★★☆☆☆ After garnering praise for his screenwriting efforts on both Dirty Pretty Things (2002) and Eastern Promises (2007), Steven Knight makes his directorial debut with Hummingbird (2013). Previously titled Redemption, this London-set thriller is not your typical Jason Statham vehicle. Yet, while "the Stath" proves he's up to the task, the uneven screenplay is where most of the film's problems stem from. Statham stars as Joey Jones, a homeless ex-Special Forces soldier living on the streets with his companion Isabel (Victoria Bewick). When they are attacked by local hoodlums, Joey escapes by breaking into an apartment.
Upon realising that its owner will be out of town for the summer, Jones begins to rebuild his life and, with the help of compassionate nun Cristina (Agata Buzek), he soon sets out to find the missing Isabel. There are many interesting narrative threads at work in Knight's Hummingbird; in addition to the rags to riches element, there...

“I’ll kill you… with this spoon,” Jason Statham growls while interrogating a thug in the grimy back-alleys of London in his new indie thriller Redemption. And we believe him. Statham has made a career out of playing charismatic and dangerous men, to the point where we already know he’s a tough customer and are a little tired of being reminded of that fact, film after film. Luckily, Redemption is something new for the actor, something much better and more interesting than angry threats and rote action. In part thanks to his committed performance, it’s atmospheric, relentlessly gritty and utterly haunting.
Statham plays Joey Jones, an ex-Special Forces officer out on the streets, driven to alcoholism by horrific experiences during the Afghan war. Trained to kill, he’s a liability to everyone around him, only able to dull his instincts with substances. At risk of losing himself in the fog of addiction,...

At least superficially, the canon of Jason Statham movies seems to be one marred by redundancy and ultimately blandness; showcasing a scowling, one man army raining down fiery vengeance on those that have wronged him. To an extent this generalization is true and at a baser level the action star’s films do stem from a familiar formula.
However, not only are there many gems to be found throughout his filmography but recently, he has chosen projects that are safe in appearance only (except Safe which was safe in name only). Redemption ultimately adds to that ilk even when it doesn’t always find the right balance between weighty themes, sombre aesthetics and the trademark Statham dry wit and physically demanding action.

It’s not hard to spot a “Jason Statham movie”. Suit and tie? Check. Wicked fighting skills? Double check. Awesome backstory? Triple check. Steven Knight’s directorial debut, “Redemption” (aka “Hummingbird”) has all those three things, though you might not realize this is a Jason Statham movie until the Stath finally beats up some punks, which doesn’t happen until nearly 30 minutes into the film. Even then, you will be hardpressed to call “Redemption” a “Jason Statham movie”, as it never really progresses the way you expect it to, much less climax the way you were probably predicting (or hoping for). Being unpredictable is “Redemption’s” biggest asset. The film is filled with pathos and glitzy, gritty London nighttime scenery, picking up with a traumatized, on-the-run former Special Forces guy (awesome backstory!) Joey Jones living on the streets with his buddy Isabel (Victoria Bewick), when they’re accosted by local toughs.

In recent years, Jason Statham, with his stocky frame, bald head and gravelly voice that makes him sound like he’s always gnawing on broken glass, has become a kind of one-man wrecking crew, and not just because of his appearance in the “Crank,” “Transporter” and “Expendables” franchises. A rough, sexually viable action star in the mold of Charles Bronson, Statham is an actor whose mere presence in a movie almost guarantees mass destruction and piles of bloodied, bruised, and beaten bodies. But as he proved in last year’s criminally underrated “Safe” and again in this week’s weirdly buried “Redemption,” it’s when he’s quiet that Statham is the most powerfully devastating, like an undetonated bomb in a church square. The promise of violence is its own kind of allure.Statham plays Joey Jones, who we learn from a jittery title sequence that plays on both the...

Chicago – Stephen Knight, the writer of brilliant scripts for “Eastern Promises” & “Dirty Pretty Things,” makes his directorial debut with “Redemption,” opening today in limited release, starring Jason Statham in a role that proves that he has more dramatic range than he’s usually asked to display.
With Statham’s best performance since “The Bank Job,” “Redemption” nearly works. It’s one of those truly frustrating films in that there are numerous scenes & moments that work but Knight can’t quite fashion them into a whole that’s not a disappointment. But he comes damn close.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Joey Jones (Statham) participated in something horrible in his time in the service. He’s shattered with Ptsd to the degree that he even has hallucinations (one involving hummingbirds, which contributed to the film’s superior, original title, “Hummingbird,” when it was released overseas) and has taken to life on the street. He drowns his trauma in booze,...

