The world was rocked this weekend by the passing of actor Matthew Perry, only 54 years old and best known for his role as "Chandler Bing" on "Friends" — the sitcom for which "popular" doesn't begin to describe its reputation. And yet, Perry could have missed out on the part that made him famous and ended up on the wrong side of a Hollywood "what-if" story. The actor recounted the close call in his memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," published in 2022 and written in a conversational (and occasionally vulgar) style.
Let's set the scene: It's 1994 and Perry has a part in a sitcom pilot. Not on "Friends," but on "L.A.X. 2194." You've probably never heard of it. It's a workplace comedy about baggage handlers at Los Angeles International Airport ... but set in the year 2194. The leads, draped in futuristic costumes right out of "Star Wars," would be handling the luggage of alien tourists.

Matthew Perry, the actor known for playing Chandler Bing on the hit NBC sitcom “Friends,” has died. He was 54.
Perry was found dead Saturday in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times. Authorities found him unresponsive around 4 p.m., and there was no signs of foul play or drugs on the scene.
Perry gained international recognition for his role as the wry, fast-on-his-feet twentysomething Chandler on “Friends,” which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004. He earned a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2002 for his performance on the iconic sitcom. Among the six stars in the “Friends” ensemble, Perry was ambitious as a performer and a producer, but he also grappled with a long struggle with substance abuse that stunted his career. Later in life, particularly with his 2022 book, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir,” Perry focused much of his energy...

When Gilmore Girls fans see Liz Torres, they see Miss Patty. Torres, who portrayed the salacious dance instructor, for all seven seasons, also reprised her role in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Torres seemed born to play Miss Patty, but she was also in a short-lived and long-forgotten Amy Sherman-Palladino project a few years before the premiere of Gilmore Girls. Her character was far less titillating and more practical than the ever-eccentric Miss Patty.

Liz Torres might be best known as Miss Patty on Gilmore Girls, but once upon a time, she played a character named Rose on a short-lived series called Over the Top. Fame showrunner, Amy Sherman-Palladino, served as a producer on the ill-fated series.

There will be no third season for The Mysterious Benedict Society, the adventure series starring Tony Hale. The news, which comes more than a moth after Season 2 ended its run on the streamer, was revealed by co-creator/executive producer Phil Hay on Twitter.
“Dear friends- season 2 will mark the end of The Mysterious Benedict Society’s journey on Disney+. We love everyone who helped make this truly special and indeed life-affirming experience happen. No regrets- so proud of what we made!, Hay wrote. “The beauty of streaming is that the show lives on Disney+ and you can find it whenever you want to visit. Spoiler alert for how the story ends: the kids stay friends forever.”
Based on the bestselling YA book series by Trenton Lee Stewart, The Mysterious Benedict Society was originally greenlighted by Hulu and was one of the last series developed and sold by the late producer Jamie Tarses.

“Sex and the City” without the sex? Well, that’s what creator Darren Star worried about if the series ended up on network TV.
ABC courted Star and “Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell to greenlight the series about four single women — played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis — seeking love in New York City.
“I wanted to do a show that felt more like an independent film made for TV — R-rated and adult, very frank and honest about sexual relationships,” Star said in new book “It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO,” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin, out now.
Author Bushnell remembered running into Jamie Tarses, the then head of ABC’s entertainment division, in Bridgehampton while on rollerblades. “Candace!” Bushnell recalled Tarses yelling from her car. “We really want to buy this at ABC. We really do.

The island experiment is over as Amazon has canceled its Prime Video series The Wilds after two seasons. According to Deadline, the cast and crew of the young adult survival series were informed of the decision on Thursday, July 28. The teen drama debuted on December 11, 2020, and earned a quick renewal following a positive fan response. The second season was released on May 6, 2022, and the fate of the show remained in limbo until now. Created by Sarah Streicher and developed and produced by the late Jamie Tarses, The Wilds centered on a group of teenage girls who are left stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash but are unaware they are the subjects of a social experiment. Season 2 introduced a group of teenage boys that were part of the same experiment on another island — the season ended on a cliffhanger bringing the two groups together. The cast features Sophia Ali,...

