The first solo album from former Slayer guitarist Kerry King is basically the “Still D.R.E.” of thrash metal.
But where Dr. Dre wanted to remind his fans that he was still puffin’ his leafs, still fucking with beats, and still not lovin’ police after close to a decade’s absence, King wants his fans to understand that even though Slayer are essentially hellbound, he’s still Satan’s preeminent ambassador with furious, jagged riffs and sweet nothings like “Crucifixation” and “Everything I Hate About You.” On From Hell I Rise,...

When Slayer announced that they were unexpectedly reuniting to play music festivals this fall, the timing appeared to upstage guitarist Kerry King‘s then-just-announced debut solo album, From Hell I Rise.
In a new interview on Sirius Xm’s Trunk Nation, King was asked about whether the Slayer reunion had a positive or negative impact on promo for his solo album and subsequent tour. He was quick to clarify that the upcoming Slayer dates are one-offs, and the reunion won’t extend beyond the occasional live appearance.
“I see it both ways,” said King [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “We’ve [Slayer] been turning down offers for the last four years. Unfortunately, when the right offer came around, this one, it was right as my project was releasing. So there’s certainly people, like my management and booking agents, who say, ‘Oh, that’s great. Slayer stunned fans earlier this year when they announced they’d be reuniting for three festival gigs this fall. Among those who were surprised was Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, who says he messaged Slayer axeman Kerry King and told him, “Thanks for making me look like a liar.”
The timing of Slayer’s announcement was especially surprising considering that King had just unveiled details of his eponymous solo band, including a debut album, From Hell I Rise, set to arrive May 17th, and a summer tour supporting Mastodon and Lamb of God. Slayer’s reunion gigs will follow in the fall at Riot Fest, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock.

Last week, Slayer announced their unexpected reunion in the form of two major festival appearances.
The news came just five years after the thrash metal pioneers bid adieu with a celebratory farewell tour in 2019 — shows that certainly felt like a victory lap for the legendary band.
The relatively short-lived retirement has apparently drawn skepticism from some fans, prompting the wife of singer-bassist Tom Araya, Sandra, to make a public statement on social media to inform the “trolls” that she, in fact, convinced Tom to get the back together and that the final decision ultimately came down to him.
“Let’s clarify for the trolls: Tom was done with playing,” wrote Sandra on Instagram [via Blabbermouth]. “I have harassed him for over a year. He agreed Finally. We shared that news with Slayer’s awesome managers and they did the rest! So yes without Tom it wouldn’t have happened.. without me Bugging...

Four years after Slayer wrapped up their farewell tour — and two weeks after guitarist Kerry King said a reunion was unlikely — the thrash metal legends will return this fall for a couple of headlining festival gigs.
The quartet — bassist/singer Tom Araya, guitarists Kerry King and Gary Holt, and drummer Paul Bostaph — have so far booked Chicago’s Riot Fest on Sept. 22 and Louisville’s Louder Than Life on Sept. 27, the band’s first gigs since their goodbye tour concluded in November 2019.

After five years, Slayer will return to the stage for headlining sets at Riot Fest and Louder Than Life in September 2024.
The announcement on Wednesday (February 21st) comes as a massive surprise, with the thrash legends set to play Riot Fest in Chicago on September 22nd and Louder Than Life in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 27th.
“Nothing compares to the 90 minutes when we’re on stage playing live, sharing that intense energy with our fans,” said frontman Tom Araya via a press release, “and to be honest, we have missed that.”
Added guitarist Kerry King: “Have I missed playing live? Absolutely. Slayer means a lot to our fans; they mean a lot to us. It will be five years since we have seen them.”

