After a half-century, the landmark Gladstone’s restaurant in Pacific Palisades apparently is ending its run.
The oceanside restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway is expected to close in October, a source told Deadline. The State of California owns the land and leases it long-term to Los Angeles County, which has entered into contractual agreements with Pch Beach Associates LLC. That group was selected in 2018 after a request for proposal went out. That deal calls for the construction of a Frank Gehry-designed, Wolfgang Puck-operated restaurant on the current Gladstones site, the County rep said. That vote was not unanimous, however.
Update: As the Pacific Palisades location dies, another rises to take its place. A new Gladstone’s will take possession of the Edgewater Grill space in downtown San Diego’s Seaport Village early...

Two-term Mayor of Los Angeles Richard Riordan “passed peacefully this evening at his home in Brentwood, surrounded by his wife Elizabeth, family, friends and precious pet dogs,” according to a family statement released Wednesday night. He was 92.
Los Angeles landmarks, including City Hall, will be lit tonight in the green, yellow and red colors of the city flag in honor of Riordan.
The announcement Thursday by Mayor Karen Bass was just the latest in an outpouring of tributes to Riordan, a venture capitalist who was mayor from 1993-2001, and who faced the challenges of rebuilding the city, first from the Rodney King riots and then the Northridge earthquake.
In addition to City Hall, L.A. landmarks that will be illuminated in the city color’s Thursday night include the Richard J. Riordan Central Library, the Lax pylons, the L.A. Zoo and the 6th Street Bridge.

Richard Riordan, the two-term Los Angeles mayor who helped rebuild the city in the wake of the Rodney King riots in 1992 and the devastating Northridge earthquake two years later, has died. He was 92.
Riordan died Wednesday at his home in Brentwood, his daughter Patricia Riordan Torrey announced.
A venture capitalist and moderate Republican, Riordan served as mayor from 1993 — succeeding the retiring Tom Bradley and winning his first election ever — until 2001, when term limits ended his run. He defeated legislator Tom Hayden, former husband of Jane Fonda, to be re-elected.
Riordan also was mayor during the 1994-95 O.J. Simpson criminal murder trial that riveted L.A. and the world.
“Mayor Richard Riordan loved Los Angeles and devoted so much of himself to bettering our city,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. “He always had a place in his heart for the children of L.A. and worked to improve how...

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris jointly endorsed Rep. Karen Bass in her run for Los Angeles mayor today.
“We are endorsing Karen Bass for Los Angeles mayor because we are eager to continue to partner with her on innovative strategies to reduce homelessness and increase public safety and prosperity,” Biden and Harris said in a joint statement released by the Bass campaign. “Karen Bass has our friendship, and she has earned our respect through her leadership in Congress on crime prevention strategies, effective and fair policing, and the welfare of children and families.”
Bass, a Democrat, has been the U.S. representative for California’s 37th congressional district since 2011. The district, covers several areas south and west of downtown Los Angeles. She finished first in the June primary race for mayor and will square off in November against billionaire businessman Rick Caruso, who is also a registered Democrat.

While a decision was expected Tuesday from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on the possible reopening of indoor shopping malls and hair salons, none was forthcoming. The board did, however, approve a sweetheart deal for Gladstone’s restaurant at Pch and Sunset. More on that later.
Speaking of restaurants, Los Angeles County health officials revealed that inspections last weekend found that 20 percent of local restaurants continue to be in violation of county-mandated anti-coronavirus protocols. That rate is down, but not as much as one would think, from the results of similar inspections in early July which found 33 percent of restaurants violating physical distancing requirements and 44 percent of restaurants were failing to meet face mask/shield mandates for employees.
“As we look at the possibility of re-opening more businesses and, eventually, schools, there is a lot at stake,” said County Health Department Director Barbara Ferrer. “This does not help us get our numbers down.

Emphasizing that “Austin had demonstrated in only a year that the Times was once again capable of impactful journalism and meaningful community leadership,” Riordan, Villaraigosa and nine other signatories expressed their “profound disappointment” regarding the decision to dismiss the civic leader and former Wall Street investment banker. The letter went on to assert the role of the Times as not only “the voice of a community,...

Walt Disney's daughter Diane Disney Miller has died, aged 79.
The philanthropist passed away in her home in Napa, California after a series of complications following a fall in September.
"As the beloved daughter of Walt Disney and one of his inspirations for creating Disneyland, she holds a special place in the history of the Walt Disney Company and in the hearts of fans everywhere," Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.
"She will be remembered for her grace and generosity and tireless work to preserve her father's legacy."
Walt's only biological daughter has previously recounted how she and her adopted sister Sharon inspired him to create a theme park.
"He'd take me and my sister Sharon to the merry-go-round at Griffith Park and stand there all day waiting until we were ready to go," Miller told the San Francisco Chronicle in 1998.

