Clay McLeod Chapman's What Kind Of Mother: "Since making his horror debut with The Remaking in 2019 and its follow-up Whisper Down the Lane in 2020, Clay McLeod Chapman has become known as “one of horror’s modern masters,” and “the real deal” when it comes to “high-grade horror”. In 2022, he cemented this reputation with his “legitimately terrifying” third novel Ghost Eaters, a “thoughtful and smart (if grim) exploration of how addiction destroys lives,” that “should make Clay McLeod Chapman a star,” (Vulture). Now, Chapman returns with What Kind of Mother, an unyielding blend of domestic suspense and supernatural horror that results in a visceral exploration of parental grief.

Widow's Point is a horror film based on a best selling book. The book was written by both Billy and Richard Chizmar, with Gregory Lamberson (Slime City Massacre) adapting the book for screen. This title was shot in Dunkirk, New York. And, the story focuses on a horror writer, who holes up in an old, haunted lighthouse. Hoping for a decent publicity event, Thomas (Craig Sheffer) finds a more supernatural force waiting for him. Also starring KateLynn E. Newberry, a new trailer was released for Widow's Point and the clip can be found here. As well, sales agent Devil Works has debuted a new film poster, for the film. The graphic shows the central setting, an old lighthouse. Below, a red garbed spirit homes in on the light as a white fog fills the background. Easily one of the wildest and darkly funny stories I’ve read throughout all of 2018 is The Special, from co-writers James Newman and Mark Steensland. A cautionary tale about “too much of a good thing” that morphs into an oozing and cringe-worthy story of body horror, The Special is not only celebrating its recent release, but the story has also been nabbed by filmmaker Harrison Smith for his next feature to boot.
I recently had the opportunity to catch up with both Steensland and Newman, asked them about coming up with the story of The Special, some of their influences and their experiences working together, and what’s next for them as well. And for those of you who are into genre-bending stories that beautifully blend humor and horror, you can purchase The Special on Amazon Here.

“Sometimes being alive feels like a long game of chicken on a badly-lit road.” -- Michael Marshall Smith, from the introduction to Ps Publishing's Christine Love for Stephen King’s 1983 haunted car story has always seemed a little light on the ground. It’s not that anyone ever hated Christine; it’s just that the passion with which readers discussed classic novels like The Stand or The Shining or recent books like Bag of Bones or 11/22/63 seemed to pass Christine by. During King’s most popular decade, the novel failed to hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list (though #2 isn’t exactly a struggle for chart success.) Literary critic and King expert Dr. Michael R. Collings once referred to Christine as a “minor” novel, especially in comparison to the major statement of Pet Sematary, also released that year. Yet in the thirty-plus years since the book was published, Christine has become a cultural touchstone.

Most mainstream readers had been waiting a long time for the two books coming out in 2013. Early the year before, news leaked that publisher Hard Case Crime would release a new book called Joyland as a paperback original, just in time for summer. Anticipation was cautiously high; reviews of King’s last book with the publisher, 2005’s The Colorado Kid, were mixed. Readers seemed far more eager for a book King announced way back in 2009; Doctor Sleep, King’s long-gestating sequel to 1977’s The Shining, was due to arrive in late fall. But beyond these splashy new novels, King was as busy as usual, writing and publishing at a frantic (some might say lunatic) pace. King launched the year doing something that was becoming a trend: unearthing long-buried work from the past and bringing it into the light. “The Glass Floor” first appeared in the sixth issue of Robert A.

[For anther perspective on this historic collection, read Blu Gilliand's review of Turn Down the Lights here.] In October of 2013 – mere months ago – editor Richard Chizmar spontaneously decided he wanted to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Cemetery Dance magazine with an anthology, and that he wanted to bring his friends in horror along with him. The fact that, in mere weeks, Chizmar was able to assemble a collection that included new work from writers like Stephen King, Jack Ketchum, Peter Straub, and Clive Barker, merely cements the ongoing importance and vitality of Cemetery Dance. Turn Down the Lights functions as both a celebration and a summation; aptly, quite a few of these stories are about endings, quiet and loud. Stephen King’s “Summer Thunder” kicks things off with a bleak slice of post-apocalypse. While King has been exploring the end of the world for six decades now – from 1969’s Stand prologue “Night Surf” to, most recently, 2008’s “Graduation Afternoon” – he continues to find new angles of interest.

