Some of the best Christmas gifts I received as a youth were graphic novels. Before the days of digital comics this was the only way for me to have a complete story set, and since they were expensive I would put two or three on my Christmas list. Here is part 1 of what I consider important comic graphic novels for collectors and new readers.
Daredevil: Man Without Fear
For those who are fans of the Netflix series or want to be introduced to Frank Millers best work this is the series to start with. Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. worked collaboratively together to bring Daredevil to the forefront of the Marvel Universe. This is a reincarnation of Matt Murdocks origin story that makes him a flawed hero.

The first trailer for Captain America: Civil War has finally landed, and boy is it a fan pleaser. We see Cap and Iron Man facing off, an emotional reunion between Steve and Bucky, the Black Panther is revealed at long last, and that’s before we see the footage of Winter Soldier and Cap double-teaming Iron Man. In case you haven’t guessed, it’s amazing.
This movie is a big deal. Civil War is the long awaited adaptation of Mark Miller’s era defining Marvel crossover event. First published in 2006, Miller’s story saw battle lines being drawn that split the Avengers and the Marvel Universe on a whole pitted against each other in an ideological struggle in which there was no clear right or wrong. The story has been adapted for the screen by the Russo brothers, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and will...

Jon Kondelik and his brother James Kondelik are releasing a second trailer for The Divine Tragedies, today. A Dual Visions production, The Divine Tragedies takes a chapter from the 1920s Leopold and Loeb murder case, in which two men tried to get away with murder. In this update, Charles (Graham Denman) and Thomas (Jon Kondelik) are two brothers, who target a vulnerable, single mother. They believe their wits will win the day, until Detective Homer Gaul (Ken Foree) enters the picture. A true visual marvel, the second trailer shows more of the film's story, characters and dangerous situations. As well, the producers, along with director Jose Prendes, have unveiled several more posters. In quad form, the graphics host quotes from early film reviews. Matt Boiselle (Dreadcentral) and Mark Miller are quoted and both film critics enjoyed the surreal atmosphere of the film. All three new quad posters can also be seen here.

According to Da7e Gonzales of Latino-Review, film producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach plan to milk the Spider-Man universe for all its worth by creating a feature-lenth spy-thriler based on a young pre-Aunt May. Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker. The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying “classier Agent Carter” without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series. We know May Reilly Parker-Jameson as Aunt May, the sweet elderly woman that took care of Peter Parker after the death of her brother-in-law Richard Parker and his wife Mary. In 2003, Mark Miller wrote Marvel Comics' Trouble, which was a five-issue mini-series that presented an alternate past for May, Mary, Ben and Richard. The big twist, Richard...

The long-fabled director’s cut of Clive Barker‘s Nightbreed finally saw release this past week via Scream Factory’s beautiful new Blu-ray, and those of us who’ve been eagerly awaiting it since 1990 have one person to thank for it. That one person is Barker, obviously, as he not only wrote the short novel “Cabal” but also adapted it into a flawed but fun film filled with untapped promise. There are others beyond Barker, though, who deserve our gratitude as well. I’m talking about the fans. In the two plus decades since Nightbreed‘s release, rumors of additional footage fueled our imagination, and the more optimistic among you — because no, I did not believe this day would ever come — kept the hope alive online and at genre conventions. As more and more of that footage was rediscovered, and as “the Cabal Cut” made its way around the country, the...

Pinhead has become the hunted in Boom! Studios’ Hellraiser: Bestiary miniseries, but the holder of the Lament Configuration is fighting like hell to keep his pins from being plucked by poachers. In the fifth issue, due out in December, the head Cenobite receives aid from a surprising source, while the notorious puzzle box makes the rounds at a hospital, and we have a look at two covers for the next installment.
“Over the past three years, Clive Barker has re-imagined the Hellraiser mythos as only he could, building a long-form narrative that became one of the best-received horror comics in recent memory. Now, the Master of Horror takes us into his Bestiary for an anthology series—free of continuity, but full of shocking consequences. Last week was moving week. It’s been a little hectic. It’s cool though, because if my plans go through the way I want them to, you’ll have more Comic Execution than you can handle in about a month. Here’s a hint: Fire & Stone.
Regardless, this week’s column is extra long to make up for last week’s absence. It’s probably not much consolation for you but hey, at least I acknowledge my failures by overcompensating?
Helraiser: Bestiary #1
Writer: Ben Meares, Mark Miller, Victor Lavalle
Artist: Conor Nolan, Colin Lorimer, Carlos Magno
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain, Michael Garland
Publisher: Boom! Studios

Later this month, we’ll see the release of a brand new Hellraiser comic book mini-series. This time, the series will go with an anthology format, giving us new tales in the Hellraiser universe from a variety of popular and upcoming writers. The first issue contains the start of a six-part serial written by Mark Miller and Ben Meares, where a group sets out to steal Pinhead’s pins, and I caught up with both of them for the latest installment of our Q&A series.
We’ve seen a number of limited Hellraiser comic book series from Boom! and Clive Barker. How did the idea for this anthology series come about? Was it something that you pitched to Clive?
Ben Meares: Hellraiser, in my mind, has always had a certain magic to it because the rules of the mythos can be applied to almost any kind of story.
Mark Miller: Right.

