The widow of Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill — who died in Feb. 2020 following a bout with pneumonia that was posthumously suspected to be Covid-19 — penned an open letter to Spotify slamming the streaming service for ostensibly choosing Joe Rogan’s vaccine misinformation over Neil Young’s music.
“If my beloved husband, Andy Gill, hadn’t died at the start of the pandemic, he’d have strong and clear feelings about your decision to remove Neil Young’s music in favor of a podcast that has spread anti-vax misinformation,” Catherine Mayer...

Warpaint has released “Lilys,” an original song that follows their 2016 album and last year’s single “The Brakes.” Produced by Sam Petts-Davies, the lush, ethereal track appears in recent HBO series Made for Love.
Singer/guitarist Theresa Wayman told NME that “Lilys” is actually a first glimpse of the band’s next album.
“The HBO show wanted to use it and so that made us finish it faster,” Wayman told NME. “And then the label heard it and were like, ‘Actually, we want to put this out not just have...

The members of Gang of Four would likely be the first to tell you that you do not need an extravagant Gang of Four box set. They’re the ones who released a 45 sarcastically titled “To Hell With Poverty” and backed it up with “Capital (It Fails Us Now),” a lampoon about a newborn baby reaching for its credit card. They skewered advertising culture on “I Found That Essence Rare” and quipped, “The problem of leisure, what to do for pleasure, ideal love a new purchase” on “Natural’s Not in It.

“We of the Rhcp family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed,” the band wrote on Instagram. “Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA. He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between.

In the late Seventies, when punk and disco were still new and subversive, Gang of Four smartly fused the two for a hard-hitting yet danceable sound, which the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol gleefully mined for gold records in the Aughts. But Gang of Four’s members never stopped experimenting and continued the band in fits and starts ever since. The one constant through line back to their landmark 1979 album, Entertainment!, were the rough-hewn riffs of founding guitarist Andy Gill, who died in February, likely an early coronavirus casualty.

The expected anger and outrage at the Recording Academy failed to materialize at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards, undoubtedly because the audience was drained by the tragic death that morning of Kobe Bryant.
But television viewers voted with their feet, tuning out the broadcast, which largely lacked sizzle. Now we can look forward to the inevitable quiet settlement of the messy divorce between former CEO Deborah Dugan and the organization she briefly led. And the Oscars performance by Billie Eilish, who dominated the trophy take-homes.
This week in music:
Grammys Final Ratings: Cue Sad Trombone Sound: The Grammy Awards hit a new low in the key advertiser demographic, pulling in 5.4 among adults 18-49 and 18.7 million viewers. While not reaching the all-time audience low of 2006’s 17 million, the 2019 Grammys were down 6% from the TV audience that tuned in for the 61st annual Grammys.

Hollywood has a new hero – legendary stuntman Jack Gill, who stood on his roof with a fire hose, surrounded by flames, battling to save his home in Agoura Hills, just across the road from the Paramount Ranch, where its famed Western Town film set burned to the ground in the deadly California wildfires inferno. And after he saved his own home, Gill and his family fought to save those of their neighbors. “I think it’s something that anybody would do if they had the right equipment,” he told Deadline — spoken like an action movie hero, and a real life one too.
The firefight was a family affair. He battled the blaze with his son Cody, a stuntman-turned musician, and nephew Carl Joyce, a pro tennis coach, who took turns with two hoses, pumping water up from the backyard swimming pool. (Watch the video below) “They’re strong guys,” he said,...

When you compare the relatively grounded and taut nature of The Fast and the Furious – Point Break with cars, as one comparison so aptly put – with the recently-released sequel The Fate of the Furious, you’ll begin to get a sense of just how far Universal’s franchise has come, both in terms of death-defying stunts and box office success.

The “Fast” franchise is all about cars and family, and cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) destroys both in the spectacular New York car chase in “The Fate of the Furious,” when she forces Dom (Vin Diesel) to go rogue and betray his family.
Director F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Italian Job”) turns the notion of fast cars against the Furious in the New York sequence. Cold-as-ice Cipher hacks hundreds of self-driving “zombie” vehicles and creates a Times Square demolition derby in order to stop an impenetrable limo with the suitcase she is chasing.
Meanwhile, Cipher manipulates Dom into apprehending the suitcase, as his gang is powerless to stop him. The chase, therefore, contains a two-part narrative that underscores Cipher’s power and Dom’s street-racing prowess.
The dirty little secret: All of the car crashing occurred in Cleveland and only the tie-ins were filmed in Manhattan and on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Bells, wires, computers are all part of the music in Edgar Wright’s The World’S End. As you head off to the theaters this weekend to see the film, have your ears on the lookout, or listenout, for Award winning composer Steven Price’s score.
Reteaming director Edgar Wright with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, The World’S End reunites five friends who return to their hometown to relive an epic pub crawl from their youth. Along the way, the “five musketeers” uncover an alien invasion and soon learn that they are mankind’s only hope of survival.
Price joins the dynamic comedic team of Wright, Pegg, and Frost following the trio’s success with Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz.
His passion for music began early: a guitarist from the age of five, he went on to achieve a First Class degree in Music from Cambridge University.

