If you strapped in for the 166-minute runtime of Andrew Dominik's "Blonde," a fictional interpretation of Marilyn Monroe based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, odds are you don't want to stop thinking about it. Netflix's ambitious swing of a project, their first to earn an Nc-17 rating, is meant to inspire passionate responses and generate vigorous debate. After all, a figure like Marilyn Monroe is big enough to warrant several interpretations.
"Blonde" is a relentlessly stylized look at the life and loss of Marilyn Monroe (Ana de Armas), immersing viewers in the world that consumed her. Although the film feels like a brutal assault on the senses at times, the provocative approach pulls out all the stops to provide a visceral examination of how fame buoyed and sunk Monroe. "Blonde" is meant to unsettle and enrage as it deputizes viewers to provide the care and protection...

From The Edge and The Untouchables, to the mighty Glengarry Glen Ross: a salute to the movie writing of David Mamet.
Spoilers ahead for The Untouchables, The Spanish Prisoner, and House Of Games
There's a moment in 1992’s Glengarry Glen Ross when Alec Baldwin, sent from head office on what he calls a “mission of mercy”, opens his motivational speech to an office of real estate salesmen by turning on Jack Lemmon’s Shelley 'The Machine' Levene.
“Put that coffee down,” he demands as Lemmon pours himself what he, probably reasonably, considers to be a well-earned cup of Joe.
“Coffee’s for closers only,” Baldwin points out, using the term for someone who can make a successful sale. The person who can close it.
“Your name’s Levene?” he asks a few moments later. “You call yourself a salesman, you son of a bitch?”

When Emily Santos was born last July, her parents marveled over her nearly full head of black hair and hazel eyes. As Sundance and Slamdance prepare to kick off this week some insiders have predicted there could be a surge of activity from digital platforms besides Netflix and Amazon Studios.
The latter two are expected to be active – and indeed have already taken a few Park City titles off the table – yet there is talk of other well-capitalised companies mulling over a splashy entry into the acquisitions arena. The Sundance Film Festival runs from January 21-31.
Nimble digital platforms challenge traditional buyers
Faced with sharp digital rivals unencumbered by the need to spend on costly P&A and plugged into transactional data that enables them to target audiences with forensic precision, theatrical buyers will need to be on their toes.
The distribution landscape is crowded and unforgiving, yet creative marketing campaigns can pave the way to success.

Taylor Swift continues to make every fan's dream come true. Out of 400 male dancers, 22-year-old Robert Green landed his dream job as a backup performer for the singer's 1989 World Tour. And like anyone with good news, an emotional Robert called his mother to share the big moment and received the sweetest reaction over the phone. His mom, Sylvia Watlington-Green, can be heard screaming in the call and telling her son that "this is just the beginning," while Robert, who can't contain his tears, laughs and cries. The dancer called his mother his biggest supporter and best friend in an interview with Today Parents and said, "Two years ago, my mom and I packed up in my 1996 Honda, and she drove me from East Coast to West Coast with just enough money to make it. Prior to this amazing moment . . . I wasn't working as a dancer as much as I had hoped.

Manchester United are understood to be weighing up a move for Qpr goalkeeper Julio Cesar, according to the The Sun.
Arsenal are also thought to be interested in the former Inter Milan shot-stopper, and both have goalkeeping issues at the moment. David de Gea is hotly tipped to be replaced at Old Trafford whilst Arsene Wenger is losing faith in Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny.
Cesar is the sort of pedigree of goalkeeper both are looking for, and has reams of experience. The 33-year old spent seven years at the San Siro and won five Serie A titles and the Champions League.
But he was forced out of the club last summer due to Inter’s cash problems and need to get him off the wage bill, and surprisingly ended up at the Premier League’s bottom club Queens Park Rangers.