Kerry King just unveiled full details of his eponymous solo project, including the band lineup, the debut album, and the first single. At the same time, the guitarist also gave a brutally honest interview to Rolling Stone, declaring that fellow Slayer founder Dave Lombardo “is dead to me.”
When asked if he’s spoken with the drummer since Slayer fired him in 2013, King bluntly stated, “No. Lombardo is dead to me.” He went on to bring up the financial squabble that led to Lombardo’s sacking from the legendary thrash band.
“He went on that tirade when we were on a flight to Australia, and he knew we couldn’t retort for 14 hours, and he threw me under the bus,” said King. “I was the only one keeping him in the band. Tom [Araya] wanted him out before that, and [the late] Jeff [Hanneman] had just gotten the spider bite, so he wasn’t playing with us much.

Kerry King has announced his debut solo album, From Hell I Rise, arriving May 17th, along with the lead single “Idle Hands.” The guitarist has also unveiled the members of his post-Slayer band.
The official announcement comes years after King symbolically left his iconic chain onstage at the end of Slayer’s final concert in 2019 at The Forum in Los Angeles. At the time, King was quick to inform fans that he would be forming a new solo band to carry on the sound and ethos of Slayer — whose retirement King felt was “premature”.
“I knew early on that I wasn’t done,” remarked King in the press release for the album, “and I had no intention of not continuing to play.”

Kerry King moved on from Slayer, whose breakneck-paced declarations of destruction redefined metal for a generation, a long time ago. In 2018, as soon as frontman Tom Araya told him he was done with the band, King says he “shifted gears.”

Slayer’s Tom Araya said one of The Beatles’ songs is “so Slayer” — and the crazy thing is he’s right! Araya noted The Beatles released a version of the same song on The White Album that sounds very different. He also revealed how The Beatles and another British Invasion impacted him.
Slayer’s Tom Araya said ‘Revolution’ is his favorite Beatles song
During a 2009 interview with Cleveland.com, Araya was asked to name his favorite Beatles song and he picked “Revolution.” “The slower [album] version is good, too, but I prefer the heavier version,” he said. “It’s so Slayer! I’m a big Beatles fan. Every song on their albums counted.”
Araya was contrasting the upbeat single version of “Revolution” with the slower recording of the song from The White Album. The latter is called “Revolution 1.” While “Revolution” is one of The Beatles’ only hard-rock singles, “Revolution 1” is more...

Slayer’s classic 1983 debut album, Show No Mercy, is set to receive a 40th anniversary edition vinyl reissue via Metal Blade.
The reissue arrives February 9th in two configurations. The first is a “deluxe-edition” style set featuring a slipcase that houses the LP on “Gold Black Dust” colored vinyl, a turntable slipmat, poster, replica show flyers, and a signing card. It retails for $64.99.
Alternatively, hardcore Slayer fans might be tempted by the extremely limited “Blood Filled” liquid vinyl variant. Limited to 250 copies worldwide, the LP itself is a wonder to behold, as it appears to be actually filled with blood. It would appear the vinyl required a costly production process, as this edition — which does not include the aforementioned ephemera in the standard “deluxe” version — will set you back $199.99 (though the record is sure to become a collectible).
Both copies feature a fresh remastering job by Patrick W. Engel, who...

It probably won’t surprise anyone that Jason Momoa — a.k.a. Khal Drogo, a.k.a. Aquaman — is a devoted metalhead. So when he showed up at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday night for Slayer’s farewell concert, he didn’t pass up the chance to sing a Pantera classic with Phil Anselmo.
Anselmo was one of the opening acts for the thrash metal legends, performing alongside his post-Pantera solo band, The Illegals. During the set, Momoa, who was attending the show with his two kids, joined him onstage while he was performing Pantera’s famous ballad “This Love” from their biggest album, “Vulgar Display of Power.”

Slayer’s lengthy farewell tour and the thrash metal legends’ four-decade touring career came to an end Saturday with what was billed as the band’s final concert ever at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
Following the conclusion of “Angel of Death,” the last song of the final show, Slayer spent 10 more minutes onstage, with band mates hugging each other and taking one last photo of themselves together in front of a crowd. Bassist/singer Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King then remained onstage as the crowd continued to shower them with applause and chants.

