A Lonely Way to Die: Anwandter Explores the Elements of a Hate Crime
The 2012 murder of openly gay Chilean Daniel Zamudio provides the basis for Alex Antwandter’s elegiac directorial debut, You’ll Never Be Alone. Recalling a legion of cinematic examinations concerned with the aftershocks of homophobic violence, similarities to the Matthew Shepard tragedy (turned into 2002 film The Laramie Project) or the skinheads responsible for the savage murder of Frenchman Francois Chenu (examined in the 2005 documentary Beyond Hatred) are irrefutable. Rather than focus on the motives of the malefactors or the societal prized machismo and misogyny which continues to allow these cycles of hatred to flourish in each new generation, the film’s focus is the creeping devastation to those directly and irreparably affected by such despicable barbarism. Sans answers or resolution, it’s merely an unassuming tale of loss, frustration, and combatting helplessness.

He often likes to weigh in on various cultural topics, and President Barack Obama contributed a comment on Caitlyn Jenner’s gender transition during Thursday night’s (June 25) Trailblazer Honors for the Logo Network.
The Commander-in-Chief stated, “When this network aired its first show, gay marriage was a political wedge issue used to divide us. Today the majority of Americans live in states where they can get married, no matter who they love. Today ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ is history. We passed the hate crime law that bears Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr.’s name. And all you have to do is look at this month’s cover of Vanity Fair to see how America is more accepting of people for who they truly are.”

Logo TV is launching a new documentary division dedicated to untold Lgbt stories, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. The division’s initial slate will include six new docs focusing on Lgbt trailblazers from the perspective of their family and friends including, “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine,” about Wyoming University student Matthew Shepard, whose brutal murder in 1998 sparked a national outcry. “These films will not only educate and enlighten, but spark important dialogue around Lgbt issues that have flown under the radar for far too long,” said Logo’s head of original programming, Pamela Post.

It was early afternoon on Friday, May 23rd 2014. I walked into Tiff Bell Lightbox, knots in my stomach, my eyes still welling with tears. “Just take a deep breath,” I kept telling myself. “You’ll be fine.” Up the escalator I rode, around the corner, and into the lavish Luma lounge. I approached the table, and as soon as I saw Dennis and Judy Shepard, I began to cry. No amount of professionalism or attempt at stoicism could mask the impact of their son’s story, told beautifully by his childhood friend Michele Josue, in Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine. The moving documentary – holding strong with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes – is currently playing at Toronto’s Carlton Cinema through until March 5th.

An almost unbearably heartbreaking documentary rehumanizes the Lgbt icon… and makes him newly tragic all over again. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If you know of Matthew Shepard, it’s probably only because of the horrific nature of his death, which came in October 1998, just before his 22nd birthday and a few days after he was savagely beaten and left tied to a fence on a Wyoming prairie. His murder became a rallying cry for the gay-rights movement, raising awareness of violence against Lgbt people and eventually (in 2009) prompting new federal hate-crime legislation. That Shepard’s death has been almost mythologized since is hardly surprising… but now this almost unbearably heartbreaking documentary rehumanizes him and makes him newly tragic by showing us all the potential that was lost with his way-too-early death, but also...

Far Away So Close: Josue Pays Personal Homage to Memory of Murdered Friend
His name now synonymous with progressive social policy, Matthew Shepard, the young gay man murdered in 1998, would come to represent a generation of bullied, battered and butchered Lgbt American youths. At last, he receives a moving, often devastatingly sorrowful homage in Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine, a documentary from his close friend and first time filmmaker Michele Josue. There have been other significant filmed documents attempting to grapple with his horrific demise, most notably the 2002 television film adaptation of Moises Kaufman’s play The Laramie Project, which featured a star studded cast. Now, nearing seventeen years since his death, Josue finally was able to assemble a more personal ode to Shepard, something that was initially discouraged by Shepard’s mother. The only trouble is, though often meaningful and loving, it’s a document that seems unnecessary,...