“The Wilds” will be taking off from the runway for Season 3: Prime Video has canceled the popular YA survival series after two seasons, TheWrap has confirmed.
Season 2, which expanded the show’s narrative with the addition of an all-male high school “control group,” premiered on the streamer May 6, delayed by two-and-a-half years as a result of the pandemic.
Despite having premiered a year earlier, the series has drawn comparisons with the Emmy-nominated “Yellowjackets” (which began development and shooting on its pilot around the same time in 2020) for its focus on a group of girls who get stranded following a plane crash. That’s where the two shows’ similarities end: The misfortune the high schoolers in “The Wilds” face stems from a larger conspiracy experiment led by Dawn of Eve founder Gretchen Klein (Rachel Griffiths), who posits that women can run a better society against all obstacles. It's game over for The Wilds.
Deadline reports that Prime Video has canceled the buzzy drama after two seasons.
The series burst onto the screen in 2020, landing a speedy renewal and rave reviews.
As the first YA series on the streaming service, it broke through in a way many shows that followed it did not.
However, the second season premiered in May, failing to reach its predecessor's success.
Season 2 of The Wilds continued to follow the harrowing ordeal of a group of teenage girls stranded on a deserted island, and they didn't end up there by accident - they've secretly been recruited into an elaborate social experiment.
The season ratchets up the drama by revealing that the girls aren't the only ones being studied... there's a new set of subjects, an island of teenage boys, who must also fight for survival under the watchful eye of the experiment's puppet master.

Producers of the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony honored almost all of the expected people who died this past year. Who was not featured during the emotional In Memoriam segment Sunday night on CBS? Prominent performers and character actors such as Frank Bonner, Sean Connery, Michael Constantine, Abby Dalton, James Hampton, Bruce Kirby, Norman Lloyd, Helen Reddy and Jane Withers were not part of the 49 people included.
While over 100 celebrated television people died since last year’s event in mid-September of 2020, the segment generally only makes room for less than 50. Among those featured Sunday night: TV Academy Hall of Fame members actor Ed Asner, production designer Roy Christopher, actress Cloris Leachman, writer/producer William Link and actress Cicely Tyson. Current nominee Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm Macdonald sadly passed away this month as well.

The first season of “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” which is currently rolling out on Disney+, will stick to the source material provided by Trenton Lee Stewart’s beloved kids book of the same name, according to series creators Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. But should the series continue into another season, that might not remain to be the case.
“The subsequent books are all wonderful, and they’re very different, too,” Hay said in an interview with TheWrap. “So if we were lucky enough to continue and get another season, I think it would likely draw from a lot of them in different ways, as opposed to being very, very specific.”
Hay and Manfredi said they hope to draw from all of the sequels (as well as Stewart’s prequel novel) for future episodes, mixing and matching elements rather than doing a straight adaptation.

Tony Hale has identified the only people who don’t love “Arrested Development”: Mr. and Mrs. Hale, his parents.
For Mother’s Day, Jimmy Kimmel had celebrity guests read real tweets from their mom. Here’s the one Hale read for the ABC late-night host: “Hey son, our new friends are Loving ‘Arrested Development. We still don’t get it.”
Happy Mother’s Day.
Kimmel asked Hale, who stopped by on Thursday to promote his new Disney+ series “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” if that was really real.
“My parents think ‘Arrested’ is dumb. To this day, they think it’s a stupid show,” Hale responded. “I’m not kidding. The only episode they thought was funny was when Martin Short was on. [My dad] was like, ‘Well he’s funny. That guy’s funny.'”
They’re not huge “Veep” people either, it turns out.

