The popular .hack//G.U. RPG series that originated on the PlayStation 2 is getting an HD remaster treatment later this year, bringing the trilogy together in one set with gameplay enhancements and more. Come inside to learn more!
One of the most popular Jrpg franchises in the mid-00s is coming back thanks to a remaster on the PlayStation 4. The .hack//G.U. trilogy was a huge multimedia endeavor that encompassed the three games, an anime, and novels. The franchise has mostly been dormant since then, but if you missed out (or want to play them again), you'll get a chance later this year:
Leading interactive entertainment company, Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc., today announces .hack//G.U.™ Last Recode for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and PC via Steam®. .hack//G.U. Last Recode collects the three .hack//G.U. action-rpg titles; Rebirth, Reminisce, and Redemption with updated 1080p resolution, 16:9 widescreen picture, and 60fps frame rate, gameplay balance changes, and additional features to be announced at a later date making this collection the definitive .hack//G.U. experience for fans and newcomers alike.
.hack is a multimedia franchise created and developed by famed Japanese developer CyberConnect2. Comprising of video games, anime, novels, and manga, the world of .hack focuses on the mysterious events surrounding a wildly popular in-universe massively multiplayer role-playing game called The World. .hack//G.U. begins after the events of the original .hack series with players assuming the role of Haseo as he tracks down a powerful Player Killer named Tri-Edge who killed his friend’s in-game avatar Shino, and put her into a coma in real life.
In addition to offering the .hack//G.U. trilogy, .hack//G.U. Last Recode will also include enhanced battle balance and game pacing to provide an optimal experience as well as a new Cheat Mode enabling players who want to just enjoy the story to start the game with full stats.
“The .hack series continues to be one of the most requested titles we hear about from our community,” said Dennis Lee, Brand Marketing Director for Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. “We are very excited for these fans to return to The World and experience .hack//G.U. like never before with .hack//G.U. Was it Godard or was it Truffaut who said “critics make the best directors”?
A film critic by trade and a poet in his heart, Brian D. Johnson began his film “Al Purdy Was Here” as a fundraising tool to save the A-frame cabin in the woods built by Canadian poet Al Purdy and his wife Eurithe. As making the film progressed, Johnson began to see much more in the film than merely a vehicle [piece] to raise money. “Al Purdy Was Here” soon evolved into something much greater, something deeply poetic by a writer who himself treasures poetry even as he critiques films….
Brian says, “It is about art and life and the fact that they are often in conflict as we try to make our lives. Poetry is my aim…finding poetry in cinema. But music was the reason I made the film.”
Canada's leading musicians and artists come together to tell the tale of Al Purdy.
The documentary features archival materials and first-hand accounts, including interviews with his publisher Howard White, editor Sam Solecki, widow Eurithe Purdy, poets Dennis Lee, Steven Heighton and George Bowering—and Bowering's wife Jean Baird, the powerhouse behind the campaign to save and restore Purdy's A-Frame cabin.
Read Indiewire for more about the movie here.
Gordon Pinsent (“Away from Her”), Michael Ondaatje (“The English Patient”), Leonard Cohen (“Natural Born Killers”), Margaret Atwood (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) all pay tribute to him along with other well known writers, actors, directors and singers who adapt his poetry.
This film premiered, naturally enough, at Tiff 2015 but I only caught up with it at Iff Panama this year because Brian – whom I met one year in Havana and loaned him $100 to pay his hotel bill -- was at Iff Panama where his film was screening. With him was our friend-in-common, Latinaphile, Helga Stephenson, so I tagged along as a friend to see a film about a person I had never heard of before. And I was entranced by what I saw.
Al Purdy was known to be a raucous, barroom brawling Canadian poet, something on a par with Charles Bukowski. In fact they were friends and corresponded extensively, but there is some question as to whether Purdy’s character as a barroom brawler was put on as his persona to help popularize his poetry. Was he actually such a rough person? His wife, Eurithe Purdy, who survived him and is featured in the movie said that at home he was quite a peaceable man (when he was not boozing it up with his pals). He was also a philosophical soul, enraptured by nature—Canada's Walt Whitman as well as its Bukowski.
Sl: How did you get these musicians?
I went to the pantheon of famous Canadian singer-songwriters and asked them to compose and record music inspired by Purdy's work. We paid engineers and musicians. But the artists licensed their songs to us for free, and in return they got to own the rights to the songs.
I got in touch with Neil Young through his brother. I loved Neil's music, and interviewed him for one of his films. Remember Neil Young: Heart of Gold directed by Jonathan Demme?
I sent Neil a Purdy poem called "My 48 Pontiac", written from the Pov of a car in a junk yard—knowing Neil loves old cars. He never did get around to recording an original number for us, but he loved the poem, and the project. So when we wanted to use "Journey Through the Past" (from Neil's 1971 Massey Hall concert album) on the soundtrack, he gave us the rights at no cost.
We selected half a dozen songs for the movie but commissioned and recorded six more, and we're assembling all of them on an album called "The Al Purdy Songbook".
Meanwhile, the film's score was composed by my son, Casey Johnson, who recorded it all with purely analog technology—in the spirit of Purdy's rough and raw esthetic.
The music played at a 2013 benefit concert to save Purdy's cabin in the woods become the impetus for me to make the movie. I remember leaving the show and telling the organizers, "The next thing you should do is an Al Purdy Songbook.") I didn't know I'd end up doing it myself. And as it turned out, it was the music that made the film possible. Musicians are more famous than poets. They have an audience. And this is a movie about a dead poet. How do you make a movie about a dead poet?
The music brings it to life . . . I suppose I could have made a zombie movie instead.
Sl: How did you cast the movie?
You get the most famous people lined up and then the rest follow. I’m friends with Michael Ondaatje. I know Margaret Atwood. I know Leonard Cohen. So I started there.
Sl: How did you finance the film?
The CBC Documentary Channel gave us 25% of the budget and that triggered the rest of the financing. The Rogers Documentary Fund and the Rogers Cable Fund became the other principal contributors.
But Ron Mann, who exec produced, got the ball rolling, and his company, Films We Like, came onboard as the Canadian distributor. We're still looking for international distribution.
The movie felt like a barn-raising, with everyone pitching in to help make it work.
Brian D. Johnson is former film critic for Maclean's, Canada's weekly newsmagazine, is the current president of the Toronto Film Critics Association. "Al Purdy was Here” (2015) is his first feature documentary. Once again he'll be writing about film for Maclean's in May at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Quirky characters aren’t enough to save an independent comedy these days, and neither is packing it full of recognizable faces. Jesus Henry Christ is guilty on both counts, but to its credit it has some brains to back it up. Unfortunately, it leans a bit too heavily on its two child co-stars Jason Spevack and Samantha Weinstein, whom when separate are rather fantastic but who just can’t create a convincing interaction when paired together. The chemistry may be off, but it’s not what prevents the film from being a great little comedy; that’s the writing’s fault. Piling such overly familiar but eclectic characters into a single mix could produce so much more than what Writer and Director Dennis Lee gives us here, but instead of popping out as a memorable character piece, it fizzles out as all the familiar clichés are hit with nothing new rising to the top.