Last year at San Diego Comic Con, Scream Factory announced that they would be putting out Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed on Blu-Ray. Let’s be honest, it rocked horror fans’ socks off. A year later, Scream Factory announces the details about the release of two editions and some of those same fans are complaining about the price tag for the limited edition. I just want to preface this article with the fact that this knowledge that I have gained over the years of not only being a fan of the genre but dealing with studios and knowing some of the ins-and-outs of home media distribution. I don’t work in the industry, I just deal with it for this site and with my own local theatrical program, Late Nite Grindhouse. So, none of this is inside information with Scream Factory and while I have reviewed one product they have sent me,...

A while back it was announced that Scream Factory would finally be bringing the “Cabal Cut” of Nightbreed to home video. Fans have begged for this release for a long time, so the excitement levels were high. A bit later, it was revealed that it wouldn’t actually be the Cabal Cut, but a new, director approved Director’s Cut of the film. Some were angry that it wouldn’t technically be the cut of the film that they wanted, but after a quick explanation, I was convinced that this would be superior. This is a new director’s cut of the film approved by Clive Barker. The reason the Cabal Cut isn’t what’s being released, is that basically, it’s the kitchen sink version of the film. Everything available was compiled to comprise the Cabal Cut, so the film is being whittled down, so that we still...

In October’s last weekend, Beyond Fest was taken over by Clive Barker. Making just his 8th trip out of his house in the past two years, the wildly popular and influential horror author and artist arrived in Hollywood to screen his Nightbreed, given the subtitle The Cabal Cut to distinguish itself from the castrated version that found itself in theaters in 1990.
After an arduous search led by producer Mark Miller, long-lost footage from Clive Barker’s original shoots was found, and has been compiled into this two hour and 20 minute “kitchen sink” version that throws every snippet of film into the cut. The result is a long film, with at least 45 minutes of never-before-seen footage, all of which is “VHS quality” (the worst fate any movie could ever have). It’s disjointed and discordant to jump from normal quality to the dark, crackling, and fuzzy “new” footage. It adds another level to the experience,...

In some cases, a soundtrack can take a game from being good to great. We’ve already heard from creator of the Kick-Ass comics Mark Miller and now it’s the turn of the three main cast members. We were there to witness some of the final battle sequence which takes place in the Red Mist’s (now The Motherf*cker) evil lair. The good guys were all dressed in their superhero outfits, with the bad guys looking particularly vicious, welding steel bars and readying to take their positions for what will undoubtedly be an epic battle in the finished film.
We got to see a few takes where Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s stunt doubles went head to head. Not long after this, those same men were both outside gasping for air as the wet suit and the brand new leather fetish suit modeled by The Motherf*cker were beginning to take their toll! Chloe Mortz Hit Girl was also on the stage,...

Exclusive Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut Interview - The Scream Factory Comic-Con panel dropped huge news for Clive Barker fans last week when it was announced that they’d be releasing Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray. In an exclusive interview with Daily Dead, Russell Cherrington, Mark Miller, and Michael Plumides discuss their work on The Cabal Cut, teaming up with Scream Factory, bonus features, and where you can catch a screening of the movie later this week:
Congratulations on getting The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray.
Mark Miller: First let me say, this is an incredible time for Seraphim Films. We have worked closely with Morgan Creek on bringing the Cabal Cut to the world, and upon hearing the news that a deal had been struck with Shout Factory, we were overjoyed. The fruits of our labors have finally paid off. We eagerly await the next chapter in this saga.

