Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

Exclusive: Christiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah), John Lithgow (The Crown), David Morse (The Green Mile), Rolando Villazón (La Bohèmme) and more will star in an Untitled Cabrini Film from Alejandro Monteverde.
The film tells the story of Francesca Cabrini, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 19th Century, who began with nothing and created the largest multinational charitable empire the world had ever known, her accomplishments equaling those of Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. While Cabrini was faced in her time with the sexism and virulent anti-Italian bigotry of 19th century America, she overcame every obstacle through relentless perseverance and business skill, eventually building schools, orphanages and hospitals that transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide.
The Untitled Cabrini Film also stars Montserrat Espadalé, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Patch Darragh, Jeremy Bobb, Virginia Bocelli, Andrew Polk, and Giampiero Judica.
The Francesca Films pic’s producers include Academy Award and BAFTA Award winner Jonathan Sanger and Leo Severino. Rod Barr wrote the script; he collaborated on the story with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner Monteverde.
The film is currently in production in New York; the shoot will wrap up in Rome this fall. The project was the brainchild of financier Eustace Wolfington, whose passion for the story of Francesca Cabrini began over 60 years ago.
“The minute I learned of Cabrini’s life story, I realized this was a story that deserved to be brought to the big screen,” said Wolfington. “As a pioneer of human rights long before today, her story will be an inspiration to today’s pioneers of human rights which makes her story and unprecedented accomplishments as relevant today as ever.”
“As an immigrant myself, I am honored to be able to shine a light on the astonishing story of a true warrior of social justice who transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide,” said Monteverde. “Cabrini was a pioneer of women’s empowerment, making her story as relevant today as in the 1890’s. This picture – like Cabrini herself – is surprising, courageous, gritty… and deeply inspirational.”
“In a time when the achievements of women in every sphere of life have inspired a new generation, it is fascinating to contemplate the work of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian immigrant who came to New York in 1889. She would fit perfectly as a leader in today’s world,” added Sanger.
Christiana Dell’Anna’s film credits include Tensione superficiali, Mr. Happiness and more. She has appeared on the small screen in such series as Gomorrah (HBO Max) and Trust (FX). She’s represented in the U.S. by Cavalry Media, and by Volver Consulenze Artistiche in Italy.
A two-time Oscar nominee, John Lithgow recently earned his 13th Emmy nomination for his supporting turn in HBO’s reimagining of Perry Mason. He’ll next appear in Showtime’s Dexter revival, reprising his role as Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer), and in FX’s The Old Man. His recent film credits include Bombshell, Late Night and Pitch Perfect 3. Additional TV credits include The Crown, Trial & Error and 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorney Don Steele at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.
Two-time Emmy nominee David Morse will soon appear in Netflix drama The Chair, opposite Sandra Oh. His recent TV credits include The Good Lord Bird, Blindspot, The Morning Show, The Deuce and Escape at Dannemora. Recent film credits include Thank You for Your Service and Concussion. Morse is repped by UTA, Kipperman Management, Arcieri & Associates, and attorney Diane Golden at Katz Golden Lerner.
Rolando Villazón is an opera singer and director whose credits include Mozart in Prague: Rolando Villazón on Don Giovanni, La Bohèmme and La Traviata. He is repped by Columbia Artists Management.
Monteverde is represented by Sentient Entertainment and attorney Sean A. Marks of Marks Law Group.

My usual explanation in this space: I am especially interested in piano and choral music, plus symphonies, so that’s what I get the most promos of. Other stuff obviously gets through my filters, but the percentages of what comes in inevitably affect what comes out, i.e. this list. That said, in terms of number of centuries spanned, rather than genres or formats or whatever, I think I'm covering as much or more musical territory than most critics. By the way, look for a shorter list of my favorite classical reissues of 2012, to follow in a day or two.
1. Tokyo String Quartet, Jon Manasse, Jon Nakamatsu Brahms: Piano Quintet, Clarinet Quintet (Harmonia Mundi) There were recordings this year that were more important in terms of bringing new repertoire to light, or featuring young artists, or bringing classical into the 21st century, or being more controversially newsworthy. Examples of all of those follow.

