"You're like a fluffy piece of cotton candy with legs!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Thelma the Unicorn, an animated musical comedy from filmmakers Jared Hess & Lynn Wang. Made by Mikros Animation and Netflix Animation, along with Buzzfeed Studios, Matchbox Hero, Scholastic Entertainment. Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamorous music star. In a moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and she instantly rises to global stardom, but this new life of fame comes at a cost. This animated comedy stars singer / songwriter Brittany Howard as the voice of Thelma, along with Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, and Jon Heder. This looks way, way too similar to the Sing series of movies, with singing animals competing in competitions. Though I do like the plot in this being inspired by being fake (on...

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Napoleon Dynamite. It was in a Montreal movie theater in the old Forum building (currently featured in the Queen IMAX doc Queen Rock Montreal). The film had only been out a few weeks but had already started becoming a cult hit following its Sundance premiere. I remember it being a matinee on a weekday, and I was stunned when I saw several audience members wearing identical “Vote for Pedro” t-shirts. I knew from the reviews that it was a reference to the movie, and it was then that I had an accurate idea of just how deep the Napoleon Dynamite cult was going.
And folks – that was Twenty years ago! Crazy isn’t it? But yes, Napoleon Dynamite has been a thing since 2004, with it grossing $44 million on a $400,000 budget, and it’s known as being one of the best-selling DVDs of all time,...

Everyone has a high school movie that rings uncomfortably true to their own experiences as a teenager. For some, it's a bitingly satirical portrait like "Heathers" or "Mean Girls," while for others, it's a brutally honest dramedy like "The Edge of Seventeen." But for me, there's only one film that really captures what my time was like as a non-Mormon attending a predominantly Mormon high school in a small Utah town in the early 2000s, and that's "Napoleon Dynamite." True, writer/director Jared Hess' 2004 cult hit takes place in the filmmaker's hometown of Preston, Idaho, but ... well, let's just say that if you know anything about small-town Utah and Idaho Mormon culture, then you know they weren't exactly worlds apart when the film was made.
I was fortunate enough to have graduated from high school literal weeks before "Napoleon Dynamite" arrived, which spared me from having to listen to my...

Exclusive: Los Angeles-based Premiere Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide rights to romantic comedy Plan B, starring Emmy-award winner Jamie Lee (HBO’s Crashing) and Jon Heder.
Premiere Entertainment will launch worldwide sales of the film at the upcoming American Film Market with all territories currently available.
Directed by first-timer Brandon Tamburri, from an original screenplay by Tamburri and Jean Monpere, Plan B follows the story of Piper, a young woman who, against better judgment, decides to sleep with a successful businessman and tells him he’s the father of her unborn baby after a one-night stand with her awkward neighbor leaves her pregnant.
The Joke Zero and Future Proof Films pic is produced by DJ Dodd, Erika Hampson, and Tamburri. Cast also includes Oscar Nominee Tom Berenger, Shannon Elizabeth, and SAG Award Winner Kate Flannery (NBC’s The Office). Rounding out the ensemble cast are Michael Lombardi (FX’s Rescue Me), Subhah Agarwal (HBO’s Westworld), Daniel K. Isaac (Showtime’s Billions), NFL star Vernon Davis, and Danielle Perez (A24’s Dicks: The Musical).
Full Synopsis reads: After a fun night out, rebellious writer Piper (Jamie Lee) drunkenly sleeps with her awkward neighbor, Evan (Jon Heder), and winds up pregnant. When she attempts to tell Evan the news, Piper quickly realizes that he’s not the long-term guy for her and the baby. After receiving news from publishing exec Jane (Kate Flannery) that her dream of a book deal is coming to fruition, she needs to find a stable relationship – and quick. Going against the advice of her best friend Maya (Subhah Agarwal), Piper opts to keep the pregnancy a secret until she can find a more successful guy to sleep with and hopefully start a family.
After a few failed and comical attempts at finding a match, Piper stumbles into Cameron (Michael Lombardi), a financial advisor and regular at the café she works at. Everything appears to be going as planned as Cameron falls for Piper and is ecstatic about the pregnancy. Cameron introduces Piper to his parents Joe (Tom Berenger) and Diane and fends off advances from his flirty boss Anne (Shannon Elizabeth) along the way. While juggling her double life, Piper continues to bump into her neighbor Evan, who has no idea that he is the father of her soon-to-be-born baby. However, Piper’s evil scheme starts to unravel when she starts second-guessing herself, realizing that she could be making the biggest mistake of her life.
Carlos Rincon, SVP of acquisitions at Premiere Entertainment, negotiated the deal with producer DJ Dodd on behalf of Joke Zero and Future Proof Films.
“This film has been a labor of love for me, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Premiere is the perfect partner for us, and I’m excited to be working with them,” Tamburri said.
DJ Dodd, Owner of Future Proof Films, added: “We are very proud of the film we’ve made through the immense hard work of all of our cast and crew. Making this film has been a fun ride, and we can’t wait to introduce it to the world.”...