Scream Factory had an exciting announcement for Clive Barker fans during their Comic-Con panel tonight. We previously told you that there has been a push to get Clive Barker’s extended cut of Nightbreed on Blu-ray and it’s now official.
While this was just an early announcement, we expect The Cabal Cut blu-ray to receive the Scream Factory collector’s edition treatment, which would include a new HD transfer and an extensive set of bonus features. Here are details on the work that went into originally putting The Cabal Cut together:
“Ever since it was first released, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed has been the subject of much debate. For nearly twenty years now, there have been stories of more Nightbreed, missing scenes, and special edition releases. These stories have always been conjecture and hearsay. Until now…

Universal Pictures' Friday panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 covered two upcoming sequels: "Riddick" and "Kick-Ass 2."
"Kick-Ass 2" appeared first, with Christopher Mintz-Plasse (The Mother F***er), Aaron Taylor Johnson (Kick-Ass), and newcomers to the series Lindy Booth (Night B****), Donald Faison (Dr. Gravity), and John Leguizamo (Javier) taking the stage.
Screenwriter Jeff Wadlow and "Kick-Ass" comics writers Mark Miller and John Romita, Jr. were there as well, and Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl) even joined via satellite. The main cast members' arrivals were accompanied by a video that spliced together footage from the original film with new shots from the sequel.
"This is a blast," Romita says of making the film and being at Comic-Con.
"Kick-Ass 2" will depict the possibly epic battle between Mintz-Plasse's villainous character and those played by Moretz and Johnson. The sides of good and evil form their own eccentric teams, "The Mother F***er...

Over the past few years, Mark Miller has established a close working relationship with Clive Barker: he’s the co-head of Barker’s production company, Seraphim Films; he served as assistant editor on Barker’s third Abarat novel, Absolute Midnight, and is editing the author’s eagerly-anticipated book The Scarlet Gospels; and he’s been instrumental in getting the director’s cut of Barker’s film Nightbreed in front of audiences.
On the comics front, Miller wrote several issues of the latest incarnation of Hellraiser for Boom! Studios, and is now co-writing a just-announced new series with Barker called New Genesis, about a man who claims he is God returned to Earth. Even with this obviously busy schedule, Miller was kind enough to take a few moments to chat with FEARnet.com about the new series.

Clive Barker and comics books have a very long history of harmonious co-existence. We've seen plenty of Hellraiser, etc., splashed across illustrated pages, but now it's time for something completely different. The genesis of a new property, if you will.
USA Today is reporting that Barker and Boom! Comics have gotten together to launch an exciting comic property called New Genesis. This will be the first original comic created and written by the horror master. Featuring art by Haemi Jang (Hellraiser: The Road Below), the 12-part series is the Old Testament of the Bible in present day, "if God were to come back and tell you how we all got it wrong and what everything really meant," says co-writer Mark Miller.
"We're making something that is a radical re-reading of ancient structures. It does have the word Genesis in the title, after all. That should be a dead giveaway," adds Barker,...

Last week, Boom! Studios officially announced the relaunch of their Hellraiser comic book with Hellraiser: The Dark Watch. The new series will be co-written by Witch Doctor‘s Brandon Seifert, who is also working on the miniseries Hellraiser: The Road Below. I recently had a chance to catch up with Brandon and asked him about the miniseries, working with Clive Barker, and what we can expect from The Dark Watch:
How did you become involved with the Hellraiser comic book series? Did Boom! and Clive reach out to you because of your work on Witch Doctor or did you reach out to them?
Brandon Seifert: Last year, I put out Witch Doctor with Lukas, and Boom! saw it, liked it, and emailed me asking if I could do a story for the Hellraiser Annual in April. Out of all stuff that Boom! does, Hellraiser was what I...

In a surprise move that may not be that huge of a surprise, Matthew Vaughn has decided not to helm X Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to his X Men: First Class. No word was given for his departure –though he may still stay with the project as a producer- but Vaughn has been known to be very picky on the projects he does do. He was close to dropping out of Kick-Ass before changing his mind and then opted out of the sequel, which is currently filming under the helm of Jeff Wadlow.
According to Deadline, his replacement might be Bryan Singer, who launched the movie franchise back in 2000 and has remained with the property through the years. Vaughn, who wrote the treatment for the sequel that is scripted by Simon Kinberg, would now step back as producer, along with Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.

Angelina Jolie won't be be returning to life for the long-delayed "Wanted 2," but the writers have revealed some new plans for the film. Director Timur Bekmambetov's 2008 film adaptation of the hardcore comic book from "Kick-Ass" writer Mark Miller "Wanted" grossed $134 million in the U.S., and a sequel seemed like a no-brainer. When Universal first started getting serious about a sequel, it was unclear whether Jolie would return, although it didn't seem very likely. Now, the screenwriters have revealed where they're planning to go without Jolie on board. In the film, Jolie played Fox, a veteran assassin who helped guide...

Fans of Nightbreed and Clive Barker have been excited about The Cabal Cut, an extended version of the movie that has been screening at a couple of recent horror conventions. We have good news from Clive Barker, who let everyone know that Morgan Creek gave them permission to raise funds for a Blu-ray release:
“My friends, Clive here, writing to share some wonderful news. Following the two Sold Out screenings of Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut on Sunday, Morgan Creek has given us permission to show the cut around the world and to raise money to prepare the cut for a release on Blu Ray.
This could not, would not have happened without your voices. We have all been heard. The Morgan Creek team have my thanks and my respect. Very seldom does anyone in the movie business pay attention as they have, understanding perhaps that the message of the...

