My Portuguese language skills are rusty, but the visuals and mood in new TV spots for Brazilian mystery Albatroz caught my eye, sending me back to the first trailer, which actually dropped about two weeks ago. Per Mubi, here's a synopsis: "The police find a corpse in the office of Alicia, a renowned writer. In search of clues, a researcher suspects that they might be in one of his novels. The tracks converge on the photographer Simão, Alicia's boyfriend during adolescence and world famous for recording a terrorist attack." Bráulio Mantovani, Fernando Garrido, and Stephanie Degreas star; Daniel Augusto directed. Check out the trailer below, as well as the TV spot I mentioned. Albatroz is heading for theatrical release in Brazil...

One of my ten favourite movies released in 2002 is City of God, the Brazilian crime drama directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund. The story was adapted by Bráulio Mantovani from the 1997 novel of the same name written by Paulo Lins, with a plot loosely based on real events. It depicts the shocking and disturbing, but always compelling look at life in the slums of Cidade de Deus, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s, with the closure of the film depicting the war between the drug dealer Li’l Zé and criminal Knockout Ned. City of God is a harsh, visceral experience and an honest look a the spiral of violence that draws kids into a life of crime. Recently, the New York based company Famp Art, chose City of God to kick off its new endeavour,...

City of God (original title: Cidade de Deus)
Co-directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund
Screenplay by Bráulio Mantovani, based on the 1997 novel by Paulo Lins
Starring Alexandres Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen, Seu Jorge and Alice Braga
Brazil, 2002
For modern film fans, 2002’s City of God is a key entry in Brazilian cinema. Based on Paulo Lins’s 1997 semi-autobiographical crime fiction novel, the film adaptation promotes themes of adulthood, survival and pessimism in one of Rio da Janiero’s favelas. City of God follows young aspiring photographer Rocket (Rodrigues) and his childhood and subsequent adolescence in the Cidade de Deus favela. Set between the end of 1960s’ and the beginning of the 1980s’, it documents the growth of organised crime in the Cidade de Deus.
The consistent theme of pessimism is reinforced by the life of crime that is immediately introduced to the film. Within the first ten minutes,...

"City of God" and "The Constant Gardener" filmmaker Fernando Meirelles has revealed on his Twitter that work has begun in earnest on his ambitious biopic of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis reports The Playlist.
Originally titled "Onassis", it now looks to have been renamed "Nemesis" to match the title of the Peter Evans book upon which the film is based.
The story deals with Onassis' contentious relationship with Bobby Kennedy who had investigated his business practices and barred him from trading inside the United States.
Said book goes on to speculate that the power struggle got so heated that Aristotle eventually financed the assassination of Bobby.
Meirelles was in London late last month to do some work on the production and even floated the idea of casting Michael Fassbender as Bobby Kennedy.
Bráulio Mantovani ("City of God") penned the script for the film which aims to begin production later this year.

With his multi-threaded relationship drama "360" now finished and headed to theaters at the tail end of the summer, Fernando Meirelles appears to be moving on this next effort, and it's no less grand in scope.
First announced last spring, "Onassis" (which now seems to be going by the title "Nemesis") is based on Peter Evans’ book "Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down the Kennedys" and focuses on magnate Aristotle Onassis' contentious relationship with Bobby Kennedy who had investigated his business practices and barred him from trading the within U.S. It gets better: Evans asserts that their power struggle, which also included a battle over access with Jackie O, got so heated that Aristotle eventually financed the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Damn.

I'm not quite sure why I still haven't seen Tropa de Elite (aka Elite Squad), the Brazilian crime flick directed by José Padilha and co-written by City of God screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani. I've heard many good things about it, and now that the sequel is about to get a North American release I think it may finally be time to get caught up. The original film followed the Bope, a special unit of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, as they try to take down various drug kingpins in preparation for the Pope visiting the city. The sequel, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, expands the scope of the battle to include politics as well. Thirteen years after the events of the first film, Captain Nascimiento (Wagner Moura) finds himself caught up in a political dispute after a prison riot, exposing corruption all the way up the chain of command. I...

He may have directed one of the best films of the last decade in City of God, yet news of another Fernando Meirelles project no longer interests me. After the good-but-not-nearly-as-important-as-it-thinks-it-is The Constant Gardener and Blindness, I lost enough interest in the filmmaker, to the point where I haven’t even bothered to look at anything from his latest, 360. (Jordan walking out of the Toronto screening last month feels like a vindication of this choice.)
So, please excuse yours truly if he doesn’t get all that excited from hearing about his next project, Onassis. Based on Peter Evans‘ Nemesis, it’s centered on the tough relationship between Aristotle Onassis — who, as you may know, married Jackie Kennedy post-jfk’s death — and JFK’s brother, Robert. Meirelles told ThePlaylist that they’ll “probably be shooting next autumn,” which means that casting hasn’t started just yet — but I expect that...

The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.

- Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener, City of God, 360 in the works) plans to direct a biopic of Aristotle Onassis, adapted for the screen by his City of God scripter Bráulio Mantovani, based on Peter Evans’s best-selling book Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down the Kennedys. The film, thankfully, will simply be titled Onassis, and will focus on the Greek shipping tycoon's relationship with Robert Kennedy, not his second marriage--to Jackie Kennedy--for which he is better known (pictured together). As Vulture describes it: "As attorney general, Bobby had investigated Onassis’s sketchy international business practices and banned him from trading with the U.S., and Evans wrote that their rivalry over control of and access to ...

Vulture is reporting that a biopic of Aristotle Onassis, the Greek shipping magnate who died in 1975, is currently looking to be made by director Fernando Meirelles and screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani, the pair who respectively directed and wrote the brilliant Brazilian film City of God. The news alone that the pair are going to be working together on a new project is excellent, and I can’t wait for this project to reach our screens.
The film is said to be based on the book by Peter Evans, Nemesis: The True Story. Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down The Kennedys. The book looks at the early relationship between Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of John F. Kennedy, who married Onassis in 1968. Evans looks at the effect this had on the Kennedy family and the feud it created between them and Onassis, in particular with Robert Kennedy,...

Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener) is rejoining with his City of God penner Bráulio Mantovani on a biopic of Aristotle Onassis called, enough, Onassis. Vulture reports that it’s set up at France’s Pathe, and that Meirelles is said to have described the upcoming feature as:
a sort of Godfather, with Onassis at the center.”
The film, which is in early stages at this point, is based on Nemesis: The truth Story of…, Peter Evans’s biography of Aristotle Onassis, Ari that uncovers the shocking height of the Kennedy-Onassis-Kennedy love triangle: Onassis was at the heart of the conspiracy to slay Bobby Kennedy!
Carefully tracing Onassis’ relations in the world of terrorism, Nemesis presents convincing evidence that Ari financed the elimination– including an upsetting confession that has gone unreported for almost thirty years.
The Greek shipping magnate is today best known for marrying Jacqueline Kennedy the widow of President John F. Kennedy.

"The Constant Gardener" and "City Of God" director Fernando Meirelles is re-teaming with 'God' scribe Bráulio Mantovani on "Onassis", a potentially controversial biopic of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and his relationship with the Kennedys reports Vulture.
Based on Peter Evans’ book “Nemesis”, the story will apparently focus on Aristotle’s contentious relationship with Bobby Kennedy, the latter had Onassis' business practices investigated and barred him from trading within the United States.
Evans asserts that the power struggle, which included a battle over access to Jackie O, got so heated that Aristotle eventually helped finance the assassination of Bobby. Meirelles sees it as "a sort of Godfather, with Onassis at the center".

Director Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener, Blindness) is reuniting with his 'City of God' screenwriter, Bráulio Mantovani for a biopic on Aristotle Onassis, a shipping magnate who achieved much success in his lifetime. Though a renown business man, Onassis is best known for having married the widow of President John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy. The film, simply titled 'Onassis,' is said to be based on the best-selling book from author Peter Evans, 'Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down the Kennedys.' After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.

Well, yesterday, we saw the full list of films in-competition; today, we get to see those titles that have been selected for Sundance 2011′s out-of-competition lineup.
And as I said with yesterday’s post, I’ll be going over the complete list, highlighting titles that need to be, taking into consideration this blog’s specific interests. The only title that immediately stands out is Brit John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses, which MsWOO positively reviewed, after seeing it at the London Film Festival in October. Read her review Here.
But look for future posts profiling any other titles I deem worthy. I’ve applied for press credentials to attend next year’s festival. I won’t know until the 23rd of this month, whether I’ve been granted press access or not. If I am, I will attend the festival; and if I’m not, well, I probably won’t.

The success of the 2002 Brazilian film City of God helped launch a number of careers, not the least of which is director Fernando Meirelles, who went on to helm The Constant Gardener and Blindness. It also spawned a TV series spin-off and a sequel called City of Men, and even now any association with that original film is bound to draw some attention. With that being said, here's another gritty crime drama that was penned by City of God screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani, and well, consider me interested! Last Stop 174 is based on the story of a bus hijacking that happened in Rio de Janeiro back in 2000. When Sandro do Nascimento boarded the bus, he didn't intend to take hostages, but the situation quickly escalated and turned into a media circus. The movie delves into his life growing up on the streets, and the events that brought him to that day.

San Sebastian, Spain -- Austrian director Hans Weingartner, in San Sebastian with his competition entry Reclaim Your Brain, is teaming with City of God screenwriter Braulio Mantovani for his next project, Nanny.
Nanny revolves around two women who leave their families in South America to become domestic servants in the U.S. As with Weingartner's previous two films -- Brain and The Edukators -- it is an undisguised attack on the abuses of modern capitalism.
"It looks at the perversion of the system, where rich countries have to import love and caring (for their children) from the Third World," Weingartner told The Hollywood Reporter. "How these women are forced to leave their own families to go and provide for the rich."
Weingartner made his name on the international film scene with his second feature, Edukators, which debuted in Cannes and went on to win several awards, including the German Film Critics prize for best film. Palmer West and Jonah Smith of production outfit Thousand Worlds have picked up the U.S.
