According to new reports, director Chad Stahelski ("John Wick") will adapt Image Comics' monthly comic book series "Kill or Be Killed", created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, as an action thriller feature film:
"...in "Kill or Be Killed", 'Dylan' is a depressed college student who fails at an attempted suicide.
"He is soon visited by a 'demon' who explains it was he who spared Dylan's life.
The comic then examines the consequences of vigilante violence and its effects on Dylan’s loved ones..."

With the launch of Marvel Legacy and his upcoming Netflix series, this is the perfect time for The Punisher to become a big deal again in the world of comics. Not since Garth Ennis penned the title was Punisher a major comic that required you to take notice. Enter Matthew Rosenberg who has made a name for himself with some of his indie titles like 4 Kids Walk Into the Bank, and also made this year’s Kingpin series better than it had any business being. Marvel has taken note of that success and given him some major books to make his own. The question being, of course, can he live up to the potential everyone thinks he has?
So far there is a lot to be excited about. The book begins as many Punisher books do as Frank Castle...

David Fincher’s 2011’s psychological thriller “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” was a critically acclaimed film that went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards and win for Best Film Editing. Sony Pictures is now working on the sequel, “The Girl in the Spider Web,” and is eyeing Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez to direct the second installment, Variety reports.
Hot off his summer box office success with “Don’t Breathe,” which brought in $151.4 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, sources tell the site that Alvarez is Sony’s choice to direct the sequel, written by Steven Knight.

Immediately after (quite successfully) pivoting into original material with Don’t Breathe, director Fede Alvarez is going back to adapting other peoples’ work. This one isn’t a remake like Alvarez’ breakout film, 2013’s Evil Dead, though. No, this time Alvarez, presumably looking for a light, easy project, is venturing into a subgenre of action filmmaking that, historically, has come with little public scrutiny and low expectations from fans. That’s right, he’s making a comic-book movie.
He’s not being sucked up into the Marvel or DC cinematic machines, though. (Not yet, at least. Give it time.) Instead, Sony has hired him to direct an adaptation of crime-story specialists Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Incognito limited series, which was originally published by Marvel’s creator-owned Icon imprint back in 2008. Six years is an awfully long time for any artist to go silent, and such an absence is all the more palpable in the case of Lee Chang-dong, whose previous features (most prominently Secret Sunshine and Poetry) are considered by critics and, judging from the festival awards, his peers to be among the finest his prolific South Korea’s produced this century. Consider it a relief, then, that Chosun Media (via The Playlist) tell us Lee’s looking to begin shooting his next feature in November — “if things run smoothly,” he added as a condition.

If you skipped director Fede Alvarez's Don't Breathe earlier this year, I'd highly recommend checking it out as soon as it comes to home video. I didn't bother seeing the Evil Dead remake he directed a few years ago, but I was incredibly impressed the skills he showed in Don't Breathe, laying out a coherent sense of geography in a contained thriller that ramped its suspense up to 11. In my review, I mentioned how he's a director I'm definitely keen to keep an eye on now, and it appears that one of his next projects has been announced.

Fede Alvarez’s “Don’t Breathe,” about three friends who become trapped in a blind veteran’s house after planning to rob him, is one of the year’s most acclaimed horror films, with IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn describing it as a “dazzling example” of the home invasion thriller. After the success of “Don’t Breathe” and his 2013 “Evil Dead” reboot film, Alvarez has become of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s already attached to an upcoming comic book film: An adaptation of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ comic book limited series “Incognito” for Sony Pictures.

Incognito, the cult comic series from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, has wandered down a long and meandering road in its path to landing a big-screen adaptation. There finally appears to be light at the end of the tunnel, however, as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Daniel Casey and Fede Alvarez have both agreed terms to board Sony’s gestating feature.
Coming off horror hit Don’t Breathe, Alvarez is a major coup for the studio while Casey, having contributed to the screenplay for the rather excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane, is a fine candidate to tackle this new take on the infamous Zack Overkill. Birthed as a six-issue miniseries by Marvel’s creator-owned Icon Comics imprint, an adaptation of Incognito initially set up shop at Fox. An end product never materalized, though, and screen rights were eventually passed onto Sony, where Peter Chernin and his Chernin Entertainment remain attached to produce.

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

Even though police procedurals are all the rage on TV right now, I’ve always preferred detective shows and Film Noir movies. This week, let’s take a walk down some mean streets as I tell you about an outstanding Film Noir thriller. You’ll have to listen closely, as there’s no film at all.
Broadway Is My Beat is a crime drama from the Golden Age of Radio. Originally broadcast in the late 40’s and early 50’s, this show follows the homicide caseload of Lt. Danny Clover, a cop assigned to the “Broadway Precinct” of New York City.
Each week Lt. Clover must solve a murder. And it’s all done Ellery Queen/“fair play” style, so the listener can figure out whodunit as well. These stories are pretty clever. It’s always a race for the listener to keep up with the police lieutenant and discover what...

