Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?
Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.
After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.
However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

Things got pretty bananas on Sunday’s (July 16) episode of Celebrity Family Feud, literally, as drag queen Willam Belli pulled a banana out of her hair and left Steve Harvey speechless. And it left some viewers wondering if the show had finally gone too far. The stars of the reality competition series Drag Me To Dinner, including Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka, faced off on the long-running game show, which featured several moments that left its host and viewers amused and shocked. When Willam was called up to the podium to square off against Burtka, she reached into her hair and removed a banana. She then proceeded to take a bite out of the fruit before passing it to Burtka, who did the same. Willam then offered the banana to a stunned Harvey, who turned down the offer to get involved. “Steve Harvey’s face when the...

"We're good at what we do... because we use alternative methods of recovery." Vertical Ent has released an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Collection, the latest feature made by indie writer / director Marianna Palka. Recently known for her role on the Emmy winning & SAG nominated Netflix series Glow, she previously directed Egg (2018), starring Christina Hendricks and Anna Camp, which first premiered at Tribeca to rave reviews. This is her seventh film since her premiere film, Good Dick. Collection tells of a grieving father who grapples with the seedy, manipulative world of high stakes debt collection while also struggling to shed the tragedies of his past. He'll find himself pitted against his best friend, his prodigy and his love. Collection stars Alex Pettyfer, Mike Vogel, Breeda Wool, Willam Belli, Shakira Barrera, Joseph Julian Soria, and Paige Howard. This looks as dull and forgettable as the title, not much to see.

Lea Michele is being accused by former co-stars of mistreatment toward people of color on the set of “Glee.”
After the “Glee” star posted a message in support of George Floyd on Twitter, her former castmate, Samantha Marie Ware, responded with disbelief that Michele could support the Black Lives Matter movement when, to her memory, Michele had made her time on set of the musical series “a living hell.”
Ware played student singer Jane Hayward on the show’s sixth season, during which time she says Michele treated her so poorly that she had to “question a career in Hollywood.” One of those instances, Ware says, involved telling other castmates that if she got the chance, Michele would “s–t in my wig.”

Exclusive: The fourth and final season of Kit Williamson’s Emmy-nominated Lgbtq series Eastsiders will be available on Netflix on December 1.
Thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $140,000 from fans, Eastsiders, a co-production with Wolfe Video, will be back with a fourth season that picks up with the Silver Lake gang one year later. Executive produced by Williamson and his husband John Halbach, who also star, the six-episode Season 4 tackles heavy, adult-world questions like how do two human beings make love last? What does commitment really look like in a long-term relationship? And what unique challenges does a “gay marriage” present?
Cal (Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis) are back home from Season 3’s cross-country road trip, still a couple but wondering if they are really just best friends with benefits. Douglas (Willam Belli) and Quincy (Stephen Guarino) are engaged to be married, but with very different ideas about what a gay wedding should be.

Malcolm Barrett, Patrice Covington (“The Color Purple”), Kimberly Hébert Gregory (“Vice Principals”), Rebecca Naomi Jones (“The Big Sick”), Sanai Victoria (“Black-ish”) have been cast alongside Cynthia Erivo in National Geographic’s “Genius: Aretha.” Also, Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA TV award-winner Anthony Hemingway joined the anthology series as executive producer and pilot director.

From Ucp and Universal Television, the multi-camera/hybrid continuation of the ’80s sitcom follows Punky (Soleil Moon Frye), now a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets Izzy (Copeland), a young girl who reminds her a lot of her younger self.

The first act of “A Star Is Born” plays a bit like the gay film “Weekend,” Andrew Haigh’s intimate romance which follows two guys over the course of two days. When famed country rocker Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), fresh out of whiskey, rolls into the nearest bar for a drink, he becomes immediately enamored with Ally (Lady Gaga), whose killer pipes earned her a coveted spot on the drag show line-up. Overseen by a charismatic emcee, played by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” favorite D.J. “Shangela” Pierce, as well as a ditzy blonde queen named Emerald (Willam Belli). It’s a glittering and gay way to open a movie, and one would expect nothing less from a Lady Gaga-headlining version of this Hollywood classic.
Much has been made of Cooper’s method directing, (he reportedly wiped Lady Gaga’s make-up off during her audition), and his commitment to naturalism...