Jon Heder and T.J. Miller are set to star in a web3 animated series inspired by the collapse of crypto bank Ftx.
Miller (Silicon Valley) has been cast to play a character inspired by Sam Bankman-Fried in workplace comedy Fortun3 loosely inspired by the implosion of Ftx last year. Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) is also joining the series.
Web3 story studio Toonstar is producing and, in what it calls an industry first, will also release an AI-powered companion game in which token holders guide characters through a series of life decisions and moral dilemmas similar to board game The Game of Life.
As the series storyline, the impacts will be felt by corresponding chapters of the companion game. AI will power the development of original characters and shareable digital comic books based on token holders’ gameplay. Players will also be able to earn their characters a role in the animated series.

How in the hell does a small, low-budget independent movie become a massive runaway blockbuster hit and pop-cultural landmark at once? While not an exact science, there are surely several different roads to success for each production. We’ve seen it in the past with My Big Fat Greek Wedding and several others. But what about Jared Hess’ viral cult classic Napoleon Dynamite? How does a first-time filmmaker restricted by a $400,000 budget and just 23 shooting days somehow manage to make a semi-autobiographical movie based on his own experiences and still strike such a major chord among the moviegoing masses?
Seriously, how did such a big-hearted underdog of a movie made on the fly become such a beloved comedic touchstone that spoke to an entire generation? After all, it’s extremely hard to make a bad movie. It’s damn a mini-miracle to make a good movie. Yet, for Napoleon Dynamite,...

Considering Napoleon Dynamite made more than 100 times more at the box office than it cost to make and became a cultural touchstone of its time, it seems odd to be calling the film a cult classic. Yet, 19 years later, the movie now bears that designation, and it does so proudly. Jon Heder, who starred as the title character, explained why he believes Napoleon Dynamite has earned cult classic status. She will reunite with Jon Heder, Tina Majorino, Efren Ramirez and Jon Gries on the pilot, which is now called Cyko Ko: The Animated Series.
The show is based on Rob Feldman’s Ringo Award-nominated comic book, published by Rocketship Entertainment, of the same name. It follows the titular Cyko Ko, a “fourth-wall breakin’, pinball-addicted, cereal eatin’, motorcycle-ridin’ hero” in a campy Saturday morning cartoon–like world.
The series will follow him, sidekick Peachy Keen and their pet Meemop, as he protects the colonies of SuperEarth from giant monsters and crazy characters “in this Saturday morning cartoon-inspired, all-ages title.” Duff will voice waitress Dolphina.
With Duff signed on, the main cast of the web series is now rounded out.
Duff played ‘mean girl’ Summer in 2004 high-school comedy Napoleon Dynamite, and also starred in Seventh heaven.