It is common knowledge that to be a goalkeeper in professional football (or for that matter, any level of football) you need to hold one of the following three attributes; craziness, stupidity, or a sheer disregard for your physical and mental health. The pressures that come with the modern game are amplified when you look at a goalkeeper’s role – one mistake, and you may just have cost your team the biggest match in it’s history… or, made a complete fool of yourself.

Queens Park Rangers have announced the signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar, pending international clearance.
The Brazilian veteran, who has been capped 64 times by his country, has signed a four-year deal and will wear the No.33 shirt this season.
He has represented Brazil at two World Cups, been awarded Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year twice and arrives at Loftus Road to compete for a starting place with England goalkeeper Robert Green.
Qpr only signed Green this summer but now his first choice status looks almost certain to be revoked. His new competition Julio Cesar, 32, was named the third best goalkeeper in the world in 2009 and also picked up a Ballon d’Or nomination.
Rangers manager Mark Hughes was overjoyed as he spoke to the club’s website:
“It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to attract a keeper of such outstanding ability to the club,” he said.

The dawn of a new Premier League season is almost upon us and it’s shaping up to be one of the most entertaining in its over 20-year history. For Qpr, the new season begins at home with a new look Swansea City as their opponents.
The R’s were in the centre of the dramatic climax to the 2011/12 season after Sergio Aguero’s late strike past former goalkeeper Paddy Kenny sealed Manchester City’s first Premier League title but results elsewhere also meant the defeat was enough for Qpr to survive the drop.
Whilst there was less drama on the final day of the season for Swansea, the club have had some major restructuring to do. After the departure of Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool – the team they defeated 1-0 in Rodgers’ final game at the club – chairman Huw Jenkins recruited footballing legend Michael Laudrup as heir to the Liberty throne.

According to Goal.com, Queens Park Rangers are preparing to sign veteran Tottenham Hotspur defender William Gallas on a free transfer.
Qpr boss Mark Hughes has already acquired 34-year-old Ryan Nelson on a free transfer from Spurs and the club are now trying to complete the deal of his former teammate Gallas, also 34.
New Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas will allow Gallas, who is on a £60,000-a-week contract, to leave White Hart Lane on a free after Tottenham completed the deal of Belgian giant Jan Vertonghen and also have Sebastian Bassong and Steven Caulker returning from their loan spells away. Speculation is Caulker will receive more game time next season and he has jumped ahead of the high-earning Gallas and the new Tottenham boss would prefer not to have such an expensive salary drainer on the bench.

Sky Sources are reporting that Junior Hoilett has agreed a deal to join Mark Hughes’ Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer.
The 22-year-old joins the London club after rejecting a contract extension offer at former club Blackburn Rovers, who last season were relegated to the Championship.
Earlier this week Blackburn had suggested that they had offered Hoilett a ‘fantastic deal’, although he turned down the chance to continuing playing for the club and began searching for a return to the Premier League.
The Canadian international winger/forward had caught the eye of a number clubs, namely North East rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland but his high wage demands were ultimately off putting.
The deal bringing Hoilett to Loftus Road is expected to be confirmed on Friday and he joins Andrew Johnson, Fabio, Robert Green and Park Ji-sung as new recruits.
More on this story as it develops.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Mark Hughes is set to launch a bid to bring Welsh striker Craig Bellamy to Queens Park Rangers, reuniting the two men who have previously worked together at Man City and with the Welsh national side.
Bellamy had been expected to move to hometown club Cardiff City where he spent a loan spell a couple of seasons ago before joining up with Liverpool, but the chance to remain in the Premier League, and to join up with good friend Hughes has reportedly put that move in doubt.

“Really happy to have just signed for West Bromwich Albion, thx to the fans for making me feel so welcome last year, can’t wait to get started”

Okay, so England might have been eliminated in the quarter finals, on penalties (again) but cheer up, because we have a terrific young team ready to take Brazil by storm at the 2014 World Cup.
It sounds a long way off but the first qualifier for the tournament is on Friday September 7 in Moldova with Ukraine coming to Wembley just four days later.
With the likes of Steven Gerrard (32), Scott Parker (31), Gareth Barry (31) John Terry (31) and Frank Lampard (34) surely retiring from International football over the next two years, here’s a look at what our 23 man World Cup Squad could look like, and some of the players we should test out in the qualifiers.