Chicago – In 1998, the murder of Matthew Shepard led to an overview of the hate crimes in America, especially the type of assault crimes perpetuated against the gay community. In essence, Shepard became a martyr and a symbol for something much larger. An old high school classmate remembers his legacy for this, and for just being a soul buddy, in “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine.”

The timing of the film’s release comes as the State of Alabama is determined to deny the rights of marriage to gay people despite an opposing court order. Funny. Smart. Sincere. Irritable. Gay. Cute. Humble. These are just some of the adjectives used by Matthew Shepard to describe himself in an ongoing series of journal entries that he mostly kept a secret from his friends, his family, everyone. Shepard was a young gay man from Laramie, Wyoming whose brutal murder sent ripples of grief and stringent awareness from the middle of the country all the way to the coasts. I suspect Shepard kept this diary (where all entries begin with “I am…”) to allow himself some sense of belonging in a world that so often denied him that basic human right. The new documentary, “Matt Shepard Is A Friend Of Mine,” is directed by Shepard’s childhood friend Michele Josue, who conducts some shattering interviews with Shepard’s schoolmates, family friends, and his understandably devastated parents. Michele Josue's debut documentary is a tribute to her friend Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old gay college student murdered in October 1998 outside Laramie, Wyoming. His ordeal prompted an impassioned national conversation about homophobia and hate crimes, but Josue recalls the media frenzy as a surreal and painful blur, the moment when her beloved classmate was transformed into a symbol, widely embraced yet little known. The present tense of the title, Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine, describes the attitude of her interviewees, who grieve Shepard's loss but still feel the impact of his presence. Josue met Shepard at The American School in Switzerland, where he spent the last years of high school after his father took a job abroad. That engaging kid from Casper traveled ...

Guinness pulls out of parade, Chris Pine convicted of DUI, Kris Allen makes SXSW beautiful and wild
In what has to be the fastest trial I’ve ever heard of, Chris Pine was convicted of DUI in New Zealand. The actor was arrested last week after a wrap party. His lawyer argued he had a clean record, and that a conviction would make getting a visa difficult for the actor. The judge wasn’t buying it though. “This issue of a visa will be a complication, but you’re no different to other people who may wish to travel to Canada.” Pine still stopped outside the courthouse to sign autographs for fans.
Guinness joined Sam Adams, Hilton, and Heineken in dropping sponsorship of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade because Lgbt groups are banned. Prominent gay bars including the Stonewall Inn were set to ban the beverage tomorrow in protest.

Eight years ago, writer-director-graphic novelist John Ridley was surfing the Web when he stumbled across a Jimi Hendrix song entitled "Sending My Love to Linda." A single question — "Who is Linda?" — set Ridley loose on a project that had vexed numerous screenwriters and filmmakers before him: crafting a biopic on the legendary guitarist. The result, Jimi: All Is By My Side, covers a brief period in Hendrix's life — 1966-1967, right before he plays the Monterey Pop Festival — and stars OutKast's André 3000 as the late musician.

NBA donating Jason Collins’ jersey revenue to Lgbt charities, Tituss Burgess joins Tooken, Robbie Rogers feels constraints of being a role model
Jared Leto snapped up the Independent Spirit Award for his portrayal of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, increasing the odds that he’ll pick up the Oscar Sunday night for the role of a transgender HIV patient in the early 1980s.
The federal judge in Kentucky who ruled that the state must recognize out of state same-sex marriages has put a three week stay on his order. The state had asked for 90 days to appeal, but Judge Heyburn says they should be able to figure out how to implement the order by March 20.
The NBA is going to donate proceeds from Jason Collins’ record selling #98 jersey to the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Glsen. Autographed jerseys that Collins wears in games will be auctioned off to benefit the same organizations.

Judy Shepard has responded to the Ole Miss football players who heckled a production of The Laramie Project. “One thing I often see in productions of The Laramie Project is that involvement in the play sparks in them an awareness of anti-gay hate that they often would not have noticed, especially when performed at colleges and universities. Seeing how the community of Laramie, Wyoming was affected by the murder of my son as told in the play, creates a space where a community can talk about hate.” The chancellor of the school has finally apologized and promised the students will “be held accountable.”