It sounds as though Napoleon Dynamite 2 could be inevitable at some point. Jon Heder, who played the titular character, said he would enjoy seeing another movie come along. This time, though, it sounds like the idea is to show Napoleon in his 40s facing a different set of challenges. The initial movie became a cult classic even though it didn’t look like it to start with. People swiftly caught on to the strange but comfortable hilarity that the movie provided. It is still hard to explain how it became this popular, but its success cannot be denied. Imagining a

Napoleon Dynamite can add blockchain development to his list of skills. Jon Heder, who portrayed the titular character in a 2004 cult classic, is reuniting with three other cast members from the film for a pilot called Cyko Ko. The animated project and its Dynamite cast will be supported by an Nft drop on Replay‘s Rewarded.tv platform.
Cyko Ko is inspired by a graphic novel written by Rob Feldman, who will serve as the showrunner for the animated adaptation. Both Feldman and Heder have previous experience with NFTs. Feldman tested the Web3 waters with a drop called Cyko Headz, and Heder dropped the “Order of the Tigrons” on the Theta blockchain earlier this year.
Heder is now returning to Theta, where Replay has built its proprietary platforms. The young company — which emerged out of stealth earlier this year, doles out tokens to viewers through a “watch-to-earn” model. To support its financial ecosystem,...

"What do you see in her? She has no horns, no fur." Lionsgate has revealed a trailer for an animated movie titled My Sweet Monster, made in Russia but being released in the US with an English-language voice cast. And guess who they got for the voice?! Yeah it's Pauly Shore (!!) back Again in an animated movie - he's also voicing Pinocchio in the Pinocchio: A True Story movie. This must've been a package deal, there's no other way to explain it. I mean, come on?! In this next movie, the story is about Princess Barbara - who is secretly in love with Prince Edward. But when the sneaky post clerk Weasel demands that the king to marry him to Barbara, she flees. A sweet monster named Bogey does everything in his might to help Barbara save the kingdom. Sounds strange and extremely derivative. The voice cast also includes Hilary Duff and Jon Heder.

Since "Napoleon Dynamite" awkwardly danced into theaters in 2004, tator tots, llamas, and chapstick have never really been the same. It's one of the most quotable movies of all time ("Lucky!") mostly because of its awkward, nonsensically brash sense of humor. Everything about it is weird, and that's why it is so good.
As it is, the movie is pretty perfect. Personally, I can't think of anything else that it would need to be better. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see some of the scenes that didn't quite make it into the final cut. Napoleon Dynamite himself, Jon Heder, talked to the...

The best of the best. While we wait to watch the world's greatest athletes compete at the Beijing 2022 Olympics, we've decided to get in the spirit with some of our favorite movies about, well, sports. Looking for a laugh? You could always watch Will Ferrell and Jon Heder in Blades of Glory, in which they play an unexpected ice skating pair. Now, if you're missing the Summer Games, you could throw on Space Jam, which stars NBA superstar and former Olympic gold...

"Pinocchio is not just a puppet, he's a miracle!" Lionsgate has unveiled an official US trailer for an 3D CG animated movie called Pinocchio: A True Story, originally made in Russia by a Russian filmmaker. This is not the same as the upcoming Guillermo del Toro stop-motion animated Pinocchio movie that was also teased this week. It's the third new Pinocchio movie in the last few years, along with the Italian live-action version recently. This release will be available with an English-language voice cast, featuring Pauly Shore, Jon Heder, and Tom Kenny (of "SpongeBob" fame). Young Pinocchio runs away from his genius creator Jepetto accompanied by the horse Tibalt to see the world and joins the traveling circus run by the hustler Modjafocco. No surprise, this looks awful, with bad animation, a bad story, and bad voice work. Stay away. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Vasiliy Rovenskiy's Pinocchio: A True Story,...

