This post contains spoilers for "Tár." This piece also discusses sexual assault, abuse, and suicide. Reader discretion is advised.
When Todd Field courted financiers to produce his screenplay about a world-famous fictional composer who fell from grace, he warned them directly on the page, stating that "this will not be a reasonable film." His 92-page screenplay somehow detailed a two-and-a-half-hour epic, with many long, lingering shots that feel deeply voyeuristic.
"Tár" is a complicated film dealing with painfully complex issues, introducing us to Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), an incredibly famous composer and conductor who heads up the Berlin Philharmonic. She is wildly talented, charismatic, and a little terrifying, with the kind of larger-than-life presence that you can practically feel through the screen. She's also an egomaniac who uses her power to manipulate and sexually abuse the young women seeking her mentorship, even blacklisting those who speak up against her in any way after the fact.

A pair of Oscar bellwether ceremonies took place this weekend, heralding uncertainty and unpredictability to an awards season where no one agrees on what contenders will end up taking home Academy Awards.
The DGA Awards, which has historically matched up best with the eventual winner of best director, chose the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. They’re the third directing team to win in the DGA’s 75-year history (after Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for “West Side Story” and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen for “No Country for Old Men”). Only eight DGA winners have failed to walk away with the Academy Award in the same season, with the last instance being Sam Mendes (“1917”), who won at DGA but lost to Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) at the 2020 Oscars.
But on Sunday, the BAFTA Awards swung the pendulum in the opposite direction,...

Cate Blanchett swallows Tár whole and spits out bullets in return. The role, of a fictional classical conductor somersaulting into her own downfall, was written by director Todd Field solely with her in mind. It’s a performance that functions as a total culmination, the crystallised form of all the women Blanchett’s played in the past – from Elizabeth I to Lilith in Nightmare Alley – who act like they have total control but may actually be hollow on the inside. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a single shot of those ice-blue eyes. A little tension in the muscles and they take on a self-satisfied feeling of mastery over their subject.
It’s not required that we sympathise with Blanchett’s Lydia Tàr. Her talent is plain – she’s a protégée of Leonard Bernstein and is one of the few winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award – but she’s also cruel,...

As a young Russian cellist in Todd Field’s “Tár,” British musician Sophie Kauer steals her scenes with the formidable Cate Blanchett, playing the equally formidable superstar conductor Lydia Tár. It’s hard to believe that this is her first acting gig, but the 21-year-old musician dove into the character of Olga, an emerging talent who catches the predatory eye of Lydia, and brings street smarts honed by, well, just being a young adult raised on social media, ambition, a knowledge of her own worth and passion for the music. Olga is part of Lydia’s downfall in the film. In real life, Kauer is still a student, currently studying in Sweden.
What drew you to this role? I saw the casting call in February 2021. This was the lowest point we had — everything was closed. Concerts had stopped. We really had almost no subjects at school. We were all just home alone.

Renowned musician Lydia Tár is days away from recording the symphony that will elevate her career. When all elements seem to conspire against her, Lydia’s adopted daughter Petra becomes an integral emotional support for her struggling mother.
Todd Field’s last film prior to Tár was back in 2006, probably causing many to think that he was done working behind the camera. But with Tár, he’s proved that he will only return to make films if it’s a story that’s genuinely gripping and one that will leave a lasting imprint on you long after the credits roll, which is exactly what this film did to me.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music–whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song–can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 25 films that best expressed this notion this year.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each musical example perfectly transported us to the world of the film. Check out our rundown of the top 25, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full.

There’s a lot of talk about how 2022 was a ‘flop’ year for film. The quality of the movies was constantly called into question without considering that many of these films were shot during the height of the pandemic where money, space, and resources were limited. Regardless of what anyone thinks, this year produced some phenomenal cinema, with even better performances. My best of 2022 list is meant to highlight some of the titles that left an impression on me. The choices range across genres from action, drama, documentary, and animation.

As one half of /Film's Scariest Scene Ever Boyz™ with Chris Evangelista, it's my pleasure to present the scariest movie moments of 2022. Yes, they're mostly horror films — but terrifying sequences can exist outside rigid horror boundaries. You might not be shocked to find "Smile" or "Barbarian" mentioned below, but what about the awards contender that starts things off? Or my favorite film of 2022 that no one's talking about coming in at the top spot? It's been a rock-solid year for being scared senseless. Let's go ahead and recount all the extra nightmares that cycled through my head.