Every weekday before Euro 2012 begins on June 8, we’ll preview a national team in the field, beginning with Group A and finishing with Group D. Today we continue Group D with England, a nation which continues its precipitous decline.
Nothing makes me happier than the fact that English fans finally have accepted the fact that the national team essentially have no chance to win a major international tournament. Even with a full squad they would struggle against European competition, but the prospects of making it out of the group stage become even more unlikely without the likes of Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Cahill and Gareth Barry.
Group A Previews: Poland | Russia | Czech Republic | Greece
England’s strengths this year are, ironically, areas of historical weakness: goalkeeper and manager. I know, I know, no one really likes Roy Hodgson, but he’s certainly the best choice for the job given...

Sam Allardyce has guided West Ham United back into the Premier League after a 2-1 Championship play-off final victory in front of 78,523 fans at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.
Hammers striker Ricardo Vaz Te scored the lucrative winner in the 87th minute, finding the back of the net from close range high into the middle of Matt Gilks’ goal.
West Ham had probably deserved the victory after edging the game over the 90 minutes. They scored the opening goal in the 35th minute from a Carlton Cole strike in the six yard box. It was 1-0 at half time but Ian Holloway’s men had a perfect start to the second half when Tom Ince equalised when he cooly finished in the bottom left hand corner of Robert Green’s goal.

Roy Hodgson has named his England team for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
Here’s the full squad…
Goalkeepers:
Joe Hart (Manchester City) – Taking Joe Hart is no shock at all after his impressive displays in recent years not only for England but also on a consistent basis for Manchester City. Hart is Manchester City’s number one goalkeeper and his team, thanks to him, conceded the least amount of goals in the 2011/12 Premier League season. His England career began in 2005 when he was part of the U19′s team. Two years later he was moved into the U21′s where he played 21 games. He made his official senior team debut against Trinidad and Tobago, on 1 June 2008, ever since then he has played 17 games conceding 11 goals.
Robert Green (West Ham) – Having played 42 games this season in the Championship he is definitely a major part of the West Ham team. His...

Roy Hodgson’s first major announcement as England Boss is less than 24 hours away when he names his squad for the Euro 2012 Championships at 1pm tomorrow.
When naming a tournament squad you are never going to please everyone – fans, critics and professionals alike – everyone has a favourite player, a hated player, a system they prefer. Below I attempt to second guess our new England Manager with the players I believe he is going to pick.
Goalkeepers
I personally never see the point in taking three goalkeepers. You’d have to have the worst luck ever in a tournament to lose two of them to injury or suspension. I always feel the 3rd goalkeeping spot could be used for an extra attacking midfielder or striker but I can’t imagine such a calculated risk to happen in this squad as Hodgson will go with the three goalkeeper formula.

West Ham kept up their terrific away form with an outstanding victory at Oakwell as they took apart Barnsley by securing a 4-0 win.
This was a match in which Sam Alladyce’s side had to win. And they did, in style.
Skipper Kevin Nolan opened the scoring inside the first seven minutes after pouncing on a Matt Taylor corner for his 11th of the campaign.
Barnsley’s out-of-form hitman Craig Davies had a long range shot parried by Robert Green moments later and that was the closest that the Tykes came in the whole 90 minutes.
Nicky Maynard doubled the Hammers’ lead in the 23rd minute with a long range strike that beat Barnsley stopper David Button.
It was game over at this point, and the Londoners added insult to injury 10 minutes before the break with Mark Noble taking advantage of a Button error.

