Mubi is exclusively premiering online the new restorations of Hot Thrills and Warm Chills (1967) and The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds (1965) as part of the series ByNWR. I think it was Quentin Tarantino who said that the grindhouse enthusiast not only has to drink a lot of milk to get to the cream, they have to drink a lot of curdled milk. And I generally figured I would leave that to someone else because it didn't sound too appetizing. So I have to be grateful to Nicholas Winding Refn, a sturdier trashonaut than I, who has performed curatorial duties, rediscovering and restoring two prime examples of cultist cream, thick, clotted and soured and probably very bad for your figure. I shouldn't, I really shouldn't. But I'm going to.Hot Thrills and Warm Chills (1967) accompanies its nonsensical title with some really exciting Latin rhythms, credited to "Dario de Mexico" (who has...

Republic raids an early Rko talkie for a fantastic special effects sequence, and you won’t believe how it’s repurposed — in a story about a TV personality (in 1939!) taking on a corrupt political mob. New York crumbles and is then washed away — sort of. It’s yet another resurfacing of a title that not long ago we couldn’t see to save our cinema-curious souls.

Pacific Rim Uprising will run shorter than the original film, about 12 minutes shorter to be exact. Collider brings us the info that the sequel to the robot vs. kaiju franchise clocks in at about 2 hours in length. Director and co-writer Steven D. DeKnight shares his reasoning on why two hours is the sweet spot in the quote below:
“It’s resting right around two hours. I always shoot for two hours. If I was doing Lawrence of Arabia it would be a little longer, but otherwise I think the two-hour mark—this is just for me as somebody that loves movies and watches movies, two hours is always right around the sweet spot. If it’s much less than two hours then I start to get a little suspicious, if it’s much more longer sometimes a movie will support that but sometimes you just get a little worn out.

Director Tomas Alfredson helmed a pair of outstanding films, the gripping ground-breaking Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In, and Tailor, Tinker, Soldier, Spy, a moody, first-rate film adaptation of John LeCarre’s brainy bestselling spy novel. So one has to wonder what on earth happened with his latest film The Snowman, a crime thriller that boasts a cast including Michael Fassbender, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Toby Jones, Val Kilmer, and Chloe Sevigny. The Snowman is not merely bad, it is outright awful. Reportedly, even the director thinks the film is bad, expressing frustration the conditions under which it was made.
Adapted from Jo Nesbo’s novel of the same name, The Snowman focuses on Olso policeman Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) investigating the case of a missing woman who turns up links to a cold case. One thing...

The world will finally get to see Roger Deakins’ latest visual masterpiece when “Blade Runner 2049” opens in theaters this Friday, but the legendary cinematography isn’t taking any moment to rest after working on the Denis Villeneuve sequel for the last year. The 68-year-old Dp has confirmed to Variety that he’s gearing up to shoot “The Goldfinch” next, in which principal photography begins in January. Deakins’ prep on the film begins in a couple weeks.
“The Goldfinch” is an adaptation of the 2013 bestseller by Donna Tartt. Warner Brothers and Amazon Studios have teamed up for the film adaptation, which will be directed by “Brooklyn” helmer John Crawley. Ansel Elgort has been offered the lead role, according to multiple reports, but no official casting announcements have been made by the studio. The plot tells the story of Theodore Decker, a young man who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum.

The third time will not be the charm for Olivier Assayas and Kristen Stewart, at least not yet. The director is taking a break from working with the American actress in order to reunite with his former muse, Juliette Binoche. Variety confirms Assayas and Binoche are teaming up for the comedy “E-book,” which will co-star Guillaume Canet, Vincent Macaigne, Christa Theret, and Pascal Gregory.

The plot specifics for “E-book” are not being disclosed at this time, though Assayas has confirmed it will be a “full blown comedy” set in the Parisian publishing world.

