On Friday, Crowded House dropped their eighth studio album, Gravity Stairs, and to promote the release, they stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform the single “Teenage Summer.”
Taking the Jimmy Kimmel Live! stage, the band delivered a solid rendition of the breezy, nostalgic song, with a shimmering 12-string guitar leading the arrangement. As the momentum built, an electric guitar line provided a counter-melody to the lyrical refrain “Are we gonna have some teenage summer?/ Am I gonna have some mad idea?” ultimately reaching an anthemic climax. Watch the video of the performance below.

Pearl Jam appeared The Howard Stern Show this week, where they not only shared fascinating stories — like how drummer Matt Cameron once got a cease-and-desist letter from Kiss — but also performed a number of songs, including tracks from their new album Dark Matter and older hits like “Daughter” and “Yellow Ledbetter.”
The appearance was in support of the band’s 12th LP, Dark Matter, which debuted last week on April 19th and has earned praise from many, including Stem himself, who called it “a phenomenal fucking album.” When asked to perform a track from the record, Pearl Jam chose the opener, “Scared of Fear,” delivering the song’s heavy feel with uproarious energy.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their 2024 tour with a blazing 29-song performance at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night. It marked the band’s first performance since Springsteen was forced to postpone the remainder of the band’s 2023 tour due to a bout with peptic ulcer disease.
Thankfully, The Boss now appears to be fully recovered. The 29-song set stuck closely to the epic shows Springsteen played towards the end of his 2023 run, including performances of “Night,” “Darlington County,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Mary’s Place,” and “Backstreets.” Once again, the encore proved particularly stellar, featuring “Born To Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.”

Dream pop stalwarts Cigarettes After Sex have announced their third album, X’s, due out July 12th via Partisan Records. They’ve also announced an extensive arena tour in support of the impending release.
X’s is Cigarettes After Sex’s first album in five years, and finds vocalist and principal songwriter Greg Gonzalez touching on the sounds of ’70s and ’80s slow-dance pop ballads. As with previous Cigarettes After Sex albums, the lyrics revolve around romance and intimacy, and Gonzalez explores the rise and fall of a four-year relationship throughout.
“The record feels brutal,” Gonzalez says in a statement. “I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn’t scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it—in a good way. I...

Amber Bain (aka The Japanese House) recently paid the NPR offices a visit for a Tiny Desk Concert, during which the June 2023 CoSign alum performed highlights from her fantastic sophomore effort, In the End It Always Does.
The UK singer-songwriter marked her appearance at the Tiny Desk by swapping out some of the synth sounds on In the End for soft, sweeping arrangements with brushed drums and a violin, aided occasionally by resonant piano and baritone sax sounds.
The set opened with a stripped-down, intimate version of “Sunshine Baby,” before moving on to a performance of “Baby Goes Again.” A quick tuning of her guitar led into the keyboard-driven tune “Over There,” before wrapping up the set with the album single “Boyhood.” As the concert came to a close, Bain’s “thank you” to the audience was barely audible over booming rounds of applause.

Bruce Hornsby and the experimental chamber ensemble, yMusic, have come together to form a new project, dubbed BrhyM. They’ll release their first album, Deep Sea Vents, on March 1st via Zappo Productions / Thirty Tigers. As a preview, the lead single,”Deep Blue,” is out today.
First meeting at the Eaux Claires Festival in 2016 — where they performed back-to-back sets — Hornsby and yMusic have been collaborating for several years now, releasing tracks and appearing live together. Deep Sea Vents, though, will be their first full-length collaborative effort, and if the single “Deep Blue” is any indication, fans can expect the album’s 10 tracks to present inventive arrangements, blending funk, folk, soul, and orchestral instrumentations.
For example, “Deep Blue” is carried by its funky bassline, but colored by melodic interjections from pianos, strings, and even an electric sitar. Speaking about the track Hornsby said: “yMusic may be the funkiest, groovingest chamber group in all the land!

Johnny Marr teamed up with a 30-piece orchestra for the first of a two-night homecoming run in Manchester, England.
Across a 16-song setlist, the British guitar icon reimagined songs from his solo repertoire along with classics from The Smiths and his dance project with Bernard Sumner, Electronic. Highlights included “How Soon Is Now?,” “Easy Money,” and, of course, “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” during which Marr paid tribute to his late Smiths bandmate, Andy Rourke, who died this past May.
Speaking about the experience, Marr said that he couldn’t “help feeling a little bit emotional” hearing his songs receive symphonic treatment. “I’ve had two experiences of playing with an orchestra — Hans Zimmer, obviously, and also with Pet Shop Boys — but to actually sing in front of an orchestra playing my own work, that’s a first,” he said (per NME). “It’s been really enjoyable working on the arrangements.

Highlights included “How Soon Is Now?,” “Easy Money,” and, of course, “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” during which Marr paid tribute to his late Smiths bandmate, Andy Rourke, who died this past May.