Hildur Gudnadóttir, who in 2020 won the Oscar for best original score for her work on Joker, is back with two film scores this year that are firmly in the awards-season conversation. With work on Todd Field’s Tár and Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, she could make history as the first female composer to be nominated twice in the same season. The Icelandic musician talked to THR about her processes for both films and whether the industry is opening up more for female composers.
You scored two films this year. Which came first?
I started on Tár first, but I think I finished Women Talking before I finished Tár. So they were running a little bit at the same time, but in a nice way that didn’t totally overlap. I had chunks of time on each one.

One of the best films of the year is TÁR, director Todd Field's profoundly entrancing examination of the downfall of a famous orchestra conductor. The film is already playing in theaters and include a soundtrack by the Oscar-winning Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. In addition to her work heard in the film, she also wrote lots of music that isn't heard in the film. In fact, there's so much that Deutsche Grammophon is releasing an entire album of songs "From and Inspired By The Motion Picture." Not just another movie soundtrack. As a promotion, they've released a music video for a track called "Mortar" that is not heard in the film either. "An unsettling, minimalist piece performed by the composer with the London Contemporary Orchestra. Field himself shot the video, which features the film's star, Cate Blanchett, and other members of the cast including Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant and Sophie Kauer.

"If you're here, then you already know who she is." And if you're confused by our headline, then you most likely haven't seen the trailer for "TÁR," where Cate Blanchett's famous composer-conductor, Lydia Tár, talks all about dancing the masque, servicing the composer, sublimating one's ego, and all that good stuff. One thing Blanchett's not sublimating is her status as an Egot winner, perhaps a foreshadowing of the Academy Award nomination Blanchett herself is likely to receive for her performance.

Today Focus Features opens Tár, the strikingly original return of Todd Field, in four locations in NY and LA. The film premiered at Venice winning star Cate Blanchett Best Actress as musician and conductor Lydia Tár. Early this week, it seemed to mesmerize a sold-out Alice Tully Hall at the New York Film Festival.
A 97 with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline’s review here called Field’s first film since Little Children 16 years ago, a “daring and quite comprehensive immersion in a rarified world [that] features a lead performance the likes of which doesn’t come along very often.” Field wrote the part for Blanchett but at an NYFF Q&a he said he waited to send her the script until it was done and Focus chairman Peter Kujawski “asked me, ‘Who do you have in mind?’ I said I was still thinking about it. Because I was superstitious. That she would say no.

Plot: In the days leading up to the debut of her magnum opus, musician Lydia Tár’s carefully compartmentalized life begins to shatter amid rumors of inappropriate, predatory conduct.
Review: Tár marks director Todd Field‘s first movie in sixteen years, and for lack of a better term, it’s a banger. Like In the Bedroom and Little Children, it’s a deeply layered work, but it’s a shattering portrait of the privilege of prestige and talent. Cate Blanchett delivers perhaps a career-best performance in the lead.
Many will call this the “cancel culture” movie, and to some extent, it is. It’s a nuanced portrait of an artist watching their world crumble around them in real time. Tár is being hoisted on her own petard here, but many critics have taken to calling this film “anti” cancel-culture because Field evokes some empathy for his central figure. That said,...

Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is already in the history books after she won the best original score Oscar for “Joker” (2019). Now, she could break a new record with two bonafide awards contenders.
Todd Field’s “Tár,” a fictional psychological drama about one of the greatest living composers and conductors, has received critical acclaim after debuting at many of the fall film festivals. One of the highly praised elements was the incredible music featured in the film. However, in a movie about a composer, many casual cinema-goers were left wondering what was original or pre-purposed (unless you are an expert on musical compositions). Focus Features has confirmed to Variety exclusively that the film’s music by Guðnadóttir meets the requirement for Academy Awards and will be submitted for consideration.

Focus Features’ fascinating new trailer for TÁR feels like an “For Your Consideration” reel promoting two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. Blanchett’s sure to be busy this upcoming awards season; she’s already earned the Best Actress award at the 2022 Venice Film Festival for her performance as composer/conductor Lydia Tár.
Three-time Oscar nominee Todd Field wrote and directed the drama which currently sits at 97 fresh on Rotten Tomatoes following its festival run. RogerEbert.com’s Tomris Laffly calls it “a film of rare elegance and sophistication,” and Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt describes Blanchett’s work as feeling “less like a performance than a full-body possession.”
The cast also includes Noémie Merlant, Nina Hoss, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, and Mark Strong. Todd Field, Alexandra Milchan, and Scott Lambert served as producers.
TÁR opens in select theaters on October 7, 2022 followed by a nationwide release on October 28th.

