One key thing to remember, when watching a "Treehouse of Horror" episode of "The Simpsons," is that everything is a reference to something. Sometimes the thing the show's parodying is instantly recognizable, like season 5's take on "The Shining" or season 2's take on "The Raven." But if you find yourself watching a fun "Treehouse" segment and not recognizing where the story's from, that's a sign that you're missing out on a really fun piece of pop culture.
Such is the case with "The Twilight Zone," a '60s anthology show with 150+ episodes of fun premises to choose from. Some of the episodes "Treehouse" chooses to parody are already extremely famous but others are a little more obscure. Below is a ranking of our favorite "Twilight Zone" parodies throughout the "Treehouse" specials. If you're surprised to find that a given...

As the daughter of Chucky franchise special effects artist Tony Gardner, director Kyra Elise Gardner offers a unique perspective on the killer doll’s lasting impact in the Screambox Original documentary Living with Chucky.
Child’s Play creator Don Mancini and franchise alumni Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Billy Boyd, John Waters, Tony Gardner, David Kirschner, and more spill their guts along with such notable fans as Marlon Wayans, Abigail Breslin, Lin Shaye, and Dan Povenmire, among others.
Here are 9 things I learned from Living with Chucky.
1. Gremlins helped pave the way for Child’s Play.
A lifelong horror fan, Don Mancini wrote the first Child’s Play script — originally titled Batteries Not Included, then Blood Buddy — while attending UCLA. “I realized that no one had ever done the living doll thing as a full-fledged feature where you treat the doll as a character who can actually emote...

This article contains major spoilers for "M3GAN" and "Child's Play."
Ever since "The Twilight Zone" introduced the world to Talky Tina, the killer toy has become one of horror's most reliable antagonists. Out of the woodwork came slasher villains like Annabelle ("The Conjuring"), Billy ("Dead Silence"), and Blade ("Puppet Master"), but as of this moment, the world has been rightfully overtaken by "M3GAN" fever. Her incredible dance skills, coupled with her mischievous personality, have propelled the sassy murderer to a prominent spot among the killer doll hall of fame. M3GAN slays in every sense of the word.
It got me thinking of what movie would pair the best with "M3GAN" for a thematic double bill. /Film's William Bibbiani made a compelling argument for Wes Craven's "Deadly Friend," which would definitely make a fun companion piece. But for this double feature, I have a more recognizable title in mind. The...

It’s rare that a box office hit arrives in theaters on the first weekend of the new year, but Universal delivered it with the horror film “M3GAN,” a co-production between James Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions and Blumhouse that beat expectations with a 30 million opening.
Horror films are common this time of year as studios see early January as a prime spot to release a low-risk, low-budget title that can draw in younger audiences. But “M3GAN” has beaten all expectations by becoming the first January horror film since 2012 to earn an opening of 30 million or more, buoyed by a wave of strong reviews from critics who praised the film’s mix of horror, dark comedy and self-aware tone.
Insiders at Universal told TheWrap that as reviews came in earlier this week and the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score reached 94, advance ticket sales dramatically increased. Walk-up traffic on Friday and Saturday also beat industry estimates,...

After months of hype and memes, "M3GAN" has officially danced and slashed her way into theaters. Despite her debut being given a PG-13 rating, the film shows just how brutal of a killer this advanced A.I. doll can be. Seriously, you need to see what she does to a school bully in this film. It's pretty intense!
Of course, "M3GAN" is far from the only killer doll that has graced the silver screen over the years. She isn't even the first to be equipped with terrifyingly sentient artificial intelligence. While I watched her bombastic debut in the theater, I couldn't help but wonder how she would stack up against the plethora of other deadly dolls in horror. After careful consideration and some surprisingly difficult decision-making, I've created a series of hypothetical opponents our beloved M3GAN could be the best suited to face in a fight to the death.

This article contains major spoilers for "M3GAN."
On his commentary track for "Re-Animator," director Stuart Gordon refers to a Freudian-style interpretation of the "Frankenstein" myth as "a masturbation fantasy [...] it has to do with the idea of creating life without a woman." Taken in this way, Mary Shelley's tale of a man attempting to subvert nature demonstrates man's arrogance and envy of the biological abilities of cisgender women.
When a cis woman is the one driving the story of creating artificial life, however, there's less envy involved but much more perceived arrogance, with the character denying her "so-called natural purpose" and subverting it. In other words, a female Frankenstein can be seen as a character shirking her responsibility, creating life from her mind rather than her body.
It's that tension and those themes that "M3GAN," the new film from writer Akela Cooper and director Gerard Johnstone, ingeniously tackles. An impressively clever film,...

There are times when something that’s almost human is more terrifying than an actual monster. After all, uneasiness often stems from things that come eerily close to resembling humanity. Roboticist Masahiro Mori explained why people feel this way with his 1970 essay about the “uncanny valley” effect, and ever since, society has better understood why they feel uncomfortable around things such as lifelike dolls.
The living doll shows up infrequently in the horror genre, but when it does, people take notice. They’re ultimately torn between curiosity and repulsion as these puppets gain sentience and carry out their sinister missions. Chucky and others have all skittered across the big screen, but these stories, from five different anthology series, are a reminder of how toy terror also lives on television.
