Black voices have always been essential to American cinema, but they’re especially potent this summer, with two exciting upcoming releases: Boots Riley’s “Sorry To Bother You” and Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” have impressed critics and magnified the beating pulse of black identity politics, while skewering those persons and institutions that hinder black social and economic advancement. Though vastly different in tone and technique, they echo similar themes: Black American political disillusionment, the struggle for higher standards, and the pressure to maintain an authentic version of oneself.
With these potent ideas playing out at movie theaters across the country, we’ve arrived at a perfect opportunity to examine the best black American films of the 21st century.
From renowned stories and landmark performances to culturally relevant comedies and iconic directors, each of these movies have molded the landscape of black cinema into what it is today. Dee Rees, Ava DuVernay,...

BBC iPlayer original comedy drama The Rack Pack tells the story of Alex “Hurricane” Higgins and snooker's exploding 1980s popularity…
“Colourful” is the preferred press euphemism for describing lives like that of snooker’s Alex Higgins. The “bad boy” of the game, he was a genius on the baize who drank, smoked, snorted and head-butted his way to world champion status and back. Talk about colour. As the tabloids tell it, Higgins’ story is a nothing short of a kaleidoscope.
It’s harder to describe his 2010 death as similarly vibrant. Higgins died broke and alone, wilfully starving in sheltered housing after throat cancer left him toothless and skeletal.
That’s the bit of these stories we prefer to ignore. Stories of men like Higgins and his Belfast contemporary George Best, whose talent comes packaged in a personality that erodes it. Men whose self-destruction isn’t just tolerated by their public but celebrated.

White; from an original story by White and Taylor Hackford Oscar Movies Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, Ray Taylor Hackford's prosaic biopic Ray offers no more than a superficial look at the life and career of legendary singer and composer Ray Charles. I say "superficial" in that Ray may show Charles' stand against racism, in addition to his many women and drug abuse, but director-writer Hackford, co-screenwriter James L. White, and star Jamie Foxx ever so politely steer clear of Charles' psyche, obviously fearing his inner demons — if really let loose on screen — would have frightened, repelled, and/or angered potential patrons. Thus, like Martin Scorsese's The Aviator that same year, Hackford and White make use of pop psychology to explain — or rather,...

Snooker legend Alex Higgins died from malnutrition after refusing to eat, according to pal and fellow hellraiser Jimmy White. The former world champion was found dead at his home in his native Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday, July 24. He was 61.
Higgins had appeared in public earlier this year looking a shadow of his former self following a lengthy battle with throat cancer. But fellow snooker star White insists the heavy smoker and boozer did not die because of the illness but because he wouldn't eat and kept himself alive by drinking Guinness.
He explains to Britain's Daily Mirror, "He died from lack of nourishment. We've lost a genius and one of the greatest champions of the game." White claims Higgins weighed a dangerously low 84 pounds (38.1 kilograms) after losing his appetite and teeth through cancer treatment.
He adds, "In the end it wasn't cancer that killed him, the cancer had gone,...

Kim Woodburn faced down an army of gnawing green ants, cockroaches, spiders and yabbies as she entered the John T-Ravolting tank. After Gino D'Acampo and Jimmy White managed to secure main courses and desserts for a special dinner, the How Clean Is Your House? star was responsible for winning the camp's starters. Electing to go for all three starters and two treats, Woodburn endured ten minutes of critter hell as various creatures slowly filled to each part of her perspex case. Cockroaches and crickets were placed onto her right leg first. "They've got into my knicker leg, one's on my bum, this is not right you know, they do nip you know, they stink and this is only the beginning." Green ants then poured onto her left arm. Knowing that the insects can bite, Wood said: "They are sharp, it's like small knives going in. It's like (more)...

Jimmy White was second up to face the last bushtucker trial as the final three celebrities competed to win a special meal for their farewell dinner in camp. After Gino D'Acampo won the group a main course each, White was charged with securing their three deserts. Preparing for his challenge, the former snooker champion was locked into a chamber with leg irons, handcuffs and a waist belt. Five keys were dropped into the chamber and he had to unlock each of the padlocks around his arms, legs and waist. The first three locks successfully freed would bag a desert for each of the celebrities and, if he managed to unlock the remaining two, would also get two personal treats. Heavily restrained inside the chamber, the task began. Immediately, water started flooding in as a key (more)...

The four remaining celebrities have taken part in bushtucker trial favourite Hell Hill in an attempt to win dinner for their last supper together. The campmates were given three wetsuits and rubber boots prior to the challenge. Kim Woodburn was unable to join in for medical reasons, but decided to go along as their cheerleader. The contestants were instructed by Ant and Dec that they had to each carry a star through a river infested with snakes and large eels, clamber up a water-logged and slippery hill, all before placing it on a post. Each celebrity had to keep hold of their star until the trial was over to win a meal for camp. After a brief discussion, Jimmy White decided that he would take the closest post, Justin Ryan would take the middle, while Gino D'Acampo would go for the long shot. "If you don't get those two stars,...