Jason Statham does not talk much in Redemption, but then, he’s at his best when he’s not talking. Statham is a human bullet, a harsh, rough, staccato force of nature at home in the bleak, shadowy alleys of the night than he is in the light of the day. So even though he doesn’t spend as much time as one might expect using his fists as dual battering rams in Redemption, his less-is-more performance makes up for a script built on too many conveniences.
Statham is Joey Jones—a name that is both clearly fake and is unbefitting someone as tough-minded as this bruiser—an ex-soldier now wandering the streets of London as one of its many homeless citizens. He’s haunted by his past military service in Afghanistan, coping as best he can with drink...

Jason Statham wears a dodgy hairpiece in Steven Knight's impressive London-based thriller...
To say that Hummingbird is off-piste Jason Statham is to do a disservice to some of the great man's previous choices. Take a look at The Bank Job, a cracking little movie that calls for drama over action, and Statham slots comfortably into the ensemble there. That said, Hummingbird is clearly an attempt, and a generally succesful one, by The Statham to stretch himself further.
Here, he plays damaged goods in the form of Joey Jones, an ex-special forces soldier on the run. So far so routine, perhaps. But once he's shed a particularly dodgy-looking hairpiece, it turns out that the role fits Statham particularly well. He's a man living in the criminal underworld of London, but who finds - with the help of a nun (really) - an avenue of...

Although known in the United Kingdom as "Hummingbird," the directorial debut of screenwriter Steven Knight ( Eastern Promises ) comes to the Us on VOD and in theaters as Redemption . The subject in dire need of being redeemed is a bloke named Joey Jones, a disgraced ex-Royal Marine who goes from homeless to hopeful thanks to the encouragement of Sister Cristina (Agata Buzek) and a life of criminal enterprise. Playing Joey is the screen's badass du jour Jason Statham, who shows off a more complex character than we're used to seeing from him in the "Transporter" or "Expendables" franchises. Don't worry, he takes down plenty of fools. We talked to Statham about removing some of the martial from his art, displaying vulnerability onscreen, sex with...

Humbly chronicling the stresses displaced Londoners living on the fringes of society have to overcome has been a skilled trait screenwriter Steven Knight has successfully done in his career. Casting famed action star Jason Statham in the lead role as troubled protagonist Joey Jones, the two emotionally and visually captured the struggles the lengths the homeless, particularly veterans, have to go to in order to survive on the brutal streets. ‘Redemption’ follows Joey (Statham), an ex-Special Forces soldier who’s still reeling from a traumatic tour of [ Read More ]

Duncan chats to the director of the new Jason Statham movie about, well, Jason Statham, among other things
Hummingbird (aka Redemption) sees Steven Knight make his feature film directorial debut after several decades in the film and television industry. He’s probably best known in the UK for writing the '90s TV comedy show The Detectives, which starred Jasper Carrott and Robert Powell (which he also directed a few episodes of). Hummingbird marks the third part of his dark side of London trilogy, with Dirty Pretty Things being the first and the David Cronenberg directed Eastern Promises, the second.
Hummingbird revolves around a homeless ex-veteran, Joey Jones (played by our man Statham) who’s given a second chance at a new life, helped in part by his unlikely alliance with a nun, Christina (Agata Buzek). It’s a surprising film in many ways,...

Despite the somewhat innocuous title, Steven Knight’s directorial debut Hummingbird – starring arguably Britain’s most renowned action hero in Jason Statham – is not about the grandiose bakery chain, and instead follows the rags to riches tale of a homeless man who comes into some good fortune. A shame, because this film may actually be better off if it was about cupcakes.
Statham plays Joey Jones, an ex-Special Forces soldier who finds himself homeless on the streets of London, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. However one evening, when on the run from a couple of local hooligans, Joey climbs into the nearest flat he can find – and when he breaks in, he realises that the wealthy tenant is away in New York for a number of months. Assuming the stranger’s identity – and finding his new credit card in the post – suddenly Joey has gone from having nothing to everything he ever wanted,...

