Perhaps the smallest scale franchise in the business is the “I Love You” anthology of films. Each installment in what’s called the “Cities of Love” franchise looks at romantic stories centered in one town. Paris, je t’aime started it off, with New York, I Love You and Rio, I Love You coming next in line. Now, this week brings Berlin, I Love You to screens. Unfortunately, while the first two efforts had lots of charm and offered more good segments than bad, the inverse is true here. Too much of the story is easy to dismiss and forgettable. For the first time, you don’t ever get a sense of why this is a place to love, or why someone might fall in love there. This movie is, as mentioned above, the latest installment of the Cities of Love / “I Love You” anthology series. Obviously, it’s centered in Berlin,...

If you truly love Berlin, and belong to the film industry, chances are you’re there right now attending the Berlinale, where roughly 400 movies unspool over 11 days. The Berlin Film Festival takes place annually in early February, one of the least pleasant times of year to experience a city where, in the half dozen instances I’ve been, someone always apologizes for the weather — with its rain, sleet, and iced-over streets — and helpfully suggests, “You really should come back in summer.”
And so, this year, I have no regrets sitting out the festival, choosing instead to visit the city vicariously via “Berlin, I Love You,” the latest in the “Cities of Love” series that gave us “Paris, je t’aime” and similar stopovers in New York and Rio. If you’ve seen any of those movies, you know the drill: The producers pick a glamorous international metropolis and invite a...

The juxtaposition of moments in time, such as one person experiencing immense joy and another hitting rock bottom, or someone dying while someone else is being born, has always been an intriguing concept in film. But there’s a certain finesse that goes into making each separate vignette engaging — and in some cases, even urgent — so that these slivers of tales resonate with the audience. Unfortunately, “Berlin, I Love You” lacks that essential finesse.
This fourth installment of the “Cities of Love” franchise centers on Berlin and, like the other segments, tells ten not-so-interwoven stories that illuminate various themes including love and loss. There’s the woman (Keira Knightley) who takes in an abandoned Arabic child, much to the chagrin of her disapproving mother (Helen Mirren). There’s also the Hollywood actor (Luke Wilson) grappling with his stagnant career and looking for something, or someone, who can exhilarate him once again.

Typical Berlin? “Nothing,” suggests one of the many characters in this new trailer for Berlin, I Love You, is typical in this city.
The fourth in the “Cities of Love” anthology series since the first – New York, I Love You in 2008, followed by Paris (2006) and Rio (2014) installments – Berlin, I Love You features 10 segments of love and romance in the German city.
Twelve directors contribute, including Fernando Eimbcke, Dennis Gansel, Massy Tadjedin, Peter Chelsom, Til Schweiger, Justin Franklin, Dani Levy and Dianna Agron. The film is produced by Claus Clausen and Edda Reiser.
The trailer gives glimpses of the various tales, including one in which Keira Knightley plays a woman trying to help an apparently homeless little boy (Liam Gross). Helen Mirren plays Knightley’s concerned mom. In another, Mickey Rourke puts his odds of a romantic hook-up at 50-50, and seems to beat the house.

You may still think of Eva Mendes as the woman from Hitch, or from the shampoo commercials, or from tabloid-ready relationships. But the actress who could easily spend a career coasting on her beauty has taken the last 4 years to make a series of risky and under seen films, from the gonzo Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans with Werner Herzog to the intimate Last Night with Massy Tadjedin to the surreal French experiment Holy Motors with Leos Carax. Now the latest acclaimed director she can add to her Rolodex is Derek Cianfrance, who broke out with Blue Valentine several years ago and who is back with the sprawling, emotional, and really good The Place Beyond the Pines. Mendes plays Romina, a woman who hooked up with Ryan Gosling's character Luke while he was in town with a traveling carnival. When Luke comes back in town Romina reveals...

Eva Mendes is mostly known for her work in big-budget studio flicks, and she isn't sure why. "I have actually done a lot more independents than big pictures, and nobody ever brings that part up," she tells us while doing press for her upcoming film the (relatively) small-budget, "The Place Beyond the Pines." She has a point. Last year, Mendes starred in the dreamy psychedelic flick "Holy Motors." Prior to that, it was a role in Massy Tajedin's "Last Night." In "Pines," she plays Romina, a woman coming to grips with a child she had with a vigilante / motorcycle stunt driver Luke (played by real-life boyfriend Ryan Gosling). Here, Mendes is completely dressed down, playing a character who's both physically and emotionally distraught. Needless to say, it's a far cry from her roles in "Hitch" and "Ghost Rider." Mendes spoke with Moviefone about her new film, the movie she wishes got more attention,...