'Alice in Wonderland' 2010 with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. 'Alice in Wonderland' 2010: Plenty of visuals, no substance In the interest of full disclosure, I should start this commentary on Alice in Wonderland by saying that I have never been a fan of Tim Burton's works. I've enjoyed a couple of his movies, but the vast majority of them I've found uninspiring and, really, quite boring. Burton's eye for unusual worlds, particularly in terms of art direction and costume design, is not lost on me. But how can I possibly find Tim Burton a great director when he continues to offer the same tricks, over and over again? True, Burton's stories and characters change from movie to movie. What he offers, however, does not. What's there beyond cool visuals? What's there beyond the neo-gothic atmosphere he offers in Batman, or the brilliantly rendered chocolate factory playhouse in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?...

The trouble with Wonder Woman
Superstar comics writer Grant Morrison had some criticisms of Zack Snyder's take on Wonder Woman for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, telling Nerdist that Gal Gadot's portrayal is "not what [Wonder Woman creator] William Marston wanted" for the superhero.
"His original concept for Wonder Woman was an answer to comics that he thought were filled with images of blood-curdling masculinity, and you see the latest shots of Gal Gadot in the costume, and it's all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera," he added. "Marston's Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist."
Morrison will be offering his own take on the Amazon princess in Wonder Woman: Earth One, a story that he says won't feature any fighting at all (as well as an Invisible Plane shaped like a vagina,...

5. Southern Bastards (Image)
Southern Bastards #7-8
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Jason Latour
From masterminds Jason Aaron and Jason Latour comes Southern Bastards, a tale about a man, living with regret, battling the demons from his past, and facing them in his hometown. The writing is so good that Bastards has the feel of a great novel that’s rooted deep in American soil – in a place where the hero’s morality, regardless of the laws of country and state, is the last hope for a positive change. Set in the fictional Craw County, Alabama, the first story arc features a man on a mission to clean up his town with nothing but a stick locking horns with a crime boss who happens to be the local high-school football coach. The second story arc shifts perspectives and shows how the worst football player rose to power, and the sacrifices he made along the way.

Description: Angela and her fellow survivors are stranded on Lv-223, but their mission is not over yet. The answer to their quest could be hidden deep underground, but the strangest nightmare of all stands in their way.
Our Take: Don’t let the Prometheus title fool you, this ties into the Predator and Aliens titles that also comprised the Fire & Stone quadrilogy, which we covered heavily last year. This capstone title entwines the various threads while telling its own story in the capable hands of Fire & Stone mastermind Kelly Sue DeConnick.

5. The Empty Man (Boom!)
The Empty Man #1-6
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Vanessa R. Del Rey
Colorist: Michael Garland
Cullen Bunn is unique. If nothing else can be said about him, he is certainly unique. The Empty Man shows the full extent of Bunn’s ability. The series focuses on two detectives as they struggle to sort out the mystery surrounding a series of suspicious deaths and murders. The deaths are connected by the strange hallucinations experienced by the perpetrators, as well as their last words “The Empty Man made me do it”. The Empty Man is unpredictable because it follows so very few tropes. Nothing like this series has been seen before, and readers will be asking themselves the same question over and over: Who is the Empty Man? (Or “What the F*ck?”).
Bunn’s series is still in its infancy, so can be said without spoiling the twisting,...

2014 has been a landmark year for comic book movies. Not only did we get two of Marvel's best-ever films (Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier), but the major studios announced enough future superhero adaptations to take us all the way up to 2019.
It's been a pretty landmark year for comic books too. It feels as though more genuinely exciting new titles launched in 2014 than in the past ten years combined, with DC, Marvel and especially Image taking big risks and creating some seriously compelling comics in the process.
We've picked out our 14 favourite comics from this year in terms of big-screen potential:
14. Spread
The Comic: On paper, Spread doesn't sound like the most original book on the market. Like The Walking Dead, it's set in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors fight off gruesome monsters and each other. As with The Thing, those monsters are giant shape-shifting...