"How long you guys been together, anyway?" Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a holiday romantic comedy titled Funny Thing About Love, from filmmaker Adam White. "We really feel that what the world, and America in particular, needs this Holiday season is a feel-good, witty rom-com." A successful business woman takes her boyfriend home for Thanksgiving only to find her family is scheming to reunite her with her lost love, her other "one that got away." Summer Bellessa stars as Samantha, with a cast including Jon Heder, Barry Corbin, Pat Finn, Jason Gray, and Brooke White. This one belongs on the Hallmark channel, not in any theater. Where’s the Dude when you need him? Bowling alley-set directorial debut would score with more laughs and more feeling
Straight out of film school, aged 22, while her peers were off interning, Kendall Goldberg directed her feature debut, this offbeat, earnest movie about a quarter-life crisis (released in the US in 2018). That’s an undeniably impressive achievement, and the film has some interesting ideas about overparenting and how grown-up kids can buckle under the pressure of Mum and Dad’s expectations. But otherwise it feels a bit generic – shuffling the pack of quirky indie movie cliches, not quite funny enough to be a comedy but with too little authentic emotion to work as drama.
Jon Heder plays Jeff, the manager of Winky’s World, a bowling alley so poorly maintained that it’s acquired a kind of retro-chic. Jeff is an underachiever, a computer science graduate who takes medication for depression and anxiety.

Sundance is the biggest market for indie films around, and for good reason. The festival has a history of finding the quirky, independent crowd-pleaser that goes on to be a box office smash. 2020 saw a record sale of $17.5 million for the Andy Samberg comedy “Palm Springs,” which proved to be one of Hulu’s biggest movies ever. And while some films fizzle at the box office despite their festival hype, many more manage to sustain that buzz all the way until Oscar season. Here’s a few that made a splash at both Park City and for wide audiences. All box office figures are domestic numbers.

The Summer Olympics are just a test of who can run fastest, jump highest, score the most goals. There’s real danger in the winter games! Try skiing down a mountain at high speeds, taking a sled through an icy slide, jumping as far as you can and not breaking your legs on a massive ski jump or not breaking your neck by falling on the ice. The best movies set at the Winter Olympics are about the underdogs who risked their lives and surprised the world…and Will Ferrell sliding crotch first across the ice. But they’re still exciting!

As this writer continues to play post-Halloween catch up with reviews, here’s a look at two films I recently had the pleasure of checking out: His House from up-and-coming filmmaker Remi Weekes and Tremors: Shrieker Island, the seventh film in the Tremors franchise.
His House: After premiering earlier this year at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, writer/director Remi Weekes’ His House is now available to stream on Netflix. By blending together a haunted house story with his poignant examination of the dehumanizing treatment of refugees, Weekes creates a truly haunting experience where trauma and terror manifest in very personal ways, resulting in one of the most harrowing genre films to come along this year.
In His House, we follow Bol (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù), his wife Rial (Wunmi Mosaku), and their daughter (Malaika Wakoli-Agibaba) as they are desperately fleeing a war-torn Sudan in hopes of finding a better life in the U.

Tremors: Shrieker Island is the seventh film in the comedy/action franchise and is the best film since the original Tremors. There have been a few misses in the franchise, let’s not talk about the Cold Day in Hell film, but overall, the franchise has been a fun, light-hearted series that is propped up by Michael Gross’ character of Burt Gummer. While Tremors: Shrieker Island may be the finale to the franchise, it also lays the groundwork for a new direction for the series, if the demand is there.
When big game hunter, Bill (Richard Brake), wants to commercialize the greatest hunt he can imagine, he uses his company, Avex-Bio Tech, to scientifically engineer Graboids on his own private island. For those unfamiliar to the series,...

Tremors isn’t exactly the most critically acclaimed horror franchise, but it’s been going strong since its debut in 1990, and now the latest installment, Tremors: Shrieker Island, previously known as Island Fury, is upon us.
For those who don’t know, the series focuses on battles against the Graboids, a strange species of huge carnivorous sandworms who survived from prehistoric times. In this new film, several Graboids have been captured and illegally transported to a private island by a very wealthy individual looking to genetically modify them in hopes of creating the ultimate in trophy hunting prey. Obviously, though, things don’t go according to plan and it’s up to gun nut survivalist and expert Graboid hunter Burt Gummer to save the day.
If you’ve been excited to see the movie, we’ve got some good news for you, as it’s now available on Netflix to stream.
