006, we knew he had crazy, gonzo talent. His father-son reunion pic, Running Scared is, as I wrote at the time, “a true epic in the fucked-up family doc genre.” Three years after Running Scared, Maringouin made an even bigger impact with Big River Man, a hilarious and heartfelt tale of adventure and human endurance.
But now, as I sadly learned in an email from filmmaker Stephen Kijak, Maringouin is fighting his own medical battle and he needs our support. I’ll let Kijak explain:
My friend, celebrated documentarian John Maringouin, thought he was suffering from chronic asthma for nearly a decade. His insurance company had recently blocked his numerous efforts to get a Cat scan and other advanced diagnostics when his condition worsened. Having recently dumped them in pursuit of better coverage, John learned that in fact,...

#76. When the World's on Fire - James Clauer His unforgettable, unclassifiable and somewhat off-putting (the animal cruelty aspect) 13-minute short (The Aluminum Fowl) travelled from Park City to Rotterdam and made a splash on the Croisette back in 2006. I'm looking forward to what kind of world James Clauer (see pic above) is looking to explore and the visual treatment of his text with his feature debut, which is backed by those who produced by the same folk who backed Michael Tully's Septien (Sundance - 2011). What we do know is that we think that this might have been based on a 2007 short film and besides that --- nada. Look for When the World's on Fire to be a strong contender for the New Frontier sidebar. Gist: Coming soon. Michael Tully's independent film Septien will open in New York on July 6.
The release will be handled by IFC Midnight, a branch of the American distributor IFC. The theatrical release will take place at the IFC Center in New York. If you don't live in the Big Apple, you may view the film on demand via IFC Midnight.
Here's the script according to the press release.
Eighteen years after disappearing without a trace, Cornelius Rawlings returns to his family's farm. While his parents are long deceased, Cornelius's brothers continue to live in isolation on this forgotten piece of land. Ezra is a freak for two things: cleanliness and Jesus. Amos is a self-taught artist who fetishizes sports and Satan. Although back home, Cornelius is still distant. In between challenging strangers to one-on-one games, he huffs and drinks the days away. The family's high-school sports demons show up one day...

Director: Michael Tully Writer: Michael Tully Starring: Michael Tully, Robert Longstreet, Onur Tukel, Rachel Korine, Mark Darby Robinson, John Maringouin, Jim Willingham Eighteen years after disappearing without a trace, a man who looks remarkably like Jesus Christ donning sunglasses and a tan hoodie returns to his family's farm. The parents of the bearded man -- whose name is Cornelius (Michael Tully) -- died a while ago; but his two siblings, Ezra (Robert Longstreet) and Amos (Onur Tukel), are still living as eccentric slackers on the family’s backwoods property. Ezra, the more effeminate brother, plays the role of the doting mother of the household, dutifully cooking, cleaning, praying and basically just taking care of things. Amos is the token artist of the Rawlings clan; he wishes that he could be gay but he thinks his gayness is too repressed because their father was homophobic and now he is just too old to become gay.

After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.
Here is the full list:

As you no doubt noticed, Uncle Creepy has been busily bringing you early news and photos from several of the recently announced films that will be playing at Sundance 2011, both in competition and out. But he hasn't quite covered everything yet so here's a list of all the even slightly genre-related offerings that are a part of the upcoming Sundance film festival (running January 20-30).
In Competition:
On the Ice (Director and screenwriter: Andrew Okpeaha MacLean) - On the snow-covered Arctic tundra, two teenagers try to get away with murder. Cast: Josiah Patkotak, Frank Qutuq Irelan, Teddy Kyle Smith, Adamina Kerr, Sierra Jade Sampson. (More thriller than horror, we still thought it worth mentioning).
Take Shelter (Director and screenwriter: Jeff Nichols) - A working-class husband and father questions whether his terrifying dreams of an apocalyptic storm signal something real to come or the onset of an inherited mental illness he's feared his whole life.

Following yesterday's announcement of the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the second part of their lineup, which includes the more starry-eyed Premieres section, the best-of-fests Spotlight section, the sure-to-be-culty Park City at Midnight section, the low-budget Next section, and the more experimental New Frontier section (an extension of New Frontier Program, the collection of video art installations which has already been noted here for playing James Franco's dramatic multimedia examination of "Three's Company.")
In addition to the return of filmmakers like "Chuck & Buck"'s Miguel Arteta, "Clockwatchers" director Jill Sprecher, Kevin Smith and "The Station Agent"'s Thomas McCarthy to Park City, the festival will also welcome less frequent or first-time Sundance attendees such as Hollywood types Al Pacino ("Son of No One") and Tobey Maguire ("The Details") and mumblecore alums Joe Swanberg ("Uncle Kent," which announced it's been...