The Fade Out #3
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
With issue #3, The Fade Out moves away from beaten-down protagonists Charlie Parish, shifting its spotlight on new characters while more familiar faces slide into the background. Using unexpected flashbacks and unique third-person narration, Brubaker reveals the complicated personalities of two additional characters at the opposite end of the Hollywood spectrum. The focus here is on Mr. Thursby (head of Victory Street Pictures who has been doing everything in his power to silence the true nature of Valeria Sommers’ death), and Maya Silver (a young actress hoping to replace Valeria’s lead role in an upcoming film). Ed Brubaker shows us more of the dirty side of the film industry, capturing the various power struggles and moral dilemmas that come with seeking fame and fortune. The scope of this series gets wider making it another winning chapter of a truly great comic.

Image Comics is thrilled to announce that Criminal, the award-winning series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, is finally returning to print in beautifully designed new editions, beginning in January.
And to celebrate the return of the comic that solidified their reputations as Masters of Noir, Brubaker and Phillips, along with colorist Elizabeth Breitweiser, are creating a special 48-page one-shot sure to excite diehard fans and pull in new readers alike. For the true Criminal fanatic, a special Criminal: Savage Edition magazine-sized variant will also be available.
It’s 1976, and Teeg Lawless is doing 30 days in county jail with a price on his head; his only safe company from the savagery: a beat-up old comic magazine his dead cellmate left behind. It’s Criminal like you’ve never seen it before, with a comic within the comic and all those slick ‘70s thrills!

Few creative types understand their collaborators’ work more than their own. Creative duos especially. Collaboration can be the most rewarding aspect of any artist’s career; it can also be frightening, tedious, and perhaps even frustrating. But every once in a while – be it film, music, visual art – a pair of collaborators come along so entrenched in each other’s style, so privy to each other’s process, that they transform into a single creative entity. Joel and Ethan Coen, Eric B. and Rakim, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Since 1999 Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker have worked together on six different projects, all of which garnered significant critical acclaim and reader popularity. Each a master of their own craft, together they form one of the most distinct storytelling voices in all of comics. The Fade Out #2
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
Using the murder of a Hollywood starlet as a catalyst to expose the web of dark secrets that runs through the City of Angels, the award-winning team of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips have put together the most intriguing comic of 2014. Brubaker & Phillips’ new crime noir is just getting started but its already destined to be a cult classic. Brubaker’s name has been synonymous with the noir genre from the very start of his career, but The Fade Out is different from his books that came before it. Set in the Hollywoodland era of the 1940s, with painstaking attention to historical detail, The Fade Out relishes in classic Hollywood tropes – so much so – that every page looks like a storyboard from an Anthony Mann film. This is clearly, a labor of love from its creative team who...

John Darnielle has been putting out music for nearly two decades as the Mountain Goats, but this week he releases an excellent new novel, Wolf in White Van, which was just long-listed for the National Book Award. The book traces backwards through the life of Sean Phillips, who — following a near-fatal incident that has left him disfigured — runs a play-by-mail role-playing game. Darnielle, an unabashed fan of heavy metal and horror films, walked us through some of his main influences1. The Texas Chain Saw MassacreMy favorite movie, in part because I wrote a paper about it once accidentally. It was fresh in my head, and then my Greek tragedy final happened, and it was an open final where you could write about anything. What happens with characters in a Greek tragedy is they see all these signs that should tell them what not to do, but they can’t read...

Goliath 01, a prison ship, drifts listlessly through space. The ship’s commander, Colonel Mercer, has massacred everyone on board – inmates and crew alike, except one. John, the lone survivor, cowers in the bowels of the carrier, desperate to escape the ship. But the howling void of space makes the best prison of all. Follow John as he plays a vicious game of cat and mouse with Mercer. Only one of them can make it off the ship alive, so which one will it be?
There must be something about murder and space which just work so well together. Maybe it’s the fact that no one can hear you scream, or maybe I have seen the Alien films one too many times. Either way, it seems to be a formula which works really well when done properly,...

The Fade Out #1
Story by Ed Brubaker
Art by Sean Phillips
Colors by Elizabeth Breitweiser
Cover by Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
Modern noir masterminds Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips begin their five-year deal with Image with the release of the first issue of The Fade Out, a sprawling saga of corruption and redemption set against a gritty West Coast backdrop. As the premiere storytellers of crime/noir comics, Fade Out actually marks their first trip into Hollywoodland, the never-innocent city of illusions. The Fade Out sees them return to the familiar conventions of ‘classic’ crime noir, and weaves a tangled web through the underbelly of a 1940′s film industry. In addition to unsettling narrative themes of ambiguity and violent death, certain stylistic characteristics immediately spring out: stark, angular shadows; the isolated feel of modern cities; conflicted anti-heroes and boiled down dialogue. The multi-layered plot grabs you immediately — and Brubaker...