Last week our critics picked their highlights of 2011. Did they get it right? Readers respond with their own highs (and lows)

One Man, Two Guvnors was the most fun I've had in a theatre for years – easily the best play of 2011, and James Corden best performer. The National theatre largely misfired for me: A Woman Killed with Kindness, Cherry Orchard, 13, The Kitchen, Frankenstein and Greenland were all largely disappointing.
The RSC's Homecoming was the best revival. Rupert Goold's Merchant of Venice was great fun, even if the inconsistency in Portia's characterisation (from ditzy blond Glee fan to brilliant prosecutor, hm) took the edge off it.
Tom Brooke was my favourite actor of the year – in The Kitchen, and I Am the Wind.

Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid are still two of my least-admired starchitects. However, credit where it's due. I had the pleasure of wandering Toronto's Ago...

Katherine Jenkins has admitted that she will probably not return for another series of ITV's Popstar to Operastar. The singer explained that she loved doing the show as she enjoys teaching classical music to new contestants, but that herself and fellow mentor Rolando Villazon are not fans of the show's huge time demands. Speaking to Digital Spy, Jenkins explained: "I think it's too soon to talk about another series, but I feel like we probably won't do another one. "Rolando and I talked about it and it takes up so much of our time. There are six weeks of shows, but we teach them for two months before, so it's a good three months of our time." (more)...

Former X Factor winner Joe McElderry has won Popstar to Operastar 2011.
He battled it out in the final against former Bucks Fizz singer Cheryl Baker, and after learning he’d won, Joe gallantly said, “I’ve had an absolute blast with Cheryl. I love her to bits.”
Cheryl said, “I didn’t expect to get this far, and Joe’s been fantastic. My money was on him from the start.”
The Sun’s TV Biz adds, “Bucks Fizz star Cheryl was praised by judges for belting out incredible top notes. But she couldn’t stop viewers plumping for Joe, 20.”
Last night, he sang a duet with mentor Rolando Villazon and closed the show with Nessun Dorma, Pavarotti’s 1990 World Cup hit.

Joe McElderry has been crowned the winner of Popstar to Operastar. The X Factor star topped the public vote ahead of rival finalist Cheryl Baker to emerge victorious from the second series of the ITV singing contest. The 20-year-old won viewer support after performing alongside Popstar to Operastar mentor Rolando Villazón and belting out a final solo piece earlier tonight. He later took to the stage with Baker, Villazón and show judge Katherine Jenkins just before phonelines closed. With the result revealed, McElderry enthusiastically hugged Baker and appeared to be more concerned with the Bucks Fizz star's reaction to her loss rather than his big win. 'Popstar to Operastar' faces the axe after its current series. The ITV1 Sunday night show - which sees music stars try their hand at opera singing - has seen ratings drop to just 2.9 million after opening with 6.3 million and now bosses are pondering the programme's future. Joe McElderry proved that he’s not just a cheesy pop singer on last week’s Popstar To Operastar.
The 20 year old singer, who shot to fame after winning the 2009 series of The X Factor, took to the stage on the ITV show and belted out the classical operatic track ‘Nessun Dorma.’
The judging panel were stunned by his authentic rendition – as were we – and expert Rolando Villazon said:
“Well I must say, I know I am listening to you as an opera star, not a pop star, so I need to criticise you as an opera singer. That was fantastic, the Italian was very good. That was extremely enjoyable, that was another chakka chakka performance.”
Simon Callow added: “Fantastic, absolutely thrilling. I saw you this afternoon, I know you were daunted by it but you were fantastic.”

Andy Bell became the latest contestant to be voted off 'Popstar to Operastar' last night (26.06.11). The Erasure singer - who landed in the bottom two alongside Toploader frontman Joe Washbourn - stumbled over his words in the sing-off to 'Largo Al Factotum' from 'The Barber of Seville', causing judges Vanessa Mae, Katherine Jenkins, Simon Callow and Rolando Villazon to unanimously decide to send him home. However, the 47-year-old musician admitted he had suffered a "complete blank" due to the pressure of being in the sing-off. Speaking to host Myleene Klass, he said: "It's not like doing a gig and I had a...

Melody Thornton has been voted off 'Popstar to Operastar'. I want people to be inspired and to do something they don't ordinarily do. I think I'm not in my home here and I could have used some more support.