The cast also includes Mark Strong, Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, Sylvia Flote. Meet Lydia Tár, the next role likely to get Cate Blanchett nominated for an Oscar. "Tár," the upcoming character epic from writer-director Todd Field, is a powerhouse showcase for the acclaimed performer, and now we have a full trailer for the film that shows off her skills.
In the trailer, we meet Tár, a classical composer and conductor with as many top-notch accomplishments as one could possibly ever want, including being one of 15 creatives who have achieved Egot status, according to a voiceover introduction in the clip. But not all is as it seems in her idyllic and musical life. The trailer suggests something more sinister is at play in the musician's world, something that threatens to bring her to her knees, but it does well to hide exactly what Tár will be facing throughout the film's runtime. Watch the trailer below!

Fresh off the “Tár” festival circuit, two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett seems poised to assume the role of Oscars front-runner in this year’s Best Actress race. Blanchett has garnered mountains of acclaim for her performance as the virtuosic composer Lydia Tár in Todd Field’s third feature film. Following the film’s world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, she has received universal praise for what Rebecca Ford, senior awards correspondent for Vanity Fair, calls “Blanchett’s career-best performance, which will likely land her an eighth Oscar nomination.”
It’s no wonder that critics are raving over Blanchett’s turn, with the performance being a typical awards magnet. Lydia Tár is described as an “iconic musician” who is an Egot winner, a brilliant conductor and composer, and a protégé of the legendary Leonard Bernstein. Lydia’s towering career begins showing signs of crumbling when she finds herself in...

With Todd Field’s first film in sixteen years finally arriving in just about a month, the release is thankfully getting a few more bells and whistles than your standard motion picture. Considering TÁR follows a conductor (as played by Cate Blanchett), a substantial album release is in store, not only featuring music from and inspired by the film––including works by Mahler, Elgar, Guðnadóttir and more––but also Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score and contributions from Cate Blanchett herself as she conducts a rehearsal of Mahler’s 5th symphony, as well as music from 20-year-old British-German cellist Sophie Kauer. The album, coming from Deutsche Grammophon, will arriving digitally and on CD on October 21, a few weeks after the film, with a vinyl edition on February 24, 2023. One can pre-order here.

Hot off of its Venice Film Festival premiere, a concept album for Cate Blanchett’s “Tár” is set to be released on Oct. 21. The film bowed to rave reviews and a six-minute standing ovation.
The Focus Features film, releasing Oct. 7, stars Blanchett as the fictional Lydia Tár, a globally renowned, gay and sometimes tyrannical conductor of a German orchestra, who finds herself in the crosshairs of a perilous #MeToo scandal.
The film is director Todd Field’s first movie in 16 years, following the critically acclaimed “Little Children” (2006) and his breakout “In the Bedroom” (2001).
Set in a contemporary classical-music world, Field called on “Joker” composer Hildur Guðnadóttir to work on the film’s music.
The concept album is inspired by the film and includes works by Mahler, Elgar, Guðnadóttir and more. Along with Guðnadóttir, the soundtrack will feature Blanchett conducting a rehearsal of Mahler’s fifth symphony and cello work by 20-year-old Sophie Kauer.

Even before anyone had seen Cate Blanchett’s starring turn in Todd Field’s Tár, there was awards buzz around her performance.
The role — which sees Blanchett playing the fictional Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composers/conductors and the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra — was tipped, sight unseen, to be the one to win the actress her third Oscar.
The audience at the early evening gala jumped to their feet to cheer on Blanchett, giving the actress, and Field, a six-minute standing ovation following the screening.
There was a raucous response from the Venice audience with waves of cheers, shouts of “bravo!” and “brava” for Field and Blanchett.