"Things go dark. I don't mind much. It's okay." John Hartigan, Sin City.
We're at the shadowy back-end of the summer blockbuster season and darkness is entering the frame. Here comes ultraviolence, sleaze, crime and death, all beautifully shot in macabre high-contrast monochrome. Just when you thought you'd got yourself clean and were all peppy after some upbeat family-friendly popcorn thrills, here's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For to darken up the doorways. (And it will light up a cigarette in those doorways and spit out some tough dialogue from between its bloodstained teeth while it's lingering there.)

By far the biggest news story this week was the return of Peter Park… nope, it was Doop getting his own series! Yup, the Slimer-esque X-Man who most recently appeared in Jason Aaron’s Wolverine and the X-Men series as a background gag, has gotten so popular that he’s now getting his own five issue limited series! Doop’s creators, Peter Milligan and Mike Allred will be writing and drawing the covers while David Lafuente will be the interior artist. All-New Doop #1 is out this April.
But yes, of course the big news was that Peter Parker was returning to the Marvel Universe this Spring with All-New Amazing Spider-Man #1! The classic flagship Marvel character was killed off before Marvel Now! first launched and his nemesis, Doc Ock, took over his body to become the Superior Spider-Man. The 2014 Image Expo helped partially prove my theory that there is no longer a Big Two in comics, but a Big Three. At the Expo, a plethora of new titles stretching across different genres were announced along with news about popular creators, like Grant Morrison, Ed Brubaker, Jock, and Kyle Higgins working on new projects. This article is a completely subjective primer about which Image books comic book fans should look out for in 2014.

Last week, from the 17th to the 24th of November, Thought Bubble – the Leeds comic art festival – took place at various venues across the city, culminating in the centre-piece two day convention on the 23rd and 24th at Clarence Dock. I got a chance to visit the convention on the last two days (two-day passes for the general public were a very reasonable £22, incidentally). It was the first comic book convention I have ever been to and therefore an entirely new experience for me, so I thought I’d give my views on it…

While Ben Affleck has been busy directing thrillers like Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo, his longtime friend and frequent collaborator Matt Damon is gearing up to direct A Foriegner (aka A Murder Foretold). But now the two are getting together as producers to adapt a DC Comic Book series for the big screen. Variety reports Damon and Affleck are picking up the long-gestating adaptation of Sleeper, the Vertigo comic written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips that launched in 2003. The project has been kicked around since 2008 with director Sam Raimi once involved and Tom Cruise attached to star. Read on! For those who don't know, the comic is actually a spin-off series from another comic called WildC.A.T.s. The story centers on an operative whose fusion with an alien artifact makes him impervious to pain and allows him to pass it on to others through skin contact.

Warner Bros. is moving forward with a big screen adaptation of DC Entertainment's property Sleeper, and they brought in Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to produce it.
The studio has also hired Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and David Wiener (The Killer) to write the feature film adaptation of the Vertigo comic. The 2003 comic comes from writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips. The series began publication in 2003, and it sounds like it will make for a solidly good movie.
The story is set in a "noir universe where a few people are spontaneously developing superpowers," and it follows "Holden Carver, a man who can absorb pain and pass it on to others, as he infiltrates a criminal organization on behalf of a law enforcement agency. His allegiances come into question, especially when he falls for the alluring killer, Miss Misery."

Despite all the flack the internet has been dishing out, Ben Affleck is doubling down with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Not only will he star as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman, he also will be producing an adaptation of the DC property Sleeper alongside longtime friend and collaborator Matt Damon, and Alice in Wonderland producer Jennifer Todd. Variety reports DC has hired The Shield's creator Shawn Ryan and TV writer David Wiener (The Killing, Last Resort) to translate the comic written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips into a compelling thriller. The 24-issue comic book series Sleeper centers on a sleeper agent named Holden Carver, who works for a CIA subset called Tao that's not exactly on the books or legal. Tao uses people with extraordinary powers to fulfill shady missions that are essentially geared toward world domination. Carver's special skill...

Last we heard, way back in 2008, DC/Wildstorm Comics' Sleeper was in the capable hands of Sam Raimi. Development seemed to nod off and nothing ever came of the project, but it's now been picked up again by no less a producing partnership than Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They're putting the reawakened Sleeper together at Warner Bros. in cahoots with third producer Jennifer Todd. The comic, by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, ran for a couple of years between 2003 and 2005, and involved several complex crossovers with the rest of the Wildstorm universe. It centers on Holden Carver, Aka The Conductor, who, thanks to contact with a weird alien artefact, develops the ability to absorb and store pain, and then pass it on again. He starts out as an undercover infiltrator of the criminal mob run by The Tactical Augemented Organism (Tao), but ends up switching sides and turning genuinely gangsta.