Melody Thornton has become the third celebrity to leave Popstar to Operastar. The ex-Pussycat Doll faced off against Joseph Washbourn in a showdown for judges' votes after both stars finished bottom of the public vote for the second time in three weeks. After the pair repeated their performances, host Myleene Klass turned to panelist Rolando Villazón and asked for him to vote for his favourite competitor. "Both improved tonight," he stated, before clarifying that "the performer that put together more things and went a step further is Joseph". Next was Simon Callow, who also voted for the Toploader frontman for achieving "an even better engagement with the words [and] the whole meaning". Thornton, however did receive the backing of judge Vanessa-Mae for having "actually delivered" (more)...

Joe Washbourn and Andy Bell have reportedly refused to give up smoking, despite the advice of their Popstar To Operastar mentors, Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon.
The Toploader frontman and Erasure star are said to be sneaking out of rehearsals for the ITV show, for sneaky cigarette breaks, even though their singing instructors have banned the disgusting habit.
Joe told The Sun:
He said: “I get on well with Andy Bell. We go out having the odd cheeky cigarette behind the judges’ backs.
“The judges haven’t seen us yet. We’ve been hiding. We’re the only smokers on the show.”
However Jow thinks he may have to give up, if he wants to stand a chance of winning the series, which tries to turn pop singers into operatic crooners.
He added:

Joe Washbourn has confessed that he never suspected he would be competing on ‘Popstar to Operastar’ “in a million years”.
The Toploader singer confessed that while his new role was an unexpected one, he has so far “thoroughly enjoyed” learning how to sing classically because it is so different to the style of the ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ hitmakers.
He exclusively told Bang Showbiz: “It’s pretty random singing opera. I didn’t think I’d do it in a million years but I thoroughly enjoyed it in the rehearsals, so I thought, ‘Why not?’
“It’s nice to do something completely different and get out of your comfort zone.”
Joe will sing in the competition for the first time on Sunday (12.06.11), and he thinks the judging line-up of classical violinist Vanessa Mae, theatre director Simon Callow, Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and Mexican-born tenor Rolando Villazon are much harsher than last year’s panellists.

Midge Ure became the first celebrity to leave ITV’s Popstar To Operastar last night, when he and former Pussycat Dolls star Melody Thornton found themselves in the bottom two after receiving the lowest amount of public votes.
The decision between the two singers was then in the hands of the judging panel and while Rolando and Vanessa Mae voted to save Midge, Simon Callow voted to save Melody, leading to Katherine Jenkins casting the deciding vote, as this week’s head judge.
The Welsh singer voted to save Melody saying:
“The biggest improvement for me, and if we were to give them another song, they could come up with more, is Melody.”
Upon being voted out, Midge Ure said: “I’ll have to go back to my day job. No-one wants to go in the first round but I think I did a reasonable job and I go out with great aplomb.

Midge Ure has become the first celebrity to leave Popstar to Operastar. The Ultravox frontman and Live Aid mastermind exited the competition after being voted into a sing-off with Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton by viewers. After performing 'Questa O Quella' from Verdi's Rigoletto again for the competition's judges, Ure initially appeared to have kept his spot on the ITV show, as panelists Rolando Villazon and Vanessa-Mae gave him their backing. In their comments, Villazon branded Ure as the "performer that felt more comfortable", while Vanessa Mae stated that the 57-year-old "took a risk and really had fun and made me believe". However, their co-judge Simon Callow sided with Thornton after declaring that she "embraced the extra possibilities" of her performance of 'Habanera' from Carmen, leaving (more)...

Things weren’t looking great for Cheryl Baker when she started on Popstar To Operastar this evening.
The former Bucks Fizz singer admitted that she has never been a fan if classical singing or music in the past, she confessed:
“I have always thought that opera is snobby and for toffs. Why does it always have to sung in French, German and Italian?”
However, as we watched her Vt we realised that as she received more and more training, the 57 year old star actually became more comfortable with the genre and when she took to the stage on the ITV live show, we were pleasantly surprised by her voice.
Surprisingly, her vocals were very strong, much more steady than those of her fellow female contestant Melody Thornton and we can see why bosses saved Cheryl’s performance for last….it really was the highlight of the show.