Exclusive: Electric City partners Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell have optioned rights to the Alison Espach novel The Adults. They’ve set Massy Tadjedin to write the script and direct. Patricof and Howell most recently completed the Derek Cianfrance-directed The Place Beyond The Pines, which stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes and will be released by Focus Features. In her debut novel, Espach chronicles a modern young woman’s struggle to grow up in a world where an adult and a child can so dangerously be mistaken for one and the same. At the center of the suburban universe in which the novel is set is teenager Emily Vidal, who learns quickly of the complications that come with adulthood when she falls in love with an older man. Espach teaches creative writing in New York City. Howell found the book reminiscent of generation coming-of-age stories like The Graduate.

I love reporting on news like this! Chan-wook is finishing up his film now and although it was originally rumored to be at Cannes, it wasn't ready in time. Obviously this is one of the many reasons. I always love news that Clint Mansell will be scoring something, it means we've got some fantastic music to look forward to. The drama "Last Night," from director Massy Tadjedin, and starring Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet, rather came and went last year. No one had paid much attention when it premiered at Toronto in 2010, and no one really paid much attention when it hit theaters last May -- the film is a decent enough adultery drama, but pretty unremarkable in every way. Well, in every way but one; a score by one of the best-regarded composers of his generation, Clint Mansell. The former Pop Will Eat Itself member moved into the film world with Darren Aronofsky's debut "Pi," and has since worked with the director on each of his films, including composing the once-omnipresent theme to "Requiem For A Dream," while also contributing the excellent score for Duncan Jones' "Moon," among many others. "Last Night" marked Mansell's only cinematic score of 2011 (he dropped out of working on "The Iron.

Jessie Callahan Manager, Strategic Partnerships and Brand Licensing 1. Film: 'Last Night'; Cast: Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes, Keira Knightley, Guillaume Canet; Director: Massy Tadjedin; Rating: **** - a poignant tale of temptation.
One of the most complex monsters to handle in the world, is a man-woman relationship. That complexity is further intensified in our world today where communication has become easy, and old world morality and ideas of fidelity have no place in it.
'Last Night' is a film perfectly situated in our modern world. It is a deceptively and disarmingly simple story peppered with everyday incidents, many of which would have happened in many urban men and.

Last Night is a joint Miramax and Gaumont production centred around an element crucial to all relationships- monogamy. Writer/Director Massy Tadjedin toys with themes of jealousy, lust, temptation and infidelity in a way that absorbs you into the relationship of Joanna and Michael played by Keira Knightly and Sam Worthington.
Three years into married life, they appear to have reached the well reported difficult stage where despite being happy, the true meaning of lifelong commitment dawns and doubtful questions of marrying too early begin to surface. This enticing combination of curiosity and desire acts as the fuse waiting to be lit on the inevitable relationship bomb.
The spark is provided when Joanna becomes jealous after witnessing an obvious attraction between Michael and his colleague Laura, played by the beautiful Eva Mendes. Accusations fly and this is indubitably heightened by the fact that Laura will be accompanying him on the...

News that maverick Bavarian director Werner Herzog has been cast as the villain in the forthcoming Tom Cruise thriller One Shot should come as no surprise to anyone who recognised the source of Hugo Weaving's devilishly accented performance in Captain America. There is something about Herzog's deadpan voice that suggests awesome, infinite, unworldly powers just waiting to be unleashed. It's a quality that he uses brilliantly in the documentaries that have become his signature works, enabling him to speak merrily of the "ecstatic truth" of art and the attendant "chaos, disharmony and murder" of the cosmos with a blend of quasi-religious import and pathos. When the day of reckoning comes, I half expect to hear Herzog's voice calmly separating the damned from the redeemed, the strangely comedic sound of a divinity that shapes our ends…

They are moving along in their lives together until Joanna meets Laura (Eva Mendes, Hitch, Bad Lieutenant), the stunningly beautiful work colleague whom Michael never mentioned. Keira Knightley will take a ''long time'' to stop seeing Sam Worthington as ''arrogant''. The British actress appeared alongside the 35-year-old hunk in movie 'Last Night', and because of his decision to approach the role - about a husband and wife who have become complacent in their marriage - in a method style, he irritated both his co-star and the director Massy Tadjedin. He said: ''For the first week of rehearsals I got to know her, we had a barbecue and stuff, but I was struggling to get into the role. I thought if I treat...

