When Robin Fleming posted on her LinkedIn that “the first 90 days as CEO of Miss America Organization has been a whirlwind,” she wasn’t lying. Over the past six years, America’s oldest beauty pageant nearly crumbled under the weight of its former executive leaders. In 2017, CEO Sam Haskell, once exalted for reviving the program to its glory days as must-see TV, was revealed to have been sending disparaging and misogynistic emails about the weight and sexual history of past winners. Former Miss Americas Regina Hopper and Gretchen Carlson (Fox News host from 2005-16) were brought in to salvage the fallout through an extensive rebranding called Miss America 2.0 and instituted one significant change: nixing the bathing suit competition. Their impact was short-lived: After public accusations by the 2018 Miss America Cara Mund of alleged bullying, Carlson stepped down in June 2019. Hopper, then president and CEO, resigned six months later. As the...

Just two weeks ago, Gold Derby’s odds did not predict “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” would receive an Emmy nomination for Best TV Movie. But now, NBC and Peacock’s warm-hearted holiday telefilm has jumped up to the fourth-place position to win the category, behind likely challengers “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” “Prey” and “Fire Island” (see chart below). Just how much farther will producer/actress Dolly Parton climb in our racetrack odds before the Emmy nominations are announced on July 12?

In the past decade or so, the television movie has been thought to possibly be dead. But don’t tell that to producer Sam Haskell, who won an Emmy for producing the 2021 television film “Dolly Parton’s Christmas On the Square.” In an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby (watch above), Haskell declares, “The TV movie is back!” He is back in the Emmy race this season as the executive producer of two films: “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” for Peacock and “A Waltons Thanksgiving” for The CW.
Both of Haskell’s films focus on the joy of the holiday season. For “A Waltons Thanksgiving,” a reimagining of the classic, Emmy-winning series,, the focus is on the Walton family encountering a troubled youth who will change the family forever. In “Mountain Magic Christmas” the focus is on the inimitable Dolly Parton and her struggle to put on a Christmas show that will lift audiences’ spirits.

“I feel like it’s something that’s really needed during this time,” declares Tena Clark, one of the composers for the television film “The Waltons: Homecoming.” The film is a remake of 1971’s “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” the television movie that spawned the CBS drama that ran for nine seasons and won 13 Emmy awards. Check out our exclusive video interview with Clark and co-composer Tim Heintz above.
The project came to the composers through their friendship with the film’s executive producers Sam Haskell and Hudson Hickman. “We all have something very strong in common, and that is that we’re all from Mississippi. So we have this Mississippi bond,” explains Clark. Though the composers were excited about the opportunity — both were fans of the original series — they were initially concerned with the short time frame in which they had to work. “I loved ‘The Waltons’ as a kid, and every time on Thursday that we heard the music, we all rushed to the living room to sit down in front of the television,” reveals Sam Haskell. He returned to the nostalgia of his childhood favorite series to produce the popular TV movie “The Waltons: Homecoming,” which aired this past November on The CW Network. In our recent webchat he adds, “Two and a half years ago, we started working on the rights, going to the family. Earl Hamner‘s wife Jane is now in her 90s, and they have all these attorneys around them protecting it. I spoke to everyone single one of them.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The two-hour film aired during the 2021 Thanksgiving holiday and featured Emmy-winning actor Richard Thomas, who played John-Boy in the original CBS TV series that premiered in 1972 for nine seasons and launched six more reunion movies.

There seems to be a yearning for nostalgia in entertainment these days, given that our daily headlines are rarely upbeat and heartwarming, what with the country’s deeply ingrained political divisions as well as the ongoing threat of the Covid-19 pandemic. That might be why TV execs have been capitalizing on their audience’s hunger for comfort viewing with revivals of hits from past, ranging from “Sex and the City” and “Dexter” to “The Wonder Years” and “Gossip Girl.”
However, this holiday season will get a one-night only treat when the CW presents a new version of an early ‘70s classic, “The Waltons’ Homecoming.” The two-hour film that airs on November 28 at 8 p.m. features actor Richard Thomas, who played John-Boy in the original CBS TV series that premiered in 1972 for nine seasons and launched six more reunion movies for NBC. The Walton family is back for the CW’s The Waltons’ Homecoming, premiering Nov. 28, and Richard Thomas — the original John Boy Walton — is celebrating the new chapter. Thomas will serve as the narrator on Homecoming while passing the baton to Logan Shroyer, 2021’s John Boy.
Thomas reflected on what the world was like when the original CBS series about faith and family aired from 1971-82 and why now is the perfect time to bring it back.
“When we did the series originally, this country, we were very split because of all the issues going on.” He said during a press Zoom chat Wednesday. “The line went right down the middle of the dinner table, a lot of the time. It was the beginning of a sort of balkanization where the demographic was split within the household. There were more televisions. So one of the great things about the show was that it brought people together.

Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square was just “a perfect little storm,” executive producer, star and composer Parton said during a panel for the Warner Bros Television movie at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event. “Who knew that when we were creating this movie, that it would be aired in the middle of the pandemic, and it would bring so much joy and so much hope to millions of people around the world? I think that was one of greatest gifts that we gave and didn’t even know quite when we were doing it that we were going to help uplift the world.”

Netflix wants you to have a very Dolly holiday — Dolly Parton that is.
The streamer dropped a trailer for its upcoming original holiday movie musical, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” on Wednesday, featuring the legendary singer-songwriter’s vocals to get everyone in the mood for a small-town winter adventure.
“Christmas is a time for sharing, knowing you’ve been blessed,” Parton sings before being revealed on-screen in a glittery, glowing white ensemble.
“Who are you?” Christine Baranski’s character asks her. “What do you want from me?”
Parton replies that she’s “Angel” and she wants “change.” This is because Baranski’s character, the rich Regina Fuller, returns to her hometown after her father’s death to evict the townspeople and sell the land to a mall developer.
“The deadline to be out of your homes is now Christmas Eve,” Regina tells the citizens — while they are in church,...

“We should all walk humbly through this life, but if there’s ever been anyone who deserves a ‘thank you’ or pat-on-the-back, it’s Dolly Parton,” declares Sam Haskell, executive producer of the Netflix anthology series “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “She is an international icon beloved by the world because she loves the world back.”
Parton, Haskell and the producing team debuted the eight-part series last November. Each episode is based on a story from one of her songs, including “These Old Bones” starring Kathleen Turner and Ginnifer Goodwin, which is entered this summer on the Emmy ballot in the TV movie category. He says that Netflix jokingly refers to their movie as “Blonde Mirror” after successfully entering “Black Mirror” in this same category the past few years.

June 1, 2019 marks the official 10-year anniversary of the William Morris Agency-Endeavor merger. As part of Deadline’s coverage of the milestone, we reached out to John Ferriter, former Wma Evp/Worldwide Head of Non-Scripted TV, who was the only board member in either company who voted against the merger. He was let go from Wme, triggering a $25 million lawsuit against the agency, which was eventually settled. He now runs managing and production company The Alternative, which he launched in 2015.
Here is Ferriter’s first-person account in vivid detail — some of it never before revealed — of the events leading to and immediately following the merger, as well as his take on it 10 years later. He chronicles the internal discord at Wma and the maneuvering by the Endeavor leadership that allowed the storied, 111-year-old agency to be taken over by a scrappy and aggressive upstart. He also addresses his Wme ouster...

NBC is returning to the beauty pageant arena.
The network has announced that it will air the 2020 “Miss America” competition, snagging it from ABC. NBC was the home of “Miss America” for two decades, and it also previously aired rival competition “Miss USA.” However, the Peacock decided to dump the latter competition series in 2015, due to the racist remarks made by then owner Donald Trump during the early stages of his Presidential campaign.
“Miss America,” which is currently chaired by Gretchen Carlson who won the crown in 1989, has undergone upheaval in recent years, dismissing its CEO Sam Haskell in 2017 over leaked emails he sent containing sexist comments about previous contestants.
The pageant has also gone through a rocky ratings period in the last couple decades. In 1997, ABC picked up the series, only to see its ratings steeply decline (nearly 50% during its nine-year run), before dropping it in 2005. “Miss America” then entered a broadcast wilderness,...