In December of 1988, Richard Chizmar decided to publish a horror magazine called Cemetery Dance. A few months later, he did. In October of 2013, Chizmar decided to publish an anthology called Turn Down the Lights celebrating the 25th anniversary of the magazine. A couple of months later, he has. Chizmar, clearly, is not the kind of guy to back away from a challenge. It’s that kind of attitude that’s enabled him to build a veritable empire on the foundation of that first issue of Cemetery Dance, and to turn that unlikely name into a recognizable, trustworthy brand. That first issue of Cemetery Dance featured a lot of names new to the horror genre, some of whom would go on to carve out big careers, some of whom would fade into obscurity. There are no obscure names in Turn Down the Lights – this is the cream of the horror crop,...

Pitcher Orel Hershiser and the Los Angeles Dodgers had beaten the Oakland A’s in five games to win the World Series. People were waiting in line at movie theaters to watch Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Tom Clancy’s The Cardinal of the Kremlin and Anne Rice’s The Queen of the Damnedwere atop the bestseller lists. The most acclaimed genre books of the year were Thomas Harris’s The Silence of the Lambs and Peter Straub’s Koko.

My advance reading copy of Shivers VII didn’t include an introduction, and the table of contents gave no indication there would be one added to the finished and published edition. I’ve gotten used to anthologies leading off with some sort of mission statement or manifesto (sometimes, these missives are better than the stories that follow), but I guess hitting the seventh entry in a series indicates you know what you’re doing, and readers should know what to expect. After plowing through the 26 stories in Shivers VII, I’d say agree that no introduction is necessary. Like the six volumes before it, this is an anthology of rare quality, a collection of contemporary fiction that provides an excellent snapshot of where the genre stands today, and a roadmap to where it’s going. However, it’s important to remember where the genre came from even as it continues to move forward,...

Before 1967, Stephen King was not a professional author. Certainly he was a writer; according to his memoir On Writing, King had been writing since 1953, when he was six. He’d also been published, sort of. After a series of self-published works like People, Places, & Things (with friend Chris Chesley) and The Star Invaders, and stories in his brother’s newsletter, Dave’s Rag (Rush Call, Jumper), King placed stories (The 43rd Dream, Code Name: Mousetrap) in his high school newspaper, The Drum. He achieved his greatest success in 1966 with I Was a Teenage Grave-Robber (later published as In a Half-World of Terror) in the fan publication, Comics Review.
In 1967, however, King made his first professional sale. King’s short story, The Glass Floor, appeared in the sixth issue of Robert A.W. Lowndes’ pulp magazine, Startling Mystery Stories. Lowndes had made a name for himself in the realm of speculative fiction,...

I was fortunate to read a small mountain of amazing fiction in 2012, but 2013 has the potential to top it with ease. In addition to the books listed below (which I would not be surprised to find sitting in my Top 10 at year’s end), there’s plenty of stuff coming by authors I’ve just discovered, not to mention all of the surprises that the year no doubt holds. In other words, we’ve got a lot to look forward to – here’s just a taste of what I’m anticipating as the new year approaches.
NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (April 30) (William Morrow)
Joe Hill continues to solidify his voice with each passing project, and what I’ve read about NOS4A2 leads me to believe he’s fully embracing his horrific roots while putting his own gleeful spin on the genre’s tropes. The book is about Charlie Manx,...

Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast, the feature film debut of screenwriter, director, and actor Sam Qualiana, has been acquired for worldwide distribution by Independent Entertainment, part of the Alternative Cinema network. The deal includes DVD, VOD, cable, and digital downloads.
“This is a real achievement for everyone involved with Snow Shark,” says Gregory Lamberson, one of the film’s producers. “As many filmmakers have come to realize, the market for independent genre films is brutal, and obtaining distribution can seem like an impossible goal. We’re thrilled to be working with Independent Entertainment and the wonderful people at Alternative Cinema. I know they’ll give this film the tender loving care it deserves.”
Other Alternative Cinema brands include Shock-o-Rama Cinema, Seduction Cinema, and Camp Motion Pictures. The company offers Lamberson’s first three films, Slime City, Undying Love, and Naked Fear on the two-disc DVD Greg Lamberson’s Slime City Grindhouse Collection.

Recently, I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of Shivers VI edited by Richard Chizmar from Cemetery Dance Publications. Oh man, it is good. Damn good. I am so excited about others getting to read Shivers VI. This has got to be the most perfect anthology I have ever read! Bar none. Hands down. Amen. Each story is unique and well told. In fact, every tale is a journey that I wouldn't mind reading a whole novel of (and some that I really and truly wish were full length novels). It is too bad that only Peter Straub's piece, "A Special Place: The Heart of a Dark Matter," has a novel that is connected to its included story. Prior to reading Shivers VI, the...