Sam Worthington would like to make one thing very clear. His role as a taciturn, tormented Mossad agent in John Madden's The Debt is not part of some concerted campaign to leave the brawn behind and enter a more cerebral domain. The Debt – and its immediate predecessor on Worthington's C.V., Massy Tadjedin's Last Night – could be viewed as an attempt by the 35-year-old actor to come across as a more thoughtful male star than the hunky action man who rampaged through Terminator: Salvation, Clash of the Titans and, to a lesser extent, Avatar. But he's having none of it.

Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet are in over their heads in Last Night, Massy Tadjedin.s look at the unvarnished truth about love. The unraveling of four people takes place in a single night, resulting in intense, unforgiving drama in the form of a claustrophobic chamber piece. It.s alarming how easily a seemingly solid marriage is thrown off course by a third party, and then a fourth. The actors put in dynamic, brave performances, daring not to be liked when we put our faith in them and they betray us. Tadjedin builds the film to an excruciating climax. Monsters and Critics spoke with Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet and got some pretty surprising insights into...

We’re invited into the lives of Michael and Joanna, inside their exceptional apartment. As anyone in New York City knows, prime real estate is hard to come by (And man, their place is nice. Exquisite countertops, an open kitchen. Plus, they have tons of space, which is an oxymoron in NYC.) Michael is a commercial real estate agent, while Joanna is a author. These two are married. We know this because they’re arguing (heh).
Having recently been hitched, I’ve come to learn that marital spats happen for two reasons, and two reasons only: money and women. For this couple it’s the latter. You see, Michael has an attractive co-worker (Eva Mendes) which leads to speculation and insecurity. The two go in circles over who said what, and if anyone put something someplace; although they soon reconcile over veneered smiles and scrambled eggs (not a euphemism).

A film easily missed among this summer’s superhero blockbusters, Mark finds much to enjoy in Massy Tadjedin's drama, Last Night…
Last Night is the type of film that could easily be swept away during the summer, amongst box office juggernauts like X-Men: First Class, and sure enough, it's failed to make a splash in this week's UK box office top ten.
Its main similarity to First Class then, is that I very much saw it as a film of two halves. At least, in this case, the divide is integral. Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington play the lead characters, Joanna and Michael Reed, a married couple who deal with issues of fidelity and temptation when they spend one night apart.
We begin with Joanna taking Michael to task over his fondness for Laura, an attractive female colleague played by Eva Mendes. She suspects that he might pursue an affair with her,...

X-Men: First Class (12A)
(Matthew Vaughn, 2011, Us) James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, January Jones. 132 mins
Considering the odds were stacked against this – preceding as it does four X-Men movies (including Hugh Jackman's Wolverine), entering a superhero-stuffed summer schedule, juggling scores of characters, and telling a story fans know already – this does a remarkably good job. The cold war setting offers a new take on closeted mutanthood, and a parallel version of the Cuban missile crisis, not to mention Bond-like stylings, and McAvoy and Fassbender add dramatic ballast to some overbearing special effects.
Senna (12A)
(Asif Kapadia, 2010, UK) 106 mins
A Formula One doc that doesn't follow the formula, this assembles a compelling, even moving, biography of the superstar Brazilian driver using only archive material and audio interviews; no talking heads or modern-day footage. The racetrack excitement is contagious.

Temptation is the name of the game of The Jacket writer Massy Tadjedin’s quietly profound directorial debut, Last Night. The temptation of such an intriguingly sexy and good-looking cast of Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and French actor Guillaume Canet is the film’s obvious draw, and what drives a story full of acute observations and exquisite nuances. But this slow burner, which increases in intensity and passionate purpose, really impacts after viewing, posing the thought-provoking debate of whether long-term adoration is worse than the physical act of a one-night stand?
Professional couple, Joanna (Knightley) and husband Michael Reed (Worthington) have an affluent middle-class existence and apparent marital bliss, when doubt creeps in after Joanna spots her betrothed having an intimate balcony meeting with a very attractive and flirtatious work colleague, Laura (Mendes), at a party. This talky but worthwhile examination of monogamy in relationships – is it worth striving for? – is targeted at grownups
A small-scale, indulgent but worthwhile movie from writer-director Massy Tadjedin about infidelity, jealousy and the quarter-life crisis. Sam Worthington and Keira Knightley play Michael and Joanna, a couple who have been married around four years, and who went out for a while before that, in a period in which they broke up and got together again. They are at a time in their lives when they are happy enough, but tormented by the realisation that they can quite easily imagine being with other people, having different relationships and being just as happy, perhaps happier. Joanna is furious to see how one of Michael's colleague Laura (Eva Mendes) clearly finds him attractive: when he goes away on a business trip with her, Joanna bumps into Alex (Guillaume Canet) the old boyfriend who appears...