"In The Third Man, there's no one getting kicked in the face."
Director David Leitch isn't saying the classic post-war thriller suffers from lacking a critical face-kicking element – but let's just say his new movie takes full advantage of that missed opportunity. Set in East and West Germany in the winter of 1989 – the moment in which the Berlin Wall finally came down – Atomic Blonde sounds on paper like a John le Carré novel, pitting weary spies against each in pursuit of a list that could leave them all exposed. Chanelle Aponte Pearson’s Dazzling Ode to Black Lesbian Love Is the Next Great Queer Project of 2017
If the success of “Moonlight” and “Atlanta” are any indication, 2017 is set to become the year of the visionary black auteur (about time already). Joining their ranks soon enough is Chanelle Aponte Pearson, director of ‘195 Lewis,” which recently won a Special Mention from Outfest for “highlighting the contemporary life of queer black woman with flair, vibrancy and substance.”
The short series explores the joys and pitfalls of open relationships in a vibrant community of black queer women living in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. Flowing with original music by members of the community and glowing with luscious colors and warm light, Pearson breathes life into the eclectic mix of characters with equal parts humor and lust. The script, by first-time screenwriters Rae Leone Allen and Yaani Supreme, radiates a confident originality that heralds a fresh new perspective.

Neill Blomkamp’s “Alien” sequel may not be happening now that Ridley Scott has taken back the reins on his franchise, but the “District 9” director is busy all the same. Neill Blomkamp has teamed up with the new short film company Oats Studios to release a series of experimental shorts, the first trailer for which looks as crazy and epic as anything you’d expect from the “District 9” and “Elysium” director. The teaser trailer for Oats Studios’ “Volume 1” depicts a world where humanity is enslaved by aliens who “came here to exterminate us,” a narrator explains. The aliens themselves look reptilian, but walk on two feet and shoot weapons. Other footage in the trailer appears to come from separate short films, one of which depicts U.S. army forces fighting in the jungle.

For a while, we wondered if Chris Pine would ever be able to escape the shadow of Captain Kirk. Before he starred in J.J. Abrams’ first “Star Trek” film, Pine was mostly known for tween fare like Lindsay Lohan vehicle “Just My Luck” or “The Princess Diaries 2.” Pine proved to be perfect casting in the role that was created by William Shatner, but subsequent starring vehicles didn’t often work: for every “Unstoppable,” there was a “This Means War,” or a “Rise Of The Guardians,” or a “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” or a “Horrible Bosses 2.”

Why one of Hollywood’s greatest living directors will keep tinkering with his franchises until the day he dies.
This past week, director Ridley Scott let slip two updates during interviews that had more than a few cinephiles clutching at their chests. First, Scott confessed that he had no plans to shut down the Alien franchise now that Alien: Covenant is on its way, noting that he could easily crank out one Alien film a year for the next six years. Later, Scott admitted that he was hard at work on a sequel to Gladiator, noting that he even had an idea on how to bring Russell Crowe’s Maximus back from the dead. For Ridley Scott fans around the world, this news was met with anything from confusion to horror. Why would one of Hollywood’s greatest living directors keep messing with his legacy?

The picture has an unnerving ambience in its structure which keeps fans of the Jurassic franchise guessing at its yet unveiled plot. Could this image also reveal what we can expect from the plot? In her Oscar-nominated performance as Jackie Kennedy in “Jackie,” Natalie Portman has received the bulk of the film’s praise (rightfully so) for her in-depth portrayal of a public figure so mysterious to the general public. Still, one of the most notable aspects of her character — and a major factor in her performance — is the all-important Jackie Kennedy accent.
In an aptly exhaustive examination of the actor’s approach, Alex Abad-Santos over at Vox breaks down the historical significance of Jackie’s accent with the help of several linguistic experts. Not quite transatlantic and not quite New York, Kennedy’s accent was a product of her wealthy upbringing along with a childhood split between Southampton and Long Island. The driving force of her accent, though, came from her years in school in Manhattan. At this time, well-to-do students, much like Kennedy herself, were taught a mixture of American English with...

Eight features and eight short films from the Netherlands or supported by the Dutch have been selected for the 67th Berlin International Film Festival that runs 9–19 Feb 2017.“The Wound”
“The Wound” is the only film ever to world premiere in Sundance, continue into Hivos Tiger Competition in Rotterdam and play Opening Night at the Berlinale Panorama. The movie is universal and potent exploraton of conflicting conceptions of what it means to be a man.
A lonely, young factory worker Xolani travels to a remote mountain camp in South Africa to tend teenage boys going through a traditional Xhola rite of passage. This year, Xolani is assigned to mentor Kwanda, a coddled Jo’burg boy who challenges the customs of the camp and is ostracized by other initiates. Kwanda, as observant as he is insolent, quickly notices the attraction between Xolani and his fellow caregiver, the volatile Vija. Heeding Kwanda’s exhortations,...