So, Sam Fox got herself evicted from the I’m A Celebrity jungle. She was the third celeb to leave after a three-way eviction with Sabrina Washington and Jimmy White.
She might not have won the 2009 series, but in my humble opinion, Samantha Fox totally reinvented herself in two weeks in the jungle. Let’s take a retrospective look at her career to see what I mean…
The Glamour Years
Ah, Sam. I remember her Page Free days well. Didn’t fancy her though, I was more a Kathy Lloyd man myself (look her up, gents), but the Sam Fox of Page 3 was a brassy, fun-lovin’ gel as you can see from the picture.
It was the topless modelling that made Sam a household name. But I think the public loved her…

After a literally vomit-inducing task last night (you never looked better, Kim), we’re back for some more culinary adventures courtesy of those psychotic producers of I’m A Celebrity.
And it looks like the post-Jordan peace has finally broken. Who’s in the middle of this catfight? Sabrina and Woodburn, naturally. Not taking sides, but I’m pretty sure whatever it was, it was Kim’s fault. Here we go…
Actually, it looks like the root cause is that the three potential evictees are nervous about getting booted tonight. The tension’s bubbling over after the phone lines got re-opened for Jimmy, Sam and Sabrina.
Jimmy, by the way, is the favourite to go tonight. Dull snooker players finish last and all that. I’m joking of course, but some of the foliage in the camp has shown more charisma than Mr White.
Jimmy volunteers for the next bushtucker trial.

Dear ITV
I know I gave you a tough time about involving Katie Price in I’m A Celebrity. But I was right and you were wrong.
Tonight’s episode (liveblogged here) was brilliant. 100% focussed on the remaining contestants, I found myself feeling sympathy for Stuart and secretly hoping that he and Sabrina share a romantic moment in the days to come. I warmed to George Hamilton and marvelled that Bugner and Woodburn have settled down a bit and aren’t so abrasive to the others.
Jimmy White still seems a bit pointless, but he’s such a groovy, laid-back dude I can’t dislike him. Gino is a legend, so utterly entertaining in every way (a possible winner?) And Colin and Justin are such an adorable couple…I’m a wee bit sad they got split up. Well, not totally sad – Justin was my favourite, so I’m glad he’s still in there.

Howdy, Unreality TV readers! We’re planning a night of I’m A Celebrity fun and games and wouldn’t it be cool if Alex Reid showed up in the jungle anyway and proposed to Sam Fox instead?
Yes, we’re resuming our liveblog after a hard-partying weekend and two-day hangover. Yes, Unreality TV was very drunk, did some dancing and needed a couple of early nights to recover! All the same, we’re devastated that Lucy Benjamin got her ass voted out of the jungle.
So, bear with me as I get reacquainted with the camp and work out who I love and who I just like as friends.
First task…
Let’s cut straight to the first task – Stuart Manning and Gino Di Unpronoucable elect themselves. It’s a good job Jordan isn’t still around, because there’s no way in hell she could fit her ginormous...

Friday night, and the relentless blogging of I’m A Celebrity continues apace. Your comments, as always, are appreciated.
Thankfully, after a false start over the last few days, Celebrity actually started to get interesting last night with some bitchy moments between Kim and Justin and some full-on craziness from Joe Bugner, who is fast becoming the ‘legend’ of the 2009 series. George Hamilton is still excused from being interesting on medical grounds.
And so we join the camp(s). The luxury camp are waking up blissfully rested, while the exiles are looking groggy and rough. SamFox has got a tic, and it’s not a nervous one. Stuart Manning has a little rummage in his nether regions for bugs. It’s important to check that regularly anyway, readers.

Welcome back for another evening of bitching about Katie Price. Sorry, I mean live coverage of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, the longest titled show on TV at the moment.
First off, Camilla Dallerup has walked out of camp. Hopefully ITV get a return of a portion of her fee, since she completely failed to entertain us. Just getting that off my chest.
Kim’s snoring
George complains about Kim’s hog-like snoring. Actually, he calls her a water buffalo. Even Gino can hear the snorting sound from outside the caravan Kim and George are sharing.
Jut noticed – George looks a little bit like Archie Mitchell on Botox. Doesn’t he?
But the salacious Hamilton revelations continue – he tells us, sensationally, that Elizabet Taylor doesn’t snore. Fantastic. I’m sure that just radically altered the public perception of the serial divorcee. Wonderful George – have a...