SAG AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America West are dead set against California's Proposition 32, and they want you to know it. The "Stop Special Interest Money" or "Paycheck Protection" measure, which will be on the Nov. 6 ballot, would prohibit corporations and unions from using money that they've deducted from members' wages to advocate for or against political measures or candidates. Backers include Gabriella Holt, president of Citizens for California Reform; former L.A. mayor Richard Riordan and the California Republican Party. The rub, from the guilds' perspective, is that corporations rarely...

Directed by husband and wife team Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary (both former members of the New York City Ballet), the performance took place only feet away from the guest tables. At the Montage hotel, guests such as Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka -- a supporter of the ballet, who was at the 2011 gala -- Richard Riordan

Leo Wolinsky was brought in after several rounds of layoffs at the trade, and now he was pushed out after less than a year in the job. Before coming to Variety, Wolinsky had spent many years in senior level roles at the Los Angeles Times. But, as I wrote back on December 8th, why in the world would that newspaper's errand boy be named editor of Daily Variety (both the La and NY editions) because the guy knew nothing about the entertainment biz. I registered surprise at what a bad choice this is. He was long considered a joke at the La Times and infamous for secretly helping wrangle billionaire potential local backers like Eli Broad, Ron Burkle, Richard Riordan, and David Geffen when then bigwig editors were fighting with Tribune Co. (Finke/La Weekly: Baquet's Billionaire Boys Club). He briefly sat atop the La Times' entertainment and feature sections...

Sun Valley, Idaho -- Media and tech execs slowly trickled in throughout the day Tuesday as the town got ready for the 28th annual Allen & Co. gathering.
After a top-secret but low-key welcoming event Tuesday evening, the retreat's formal program will start early Wednesday with a panel on the future of entertainment in the digital age moderated by the New Yorker's media writer Ken Auletta. His panelists: Iac CEO Barry Diller, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, former News Corp. No. 2 Peter Chernin and Activision Blizzard boss Bobby Kotick.
Auletta told The Hollywood Reporter that he expects most content giants to look more aggressively at ways to make money from paid content in the digital world, even though News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch has been the most vocal about paywalls online.
Among other planned panels are a discussion on the fast-evolving science of the brain and a session on...

Where, o where, will the next Harry Potter come from? Could it be from New York, via Texas? Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, and Sean Bean have signed up for Percy Jackson, according to The Hollywood Reporter, an adaptation of The Lightning Thief, the first book in a series by former Texas schoolteacher Richard Riordan. After the failure of various projects to become "the next Harry Potter," the news prompted Entertainment Weekly to wonder, "Could this finally be the next big family fantasy franchise?"
Based on the premise, Percy Jackson stands a good chance of appealing to a wide market, but much will depend on the script, since Chris Columbus is still on board to direct. As Christopher Campbell wrote two years ago, Columbus "may have been the least inspired director involved with the Harry Potter franchise," so big questions remain. Can he deliver a good-enough movie that won't disappoint fans...

Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally ended the suspense around his political ambitions by announcing his plans to run for Governor of California. Schwarzenegger's announcement came as a surprise - advisers had said in recent days he was leaning against running in the October 7 recall election. It was also thought Schwarzenegger's pal and former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan was close to taking over his political team. The Austrian-born muscleman made his announcement during a taping of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno yesterday. He said, "The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing. The man that is failing the people more than anyone is Gray Davis. He is failing them terribly, and this is why he needs to be recalled and this is why I am going to run for governor." The actor will now count the likes of Hustler boss Larry Flynt and porn star Mary Carey among his competitors for the coveted position. If Schwarzenegger is triumphant, he will oust California's current governor Davis, who has seen his popularity plummet as the state grapples with a record $38 billion budget deficit. Davis is the first California governor to face a recall and will be only the second governor in America to be removed from office if the effort succeeds.

Muscle man Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to confirm whether or not he will be running for governor of California on American TV's Tonight show with Jay Leno on Wednesday. The Terminator 3: The Rise Of The Machines hulk has been undecided about whether to run in the October 7 ballot because of family considerations, according to an anonymous political adviser. The unnamed source says, "Arnold has not made a final decision but nothing has changed about his leaning against running." If Schwarzenegger decides not to run he is expected to support former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan, who shares many of the actor's views, in the election. However, whatever the outcome is it will be a major coup for network NBC, which has booked the star for Leno's show, which is broadcast directly after Schwarzenegger's anticipated statement next week. The network says, "While an abundance of rumors about whether or not Schwarzenegger will join the historic race for the governor's office have been circulating in the past week, next Wednesday viewers will finally get an answer from Schwarzenegger himself."...