One of the most critically acclaimed films from last year, “Jackie,” reminded audiences of the politics of our country’s past, when in our current times contemporary politics seem inescapable. This connection between past and present is made tangible in Kevin B. Lee’s short documentary “Not Another Camelot,” which showcases every First Lady from Jackie Kennedy to our current lady of the White House, Melania Trump.

Director M. Night Shyamalan wants to jump on board the Stranger Things creative train and direct an episode of season two. I'd actually be ok with Shyamalan directing a Stranger Things episode, I really liked his last movie, The Visit, and his upcoming thriller Split looks great as well.
There's actually a good chance that Shyamalan could direct an episode as he has already worked with the Duffer Brothers. They were writers on his series Wayward Pines. That was their first real gig. So with Shyamalan giving them their big break, the least they could do is let him direct an episode.
In an interview with Digital Spy, the filmmaker said:
"My boys who do Stranger Things, they did Wayward Pines for me. They were round my house and I was like, 'Well, you can hire me back guys!'"
It'd be interesting to see if the Duffers ask him to direct an episode.

Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" made history at the 74th Annual Golden Globes winning all 7 nominations including Best Picture Musical/Comedy! The film won Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Actress (Emma Stone), Director, Screenplay, Score, and Song! Previously, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was the record-holder for winning 6/6 and both "Doctor Zhivago" and "A Star is Born" 5 for 5.
A big congrats to Chazelle and "La La Land!"
The biggest upset for me? Natalie Portman's "Jackie" performance was overshadowed by Isabelle Huppert in "Elle." I thought Portman, wigs and make-up included, embodied the role of our former First Lady!
In the TV category, "The Night Manager" was the big winner taking home three awards (mostly for performance for Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Laurie), followed by "The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" and "The Crown" each with two.

Director reveals he has turned down several projects because of the ‘non-reality of the situation of the superhero’ and says ‘cinema mainly is pretty bad’
Ridley Scott, the British director famous for Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator and The Martian, has said he would never direct a superhero movie. Speaking to Digital Spy, Scott, 79, said the genre is “not my kind of thing”.

Last week Kino Lorber launched a new Kickstarter aimed to fund their latest project “Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers,” a collection of important American films directed by women, including Alice Guy Blaché, Lois Weber, Nell Shipman, Dorothy Davenport, and many more, between 1910 and 1929.
The ambitious project will be presented in association with the Library of Congress and be the largest commercially-released video collection of films by female helmers. It will include HD restorations of both the most important films of the era, as well as lesser-known works, including short films, fragments and isolated chapters of incomplete serials.
“By showcasing the ambitious, inventive films from the golden age of women directors, we can get a sense of what was lost by the marginalization of women to ‘support roles’ within the film industry,” reads the Kickstarter page.

With dramas like “Lone Survivor” and “Deepwater Horizon,” Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg have committed themselves to bringing true stories of American heroes to the big screen. The latter is now playing in theaters nationwide, but that’s not the last we’ll see of the pair this year. Hitting select theaters this Christmas, “Patriots Day” finds the filmmaking team tackling the events of the Boston Marathon Bombing.
The film centers around Mark Wahlberg’s Sergeant Tommy Saunders, a composite character based on real members of the Boston Police Department, who leads the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bomber. His efforts are supported by Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon) and Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons).

Pablo Larrain’s “Jackie” roused what’s been a sleepy market at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Starring Natalie Portman as the former First Lady, the film covers a four-day period that begins just before the assassination of President John F. Joseph Losey doesn't normally make trendy, lighthearted genre films, and in this SuperSpy epic we find out why -- an impressive production and great music don't compensate for a lack of pace and dynamism, not to mention a narrow sense of humor. Yet it's a lounge classic, and a perverse favorite of spy movie fans. When John le Carré’s name is attached to a movie or television series, you already know what to expect. An author whose firsthand experience in the intelligence world informs his work, the novelist has developed a singular approach to spy stories. The films and series based on his work have attracted sizable budgets and A-list casts despite the labyrinthine governmental entanglements and devastating, feel-bad endings that come with le Carré’s territory. But where some of those other projects managed to preserve the author’s grounded approach, “Our Kind of Traitor” represents a Hollywood pivot to a film that, while entertaining at points, dilutes le Carré’s potency.
The aforementioned star power here comes from Ewan McGregor, playing unassuming poetry professor Perry (introduced kissing and caressing a woman’s naked back, lest you think he lacks mainstream movie spy bona fides), who becomes an unlikely pawn in a cross-continent informational tug-of-war.