Stars: Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes, Guillaume Canet | Written and Directed by Massy Tadjedin
How you feel about Massy Tadjedin’s Last Night will greatly depend on your opinion on the subject of infidelity. It is a subject that has been done on celluloid many times before, and while there’s nothing new here, the simplicity of the story and the screenplay make it watchable.
Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington play a married couple, Joanna and Michael, who live in New York. While Michael is away on a business trip, they both are faced with temptation to cheat: Michael is away with his new colleague, Laura (Eva Mendes), and Joanna runs into an ex, Alex (Guillaume Canet), who she gave up to be with Michael.

Director: Massy Tadjedin
Writer/director Massy Tadjedin’s Last Night shares its title with Don McKellar’s 1998 Canadian comedy drama about the end of the world. But despite recent biblical (non-) events, the only rapture on offer here is of the adulterous kind – in the beguiling shape of Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet.
Joanna and Michael Reed (played by Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington) occupy one of those enviably spacious Manhattan lofts seen mainly in Hollywood movies. He’s in real estate; she’s working up to the Great American Novel by writing about fashion. Despite all that square footage, Joanna prefers to do her wardrobe changes in the middle of the kitchen. I think this is cinematic shorthand for telling us that the Reeds are very busy people.
At a lifeless office party, Michael clumsily introduces Joanna to his (not-so) new colleague Laura (Eva Mendes). Shortly afterwards,...

Massy Tadjedin's directorial debut is a conversation-heavy film about jealousy and infidelity that relies on looks and glances to get much of its story across; how successful you find Last Night may depend on how familiar those looks and glances feel to you. If you've cheated, or if you've attempted to read the unfaithful signals of your partner, there's some raw emotional power in between the almost endless streams of dialogue and a final scene that resonates with quiet devastation. It's those moments -- a flicker of the eyes, a too-knowing glance -- as well as a nuanced performance from Keira Knightley that salvages Tadjedin's Last Night, elevating it ever so slight above any number of Before Sunrise knock-offs with a infidelity twist, even as the excruciatingly wooden Sam Worthington threatens to drag it under.

Inspired by the recent release of Last Night, Massy Tadjedin's mature and cerebral film about marriage and temptation, we've been thinking a lot about other films that have infidelity as the driving plotline. We did a little bit of research on other lists that have been created on the same theme. What we found was a whole lot of repetition - Unfaithful and Fatal Attraction were on every single list! - and not so much indie recognition. Taking a cue from the glamorous young couple we saw recently in Last Night, we step off the beaten path to reflect on some great films in which people are tempted to sneak around. Surprisingly, there's not a ton of redemption to be found - but we can promise a list of films that are worth viewing despite some characters' questionable moral choices. Last Night stars two actors from two of the biggest movies of all time, Pirates of the Caribbean's Keira Knightley and Avatar's Sam Worthington. And yet, this stripped-down and very, very intimate drama is maybe exactly what you wouldn't expect form the two of them, baring their souls as married couple Michael and Joanna, separate for one evening and each running into temptation toward very different kinds of infidelity. Michael is on a business trip with a very comely co-worker (Eva Mendes), while Joanna bumps into a former flame (Guillaume Canet) who's in town for only one night; what decisions each of them make, to cheat or not to cheat, even while loving each other dearly, make up the minutely observed and constantly heartbreaking Last Night. Massy Tadjedin makes her directorial debut with this film, which you almost never got to see-- it was purchased by Miramax in its...

Keira Knightley, Last Night Mel Gibson-Jodie Foster's The Beaver Flops: Box Office Many will surely affirm that Mel Gibson's off-screen reputation as a bigoted boor seriously damaged the box-office take of his latest vehicle, the Jodie Foster-directed drama The Beaver. That certainly could be. But there might be other factors at work as well, as The Beaver was hardly the weekend's sole "small movie" that failed to lure North American moviegoers. Directed by two-time Best Director Oscar nominee Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields, The Mission), the psychological drama There Be Dragons, featuring Charlie Cox, West Bentley, and Dougray Scott, debuted at 259 locations with $689k, averaging a meager $2,660 per site as per Box Office Mojo. Overwhelmingly negative reviews were no help. There Be Dragons has a 14% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics.