Slayer are the heaviest band on the planet. Everyone knows this. Their brutal mix of shredding guitars, devastatingly fast blastbeats, snarled vocals, pitch black lyrical themes and ridiculously fast songs not only drove thrash metal into spaces that Metallica and Megadeth could only dream of, it also effectively laid the blueprint for extreme genres such as death metal, grindcore and black metal. There’s no question – without Slayer, metal would be far less pulverising.
The band has been throwing out its dirty, gnarly and aggressive sounds for almost 35 years now, and it has gone through some incredible hardships in that period. The most devastating of these, undoubtedly, was the death of founding Jeff Hanneman in 2013. Along with Tom Araya and Kerry King, he was one of the mainstays on the band, and there can be no doubt that his absence from their eagerly-anticipated 11th album Repentless will be felt keenly.

What with the release of their incredible new album, ‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here’, earlier this month, we thought we should get some essential Alice tracks buzzing round your head.
The Seattle-based band were lumped in with the Grunge explosion of the late-eighties, early-nineties, but were never really belonged to it. Always seen as more of a “dirgey”, doom-tinged band with a healthy Sabbath influence. In fact, Alice were always the majority of Metal-heads and Metal bands, band of choice from the North-West city. Metal fans themselves, the band were comfortable with their Hard Rock/Metal tag. Invited along on the 1990 Clash Of The Titans, predominantly, Thrash Metal tour featuring Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, as the only non-Thrash band, opening every stop on the world tour. Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich cites second album, ‘Dirt’, as one of his favorite albums ever released and three of the ‘tallica boys were present...

Ahh…Thrash. The much revered sub – genre of Heavy Metal, that has caused many an internet/bar room/kitchen table debate on whom, and what credentials, makes a band, or a particular album one worthy enough to be called ‘Thrash’! Fans of Thrash have a reputation that precedes them. Known for being elitist, close minded and stubborn they are however, some of the most enduring and devoted fans, any style of music has ever seen.

On the 3rd May 2013 the metal world was devastated to learn of the death of Slayer guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman. Although his battle with the disease necrotising fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease that he is believed to have contracted from a spider bite, was well publicised, his return to full health was expected by Slayer’s legions of fans. His death, sadly attributed to liver failure, came as a sudden shock and Slayer fans and fans of extreme music in general are left to mourn the loss of a true trailblazer and a powerful and innovative force in Thrash Metal.

Slayer guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman died earlier today in Southern California. He was 49.
Hanneman formed Slayer with Kerry King and Dave Lombardo in 1981, and they quickly recruited Tom Araya to round out the band. Slayer was considered one of the "Big Four" thrash metal acts to come out of the 1980s (along with Anthrax, Megadeth, and Metallica). Like all good heavy metal bands, Slayer was controversial, at times being accused of being pro-Nazi, white supremacists, Satanists, anti-religious, and encouraging violence through their lyrics. Hanneman in particular brought war and military themes to the lyrics he wrote. Slayer has released 10 studio albums since 1983, and won Grammys in 2007 and 2008 for Best Metal Performance. They have been nominated an additional three times.
Hanneman was born in Oakland, California in 1964. In 2011 he contracted necrotizing fasciitis - sometimes called the flesh-eating disease - which rapidly eats away at the skin and tissue. Hanneman retired from full-time touring,...

Drummer and founding member of the band Slayer, Dave Lombardo, has been removed from the band's Australian tour, according to a statement he released on Facebook. Lombardo is one of four who founded the thrash metal band in 1981.
Lombardo was let go from the band after questioning where tour income was going. "I spent the Christmas and New Year holidays realizing I had toured all over the world in 2012," he writes "but yet, had not been paid (except a small advance) or provided a proper accounting for a full year's sweat and blood." He goes on to mention that he was told he wouldn't be paid until he signed a contract that didn't stipulate how much would money be deducted for management commissions.
"Last year," he says, "I discovered 90% of Slayer's tour income was being deducted as expenses including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of...