Well, people, it’s here. Each year, starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the early weeks of summer, we find ourselves knee-deep in a period marked by the release of monstrously large popcorn flicks, movies that show off stars and special effects while raking in the dough. That’s right: it’s the season of the terminal illness drama-comedy. Oh, wait – just kidding. It’s Summer Blockbuster Season! And we’re off to a great start with Marvel’s superhero team up this weekend. Buckle up.
Let’s just get right to it. “The Avengers,” from writer-director Joss Whedon, unites almost every superhero under the Marvel banner in a fight against time and evil, in this weekend’s biggest movie (by far). Whedon, only several weeks out of receiving critical acclaim for his penning of “The Cabin in the Woods,” has created another masterpiece here. There's a moment in "Jesus Henry Christ" when a character is said to be in poor health. When asked what happened to him, the answer is "The Bulls won the championship." We flash back to 1998, where a lisping ethnic caricature sits on a couch; his shoulders slumped, defeated as the television blares news of the Bulls' championship triumph. The joke, we're meant to assume, is that there were serious repercussions to Chicago winning that championship, though we never exactly see what happens to our doomed, ultimately irrelevant character. Later, we learn in another cutaway occurring a half hour later for no apparent reason, that the man left the house to take out the garbage, only to absorb a bullet to the head, ostensibly fired in the air by an overzealous Bulls fan. So the joke...yeah.

Most of us are suckers for a good child prodigy story. Be it Bobby Fischer, Akeelah Anderson, Salinger’s Glass family or Anderson’s Tenenbaums, we gawk at the seemingly miraculous abilities, identify with the weird families, weep at the ostracism and cheer at the victories. All of these factors are in play in Dennis Lee’s Jesus Henry Christ, the story of a remarkable boy named Henry and his quest to find his biological father....

