The gladiators are set to return to the arena … this time for Prime Video.
The Amazon-owned streaming service says that it has picked up a reboot of the classic competition series American Gladiators, with a nationwide search now underway for contestants to take on the professional gladiators in the custom-built arena.
The arena will include brand new challenges, as well as some classics from the original series like “Gauntlet,” “Hang Tough,” and “The Eliminator.”
The new series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and MGM Alternative.
News that a revival of the competition series was imminent became clear in April, when Range Sports signed Gladiators creator Johnny Ferraro with plans to develop the IP “across TV, film, attractions, merchandise and live events.”
The original series, which ran in syndication from 1989-96, saw contestants face off against elite “gladiators” in made-for-tv competitions. It was revived in 2008 as a primetime show for NBC,...

Hit the theme song. The classic athletic challenge show American Gladiators will be gearing up for some new games as Amazon will now be rebooting the series. American Gladiators initially ran between 1989 and 1996 in syndication and is widely considered one of the first reality competition series. The show had amateur athletes that competed against each other as well as the shows’ own gladiators across a range of challenges and obstacle courses. The “Jeopardy!” brand is expanding again.
Prime Video announced earlier this week that it has ordered “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” from Sony Pictures Television. This marks the first time a “Jeopardy!” series will be created exclusively for a major streaming service. ABC, which has been the primary home for the brand, airs “Celebrity Jeopardy!” and “Jeopardy! Masters” in primetime, while its affiliates make up the bulk of where viewers tune in for the main syndicated series.
Putting a twist on the classic quiz show’s “answer-and-question” format that combines the academic rigor of “Jeopardy!” with the excitement and unpredictability of pop culture, “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” will see contestants playing in teams of three, using their expertise in categories from Alternative Rock to The Avengers; Broadway to Mma; Gen Z to Zendaya as they compete in a tournament-style event for the grand prize and ultimate bragging rights.

Amazon is stacking up its unscripted orders.
The streaming service has ordered two new nonscripted series; it has ordered a U.S. version of British format Buy It Now hosted by Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jb Smoove and Nick Cannon is hosting holiday event Wish List Games.
Elsewhere, it has added names to Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, hosted by Travis Kelce.
This comes after the streamer ordered Pop Culture Jeopardy!, a spinoff of the iconic gameshow.
Amazon has largely struggled in the unscripted world and has had few breakouts so is evidently trying to bolster its slate.
Buy It Now comes from The Traitors producer Studio Lambert and is based on a Channel 4 daytime format that seasoned and budding entrepreneurs try to win a place in the Buy It Now store featured on both Amazon.com and within the Prime app.

This is the first “Jeopardy!” spin-off series to be created for a major streaming service.
“What is Prime Video’s upcoming game show ‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’?”
That is correct! And notice we said “major streaming service,” since “Sports Jeopardy!” ran on Crackle (back when that ad-supported on-demand platform was owned by Sony) from 2014 to 2016.
But hey, you get the points — and so does Prime Video, which was set to announce “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” on Tuesday during Amazon’s inaugural upfront presentation in New York. The series, which comes from Sony Pictures Television (and its game show division), reps the latest extension of the “Jeopardy!” franchise.
Set up like the “Jeopardy!” gameplay, the show’s “answer-and-question” format will focus on music, film, TV, stage, sports and more. Episodes will premiere on Prime Video across the globe.

After conquering broadcast syndication and establishing a solid foothold in network primetime TV, Jeopardy! is moving into the streaming realm.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered a version of the beloved game show called Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which will be the first iteration of the franchise to debut on a streaming service. Sony Pictures Television, which is behind all versions of Jeopardy!, is producing.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! will differ somewhat from the classic game in that three-person teams will compete against one another rather than individual players. The show will keep the classic answer-and-question format, however, and its categories will cover music, movies, sports and all elements of popular culture. Michael Davies will serve as executive producer, as he does for the syndicated show and ABC’s Celebrity Jeopardy! and Jeopardy! Masters.

Amazon is getting into the game show business — and bringing in Fox as a partner.
The tech giant’s Prime Video streaming platform has named Patton Oswalt as host of The 1% Club, an adaptation of a hit British quiz show. In a novel arrangement, Fox will air the show in a second window, eight days after episodes debut on Prime Video. Judge Judith Sheindlin is bringing her courtroom back to free, broadcast television.
On Thursday, Amazon MGM Studios said it reached a multi-year syndication deal that will bring its original series “Judy Justice” to more than 100 television stations across the country, including those owned or operated by Nexstar Media Group, Sunbeam Television, Weigel Broadcasting and Cox Media Group.
The move comes a little over two years after Sheindlin brought her courtroom-style arbitration show to Amazon’s free streaming service Freevee following the end of her multi-decade distribution deal with Paramount Global’s CBS Television. The long-reigning queen of syndication is returning to her roots. Judge Judy Sheindlin has inked a multiyear deal to put her streaming effort, Freevee original Judy Justice, on broadcast channels in more than 100 U.S. markets this fall.
This is, of course, a double-dipping scenario. Judy Justice will continue to premiere new episodes on Amazon’s Freevee and Prime Video. The streamer initially launched the show in November 2021 after Sheindlin, long the highest-paid host in TV, ended the 25-year run of the titular Judge Judy. “What a full circle moment,” Sheindlin said in a statement accompanying Wednesday’s news. “This continues to be quite an adventure!”
Judy Justice, which is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Sox Entertainment, is an update to the arbitration-based format. Sheindlin remains front and center but is joined by law clerk Sarah Rose (her granddaughter), court stenographer Whitney Kumar and bailiff Kevin Rasco. As always,...