Today, Aug. 22, marks the 50th birthday of piano songstress, Tori Amos.
Though many may associate Amos with their high school years, she still has a large and devout fan base, one that music journalist Chuck Klosterman once ranked as the second most dedicated fan base in music (after Slayer, of course).
When Amos broke onto the music scene with her debut album, "Little Earthquakes," Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell comparisons ran rampant but she quickly proved that she was was her own musical force. From her next record, "Under the Pink," which spawned the radio hit "Cornflake Girl," to the seminal 2002 album "Scarlet's Walk," Amos has been keeping busy releasing an album every other year or so since the early '90s, as well as writing a book, "Piece By Piece," with music critic Ann Powers and composing a musical, "The Light Princess," due to hit the stage in London this fall.

Together the women stood on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday, their hands joined and raised in victory to celebrate the striking down of the Defense of Marriage Act. Within minutes, another court decision was announced - one that turned away the defenders of Proposition 8 and clears the way for same-sex marriage in their home state of California. And that is something in which Kris Perry and Sandy Stier have a very personal stake. The couple of a dozen years, who both work in public service, do not claim to be activists, and yet the case of Hollingsworth v.

Edith Windsor has won her case - and now it's time to party. The woman behind the challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma), which was declared unconstitutional Wednesday by the U.S. Supreme Court, was at the home of her attorney, Roberta Kaplan, when she heard the news. The entire room erupted in shouts of joy and the sound of tears of happiness when the ruling came down, reports The New Yorker. But then things quieted down enough for Windsor, 83, to take a call from President Barack Obama. "Hello, who am I talking to?" Windsor said, according to the magazine's report.

It's been almost 15 years since Matthew Shepard was lynched on a Wyoming fencepost for being gay and his mother, Judy, remembers with tears the conversation she and her son had just a couple of months before his October 1998 murder. "There had been a [news] story about same-sex marriage and he was debating it with me," Shepard told People Wednesday after the historic Supreme Court ruling in favor of gay marriage. "He asked me if I thought gay couples would ever be allowed to get married and he wasn't at all optimistic it would happen. He was in a mindset of, 'People...

(Rns) Twenty years ago, a gay Mormon character stepped onstage for the first time. His name was Joe Pitt, and he was in Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches.”
Pitt lived in New York with a good reputation and a bad marriage to a woman addicted to Valium. As colleagues dealt with the devastation and uncertainty of AIDS – it was the 1980s – he grappled with openly acknowledging his sexuality. He was Mormon. And gay. And the two didn’t mix.
Before Pitt, there was a gay Mormon character in a novel: Brigham Anderson, in Allan Drury’s “Advise and Consent,” published in 1959. But words like “gay” and “homosexual” weren’t used; it was all innuendo.
Now, the scene has changed: Gay Mormon characters and themes have a growing role in theater and literature.

NBA center Jason Collins is the first openly gay professional athlete in American team sports. Rumors have circulated in recent weeks that one or more NFL players were preparing to come out as gay in the near future, and the NHL announced a partnership with an organization that would support any of its players who chose to expose their sexuality.
But Collins' announcement comes straight out of left field. Sports Illustrated got word that an unnamed player was ready to reveal his homosexuality, and the result is a first-person op/ed written by Collins himself. "The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect," writes Collins. "Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully?"
Collins says he wanted to be the one to reveal his sexuality, rather than live under fear of being outed by the media.

Roger Ebert's Chicago funeral will reportedly be picketed by members of the Westboro Baptist Church.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, members of Westboro slammed the late movie critic as "a fag enabler," noting that his tweets "mock[ed] the faithful servants of God" that make up the congregation of the Kansas-based church, which is known for its extremely anti-gay views, in a news release.
The news release continues:
"Now the famed critic is in a new jurisdiction, where he can see the blessings poured out on God's humble servants in heaven, from his seat of eternal torment & sorrow in Hell! It's too late for the fool Roger Ebert! Wbc will continue to bind those who still live in Doomed america to God's eternal laws & Word, so you, like Roger, are without excuse!"