Soap star Lucy Benjamin and snooker player Jimmy White were successful in the first celebrity chest task of the series. The duo were challenged to pour water into a bucket, using a rope-controlled long piece of wood. When the bucket was full, an attached key was lowered towards them. Both celebrities got drenched by falling water, but the duo triumphed in the challenge and headed back to camp with their first chest. "It was harder than it looked, I got saturated. So did Jimmy but we got there in the end," said Benjamin. White added: "I didn't get it straight away, Lucy thought it was a swing." When they (more)...

Viewers have complained about the treatment of horses in an I'm A Celebrity challenge during Sunday night's opening episode. Camilla Dallerup, Justin Ryan, Stuart Manning and Jimmy White were asked to ride into the Australian jungle for their first group task. However, only Ryan had previous experience of working with the animals and the celebrities struggled when they had to take the animals across a river. Readers of Horse and Hound magazine and Digital Spy forum users have expressed concern about the treatment of the animals, with many claiming that they looked in distress. "It [the use of horses] was absolutely disgusting," said one Horse & Hound reader. "They had four 'celebrities' ride horses across a river. The horses had to swim and the terror was evident in their eyes as they struggled with the current (more)...

Ah jaysus is there no let-up this evening? Welcome to our live coverage of the I’m A Celebrity 2009 launch night!
Yes Anthony and Declan are Back! The kangaroo balls are in the frying pan. My favourite gay interior designers are in a helicopter and that rancid attention-seeking freakbag is returning to the jungle. Yes, Miss Price, I’m talking about you.
Ok, things kick off with the celebs meeting up on a yacht. First we see Sam Fox, then Colin and Justin. Then awful Kim from Kim and Aggie the famous scrubbers. She’s followed by Gino Unpronouncable, a TV chef I’ve never heard of. Then Lucy Benjamin (I quite fancy her, though she looks more grey than blonde tonight), then Stuart Manning off Hollyoaks and Mis Teeq singer Sabrina Washington. She’s pretty. Then 80’s snooker ace Jimmy White.
Some dancer, Camilla Dallerup, who’s defected from Strictly to the ITV.

The I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! contestants have arrived at their camp. Apart from Gino D'Acampo and Sam Fox, who had been chosen to camp overnight on an island, the celebrities were split into groups to travel to their new home. Jimmy White, Camilla Dallerup, Stuart Manning and Justin Ryan made up the first group and soon learned that they would have to ride horses to get to the camp. "We were standing there, we didn't know what was happening, and then all of a sudden a guy came up from the hill with four horses," Manning said. "The first thought when I saw the horses was 'sore arse', because they're not going to take us a short way." Ryan revealed that he had ridden before, but Dallerup admitted that she had fallen off a horse at the age of five. "If you'd asked me last week...

11 brand new celebrities entered the Australian rainforest kicking off the ninth series of I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here! which starts on ITV1 at 9pm on Tonight!.

Former glamour model Katie Price, has reportedly been paid £350,000 for a return to the I’m A Celebrity jungle.
The huge fee is bound to upset the other celebrities taking part, many of them are being paid a fifth of Katie’s fee and arrived in the jungle days earlier than her. Katie was seen jetting out of London’s Heathrow airport last night.
A pal of one of the other contestants – told The Sun: “This really is taking the Mick.
“We were pushing for more cash but were told things were tight this year. Now we know why.
“If ITV are looking for trouble in the jungle, they will certainly get it once she turns up.”
Also said to be appearing on the ITV reality TV show are Ex-EastEnder Lucy Benjamin, How Clean Is Your House star Kim Woodburn, former glamour model Sam Fox, TV makeover couple Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan,...

Snooker star Jimmy White has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of trying to get a friend to take the penalty points that he received for speeding. The six-time World Championship finalist is thought to be on the verge of a driving ban, according to the Sunday Mirror. White's car was allegedly snapped speeding in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, leading to a ticket being sent through the post. It has been suggested that the 47-year-old passed on the penalty points and fine to a friend who lives in Jersey - where British driving endorsements do not count. Officers are investigating whether the sports personality is guilty of perverting the course of justice. A police (more)...

We've just been sent info on a new British film which is set to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on 5th October after a week long run at the Apollo West End from the 25th September. I've placed the trailer for the movie after the jump. It's well worth checking out.
The movie is a British independent film based on the graphic novel by Paul Tanter called 'Jack Said'. The movie has an excellent cast which includes Danny Dyer, Simon Phillips, Terry Stone, David O'Hara and Jimmy White (yes, the snooker player!) and is directed by Lee Basannavar and Michael Tchoubouroff.
Read on for the synopsis and trailer or check out the brilliant 'Jack Said' website here.

According to Variety, the young actor has been tapped to play legendary Olympic gold medalist Jessie Owens in an untitled biopic from Milkshake Films' Mike Jefferies and Matt Barrelle (Goal!).
