Exclusive: Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop in Yuma County) has been tapped to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures, sources tell Deadline.
The project is described only as an original story that Galluppi developed and brought to Raimi and team. No word on a plot or who all will be producing, as it’s early days here.
In a statement to Deadline, Rami did tell us, “Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”
Evil Dead is, of course, Raimi’s horror franchise going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation...

A brand new Evil Dead film is on the way, which looks to be a fresh spin-off movie rather than a direct Evil Dead Rise follow-on.
The decade gap between 2013’s Evil Dead reboot and last year’s box office success Evil Dead Rise brought with it the promise that there wouldn’t be such a long gap between future installments in the franchise. And while we wait to see if Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will be signed up to direct a follow-up to that film, a spin-off movie is set to keep the franchise bubbling along.
The film does not yet have a name, but it does appear to have a director. Sebastien Vanicek, who directed last year’s success Infested, has reportedly now been signed up to write and helm a new Evil Dead movie.

Sébastien Vaniček, director of the French horror film “Infested (Vermines),” has signed with Creative Artists Agency and is now attached to direct a new spin-off in the “Evil Dead” horror series that will be produced by Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.
No word yet on whether Warner Bros. will distribute the spin-off as it did with last year’s “Evil Dead Rise,” a film from writer-director Lee Cronin that was initially greenlit as a Max streaming exclusive film but was pivoted to a theatrical release, where it grossed $147 million at the global box office.
Raimi, who created the “Evil Dead” series in 1981 and cofounded Ghost House with Robert Tapert in 2002, was an executive producer on “Evil Dead Rise” with the franchise’s original star, Bruce Campbell.
Vaniček made his feature film debut with “Infested,” a film about a depressed 30-year-old who obsesses with exotic animals to grapple with his loneliness.

Looking to replicate the success of last year's Evil Dead Rise (directed by Lee Cronin), franchise overseers Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert are hiring another filmmaker to head off in a different direction with a fresh spin-off. Up-and-coming director Sébastien Vaniček has been hired to make a new movie for Ghost House Pictures.
According to Deadline, the new film's story is being kept under wraps. And the spin-off nature means that this doesn't remove the possibility that Cronin will go on to make a Rise sequel (he has ideas for where it can lead), it simply represents Raimi and Tapert finding more talent to usher in other movies featuring those terrifying Deadites.
Vaniček, who scored some notice thanks to his work in the short film world, really stepped up with French horror Vermin ,(Aka Infested) which sees an apartment building overrun with deadly spiders. It first introduced as part of...

Here's something of a surprise: a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way! After successfully relaunching the franchise with last year's nasty, gory "Evil Dead Rise," Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert's Ghost House Pictures have tapped up-and-coming filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček to helm what Deadline is describing as an "Evil Dead" spin-off film. I'm guessing they're calling it a "spin-off" rather than a sequel to imply that this new entry in the series will not connect to the recent "Evil Dead Rise." It's also unlikely to be a direct sequel to the original "Evil Dead" trilogy or the 2013 reboot.
In other words, it's time for a brand new story with brand new characters set in the "Evil Dead" world. I like this approach — you don't need connecting stories for an "Evil Dead" film. All you need is the basic set-up and you're free to run wild with it! Besides,...

Exclusive: After signing rising filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček, CAA has helped him win a coveted assignment, as the co-writer and director of a new spin-off of the Evil Dead franchise for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures.
Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps. The Evil Dead is of course the horror comedy franchise created by Raimi, going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation of Starz TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead and a number of other projects over the years. The most recent, standalone film Evil Dead Rise from writer-director Lee Cronin, grossed more than $147M worldwide last year when it hit theaters via Warner Bros, after world premiering at SXSW.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Grudge (2004) was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
If there was one thing the early noughties had in an abundance, especially within the horror genre, it was remakes. We were graced with reboots, or re-imaginings, whatever you want to call them, of the likes of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake from 2007 and The Ring. However, despite the decent quality of those examples, well most of them, one thing that stands out in the film we’re focusing on today, The Grudge (watch it Here), is the fact that the original’s director, Takashi Shimizu, chose to also take on the remake. In 2002 the aforementioned The Ring,...

New Line Cinema & Renaissance Pictures’ Evil Dead Rise will make its streaming debut on Max on June 23.
About the film:
New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” written and directed by Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”) and produced by longtime franchise producer Robert Tapert (“Don’t Breathe”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).
Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sullivan and Sutherland, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Bruce Campbell has taken to Twitter this afternoon to thank Evil Dead fans for making Evil Dead Rise a smash hit in theaters, the film officially passing $100 million worldwide!
Evil Dead Rise is now officially the highest grossing film in the entire Evil Dead franchise, with Evil Dead 2013’s box office total ending at $97.5 million (unadjusted for inflation).
With a budget of just $19 million, Evil Dead Rise is needless to say a massive success, and it surely won’t be very long before the franchise finds its way back into theaters. We had to wait a full 10 years between Evil Dead and Evil Dead Rise. Expect a shorter wait this time around.
The best aspect of this success story? As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was at one point in time going straight-to-hbo Max. New Line/WB sure dodged a bullet with that one.

