My perception of fantasy conventions in the past was that they tend to be more adult-oriented with anime and cos-play, but the Wizard World Austin Comic Con provides a well-rounded experience for families to enjoy together. Until this weekend I had never seen children attending a panel, yet there were several young kids in the Tailchaser's Song Animated Film Sneak Peek session on Sunday. The movie is an animated adaptation of Tad Williams' popular novel about a group of feral cats who journey through the treacherous world of humans and other animals.
Local producer Paul Alvarado-Dykstra and associate producer/writer Bethany Rhoades (pictured above) talked about how this project came to fruition and provided a "behind-the-scenes" look at the concept art of the film. Local animation artist and voice actor Samantha Inoue-Harte -- who was unable to attend due to illness -- brought in Animetropolis, which she co-owns with Alvarado-Dykstra.

Saturday, November 5, 2011 — At Afm In Santa Monica, CA — Animetropolis is pleased to announce that it has engaged Ida (International Digital Artists) as production partner and lead animation unit for its highly anticipated debut film, the CG-animated feature adaptation of Tailchaser’S Song, the acclaimed best-selling fantasy novel by author Tad Williams. Earlier this year, Ida became the first Japanese studio ever nominated for a U.S.Ves (Visual Effects Society) Award for animation, recognized in the “Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Short” category for their ground- breaking Cat Shit One*, which chronicles an intense hostage rescue mission by an intrepid (and adorable) pair of bunny rabbit commandos. “We are thrilled and honored to be teaming up with Ida,” said Paul Alvarado-Dykstra, producer and Animetropolis partner. “We searched long and hard to find the perfect animation studio partner for this project, and Ida couldn’t be a more ideal fit to...

Here's the latest Austin film news, plus an Austin-shot short film at the end.
Ain't It Cool News reports that Austin producer/Txmpa rep Paul Alvarado-Dykstra and local animator/actress Samantha Inoue-Harte have formed a new production company called Animetropolis. Their first project will be producing an animated feature adaptation of Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams. Check out the AICN link above for some interesting concept art for the movie. The Boston Globe and Roger Ebert have both been publicizing the fact that many theaters are now projecting 2D movies using 3D lenses, making the movies look darker and murkier. On some digital projectors, the 3D lenses are very difficult to remove, so theaters don't bother. Now Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League has stepped in to talk about how the Drafthouse theaters, which use the Sony projectors under discussion, deal with the problem. I'm hoping that his article inspires other...

Some big news came out at Houston's Comicpalooza last weekend, and if you're a fan of fantasy fiction, animated films, or both, you'll probably be pretty excited.
Author Tad Williams' 1985 novel, Tailchaser's Song, is being made into a feature-length animated film by Fantastic Fest founder Paul Alvarado-Dykstra and animator/voice actress Samantha Inoue-Harte in partnership with production house Animetropolis. The screenplay was written by Bethany Rhoades and Chris Rydo.
Alvarado-Dykstra and Inoue-Harte made the announcement at a Comicpalooza panel on Friday. Williams was present and quite excited by the project. They brought along some concept art by Matt Rhodes that looks pretty amazing.
Tailchaser's Song was Williams' first novel. He told those gathered at the panel that he came up with the idea by watching his wife's cat. Before he married, he was a dog person, so living with a feline was a bit of a culture shock. As he...

Comicpalooza, the largest comic-con/pop culture event in Texas, is taking place this weekend — but that hasn't stopped the organizers from adding awesome new guests and events to the already-stuffed schedule.
Actress Meaghan Rath, from the hit Syfy series Being Human, has just joined the roster of actors, which already includes celebrities such as Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), Sam Trammell (True Blood), Tony Todd (Candyman), Sean Maher (Firefly/Serenity), Peter Mayhew (Star Wars), Nick Jones (Green Lantern), Jeremy Bulloch (Star Wars) and Marina Sirtis (Star Trek).
For all you Harry Potter devotees, actor Devon Murray has also been added to the guest list. Apparently, Murray is known as Seamus Finnegan in the hallowed halls of Hogwarts. (I've never actually seen a Harry Potter flick, so I have to take their word on this one.)
And fans of sci-fi and fantasy fiction will be thrilled by the addition of Tad Williams,...