It’s been awhile since we reported on writer/director Jesse Dayton’s zombie feature Zombex, but that all changes today with a first look at the new one-sheet for the flick as well as word from star Lew Temple on the production.
“I star in it along with Malcolm McDowell and Sid Haig,” said Temple, who currently can be seen on Season Three of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” as "Axel" (look for an extensive interview with the actor coming soon), of Zombex.
“It’s about a conspiracy in which the government is using New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina as a test zone for post-traumatic stress medicines,” continued the actor, whose previous genre turns include Trailer Park of Terror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween, among others.

In compiling a list of the 10 heaviest heavy metal albums, I have decided to reject those that are simply loud or controversial in their subject matter. I will use musical and lyrical aggression to detail what exemplifies true heaviness in the realm of Heavy Metal.
Since the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple introduced us to amplified distortion and roaring vocals, many bands have supplemented all the traditional elements with developed elements of Heaviness.
Now I was never a Metal Head when I was a teenager. I properly introduced myself to Heavy Metal when I was about 20. So I was never a part of the scene, I never had long hair or wore spikes on my wrists. And unlike one of my friends, I never had 666 tattooed on the inside of my lip. I see Heavy Metal music as a distinct and impressive sub section of music...

Musician, actor, writer, director...there is surely no end to this guy's talents? Jesse Dayton is currently hard at work in post-production on his new horror project 'Zombex'. The movie heralds the debut feature from the Texan in which he both wrote and directed. The boys over at Dread Central were able to catch up with him recently to get some juicy gossip from the production of what sounds like a cool zombie ride. In addition to the interview they were also good enough to reveal some great new looking production stills, which you can check out below. Lew Temple, David Christopher, Malcolm McDowell ('Halloween'), Sid Haig ('The Devil's Rejects'), Corey Feldman ('The Lost Boys'), John Doe, Tom Araya and Kinky Friedman all star....

Musician Jesse Dayton may be best known to genre fans as “Captain Clegg,” the front man to the psychobilly band seen in Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, as he not only performed under the moniker in the film but also was the opening act on Zombie’s music tour that kicked off later that year as well.
Now Dayton is gearing up to show his fans out there another side of himself as the writer/director just wrapped production on his first feature film entitled Zombex, a zombie flick that explores the concept that maybe pharmaceutical companies could actually be dastardly enough to be responsible for creating a zombie apocalypse through the distribution of their medicinal products.
Starring Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Sid Haig (House of 1000 Corpses), David Christopher (The Sinner), Slayer lead singer Tom Araya, Emily Kaye...

Today, June 6, 2011, another birthday is shared by two greats of hard rock and metal. Guitarist Steve Vai is 51 and Slayer front man and bass player Tom Araya celebrates his 50th birthday!
Slayer, led by the fearsome and frighteningly talented Tom Araya, has been at the forefront of thrash metal for nearly 30 years. Its aggression, power, and speed is filtered through Araya, whose domineering presence drives the mighty Slayer sound and performance.
25 years ago Slayer dropped an almighty metal bomb. Reign In Blood for me is the greatest and purest thrash metal album. Born in Viña del Mar, Chile on June 6, 1961, Araya’s contribution to music has not gone unnoticed and he recently receive the key to the city of his birth [...]...

Indio, California — One week after indie hipsters and pop enthusiasts stood on the same desert ground for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, an estimated 55,000 metal fans watched "The Big 4" of thrash share a U.S. stage together for the first time.
"This is history tonight and you're part of it," Metallica frontman James Hetfield told the crowd Saturday at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California. "Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica as one — with you!"
As members of all four bands gathered together toward the end of Metallica's set to perform the Diamond Head classic "Am I Evil?," fans roared. The group of friends, sometime rivals and ex-bandmates embraced one another affectionately and shared wide smiles.