For all the reasons that a fourth iteration of “A Star Is Born” — fifth, if you count the 1932 drama “What Price Hollywood?” whose DNA is in every “Star” — shouldn’t and wouldn’t work in 2018, it’s an extraordinary surprise that this new version packs such a wallop.
This is “A Star Is Born” for people who never saw a previous version, for people who love any of the previous versions, and even for those who think the property is moth-eaten and old-fashioned. This is “A Star Is Born” that takes the characters seriously, in their passions and pathologies, their addictions and ambitions. And in an age where “Mamma Mia” and “The Greatest Showman” pass as hit musicals, it’s an exciting reminder of what the genre can be.
You know this story, but you don’t this story, at least not the way that screenwriters Eric Roth, Will Fetters...

The competition series RuPaul's Drag Race, which pits top drag queens against one another across a series of fabulous, colorful challenges, is having a moment. It drew record ratings for its season nine finale and hauled in its first-ever crop of Emmy nominations a few weeks later.
Meanwhile, on platforms like YouTube, some of the queens who have appeared on Drag Race are finding big audiences for their vlogs, music videos, and other pieces of glammed-up content. Now, three of those performers, spurned on by their digital successes, are hitting the road. Willam, Alaska Thunderfuck, and Courtney Act, each of whom count hundreds of thousands of subscribers on their respective YouTube channels, are the stars of The Aaa Girls, an upcoming tour presented by Fullscreen Live.

In this week's Indie Spotlight column, we're talking about a series that observes a young man's personal transformation -- and plays it for laughs. The show is called Ding Dongs, and it stars its creator, Joseph Baken, as a Mormon who grapples with his gay identity during a missionary trip to Los Angeles.
The arc of Ding Dongs -- at least in its first episode, which is now available on Baken's YouTube channel -- centers around its young protagonist, Elder Clark. While he is committed to God and his faith, his trip to the big city also ignites a personal journey within him. At the same time, Elder Clark plays straight man (no pun intended) to a slew of offbeat supporting characters. Ding Dongs' excellent casts includes well-traveled actor Drew Droege and drag queen Willam Belli.
As Baken explained in an article he penned for Advocate, Ding Dongs draws from...

On February 15, 2014, Richard Simmons was scheduled to teach an aerobics class at his gym, Slimmons, in Beverly Hills, California, but he never showed up.
It's now been over three years since the 68-year-old fitness guru has been seen, and while Et spoke to him last March over the phone, he's rarely been heard from since retreating from the public eye.
Earlier this year, former Daily Show producer Dan Taberski, who considers himself a friend of Simmons, started the weekly podcast Missing Richard Simmons to investigate the whereabouts of the Sweatin' to the Oldies star. Each week, Taberski interviews an array of people who knew Simmons -- from a Hollywood homes tour guide to Simmons' purported "second mother" to his own brother -- in hopes of speaking with the once-outgoing celebrity and thus getting a better understanding as to why he stepped out of the spotlight in the first place.

On July 1, my independently produced Lgbt series “EastSiders” made its debut on Netflix. This is the first time in the series’ four-year history that it has been made available internationally, with subtitles in more than a dozen languages. It’s been a long road from YouTube to Netflix, and looking back there were several key decisions we made that helped our show compete in an increasingly crowded space.
I wish I could say that I predicted this, that it was all part of some master plan, but the truth is I had no idea a series could have as many lives as “EastSiders” has had. My goals when I created the show were simple; I wanted to write, direct and star in a project and see it through to completion, because I had been involved in so many micro budget projects that never saw the light of day. Manuel is working his way through all the Lgbt-themed HBO productions.
Last week (and perhaps you missed it seeing as it was on Thanksgiving Eve), we talked about Diane Lane and RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Willam Belli in Cinema Verite which chronicled the behind-the-scenes drama of the first reality TV show, PBS’s An American Family. This week we look a decidedly new American family, the Henrickson clan of Big Love.
Shows like Big Love are precisely what draws me into the HBO brand. Here is a drama about a polygamous Mormon family man, Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) that tackled its subject matter with surprising candor and complexity. It at once aimed to present a deconstruction of the “traditional” American family while all the while rebuffing such an ideological construct in the first place. Bill lives with his three wives: Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn), Nicki (Chloë Sevigny) and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin...