It’s official — Judy Justice is headed to broadcast syndication for fall 2024 launch. Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment, which distributes the Amazon Freevee show, has closed multi-year deals with major broadcast groups including Nexstar, Sunbeam, Cox Media, Weigel, and Mission Broadcasting in well over 100 U.S broadcast markets, including all of the top 10. The company made the joint announcement with Amazon MGM Studios.
As Deadline noted in May, when rumors about a potential Judy Justice syndication play first surfaced, the move makes the first original court show on streaming also the first streaming show to sell into broadcast syndication.
This also marks a return to syndication for Sheindlin whose previous court show, CBS Media Ventures’ Judge Judy, continues to do well with repeats, averaging 5.6 million viewers season to date and leading all court shows as the No. 2 first-run daytime syndicated programs behind only Family Feud.

Judge Judy Sheindlin is heading back to linear TV — again. Amazon MGM Studios and Sox Entertainment have scored a multi-year broadcast syndication deal with station groups in more than 100 U.S. broadcast markets, including Nexstar, Sunbeam, Cox Media, Weigel and Mission Broadcasting, to premiere repeats of Amazon Freevee’s “Judy Justice” in syndication.
This marks a rarity in TV: A streaming show that has been sold in off-network syndication to local TV stations.
Technically, Sheindlin never left the linear air, as CBS Media Ventures continues to distribute repeats of that long-running hit series in syndication.
The run of “Judy Justice” episodes, which has now produced nearly 250 episodes of Freevee, is set to premiere in the Fall of 2024. According to Amazon, the clearance includes stations in all top 10 markets.
“What a full circle moment,” said Sheindlin in a statement. “This continues to be quite an adventure!”

After almost a year of radio silence, we have some good news to report about Leverage: Redemption.
The fan-favorite reboot has been renewed for a third season, which is set to air in 2024.
There is a significant change on the horizon for the series.
It will no longer be a Freevee original and has been shifted to Prime Video for the next season.
No reason for the change in streaming home has been given, but it's probably thanks to the devoted audience that has embraced the show since it premiered in July 2021.
Reboots are tricky to pull off, with many imploding once the initial curiosity factor wears off.
But fans have connected with this revamped series, thanks to its featuring many franchise veterans and new characters to tell a different story.

Leverage: Redemption will be back for a third season on a new platform. Amazon MGM Studios has renewed the popular heist-drama series, whose first two seasons streamed on Freevee, and is moving to Prime Video for Season 3. The third season will premiere on Prime Video next year in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Produced by Electric Entertainment, Leverage: Redemption follows a Robin Hood-esque team of criminals as they stage elaborate cons against corrupt and powerful individuals on behalf of clients who have been wronged. It stars Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, Aldis Hodge, Noah Wyle, and Aleyse Shannon.
“Fans have been devoted to Leverage: Redemption since the series premiered on Freevee,” says Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD; unscripted and targeted programming, Amazon MGM Studios. “Every season has showcased the fun dynamic between our cast combined with the triumphant, David vs. Goliath stories envisioned by our writers.

“Leverage: Redemption” has been renewed for Season 3, but will be changing platforms. The first two seasons aired on Amazon’s Freevee, but Season 3 will debut on sister streamer Prime Video in 2024 instead.
The move is significant, as “Leverage: Redemption,” a revival of the TNT series “Leverage,” was one of the major scripted titles available on Freevee. The show was ordered to series in 2020, when Freevee was still branded as IMDb TV. Freevee’s biggest scripted series at present is “Bosch: Legacy,” while a spinoff of that show was recently ordered at Prime Video as well.
The first two seasons of “Leverage: Redemption” are currently available to stream on Freevee, as is “Leverage” via Electric Entertainment’s Fast Channel and on-demand.

Ronald Gladden, the unwitting star of this year’s surprise breakout docu-comedy hit “Jury Duty,” has signed a two-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios to produce, develop and star in a variety of content – a turn of events as implausible as his growing fame.

When Bosch ended its run on Prime Video, we didn't anticipate it would lead to a full-fledged franchise.
The latest series to enter development focuses on Detective Renée Ballard, who is tasked with running the LAPD's new cold case division.
The division is "a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest caseload in the city," Prime Video states in the series' description.
"Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination.
"When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she'll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life."
"From books to screen, Michael Connelly creates authentic and suspenseful stories, led by distinctive characters who make audiences care and connect," said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals, unscripted, and targeted programming at Amazon MGM Studios.

Amazon Studios’ 2023 Emmy performance is probably best encapsulated by the Outstanding Comedy Series category. There is the veteran, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which years ago landed Prime Video’s first Best Series Emmy win. It is ending its five-season run in style with 14 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
There is the upstart, surprise Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Jury Duty which put Amazon’s up-and-coming AVOD platform Freevee on the awards map with four total noms, breaking new ground for ad-supported streamers.
And then there is Netflix’s Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Wednesday, produced by MGM, which has been fully integrated into Amazon Studios following the venerable Hollywood studios’ acquisition by Amazon.
The combined Amazon MGM Studios scored 68 Primetime Emmy nominations today, including nine for Daisy Jones & The Six, six (all in crafts categories) for the The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) and three for Swarm.