Writer/Director Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise presented several buzzworthy Evil Dead moments and set pieces, including the title card that arrives just as a Deadite rises from the lake. All of it, of course, by meticulous design as evidenced by the film’s stunning concept art.
Cronin took to Twitter today to share some of the concept art for the new entry in the Evil Dead franchise.
The filmmaker said, “Nothing on screen in #EvilDeadRise happened by accident. It took meticulous planning with an incredible group of talented people. And concept art was the entry point into our world. Here’s a little taste.”

Fresh voices can breathe new life into an old idea, which is why the majority of Evil Dead Rise‘s cast and crew outside of producers Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert Tapert are newcomers to the franchise. Production designer Nick Bassett and cinematographer Dave Garbett, however, notably worked together on Ash vs Evil Dead before being summoned back by the Necronomicon for the series’s latest installment.
Bassett’s connection to the Evil Dead extended family dates back to the mid-’90s, when Tapert was producing Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess in Auckland, New Zealand, where Bassett is based. “A big part of my film history, really, is with those guys, especially Rob,” he says, crediting Tapert with giving him his break.

With all its visual inventiveness, brilliant juxtaposition of grotesque, gory scenes with dark humor, and a well-defined mythology of its own, the cult-classic horror franchise “Evil Dead,” created by Sam Raimi, has gone on to become a subgenre in itself. One of the selling points of the series is the lore of the horror elements, revolving around the ominous “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis,” aka “Book of the Dead,” and the sadistic, vicious monsters known as Deadites, both of which end up wreaking havoc in the lives (and deaths too) of the protagonists involved in each of the installments. The latest release of the franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” continues the legacy of its horror by adhering to the lore and also by adding newer elements to the mythology, which we would like to discuss by explaining the lore in detail.

As you may recall, Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness introduced the idea that there are actually (at least) Three Necronomicons (aka the “Book of the Dead”) out there in the world, and Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin is playing with that tidbit in this year’s brand new movie.
Cronin recently told SFX Magazine, “There’s direct connectivity between what happens in this story and the others. They’re in the same world – this is not a parallel universe in any way. It’s happening after Fede’s movie, and after Sam’s, but in a world where those stories have taken place.”

The classic car has also appeared in pretty much every single thing Raimi has ever directed, most recently popping up for a cameo appearance in the Raimi-directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Will the car be making an appearance in this year’s Evil Dead Rise? Not exactly, director Lee Cronin reveals in the new issue of SFX Magazine. Then again, it sort of does…
“What I looked to do was take things that are within the Evil Dead universe, bring them into my own little kitchen, and cook them up in a slightly different way,” Cronin explains to SFX Magazine. “Although there’s no Oldsmobile Delta [in the movie], the chainsaw in the movie is exactly the same colour as the Oldsmobile Delta.”
“So there’s more overt things in play,...

The brand new movie Evil Dead Rise just premiered at SXSW last night, earing rave reviews from most horror fans in attendance. Bloody Disgusting’s Head Critic Meagan Navarro published her review in the wee hours of the morning, writing: “Evil Dead Rise is an absolute crowd pleaser that’s best enjoyed with a rowdy crowd of fellow fans.”
As part of the SXSW premiere, Warner Bros. worked with artist BossLogic to whip up a brand new official poster for Evil Dead Rise, and you can check that out down below. The art pays tribute to a particularly nasty cheese grater scene in the movie, glimpsed in the official trailer.
BossLogic tweeted this morning, “I was fortunate enough to get an early look at this film and it is awesome! This one really takes the franchise to the next level!”

There’s just no telling when Ash will run into a deadite. At a screening of the upcoming horror film Evil Dead Rise at the SXSW film festival, during a Q&a session with the cast and crew, an audience member became possessed, not by the Book of the Dead but by the Book of Anger, as he shouted out to the filmmakers on stage, “This movie f**king sucks!” Naturally, the audience felt how disrespectful this was and proceeded to boo the heckler as he made his way out.
According to Deadline, the heckler threw his popcorn in a fit of rage and stormed out after he had been approached by staff members following his little tantrum. The cast and crew laughed it off in disbelief, but the enraged audience member would flip them off before exiting and attempted to yell more obscenities as he was drowned out by the audience’s jeers.

One thing you should not expect to see in the upcoming Evil Dead Rise is franchise hero Ash Williams, as the new movie will instead focus on new characters. And for what it’s worth, Bruce Campbell has made it very clear in recent years that he has retired from playing the character in the world of live action. But Campbell does have a small cameo in the new movie…
Speaking with Empire this week, director Lee Cronin teases that Bruce Campbell is “hidden in the movie somewhere” – and if you can find him, you may just win some money.
“It felt like in order to move the franchise somewhere new and to unlock the potential of the universe to tell more stories, it needed to break free [of Ash],” Cronin tells Empire.