"How skilled are you in the deadly use of the spoon?"
Until he finally encountered Digital Spy, it's highly unlikely Jason Statham was confronted with that opening gambit while promoting his latest movie Hummingbird.
A gritty and impressive drama by Eastern Promises writer Steven Knight, the movie showcases Statham's acting and spoon-wielding talents as traumatised former soldier Joey Jones, a homeless alcoholic who tries to turn his life around with the help of a Polish nun called Christina.
Statham also discusses the casting possibilities for the forthcoming Expendables 3 (but don't tell Sly!) and the stigma of being seen as an action movie star as opposed to an 'actor'.
Hummingbird opens in the UK on Friday, June 28.

Steven Knight's powerful and thought provoking British thriller excels on the strength of the dynamics between its emotionally damaged central characters, along with a clever decision to cast action star Jason Statham as the lead. Along with the capability to bash the brains out of any foe with something as seemingly mundane as a spoon, the guy can also emote. Tears shall flow.
Much like Knight's script for Eastern Promises, his work on Hummingbird delves into the murky London underworld and homes in on the homeless community and criminal fraternity that concurrently occupy the shadowy spaces amidst the pubs and coffee shops in the West End. The focus is on ex Special Forces soldier Joey Jones (Statham), who lives rough and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder...

Sneak Peek a new trailer and images from the action feature "Hummingbird" starring Jason Statham, written and directed by Steven Knight:
"...After witnessing his unit get killed in Afghanistan, 'Joey Jones' (Statham) has been living on the streets of London, trying to forget his past and stay of out trouble. On the run from a ruthless gang, he breaks into the apartment of a wealthy man in 'Convent Garden' and assumes his upper-class identity.
"Just as Joey is on his way to making amends with his friend and sponsor 'Sister Cristina', his pregnant girlfriend is found in the river. Now, Joey must use his connections in the mob to find the man responsible, stopping at nothing until justice is served. From acclaimed screenwriter Steven Knight comes an elevated thriller about a broken man with a battered past, fighting to do what’s right, even if that means breaking his own rules.

"They say you're a hard man. It's a hard city." After the absolute garbage that was Parker, this trailer for Hummingbird should get fans of Jason Statham excited. In what looks to be a gritty and grounded thriller, Statham seems to be in rare form as a damaged ex-special forces soldier named Joey Jones who is homeless after going on the run from a military court-martial. It feels very similar to Dead Man Down, but thankfully, it doesn't have the ludicrous action that Statham has taken on enough in The Transporter and Crank (though those films are fun). It could be Statham's best film since The Bank Job in 2008. Watch it! Here's the first trailer for Steven Knight's Hummingbird, originally from Yahoo UK: Eastern Promises writer Steven Knight makes his directorial debut with Hummingbird, from a script he wrote himself. The story follows a damaged ex-special forces soldier named...

You won’t be surprised to learn that in his new movie “Hummingbird”, Jason Statham plays a badass who uses his badass skills to kick bad guys in badass ways. Though in this one there’s apparently a bit more character and pathos that goes deeper than “he was wronged and now he’s going to kill you” logline you usually find in your average Statham movie. This is probably thanks to writer/director Steven Knight (“Eastern Promises”). But don’t take my word for it. Check out the first UK trailer for Statham’s “Hummingbird” and feel free to decide for yourself. Hummingbird looks set to be a new kind of Jason Statham vehicle, and we’ve got an exclusive first look at the quad poster. The film is the directorial feature debut of Steven Knight, who made his name as a screenwriter with Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises. The Stath gets to exhibit a softer side as Joey Jones (we didn’t just make that name up, promise), an ex-special forces soldier on the run from a court martial. Bearded, bedraggled and homeless, he finds solace in his friendship with a young nun after assuming another...

This writer felt slight surprise upon learning that Jason Reitman already started shooting on his fifth film, Labor Day — since it’s over a year away from release, I guess — but a press release has gone made it all official; no turning back, and so on. While the meat of that piece is all stuff most have heard by now, an official plot synopsis might be of interest to those who, for their own reasons, still haven’t taken note.
So, without further ado, here is the official synopsis for Jason Reitman‘s Labor Day (via Collider):
‘Labor Day’ centers on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler [Gattlin Griffith], who struggles to be the man of his house and care for his reclusive mother Adele [Kate Winslet] while confronting all the pangs of adolescence. On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers [Josh Brolin], a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help,...