A Conversation With Slayer's Tom Araya and Kerry King Mike Ragogna: You're on what you're calling The American Carnage Tour? Tom Araya: That's correct. Mr: Where does it cover? Ta: Actually, it started on the east side of Canada, which was actually the Canadian Carnage Tour. Then Europe, then the U.S. Mr: How's The American Carnage tour going? Kerry King: Cool, man. We're having a blast. Mr: What acts are touring with you? Kk: It's us, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Mr: Who came up with the idea for The American Carnage tour? Kk: I think it was management and booking agents. Of course, they have to run it by us, but other than that, I don't pay attention until it comes time for, "Hey, are you into this or are you not into this?" Mr: What's the tour like, are you guys having some fun...

Slayer frontman Tom Araya is still feeling the effects of his recent surgery. He has a constant lump in his throat.
The bassist went under the knife earlier this year after he was diagnosed with a cervical radiculopathy, a dysfunction of a nerve root of the spine. The operation has cured the agonizing pains he suffered as a result of the condition - but it's left him with a feeling of obstruction in his neck, and he has to be careful not to lose his composure and start headbanging onstage.
He tells Metal Hammer magazine, "I went in and came out and I felt fine. The surgery was actually in my neck, although it's part of my back. They went through the front of the neck, moved the esophagus and all that stuff out of the way, attached a plate onto the front of the neck bones and then put everything back.

Fangoria Musick just got the word that the long-churning rumors are true: Slayer and Megadeth are once again joining forces for an American Tour - their first together since 1991's Clash Of The Titans tour!
Slayer. Megadeth. Two names synonymous with fierce, crunching power. Two bands whose histories are inevitably intertwined in defining the thrash/metal genre. Individually, their respective prowess and accomplishments are impressive; but together, they're brutal and unstoppable. Megadeth and Slayer will join forces to co-headline "American Carnage," the most blistering, the most explosive, and the most eagerly-antcipated mega-tour of the winter - and you do not want to miss it.
"American Carnage" will kick off on January 18 in Seattle, Wa for a 26-date trek across North America that will include the six Canadian dates postponed earlier this month. Tickets for most shows go on sale this Friday, November 20. Ticketmaster is offering a special presage for most shows from Wednesday,...

I was a little bit surprised last week when a "biohazard" bag arrived at my doorstep. The clear plastic, medical-grade bag bore the unmistakable red/orange Biohazard logo/warning, but beneath that was another familiar logo. Slayer.
Contained in the ziplock bag was a photo, bio, and a copy of the band's long-awaited new album, World Painted Blood.
After numerous failed attempts to give the album a few good spins this weekend, I finally dug out my now-ancient Sony Walkman CD player, hooked up some earbuds and retreated into darkness to give the album a thorough and proper listen for a track-by-track breakdown.

For nearly three decades, bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, and drummer Dave Lombardo have proven over and over, whether in the studio or on the concert stage, that there is Slayer and then there's everyone else. And they're about to do it again, first with the band's co-headline spot on this summer's Mayhem Festival, and then with the late summer release of their ninth studio album, World Painted Blood (American Recordings/Columbia Records).
Some dozen new songs comprise World Painted Blood which was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. Slayer is a band that first captured the hearts of many Fangoria readers almost two decades ago. On April 18th, the band will make available "Psychopathy Red", a blood red, 7-inch vinyl collectors item that will be packaged in a special Russian crime scene "evidence envelope," as the song was inspired by the heinous Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, aka the Rostov Ripper, who confessed to brutally murdering 56 children. The song was recorded by the band - guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, and drummer Dave Lombardo - in a Los Angeles recording studio last October.
The first new track from Slayer since 2006's thrashterpiece Christ Illusion, will be available beginning Saturday, April 18, 2009 as part of the third annual Record Store Day. Only 5,000 of these limited edition discs will be manufactured worldwide, and will be available exclusively at participating independent record stores -log onto www.recordstoreday.