Title: Jesus Henry Christ Director: Dennis Lee Starring: Michael Sheen, Toni Collette, Jason Spevack, Samantha Weinstein, Frank Moore A canted coming-of-age tale about a 10-year-old prodigy who sets out to find his biological father, writer-director Dennis Lee’s “Jesus Henry Christ,” executive-produced by Julia Roberts, uses the loose thematic conceit of burgeoning self-identity as a jumping off point for a colorful and at times funny but mostly emotionally hollow exploration of adolescent isolation and yearning for acceptance. Jesus Henry Christ, writer-director Dennis Lee’s follow-up to Fireflies in the Garden will be released in the Us next month, and with a cast headed up by Michael Sheen and Toni Collette, it sounds promising.
The film is centred on a young boy, played Jason Spevack (Sunshine Cleaning), looking for his biological father (Michael Sheen), and Apple have debuted the first trailer and poster ahead of its Us release.

I'll admit it: I'm kind of a sucker for quirky indie comedies, the more twee the better. I fully recognize why some people don't like them and I honestly can't blame them - I have moments of self reflection about it myself - but lord help me, I can't get enough of a precocious young child who wants his mom to help track down their biological father. And that's exactly what I get in Jesus Henry Christ. Based on a short that director Dennis Lee made back in 2003, the feature film stars Toni Collette, Michael Sheen, and introduces Jason Spevack and Samantha Weinstein. Check out the trailer below and to see it in HD hop over to Apple. Does it look kind of corny? Sure. Has the young genius trope been done to death yet? Quite possibly. But still, I couldn't help myself from smiling while watching that preview. Add...

"I'm his mother, you're nothing but a test tube filled with sperm!" E1 Entertainment has debuted the official trailer on Apple for the indie comedy Jesus Henry Christ, written and directed by Dennis Lee (Fireflies in the Garden), starring Toni Collette and Jason Spevack as her son Henry James Herman, a precocious 10-year-old kid who sets out on a quest to find out who his sperm-donor father was. The trailer reveals that it's Michael Sheen, who actually has some sort of history with Collette's character anyway, and all the fun begins. There are some interesting fantastical elements to this with the Post-It notes, but it looks charming. After premiering the first eight minutes of his live-action feature theatrical debut at SXSW festival this past weekend, we’ve got the first poster for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted. Coming from Collider, we can see the back of Mark Wahlberg, along with his teddy bear, who comes to life after a wish. The film is said to be heavily R-rated, featuring the foul bear played by MacFarlane through motion-capture. Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton, and Giovanni Ribisi make up the rest of the cast for the film arriving on July 13th.
Unless Ted is one of the least funny comedies of the year, then we’ve also got a poster for a film that is much, much worse. We endured Jesus Henry Christ during Tribeca Film Festival last year (review here) and now it is being unfortunately unleashed into cinemas. Writer and director Dennis Lee‘s...

Good news, horrible news on the distribution front.
First up, Variety had learned that Side By Side, a fantastic-looking documentary from Keanu Reeves and director Christopher Kenneally, has been picked up by Tribeca Films. As the trailer already indicated, Side follows the Matrix star as he digs into “the development of cinema and the impact of digital filmmaking via in-depth interviews with filmmakers such as Danny Boyle, James Cameron, David Fincher, George Lucas, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, Lars Von Trier, the Wachowskis and more.” That, I’d dare say, is one of the finest collections of filmmaking talent ever compiled for a single project.
We’ll be able to get a look at the film when a theatrical and VOD release hits this coming summer; Reeves and Kenneally will also “bring the pic to college campuses and film schools” around this time next year, presumably in...

Fireflies in the Garden
Directed by: Dennis Lee
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Julia Roberts
Running Time: 1 hr 29 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: February 7, 2012
Plot: A tragic accident befalls the Taylor family in a time that is meant for celebration. This leads to old demons with Michael (Reynolds) and his father (Dafoe).
Who’S It For? Do you like family drama? I’m not talking about the kind where you look back years later and laugh about it. I’m talking about family drama that thrashes you around for years leaving you feeling weighed down.
Movie:
Coming home is hard for some people and Michael Taylor (Reynolds) fits that bill easy enough. Coming home to a sudden tragedy is near impossible. Surrounded by really good, intense family drama is the feeling of “near impossible,” but that doesn’t stop Fireflies in the Garden being a solid film.
It deserves better.

We've all been guilty of telling a white lie to get out of something, but what if you accidentally made up a story that completely upended your life? That's the situation facing Lonnie in the new film "The Lie," who, in the spur of the moment to ditch work, tells his insufferable boss that his young daughter has died. As you can imagine, things begin to snowball quickly.
The director, co-writer and star of the film is Joshua Leonard, who you may know as one of the three students from "The Blair Witch Project." Since then Leonard has transitioned into filmmaking, with "The Lie" being his feature-length directorial debut. To get his personal take on his cinematic baby, we enlisted Leonard for our "Call-In Commentary" series where directors provide narration for their movie trailer. You can watch the results of that below. "The Lie" premieres in New York City on...