For decades, a TV rite of passage took place every September at the Hollywood Radio & TV Society’s entertainment presidents’ luncheon. On the eve of the fall season, the three, then four, then six heads of programming at the broadcast networks would gather on the Hrts dais and set the tone for the year: They’d share insights on the freshman shows they were keen on, which potential hits they wished they could steal from a rival and the latest trends to look out for.
Those were the days when entertainment presidents were practically household names — figures like Fred Silverman, Brandon Tartikoff, Bob Iger, Leslie Moonves and Warren Littlefield. It was the perch that almost everyone in TV aspired to, the job of being one of the most powerful buyers in the biz.

Every year Hollywood looks to the Producers Guild Awards winner to forecast the Best Picture Oscar. That’s because in the 12 years since both groups expanded their top award list and adopted the preferential ballot, only three times have the winners not aligned — PGA winners “1917,” “La La Land” and “The Big Short” did not land Best Picture.
Those differences made sense, as in each case a smaller, lower-budget movie took home the Oscar over a movie of scale and scope. And as expected, this year’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of a Motion Picture went to Chloé Zhao’s magic-hour road trip “Nomadland,” as voted on by the guild’s 8,000 members. Searchlight’s frontrunner looms large in a field of small movies, as it keeps racking up wins on its way to multiple Oscars come April 25.

The Producers Guild of America Awards awarded Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” with their top prize, one of the key indicators for the Academy Awards, particularly the best picture category. Edging out its closest competitors including Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” this might just end any questions about whether or not the moving drama is running away with the Oscars’ big prize.
All the acceptance speeches were pre-recorded with “Nomadland” giving a more produced, glitzier presentation than what we’ve seen at other award shows.
It should be noted that last year’s “1917” from Sam Mendes lost the Oscar after wins from PGA and DGA to “Parasite,” which only had the coveted SAG cast ensemble prize under its belt. Coincidentally, “Nomadland” is not nominated at SAG in their top category, leaving an opening for...

Jamie Tarses, the TV executive and producer who was the first woman to head a Big Three network entertainment division, was remembered Monday by former colleagues and television executives as a gifted, whip-smart “force of nature” who forged a path for others in a male-dominated industry.
Tarses died Monday at the age of 56. Her passing shocked the industry as she came up the ranks and remained a respected figure among the generation of industry executives who came up in the 1990s.
Tarses is credited with helping to pave the way for other women at the top of TV. Walt Disney Television chairman Dana Walden and 20th Television president Karey Burke both hailed Tarses as a mentor. Tarses “shattered stereotypes and ideas about what a female executive could achieve, and paved the way for others, at a cost to herself,” said Burke.

One of the last series produced by Jamie Tarses, who passed away this morning at the age of 56, was Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds. It premiered when Tarses was in a coma following an early fall cardiac episode that ultimately led to her death.
The Wilds, Amazon’s first YA series, was a breakout hit and was quickly renewed for a second season. And while Tarses was not able to celebrate the show’s success, her input played a key part in it from the start.
Created by Sarah Streicher, The Wilds was originally ordered to pilot in the spring of 2018 as one of new head Jennifer Salke’s first greenlight decisions.
“I’d never had a pilot produced before, so I felt like a babe in the woods through every step of the development process,” Streicher recalls. “But Jamie had strength and wisdom to spare, and she gave of it so liberally,...

It’s hard to believe now, but it took until 1996 for the broadcast networks to finally hire their first-ever female entertainment president, when ABC recruited Jamie Tarses away from NBC to take the job. There had been a handful of other women in powerful slots, including Lucie Salhany, who was briefly chair of the Fox Broadcasting Co. before launching Upn. But until streaming upended the business, “entertainment president” was the most visible, and arguably the most important, leadership job at a network. And until Tarses, it had been all men.
Tarses’ rise at ABC coincided with the start of my career as a cub reporter, covering the network TV business in Los Angeles, and one of my first duties was to chronicle the tenure of the young trailblazer. But from the start, Tarses was faced with many in Hollywood looking to tear her down — be it rivals jealous of her age,...