Interim England manager Stuart Pearce has announced his England squad for the friendly against Holland next week at Wembley Stadium.
The big surprise is in the inclusion of Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell, who has only just come back from injury for the Wearsiders and has two goals to his name since his return to the side last month. Though one of those goals was an absolute wonder strike against Norwich.
Campbell seems to have been preferred over Liverpool’s mega signing Andy Carroll who has struggled for goals this season, and the Black Cats forward has earnt his first ever call-up.
Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard is back in the England squad for the first time since November 2010′s friendly against France, Micah Richards returns to the squad, along with Tom Cleverley who is selected again having just recovered from injury and is looking for his first Senior England cap.

England secured qualification for Euro 2012 but it was overshadowed by a late Montenegro equaliser and a Wayne Rooney red card. England dominated the first half, going ahead through goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent, before Elsad Zverotic pulled one back. Wayne Rooney was sent off for a violent kick in the second half though and Andrija Delibasic levelled the score with a dramatic late header.
An allocation of 1,200 fans travelled to the Podgorica City Stadium to watch England take on the newest international team. Montenegro – formerly merged with Serbia, have only been on the international scene since 2006, and have achieved a meteoric rise through FIFA’s rankings system – climbing from 208th to 26th in the past five years.
It certainly wasn’t going to be an easy game for Fabio Capello’s side. Although Montenegro has a population smaller than Leeds, they have a new manager in the form...

12 January: Haiti's capital is devastated by an earthquake.
By Simon Cording, rescue worker
Day to day I'm a fireman, but I'm also part of the International Search and Rescue Team. We are deployed whenever disasters take place around the world. I was at work in Manchester when I got a text message telling me to get myself ready because we were going to Haiti later that day. We always have our bags ready, so it was just a matter of grabbing my passport. It was snowing in the UK and Heathrow was closed, but we got special dispensation to fly out around midnight and the airport was opened just for us.
We were met by scenes of mass devastation at Port au Prince airport.

Robert Green’s gaffe. Photo by Martin Rose/Getty Images. The moment you become a true soccer fan is the moment you first blame the ref for your team's loss. The 2010 World Cup may have been riddled with disallowed goals, award-winning dives, and petulant tantrums. But, for better or for worse, there has always been an ugly side to the beautiful game. And cry as you might for the introduction of video review, the errors and the fouls and the outrageous calls are what many fans remember most. Years from now, what will people point to as the most reprehensible act of the 2010 World Cup? We list the candidates below. • France There is nothing inherently reprehensible about not getting out of the group stage in the World Cup, even for a recent champion. What is shameful is the way les Bleus made a mockery of the beautiful game by letting...

They certainly don't have the CGI smoothness of George Lucas' Lego Star Wars series, but Fabian Moritz's stop-motion, Lego World Cup highlights may just be the most popular brickfilms in the galaxy. The 19-year-old German football fan began making Lego films three years ago, re-envisioning matches of his hometown Hanover club as played by little construction toys. At the commencement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Moritz decided he'd take the most thrilling match of each day's play and make a Lego video of all the must-see moments. "Each goal takes between two and three hours to do," Moritz told the Afp, and requires roughly 80 pictures to make the stop-motion animation come to life. Hence, unlike many American soccer fans, Moritz loves the low-scoring games. The popularity of Moritz's videos have lead to two production deals; one with the UK newspaper The Guardian to make videos of all the England games,...

Chace Crawford has scored a goal on the dating scene - the Gossip Girl hunk is reportedly dating the ex-girlfriend of an English soccer player.
The 24-year-old hunk was spotted enjoying a night out with Canadian lingerie model Elizabeth Minett at a fashion event in Milan, Italy earlier this week (begs22Jun10).
The pair enjoyed a dinner date before heading to a party with pals, according to Britain's Daily Mail.
England goalkeeper Robert Green is said to have called off his relationship with Minett, 23, to focus on competing in the World Cup tournament in South Africa this summer.