Midge Ure admitted that he was nervous about taking to the Popstar To Operastar satge tonight, because he has never had any classical or porofessional musical training….in fact he can’t even read sheet music.
The Live Aid legend told cameras that he doesn’t want to put on a ‘cartoon opera voice,’ adding ‘I don’t intend to be Pavarotti…because I’m not!’
He had a hard time acting out his song in rehearsals but when he performed on the live ITV show, Midge seemed a little more self assured.
The 57 year old singer took on Questa O Quella from Rigoletto and probably had a less typically classical voice than either Melody Thornton or Joe McElderry who sang before him. He was definitely uncomfortable with the genre of music, however there was something very likeable about him on stage.

Melody Thornton previously admitted that she is hoping to win this year’s series of Popstar To Operastar based on her electric personality, rather than her vocal skills.
Tonight, as we watched her rehearsal video, we thought she might need to show a bit more spark because her performance didn’t seem to be going well at all.

Joe McElderry had a distinct advantage over his fellow competitors on tonight’s Popstar To Operastar.
The 19 year old singer from South Shields is no stranger to reality TV shows and knows what it’s liked to be judged and criticised by a panel of experts, because he won the 2009 series of The X Factor.
Tonight, as Joe tried his hand at opera for the first time, he was asked to take on the role of a ‘dreamy lovestruck peasant boy’ by his mentor, Rolando Villazón.
We expected to have a little giggle at Joe this evening and we know many people have been making jokes at his expense about how far he has fallen since being dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label last month.
However, when he started to sing, we got a glimpse of the star that inspired all those millions of people to vote for him two years ago.

Joe McElderry has claimed that appearing on Popstar To Operastar will be made easier by the fact that he has reality TV experience.

Joe of course won The X Factor in 2009, but ever since, his music career has failed to get off the ground, so he’s also hoping that Popstar to Operastar may put him back on track.
The show starts next Saturday, and Joe will compete alongside seven other popstars, all of whom are hoping to impress the public and judges Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon.
It’s expected that Katherine and Rolando will be joined by two more judges, whose names will be announced at some point this week.

Joe McElderry has claimed that coming from The X Factor has prepared him well for performing in front of judges Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon on Popstar to Operastar. McElderry, who won the 2009 series of the competition, will compete in the ITV series alongside famous faces including Erasure's Andy Bell, Midge Ure and Jocelyn Brown. "I'm alright with performing in front of Rolando and Katherine now. I'm used to being in front of high-profile people after The X Factor, so that makes it a bit easier," the 19-year-old told The Sun. Darius Campbell has won 'Popstar to Operastar'. The Scottish singer couldn't fail to hide his emotions when he was told by hosts Myleene Klass and Alan Titchmarsh that he had beaten Bernie Nolan in the public vote following their final three performances. Both finalists were required to sing three times, once on their own, secondly in a duet with their mentors -Rolando Villazon and Katherine Jenkins - and finally in a group performance with the two experts. Darius Campbell (formerly Danesh) has won the first ever series of Popstar To Operastar.
Singing against Bernie Nolan tonight, Darius performed a solo song, a duet with Rolando Villazon and a group piece with Bernie, Katherine Jenkins and Rolando.
We thought that Bernie was the more consistent singer throughout the series, however she faltered a little tonight and in the end Darius slipped ahead. For a full rundown of tonight’s show check out our liveblog here.
It’s nice to see him winning a show and maybe now that he finally has, he’ll give up on reality TV for good and forge a real career for himself! We love Darius and lust after him in a most embarrassing manner. Please someone give him a record deal or a movie role, he can’t do reality TV shows forever!

So tonight is the final Popstar to Operatsar show and singing for the winners title are Bernie Nolan and Darius Campbell.
For his first number Darius Campbell sang ‘Non Piu Andrai’. He performed this song a few weeks back but on his decision to sing it again tonight he told Myleene Klass:
‘I wanted to see if I could get through this performance with my flies up!’
Judges Comments:
Katherine: When you came into this comp you had the heart of a tenor. It settled much more in your bass baritone voice this time. Your usual standard, brilliant.
Lawrence: That was you back on form. That was what you do so well. Very cheeky, very sexy, very Darius performance.
Meatloaf: I loved the way you commanded your troops and the way you changed personality half way through.