Producer Greg Lamberson dropped us a line to let us know that principal photography has wrapped on Sam Qualiana's Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast up in the Buffalo area, and he also provided us with a half-dozen new behind-the-scenes stills.
From the Press Release: Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast, the feature film debut of 25-year-old writer/director Sam Qualiana, has wrapped production in Lockport, New York, outside Buffalo. Qualiana originally made a Snow Shark short seven years ago, when he and his brothers attached a shark fin to their dog. After winning the Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival’s “Filmmaker to Watch” award for his short crime drama No Road Out, he decided to remake the Snow Shark short using the skills he had developed in the intervening years. Reaction to the project was so positive he turned it into a feature instead and started shooting on weekends, before the script was completed,...

Finally, after a summer from hell (for most of the Us anyway), there is a chill in the air, the leaves are changing colors and Halloween, our favorite holiday, is almost here. So, in the spirit of the season, here are some new Halloween titles (as well as a couple of classics) you might want to pick up at your local bookstore.
How to Be a Zombie: The Essential Guide for Anyone Who Craves Brains by Serena Valentino. From the author of the Nightmares & Dreamscapes series of graphic novels, including 1140 Rue Royale, comes this hilarious and colorful book on how to become a zombie. With chapters ranging from "What Is Your Zombie Archetype?" and "Living with Humans" to "Zombie Fashion" and "Essential Zombie Films", this little (144 pages) book would make an excellent prize at your Halloween party. Horror fans love this time of the year. For those of us not living in La, there's the chill in the air, the colorful leaves, pumpkins everywhere, dead cornfields to explore … if you dare. So, in honor of Our official holiday, I have come up with a list of books and some movies every horror fan should at least take a look at, if not outright add to your book or DVD library.

When a TV series whose broadcast run got nipped in the bud re-emerges on DVD in its entirety, the hope is always that it will allow for the discovery of buried treasures. This is particularly so in the case of Fear Itself, since each of its 13 episodes was helmed by a different director, and only eight got aired before NBC quietly dropped it from the schedule in summer 2008.
Lionsgate’s new four-disc set, however, reveals that Fear Itself’s best stuff actually did make it to the tube the first time around, most notably the contributions by genre faves Stuart Gordon and Larry Fessenden. You can check out our previous reviews of the original eight via these links:
The Sacrifice/Spooked/Family Man In Sickness And In Health Eater New Years Day Community Skin And Bones Overall, the truncated season was a mixed bag, and the five entries newly visible...

Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison have acquired an untitled comedic script by Johnathon Schaech, Josh Wolf and Richard Chizmar that explores an incident in the life of ex-Baltimore Orioles player Rick Dempsey, whose Little League coach turned out to be a bank robber. Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company is going to tell a story about Orioles baseball player Rick Dempsey-- but it won't have anything to do with Dempsey's World Series experience, or his adult life, for that matter. The story pitched by Johnathon Schaech, Josh Wolf and Richard Chizmar comes from Dempsey's childhood, in which his Little League coach turned out to be a bank robber. Schaech, who you might remember as the egotistical frontman of The Wonders in That Thing You Do!, told Variety ""Our pitch was, it's Catch Me if You Can meets Bad News Bears with a touch of Bad Santa. " And there will be a World Series in the film after all! The coach, John Jennings, led Dempsey's team to the Little League World Championship in 1963, before doing jail time for his life of crime. There's so many random names attached to this project that...

Adam Sandler's Happy Madison and Columbia have brought the rights to one of those true stories that seems to have been made for the movies. Based on the life of former Baltimore Orioles baseball star Rick Dempsey, it's the tale of a Little League coach who turned out to be a bank robber.Little League is, of course, the none-more-American phenomenon whereby young kids get used to a competitive sports by playing in a children's baseball league. Many a star got his start there, including Dempsey, whose coach John Jennings was a star on the field - leading his team to a Little League World Championship in 1963 - but also a bank robber off it.The film got its start when Rick Dempsey sat down for a chat with lifelong Orioles fan and improbably handsome That Thing You Do! star Jonathan Schaech*, who then wrote this script with Richard Chizmar and Josh Wolf.

"Fear Itself" should be pretty fresh in your minds considering it's hitting DVD soon with some very bitchin' artwork. The short-lived show was like the unofficial third season of "Masters of Horror". For various reasons it was pulled before it could run its final five episodes. FEARnet is out to fix all that.
Starting on September 2nd the final five will begin being aired. Below you'll find a synopsis of each episode and when you can tune in to see them.
"Something With Bite," directed by Ernest Dickerson (NBC’s "Heroes"), is a reinvention of the classic werewolf story from writer Max Landis ("Masters of Horror"), the son of John Landis ("An American Werewolf in London"). When a veterinarian (Wendell Pierce, “The Wire”) is bitten by a large, strange animal brought into his clinic, he begins to see the world and his stale life differently. Paula Jai Parker (“Side Order of Life,...