This week G.W. has decided to take a quick, succinct tour of the international sporting world. We begin with the greatest of all sporting events, the World Cup. Months before the tournament even began, G.W.’s first choice to win it all this year was Argentina. After a week of competition, G.W. is even more convinced they’ll be the team hoisting the trophy come July 11. Maradona's boys have been playing the most exciting football of the Cup. Although Lionel Messi has yet to find the back of the net, it is clear that his mental frailties—when it comes to rising to the occasion for his national team—are dissipating. He is finally on a roll. The same can't be said for England's disastrous showing. All G.W. has to say at this point: England and the color green should never be seen together. Think of it,...

In a rare, fun bit of Gossip Girl and World Cup news, Chace Crawford apparently spent the night out in London - with the ex-girlfriend of one of England's most hated villains!
That would be former starting goaltender Robert Green, who infamously botched a routine save in England's opening game against the U.S., allowing America to earn a 1-1 tie.
Well, it was reported by many sources that Green fumbled that very shot during the World Cup because he was all out of sorts from his recent breakup with Elizabeth Minett.
Now, here she is with one of our own (below). Way to go, Chace! Just don't let it distract you from your performances on Gossip Girl this season ... we need you at your best!

Even the B-flat drone of the vuvuzelas hasn't tempered America's enthusiasm for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and as the tournament heads into the third round of the group stage, ratings are at a 16-year high.
Through the first 14 matches of the World Cup, Espn and ABC have delivered an average crowd of 3.35 million viewers, marking a 64% increase from the same period in 2006, when the nets drew 2.9 million fans. The initial portion of the round-robin stage was distinguished by the much-anticipated June 12 U.S.-England tie, which drew 13 million viewers on ABC, making it the most-watched first round World Cup game in U.S. broadcast history.
Spanish-language broadcaster Univision also drew a big crowd last Saturday, serving up 4.11 million viewers with its coverage of the 1-1 Yanks-Brits match. The Group C battle stands as Univision's second most-watched U.S. World Cup match ever, trailing only the U.S.-Mexico round-of-16 showdown...

The Jabulani World Cup ball. Courtesy of Adidas. It was the goal heard around the world on Saturday when England’s net-minder Robert Green let a tame shot by U.S.A.’s Clint Dempsey slip through his hands, sending the game to a 1-1 draw. A day later, Algeria’s keeper Fawzi Chaouchi mishandled a long-range strike from Slovenia’s Robert Koren, costing Algeria the 0-1 match. But the goalies aren’t really being faulted with the football faux pas—fingers are pointing at Adidas’s new Jabulani World Cup ball. “The ball just moves all over the place,” Dempsey said later in interviews. U.S. goalie Tim Howard shared a similar opinion. “This ball is really doing silly things,” he said. “I feel bad for the guy [Green].” Players seem to widely agree that the ball is no good, especially in the air. “It’s terrible, horrible,” Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar said.

Prepare for a re-run of anti-Hun tabloid "fun" should England find themselves playing Germany in the World Cup.
Bild, the German equivalent of The Sun, has beaten its English counterpart to the ball by heaping scorn on the luckless goalkeeper Robert Green.
The paper published five tips for England to solve its "eternal goalie problem." They include putting Prince Charles in goal with gloves attached to his "giant ears" that would stop any ball, giving UK citizenship to former German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, replacing Green with Harry Potter, and painting the image of a female breast on the football, pointing out that "English men never miss their grasp at that sight."
Hardly laugh-out-loud stuff, but a wonderful example of schadenfreude. It's fair to say that our papers didn't hold back in criticising Green either - as I pointed out yesterday - but it could well be thought, in certain tabloid newsrooms,...

London, June 15 – England goalkeeper Robert Green has split from his model girlfriend Elizabeth Minett.
Green, who apologised to the nation after his fumble spilled the ball into his own net to earn the Us a 1-1 draw on Saturday night, ended the 20-month relationship with the model shortly before the World Cup.
However, Green’s agent Andy Evans insists the split has had not affected the goalie’s focus in South Africa.
‘Their relationship was over many months ago. This really is not an issue.