Happy 66th birthday to the phenomenally talented, mythically successful, and almighty-gay-and-powerful Elton John! If his one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life personality isn't enough to garner your eternal respect, surely his killer catalog of songs does the trick. Frankly, he has to be awesome, otherwise this website probably would've been given a different name like "AfterPetShopBoys," "AfterWham!," or -- still my favorite -- "BeforeLautner." (Kidding.)
On this blessed day, I ask you: What's Elton John's most underrated moment? I've picked out three songs I rarely hear anyone discuss, and I truly believe each is a highpoint in his extremely varied career.
"Are You Ready For Love"
The first is an effervescent pop jam whose original version is over seven minutes long, but this clipped-down version clocks in under four. It's 1979's "Are You Ready For Love," which I consider the perfect rollicking summer anthem. Connoisseurs of the Bravo Network's earlier, less-Housewifey days may...

Foster says she values privacy, yet it is every gay public figure's duty to be out, to make life better for ordinary gay people
She was, of course, ready for her close-up. Deliciously groomed and styled by someone who seemingly doesn't hate women, Jodie Foster was fully prepared for the biggest soliloquy of her life. And yet, because she is an actor, the Oscar-winner began her speech accepting the Cecil B DeMille award at the Golden Globes yesterday by claiming spontaneity: "I have a sudden urge to say something that I've never been able to air in public."
This was not a sudden urge, a lightning reflex to pick lint off a loved one's coat. This, a sort-of coming out speech – she had paid tribute to "my beautiful Cydney" Bernard, her then partner, at a Hollywood breakfast in December 2007 – was 50 years in the making. Forty-seven of which she has been in front of cameras.

Barbra Streisand appears in a new pro-Barack Obama ad released by the National Jewish Democratic Council and repeats her belief that this election, "the choice is clear."
It's a message she's shared before. Streisand wrote a blog on The Huffington Post, in which she paints Mitt Romney as a return to President George W. Bush's politics and Obama as the only viable candidate.
In the Njdc ad, Streisand celebrates Obama's efforts at jumpstarting the economy and touts the president's support of women's and gay rights. There's an odd, soft glow to the clip, which features the actress, singer and activist delivering prepared remarks in a serious tone.
Streisand also recently sent out an urgent request for donations to those on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's email list. At a concert at the Barclays Center earlier in October, she mocked Romney as a "good actor" who shouldn't be in the White House.

“I think that I’ve always been a great lover of Henry James,” director Moisés Kaufman told The Huffington Post in a recent interview. "He had such keen insight into human psychology."
That insight will get a Broadway airing when Kaufman brings his production of "The Heiress," based on the 1880 Henry James novel “Washington Square,” to the Walter Kerr Theater in New York on November 1.
In his best-known play, "The Laramie Project," Kaufman brought to life the small Wyoming town that made headlines in 1998 when an openly gay teenage resident named Matthew Shepard was murdered. In 2011, Kaufman turned his attention to fictional tragedy, helming a production based on Tennessee Williams' short story "One Arm." Now, the playwright and director is combining his eye for re-interpretation and historical accuracy -- with a Henry James adaptation set in 1850s New York.

I cringed when I saw the promos for last night's 20/20 and their "exclusive" first interview with former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi, just found guilty on 15 counts -- including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation -- last week for spying with a webcam while his roommate, Tyler Clementi, was on a date with another man in their dorm room. My gut was right, for the most part, as I watched last night.
I was horrified at not only the sensationalism, but the near complete lack of depth to this very complex case that has been the subject of so much media coverage. This piece was a horrible way to give voice to Ravi, who, I think, came off as smug and without any real sense of the consequences and cruelty) of his actions in a manner that was offensive to anyone who has been subjected to bullying of any kind.