The 79th Venice Film Festival officially kicked off the fall Oscar race on Thursday afternoon with Todd Field’s “Tár,” a drama starring Cate Blanchett as a famous composer embroiled in a public scandal. The film was showered with an ecstatic six-minute standing ovation as the audience inside the Sala Grande Theatre kept chanting “Bravo!“
Clutching the hand of festival chief Alberto Barbera, Blanchett took a bow — but the clapping continued and even grew louder. When the applause finally ended, a misty-eyed Blanchett turned to someone on her team and said: “Let’s get a drink.”
Indeed, Blanchett’s work in “Tár” will likely be one of the most toasted performances of Oscar season. The enthusiastic reviews for the film all but guarantee Blanchett will land her eighth Oscar nomination for acting. At the end of the 1970s, while working as a bat boy for the Portland Mavericks, Todd Field had a bright idea: why not make a stringy-shaped gum (call it Big League Chew) so that kids could mimic the tobacco chewing players on the plate? In 1980 he and his partner sold it to Wrigley’s. He was 16 years old.
Field knows a lot about ideas. He probably knows a phrase like “inside baseball,” too. You’ll find evidence of both in TÁR, his first film in 16 years. “Tár” is going to get people talking, but its star Cate Blanchett has made clear that she’s “not interested in agitprop.”
The Oscar winner is in Venice for the world premiere of the Todd Field-directed movie, and was in good spirits as she addressed journalists at a Thursday press conference.
The Focus Features pic stars Blanchett as fictional Lydia Tár, a globally renowned, gay and sometimes tyrannical conductor of a German orchestra, who finds herself in the crosshairs of a perilous #MeToo scandal. The film is Field’s first movie in 16 years, following the acclaimed “Little Children” (2006) and his breakout “In the Bedroom” (2001).
Asked whether she considered “Tár” to be an important movie for LGBT representation, as her 2015 film “Carole” was, Blanchett said it “felt urgent and undeniable,” but noted: “I don’t think about the character’s gender nor her sexuality at all, at all. I love that about the film.

Asked whether she considered “Tár” to be an important movie for LGBT representation, as her 2015 film “Carole” was, Blanchett said it “felt urgent and undeniable,” but noted: “I don’t think about the character’s gender nor her sexuality at all, at all. I love that about the film.

Cate Blanchett becomes a frenzied conductor in the teaser trailer for Todd Field’s Tár, the director’s first film in 16 years, which is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Blanchett plays the fictional conductor Lydia Tár who, at the beginning of the trailer, stands against a black background and in slow motion exhales smoke from her mouth. That sets in motion a monologue about the meaning of time.
“You cannot start without me. I start the clock,” a voiceover says as Tár pores over a stack of classical music records and adopts a pensive, nail-biting pose.
Through a montage of live action, photos, drawings and other visual materials, the trailer and its narrative convey a woman veering out of control and, before possibly reaching a breaking point, finding exhilaration at the conductor’s concert podium.

Cate Blanchett is transforming on our screens once again - this time, into a world-renowned classical musician for Todd Field's upcoming drama "TÁR." After releasing an early peek in July, fans are getting more of a glimpse at the trippy film, which is set for an October premiere.
In "TÁR," the two-time Academy Award winner portrays musician Lydia Tár, who is "a conductor of a celebrated German orchestra," Blanchett said back in April during an appearance on "The Film Comment Podcast." She explained of the film at the time, "It's about a sort of fall from grace, a come-to-Jesus moment and about the creative process, and about power, so it's really interesting."
Field previously directed the Academy Award-nominated 2001 drama "In the Bedroom," and "TÁR" is his first feature since 2006. Blanchett called the director a "fantastic collaborator."

"Time is the essential piece of interpretation." Focus Features has revealed a second teaser trailer for TÁR, the latest feature from filmmaker Todd Field - director of the films In the Bedroom and Little Children. This his first in 16 years since last making Little Children in 2006. Set in the international world of classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár - as played by Cate Blanchett. She is widely considered one of the greatest living composer / conductors and was also the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. The character of Tár is fictional, but she seems to be inspired by Eva Brunelli - who was the first woman to conduct at the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1923. The cast includes Mark Strong, Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, Sylvia Flote. It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival next week, then playing at the New...

After getting a first look at CinemaCon, Focus Features has now debuted the first teaser trailer for the film, which shows Blanchett exhaling a plume of smoke from her mouth as a chilling monologue about the pandemic and the “other kinds of plagues” that threaten to destroy us and make us “mad with power.” It then shows Blanchett locked in as she conducts a sweeping and massive orchestra.

Although plot details remain slim, “Tár” is set to star Cate Blanchett as the fictional Lydia Tár, an acclaimed composer who rose to become the first female chief conductor of a German orchestra. The story will reportedly follow Tár during her daily life living in Berlin, leading up to the recording of her latest symphony. The supporting cast includes Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Mark Strong, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, Sophie Kauer and Sylvia Flote.
