If there’s any show that drives me absolutely crazy, Mental is the one. I’ll admit, I’d never seen it before, and I thought the premise might make for some excellent television. The basis is that Dr. Jack Gallagher (played by Prison Break’s Chris Vance) has been appointed as the Director of Mental Health Services at an La hospital despite having an incredibly unconventional way of dealing with his patients. Unfortunately for him, his boss is also his ex-lover, Nora Skoff (played by Annabella Sciora of Law and Order: Criminal Intent), and is super conventional. Even worse, most of the staff dislikes him from the beginning as Dr. Veronica Hayden-Jones (Jacqueline McKenzie) is bitter he got the job instead of her and they all think he is crazy. Sounds interesting, right?
It should be awesome, but it’s really not. At times I found it unbearable to watch.

The lead character, Dr. Jack Gallagher, uses his radically unorthodox approach to bring him back to the real world.
Titled "Book of Judges", the episode is slated to air this Tuesday, June 9. Fox, according to Washington Post, will air an Rip tribute to the late actor at the end of the episode.

Chicago – Hugh Laurie deserves the heaps of praise he gets for his spectacular work on “House”. If you’re wondering what that show would be like without the same believable medical issues, interesting characters or whip-smart dialogue provided by the show’s underrated writers, though, check out the new “Mental”. It’s another series about a rebellious doctor and it pales in comparison.

Mental</i>" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />The womenfolk (and some of the men) might find themselves whistling at Prison Break's Whistler when Fox's Mental premieres this Tuesday at 9 pm. Chris Vance, whose Dr. Jack Gallagher bares almost all in one of the very first scenes, gave us a look at the House-like drama and the tightrope it must walk in depicting mental illness. The London-born actor also comes clean on Prison Breaker Wentworth Miller's hygiene habits. TVGuide.com: Congratulations on being one of the few foreign actors who gets to keep his accent on screen.
Vance: That's true! It was a decision made by the producers of the show when we were doing the audition process. They figured it'd be good for the international side of it; they think [Mental is] going to sell in like 35 countries.

Lesbian/bi visibility on primetime American television this summer is not much better than it is the rest of the year — which is to say, it's pretty slim pickings.
Among the shows premiering or returning in the next few weeks, there are a few with supporting lesbian/bi characters (Mental, The Closer); one with an out actress in a supporting role (Hawthorne); and a reality show featuring two out female contestants (Top Chef Master).
Here's a review of the pilot or first new episode(s) of all four series, and a short list of the premiere/air dates of other shows that may interest you.
Warning: some mild spoilers, but no major plot points revealed