What can you say about Miley Cyrus' closing number at the 2015 Video Music Awards? There was a ridiculous death drop (thank you Laganja Estranja). There was a kiss with reigning "RuPaul's Drag Race" champion Violet Chachki. Oh, and yes, Ms. Vivacious looked a week bit tired, but chances are unless you're a fan of the only hit show on the Logo TV network you likely had no idea who those drag queens dancing around Ms. Cyrus were. Let us enlighten you. It turns out Cyrus is such a big fan of "Drag Race" and drag in general that she sat through taping of the season 7 finale this past May. She smartly put some of the better dancers around her on the front part of the stage including the previously mentioned Estranja, Alyssa Edwards (whose audio can be heard in Cyrus' new song "Dooo It!") and Shangela (a trio who...

The tepid seventh season of "RuPaul's Drag Race" came to a close last night in decadent fashion. The three finalists, Ginger Minj, Pearl, and Violet Chachki sashayed for Ru's final blessing. Who won? Check below. We'll tell you why it's annoying. Though Ginger Minj was the favorite going into the finale thanks to her wild showmanship and electrifying impersonation of Adele, the crown went to Violet Chachki. Take a look at her season highlight reel. In seasons past, contestants won "RuPaul's Drag Race" for exhibiting a range of charismatic traits. Season six winner Bianca Del Rio was snide, ferocious, and whip-smart. Season five winner Jinkx Monsoon was kooky, kitschy, and slyly carnal. Violet Chachki, meanwhile, is certainly a glamorous and compelling stage-walker, but she's exhibited none of the comic verve that has made so many other notable contestants (Sharon Needles, Alaska, Adore Delano, Willam) such indelible characters. In fact, Violet...

If you have anything resembling a beating heart in your cold, stupid body, you will love "RuPaul's Drag Race." It's a bold, cool, petty, soulful, and sickeningly sickening competition for drag queens that gives us incredible runway shows, hysterical lip-sync battles, and the occasional vomiting fit. The new season premieres January 26, but Logo has just revealed the identities and Bmi percentages of its new cast. We rank the potential of the 14 new candidates below from worst to first. Happy 39th birthday to one of the funniest reality TV contestants of all time, "RuPaul's Drag Race" season six champ Bianca Del Rio. The queen has the no-nonsense attitude of Judge Judy, the stank side-eye of Marla Gibbs, and enough lightning-quick wit to zap the bourbon out of Dorothy Parker's hand. With the possible exception of Bianca's runner-up Adore Delano, it's safe to say Bianca is the funniest queen in the show's history. While season four standout Willam was extremely clever, he lacked a certain empathy with his fellow players. Season two Carol Channing idolator Pandora Boxx was a pure joy, but her kookiness was more quaint than exhilarating. And season five winner Jinkx Monsoon had the comic chops, but her talents were reserved mostly for character roles. Bianca is all of the above, and she manages to be both savage and sympathetic with everything she says. A true...

Last year we were happy to share the web series EastSiders right here on TheBacklot. The dark comedy starring Van Hansis (As the World Turns) and Kit Williamson (Mad Men) made its cable broadcast debut as a feature film on LogoTV, scored wins at both the Indie Series Awards and La Web Fest, received a Satellite Award, spawned a web comic and was eventually released on DVD and VOD by Wolfe Video.

The comic and TV host revealed that he is a huge fan of the Us show and the art of drag as a whole.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Ross said that the project was in its early stages.
"I've been working with Jodie [Harsh] on a UK version of RuPaul's Drag Race," he explained.
"Unfortunately we have had to take a break because of some family issues. But we're hoping to pick it up again in the near future.

Sissies Willam Belli, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Luke Stratte McClure & Emerson Collins
Religion and homosexuality have always had a tough relationship and leave it to Del Shores to address the issue head-on in the film version of his renowned play, Southern Baptist Sissies.
Like the play, which has been staged countless times since Shores wrote it in 2000, the film takes a look at four young boys – all Southern Baptists – and their journeys into adulthood and sexuality, with their parents, God and the Church watching closely over them to stop any missteps. While Sissies is filled with great laughs and musical performances, there’s a heavy dramatic message here, too, that unfortunately still applies in 2014.
TheBacklot checked in with Shores to talk about making the film (including Willam Belli’s joining the cast) as well as getting some scoop on his gone-but-not-forgotten series, Sordid Lives, which, we found out, may not be gone after all!

But loyal fans have known since day one that RuPaul was on to something special with this eleganza extravaganza, and now Logo's giving Johnny-come-lately's the chance to come correct and -- finally -- experience the first edition of Drag Race! The 9-episode season, which has not been re-aired or available on DVD due to legal issues, premieres tonight and includes never-before-seen footage, new cast interviews and "peek-a-Ru" pop-up commentary!