Michael Tully (Septien), Todd Rohal (The Catechism Cataclysm) and Lucky McKee (The Woman featuring Amazonian beauty Pollyanna McIntosh) are seven of the eight filmmakers who'll be premiering their latest films in a Park City at Midnight Section. On paper, this year's eight selected titles is perhaps the best since I've been going to the fest and shows that should be quick sell outs are Hobo with A Shotgun, Corman’s World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel and the international preem for Troll Hunter will remind some of The Blair With Project from several years back. Well, yesterday, we saw the full list of films in-competition; today, we get to see those titles that have been selected for Sundance 2011′s out-of-competition lineup.
And as I said with yesterday’s post, I’ll be going over the complete list, highlighting titles that need to be, taking into consideration this blog’s specific interests. The only title that immediately stands out is Brit John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses, which MsWOO positively reviewed, after seeing it at the London Film Festival in October. Read her review Here.
But look for future posts profiling any other titles I deem worthy. I’ve applied for press credentials to attend next year’s festival. I won’t know until the 23rd of this month, whether I’ve been granted press access or not. If I am, I will attend the festival; and if I’m not, well, I probably won’t.

Well, if the Competition titles at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival don't generate any early year Oscar buzz, I think it's safe to say the Out of Competition titles will. Several films that have already been seen and positively reviewed can be found in the fest's Spotlight Line-Up along with a batch of anticipated hopefuls in the Premiere Section.
Beginning with the festival's premieres, Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt) is bringing Cedar Rapids to Park City where it will debut before it hits theaters only a couple weeks later on February 11. "Big Love" co-producers, Jill and Karen Sprecher are bringing an impressive cast for their crime drama The Convincer. Jacob Aaron Estes's The Details, which was shot only a few miles from my house in the Queen Anne district of Seattle, arrives with Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney and Tobey Maguire in tow.

Wednesday, the 2011 Sundance Film Festival announced the 58 films in four categories [1] that would be eligible for awards. Today, they've announced the next slice of their line up - 57 out of competition films in the Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. This is generally where you get many of the bigger name projects and this year is no exception. We already knew [2] that Kevin Smith's Red State would be on the list, but there's also Tom McCarthy's new film Win Win, Morgan Spurlock's documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, the highly buzzed-about Submarine, Fantastic Fest darling I Saw the Devil as well as Hobo With a Shotgun and a whole bunch more including films with Al Pacino, Tobey Maguire, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Paul Rudd and others. As we said yesterday, the announcement of the movies playing the 2011 Sundance Film Festival is like looking into our film futures.

Filmmaker John Maringouin, the man behind last year's epic swimming-of-the-Amazon doc "Big River Man," shot the surreal video below while in the security line of the Oklahoma City Airport on Tuesday, where a wheelchair-bound blond woman sat in her underwear petting a dog and waiting to be searched by the Tsa. The woman, whose name is Tammy Banovac, provided an explanation to The Oklahoman:
Tuesday night Banovac said she chose to wear her underwear because of an unpleasant experience two weeks ago at airport security. She is typically hand-searched at airports because she uses a wheelchair, she said, and she felt violated by the more invasive searches employed at airports recently. "If it happened anywhere else, it would have been sexual assault."
The video's already gone viral, for obvious reasons -- nearly naked lady -- but the most telling aspect is how hard everyone else in line seems to be trying not to look,...

Director: John Maringouin Starring: Martin Strel, Borut Strel He's an overweight 53 year old man who used to be a professional gambler. He now teaches flamenco guitar for a living. He regularly drinks and drives, eats horse burgers, and spends his days in underground caves learning how to think like an animal. He is also 'the world's last superhero'. Meet Martin Strel, aka Big River Man. Strel is hardly the most typical of heroes, but as far as documentary subjects go he's a fine choice. Having taught himself to swim at the age of 6, Martin made the decision to become a marathon swimmer in his mid-30s, and has since set numerous world records. You wouldn't know it to look at him. His gut is large, and his thirst seemingly unquenchable - Strel drinks two bottles of wine a day whilst swimming, and much more besides when he's on dry land.