Back in the day Filmmaker took note of Peter Christian Hall’s independent drama Delinquent, and more recently we’ve followed his move into fiction writing. Now, film and literature are combining for the promotion of his new novel, American Fever, a dystopic tale about avian flu. With book trailers a requirement for new books, Hall has decided to let fans create one for American Fever — and win $1,000 in the process. What’s cool is that filmmakers can read the book for free and score their trailer to original music by Gang of Four’s Andy Gill. From the site of Hall’s publisher, Arterial Witness:
“The book trailer is a hybrid beast that hasn’t really paid off for many publishers and authors,” says Hall, who notes that the best trailers contain great music, inviting quotes from respected sources, and compelling images.
Hall has been praised for his own filmmaking.

"Stronger," Kelly Clarkson's fifth studio album, drops Monday (Oct. 24) in CD and digital download format. It sounds like the critics think it's good while still thinking Clarkson could do better.
Brian Mansfield of USA Today writes, "Guys, if you start going out with a girl who tells you how much she loves Kelly Clarkson's latest album, run away. Fast. Kelly takes telling guys off to new levels here, to the point that you eventually start to wonder if, just maybe, it's not the guys with the problem ... Musically, 'Stronger' finds a solid middle ground between the pop-rock of her early albums and the high-energy dance grooves of 2009's 'All I Ever Wanted.' Vocally, Kelly's never sounded better."
The Washington Post's Allison Stewart says, "'Stronger' doesn't venture far from Clarkson's wheelhouse: punchy pop songs overloaded with drama, and resentment. Clarkson can make anything sound good, usually without trying very hard,...

Chris Brown always seems to be coming back from something or other. Following his arrest and guilty plea for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in February of 2009, Brown returned to the music world with Graffiti, which received mixed reviews and was not embraced by the market. Slowly but surely, he has been building up his reputation again, mostly on the strength of some killer singles ("Deuces," his collaboration with Tyga and Kevin McCall from the Fan of a Fan mixtape, was one of the best songs of 2010). So that makes F.A.M.E. something of a comeback album for Brown, whose voice and performance charisma have never been denied.
F.A.M.E. finds Brown exploring new avenues in R&B, hip-hop and especially dance music. Brown recently told MTV News that his fourth album is the best yet at showing off all the sides of his creative mind.
So does F.

Andy Gill has claimed that Red Hot Chili Peppers based their career on his post-punk band Gang Of Four. The guitarist told Metro that the Anthony Kiedis-fronted group are happy to acknowledge their debt to his band, who this week released new studio album Content. Of people copying the Gang Of Four sound, Gill said: "I'm used to it now. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have obviously based their career on Gang Of Four and they'd admit that. "The guitar on their single 'Can't Stop' was directly from one of our early songs and when I (more)...

The Black Swan soundtrack. There are many wondrously skilled musicians across the globe whose bands have dispersed before their time, who have not been fortunate enough to be in a Radiohead, or a Red Hot Chili Peppers, a Queens Of The Stone Age or a Green Day. No appearance on Cribs for them, few residual sales, sod all in the savings account, almost nothing of monetary value to show for five or eight or twelve years making records and being in magazines. For these musicians their creative life becomes back-story, and out of necessity they forge new careers – maybe in production like Ian Broudie (The Lightning Seeds) or in criticism like Andy Gill (Gang of Four). The vast majority fade away, go to work in suits and ties, open a vegetarian cafe or a bar, start a sub-par later-life band and tour provincial town halls, or, like the lead singer...

Post-punk band Gang of Four have unveiled details of their first album of new songs in 16 years. The follow-up to 1995's Shrinkwrapped is titled Content and will be released on January 24, 2011. It will be available on standard CD, vinyl and a limited edition Ultimate Content Can, featuring six booklets - including one containing sachets of blood from guitarist Andy Gill and singer Jon King. How we see ourselves, and how we see the world we have created for ourselves. “When Jon and I talked about the album we were making, we looked back at some of the other (more)...

The new album from Gang of Four, "Content," is the first from the band in 16 years. Founding members Jon King and Andy Gill wanted this new album to prove that they still can deliver intelligent, powerful and liberating rock & roll that is both provocative and simply thrilling.
The Leeds-based, post-punk band will release "Content" on January 25th via Yep Roc. The upcoming release was written by King and Gill. This is the band's first album of new material since 1995's "Shrinkwrapped" and was recorded and produced by Gill, as well.
"What we're trying to do is keep it totally stripped down, where everyone in the band makes an equally intense contribution," King said in a statement. "What I've been thrilled by over the years is that our music still seems to make sense to our audiences, however old they are, and these days they're mostly under 30. They tell us that our music means something,...

English post-punk dynamos Gang of Four clearly know the value of a personal touch. To fund their new album, Content, they’re asking fans for donations. In exchange, they’re offering everything from hand-decorated cassette recordings of their first show to a private listening session with Andy Gill at his studio. Thoughtful, creative rewards are the bread and butter of artists seeking funding on sites like Kickstarter and GoF’s choice, PledgeMusic, but the Leeds rockers really went off the deep end with their reward for fans who donate £45 — along with a book showing “ceramic tiles depicting the last 40 years...