As famed director Joel Schumacher puts it, his new film "Trespass" is ostensibly about the "haves" versus the "have nots," but only on its face. In the movie, Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman live a wealthy existence in an exclusive gated community. Everything is seemingly perfect: Cage is wrapped up in his business and Kidman is fascinated by the sexy new handy man (Cam Gigandet). But things start to unravel once "Animal Kingdom" star Ben Mendelsohn launches an armed home invasion of their mansion, and the film descends into betrayal, deception and other salacious labels.
Schumacher has delivered thirty years worth of memorable films, among them "St. Elmo's Fire," "The Lost Boys," "Falling Down" and "Tigerland," so it was a thrill for him to participate in our Call-In Commentary series, where directors provide narration for their movie trailers. In the video below, hear the "Trespass" filmmaker discuss Nicole's predilection for bare feet,...

"Fireflies in the Garden" is one of those smaller films that you've probably never heard of, but has an incredible assemblage of actors that immediately piques your interest. For "Fireflies," a tense drama involving family and loss, director Dennis Lee managed to bring aboard Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Watson and a personal favorite of mine, Horatio Hornblower himself, Ioan Gruffudd.
When the film kicks off, we're immediately introduced to an upper-class family that has everything going for them...until tragedy strikes later that day. It's the fallout from that sad event that propels the film forward and makes it a character study from each of these talented performers.

With the holidays quickly coming upon us, larger plates, higher credit card charges and films about extremely dysfunctional families are just around the corner. Sporting an all-star cast headlined by Ryan Reynolds and Julia Roberts, Fireflies in the Garden is based on first time writer-director Dennis Lee's semi-autobiographical story about how his family dealt with tragedy.

"Usually when I hear the words 'family drama,' I run," said Willem Dafoe, who nevertheless found something to savor in writer-director Dennis Lee's Fireflies in the Garden. Little did Dafoe or his castmates Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Emily Watson, Hayden Panettiere and least of all Lee himself know that their particular family drama wouldn't make it to American theaters only today -- nearly four years after its Berlin Film Festival premiere in 2008.

Chicago – It’s always risky for a screenwriter to craft a film about a family of writers in that when the result is a script so generically awful as that for “Fireflies in the Garden” it’s going to stick out even more prominently. After sitting on the shelf for years (it played festivals in 2008 and was supposed to be released that year) and reportedly undergoing some reshoots, this stale drama is finally getting a limited release and will prove just how limited it is to the poor saps who pay to see it.
The most interesting thing about “Fireflies in the Garden” may be how it proves, yet again, that talented actors and actresses can still get sucked into awful projects despite their well-known abilities. What on Earth did Willem Dafoe and Emily Watson see in this mess? They’re such talented performers that one would assume they should know better by now.

Julia Roberts shot newbie director Dennis Lee's ensemble family drama Fireflies in the Garden four years ago, but after an infamously disastrous Berlin Film Festival showing and distributor drama at Senator Films, the indie film languished for years on the shelf. Last night at their premiere in Los Angeles Lee told Movieline how Roberts saved the film from direct-to-video hell and Roberts explained why her upcoming project, Snow White, will be worth the price of admission.

In spite of an impressively starry cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hayden Panettiere, and Ioan Gruffudd, there’s still no real need to rush to see this middling effort about the fights and reconnections experienced by ...

“Fireflies in the Garden” is the cinematic equivalent of going out to dinner with your friend’s family and then having to watch them all fight like cats and dogs the whole time: it’s got to be worse for the people going through it, but you sure as hell have no interest in watching it. Writer-director Dennis Lee, who I can only imagine drew from a deep well of personal experiences – or if he didn’t, clearly suffers from dysfunction envy – created this vivid tale of an embittered writer returning to his childhood home to confront a troubled past. But…...

Ok, so let’s start with your short film, Jesus Henry Christ. Is that where you feel your career started rolling?
I would say so. I went to Columbia University for graduate school in film and you had to make two films at the time, one was your thesis and one was your non thesis film and I made a short called Jesus Henry Christ which was a 12 minute comedy and it was my non thesis film. We shot it, we were one of the first HD shoots — cut it on Final Cut Pro, did everything at home, and after it was done I turned it in as my non-thesis film. Then, Columbia killed the thesis requirement. So my non-thesis film became my thesis film, and it did well. It won a Student Academy Award for narrative and it got me meetings with managers,...