This is major. Clive Barker's film Nightbreed is famous for being butchered at the last minute by 20th Century Fox. Besides trimming out all the violence (which is usually almost a character in and of itself in any Clive Barker film), the hacks also saw to it that the role of Suzi Quatro (best known as Leather Tuscadero from the show Happy Days) wound up completely on the editing floor. Well Nightbreed has undergone a complete restoration! Can you take 155 minutes of Barkeree goodness?! Restoration Director Russell Cherrington and Seraphim Films Creative Executive Mark Miller will be on hand to discuss their plans for bringing NightBreed The Cabal Cut to BluRay and DVD. Also screening is Hellraiser. In short this is as Barkerlishus as it...

Director Matthew Vaughn has acquired the movie rights to Mark Millar’s Superior comic book. Matthew Vaughn previously adapted Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass comic book, bringing it to the big screen (reviewed here: Kick-Ass (2010) Movie Review). The Superior comic book is about “a young boy living with multiple sclerosis who is given the opportunity to transform into his idol, a superhero from the big screen.”
Initially, this is what Mark Miller had to say about Superior‘s film right’s acquisition:
Basically, my kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has bought the movie rights to Superior from me and Leinil Yu and Leinil and I am also teaming up with the Ms Society, who want to use the character as it’s the first superhero with multiple sclerosis. 2 big stories in one. Vaughn and I have hinted at this for about 18 months, but this is the first we’ve ever confirmed he’s bought the rights.

Comic book creator Mark Miller (Kick-Ass, Wanted) updated his official site with a few words about superhero films, especially "The Green Lantern," which will likely lose hundreds of millions of dollars for Warner Bros. "The non-Batman DC characters just don't seem to work in modern cinema and TV," he wrote. "I've loved these characters as far back as I remember, but whether it's 'Wonder Woman' or 'Superman' or the 'Aquaman' pilot or 'Catwoman' or 'Jonah Hex' or 'Birds of Prey' or whatever... they just don't seem to catch on in the modern world." Millar went on to say that the biggest issue with characters like "Green Lantern" is that they are simply not believable in the live-action format. "Batman works because he's more human for the big screen and more empathetic, but I fear 'The Flash' and others would just meet the same fate as 'Green Lantern,'" he explained.

"This month marks the 35th anniversary of the release of Alan J Pakula's film version of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's nonfiction book, All the President's Men," begins Marc Savlov in the Austin Chronicle. "It was one of the best of a handful of films in the crusading reporter subgenre and one that not only has withstood the test of time but also, rewatched today, provokes this thought: 'What the hell has happened to the Fourth Estate?'"
In a sidebar, Savlov notes that the film will be screening this afternoon at the Lbj Library Auditorium. Thursday sees two panel discussions, "Could the media break a story like Watergate today?," with Woodward, Bernstein, Peter Baker of the New York Times, Dana Priest of the Washington Post and Mark Miller of the Texas Tribune, and then later the same day, a discussion of the film with Woodward, Bernstein and Robert Redford.

Want to know what's in store in this year's X-Men: First Class? Well, it will almost certainly bring us some Havok.
The character of that name - played by Lucas Till - is shown here in a new image sent to us today by 20th Century Fox. He stands in an underground chamber surrounded by fire that may well be of his own creation.
Havok - whose real name is Alex Summers and who is the brother of Cyclops - has the power to absorb naturally occurring cosmic rays and discharge the energy from his body as destructive blasts.
It's an ability he struggles to control so maybe he is practising and honing his abilities in the scene shown here, which could well depict an early version of the X-Men's classic training area known as the Danger Room.

We've been waiting endlessly for the great Clive Barker to finish up the final chapter in his literary Hellraiser saga, The Scarlet Gospels, which finds Pinhead going one-on-one with Harry D'Amour, and now finally ... there's light at the end of the tunnel.

These days it seems almost every week brings a new Mark Millar project. Earlier this month it was announced that the excellent Kick-Ass is to get the sequel treatment – Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the wall. Before that word leaked that Millar had quietly signed a movie deal on his new comicbook, Superior and not long before that we reported Tony Scott is to direct a project based on another of Millar’s works, entitled Nemesis.
Now Millar is talking up his directorial debut, Miracle Park.
Miracle Park follows the recent trend of mature and gritty superheroes set in a world grounded more firmly in reality. Mark Millar describes the project as “The X-men meets Trainspotting”.
And while that may paint a picture of drug abusing Scottish heroes to some, it refers to the gritty nature of these “heroes” who curse and cross the line, behaving in ways and involving themselves...