The rights to Stephen King’s 1979 novel, The Long Walk, have been acquired by Lionsgate, and according to new reports, the project is set to be adapted into a film directed by Francis Lawrence.
Previously, a movie based on The Long Walk was in development by New Line Cinema with André Øvredal attached to direct, but after the rights lapsed in the summer of 2022, work on the project was abandoned. Now, Lionsgate has picked up the dystopian story, and will bring it to life, with Lawrence directing and producing a script by Jt Mollner (Outlaws and Angels). Roy Lee (2017’s It) will produce as well.
Lawrence is fresh on the heels of his latest release: the latest Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which debuted earlier this month and has grossed north of $200 million so far. In a statement, Joe Drake, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group,...

Some folks weren’t as thankful as they should’ve been for Dolly Parton’s halftime show during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game last week. But her younger sister Stella Parton came to her defense in a scathing tweet Sunday (November 26th), calling out those who weren’t pleased with our recent cover star rocking a cheerleader costume.
“I personally thought my big sister Dolly was cute as hell in her Dallas Cowboys cheerleading costume at the half time show on Thanksgiving,” Stella wrote. “To those of you being so critical of a 77 year old kicking up her heels, I say fuck yourself. Shame on you not her.”
In the middle of the Cowboys’ turkey game showdown against the Washington Commanders, Dolly sang classics like “Jolene” and “9 to 5” as well as covers of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” in support of her new album Rockstar.

At 77 years young, Dolly Parton has earned the highest-charting album of her legendary career with Rockstar. The star-studded rock ‘n’ roll project debuted this week at No. 3.
Though she’s landed on the chart 49 times in the past — the first time being in 1969 — Rockstar marks Parton’s highest-charting album to date. She previously achieved two top 10 albums, with 2014’s Blue Smoke and 1987’s Trio (her collaborative LP with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris) both peaking at No. 6.
Rockstar was inspired by Parton’s 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and dropped on November 17th. With a tracklist of new originals and classic rock covers, the album features appearances by rock icons like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, Sting, Steve Perry, Steven Tyler, and many, many more. Demand for The Hives has gotten so high that they just can’t keep up. Err, at least that’s the reason the band gave when they announced that they are now accepting applications for folks to start officially-sanctioned The Hives cover bands. That’s right: The Hives are franchising themselves.
“[We] can no longer keep up with public demand for concerts… Q2 and Q3 reports both point to the need for a new solution to this problem,” a humorous Instagram post from the band read. “We have now after much sighing and woe come up with what we think is the most elegant solution. We need several The Hives…. You can now start your very own The Hives and put on a show!”
The announcement post went on to state that “rules and regulations” would apply “upon application,” and included a link to a page on the band’s website...

Rockstar, the star-studded rock’n’roll album by our November cover star, Dolly Parton, has arrived. Stream it below.
Inspired by her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Rockstar is the 49th full-length release from Parton, and features a variety of new originals and classic rock covers, as well as a heap of guest appearances by artists like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, and many more.
Speaking with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for Consequence’s most recent cover story, Parton explained that when she found out she was voted into the Rock Hall, she “didn’t feel like [she’d] earned it.” To make up for that, she got into the studio and cut a proper rock album, without cutting any corners. “That was important to me: not to half-ass do a record that’s a country girl singing some rock,...

The Hives were the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night (November 15th), performing “Bogus Operandi,” a single from their new album The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons.
The Hives’ Kimmel performance was expectedly energetic, with all the members sporting their matching lighting bolt-emblazoned suits. Frontman Pelle Almqvist kicked and flailed about — going so far as to even climb into the studio audience seats at one point — while the rest of the band members rocked out in the purest form.
Watch The Hives perform “Bogus Operandi” on Kimmel below.

Most homes aren’t equipped with the type of stereo system that’ll best suit Oppenheimer, but Christopher Nolan has one piece of advice for those wanting to watch the film in their living room: Buy the Blu-ray instead of watching it on an “evil streaming service.”
Nolan attended a recent Los Angeles screening of his latest movie, during which he spoke in more depth about the craft that went into it. He harped on all the extra time and energy spent on creating the Oppenheimer Blu-ray, so that each bomb test sounds as authentic as possible.
“Obviously Oppenheimer has been quite a ride for us and now it is time for me to release a home version of the film. I’ve been working very hard on it for months,” Nolan said [via Variety]. “I’m known for my love of theatrical and put my whole life into that, but, the truth is,...

The Killers have announced a new best-of compilation album, Rebel Diamonds, set for release on December 8th via Island.
Rebel Diamonds will pull together a total of 20 tracks across all the studio albums in The Killers’ discography, from Hot Fuss to Pressure Machine. What’s more, it’ll boast a brand new song called “Spirit,” which press materials describe as an “anthem ready to be sung at festivals across the world.”
In addition to their greatest hits like “When You Were Young,” “All These Things That I’ve Done,” “Human,” and, of course, “Mr. Brightside,” Rebel Diamonds will also feature some deeper cuts that the band also consider essential to their catalog, like “Be Still” and “Dying Breed.” Arranged in chronological order, the record is a useful tool in reflecting on the band’s evolution over the years.
